The Golden Proof

The trembling maid nervously clutched her uniform under Margot's icy stare. She swallowed hard before stammering, "Amy Young."

A heavy silence fell over the massive living room. The quiet hung thick in the air until heavy footsteps echoed down the grand staircase. Sam, the head housekeeper, descended slowly, gripping a small black bag in his trembling hands. He hesitated for a moment before reluctantly approaching Alistair and Evelyn.

"Sir, Ma’am," Sam reported, keeping his head bowed respectfully. "We found these hidden in the very bottom drawer of Miss Margot's coat rack."

He reached into the bag and pulled out the missing items. First, he revealed Evelyn's thick gold bangle, then a gem-studded necklace that caught the light, and finally a delicate charm bracelet.

Evelyn exploded with triumphant fury. She pointed a shaking finger at Margot, screaming at Alistair. "What do you have to say now? Look at the kind of low-class thief you brought into our home! Her being from the countryside is one thing, but stealing is unforgivable!"

"Margot would never do this," Alistair shot back, defending her character without hesitation.

Bianca stepped closer to the group, painting a look of fake concern across her face. "Let's handle this quietly," she suggested softly. "Could there have been some sort of mistake?"

To settle the matter once and for all, Bennett stepped forward. "Let's call Officer Jack Grayson from the police department. We can run a professional fingerprint analysis on the stolen items."

Evelyn agreed right away, issuing a harsh ultimatum. "Fine. But if her prints are on my jewelry, this marriage contract is void, and she will be thrown out tonight."

Margot looked at her calmly. "Sure."

Waiting for the police results required patience, so the family moved to the dining room for dinner. Alistair and Evelyn remained absent from the table while the brothers took their seats. Caspian shot Margot a smug, mocking grin from across the long table.

"You should savor this, Margot," Caspian sneered. "Enjoy what will surely be your very last meal in our home."

Margot fired back without missing a beat. "If I am still sitting at this table tomorrow, I will personally ask Mister Alistair to throw you out instead."

Caspian clamped his mouth shut instantly, realizing Alistair favored Margot enough to actually do it.

After dinner, Officer Grayson strode in, delivering the damning forensic results. "We found Margot's exact fingerprints over the gold bangle," the officer confirmed. "They also match the prints lifted from the door handle of the master bedroom."

Evelyn let out a sharp, victorious laugh. "The definitive proof is right here! Sam, pack up this little thief's belongings. Guards, grab her and throw her out into the street this instant!"

Margot slowly pushed her chair back and stood up, her expression untroubled. "I did not steal the jewelry."

She glanced around the room, her voice steady. "I noticed a thin, sticky film left on my own bedroom door handle yesterday. Today, it mysteriously vanished. The true culprit deliberately lifted my fingerprints from my door and pasted them onto the stolen items."

Evelyn scoffed loudly, mocking her explanation. "You expect us to believe that? The irrefutable physical evidence is right here. How do you explain away the facts?"

Ignoring the taunts, Margot asked, "I have evidence to prove my innocence. Missus Evelyn, may I examine the gold bangle?"

Before anyone could step forward to stop her, Margot picked up the heavy gold band and slowly slipped it onto her own wrist. The family watched her actions in utter confusion.

Within seconds, Margot's fair, pale skin began to react. It turned a fierce red and swelled up around the metal band. Enduring the intense physical pain and burning itchiness with a calm, chilling smile, she looked up.

"I am severely allergic to gold," Margot explained to the shocked onlookers. "My symptoms grow progressively worse depending on the purity of the metal."

Alistair stared in sheer horror at her blistering skin. "Silly girl! Why would you touch it if you knew? Take the bangle off immediately!"

By the time Margot slipped the heavy bracelet off, the damage was stark. Her wrist was peeling terribly. The two fingers she used to hold the bracelet were now covered in angry, red rashes.

Margot smirked at Evelyn, who stood speechless. "These severe symptoms will last for at least three days. This physically proves I could not have handled your gold jewelry yesterday."

Refusing to back down, Evelyn desperately grasped for an argument. "You could have simply worn gloves to commit the theft!"

Margot tilted her head, asking with sharp logic, "If I had been wearing gloves, why would my clear fingerprints be on the jewelry?"

Evelyn opened her mouth, but no sound came out, leaving her speechless and humiliated.
