The Trapped Welcome

The heavy oak doors of the Ashcroft villa swung open. Margot and Bennett stepped out of the crisp evening air and walked straight into an energetic, crowded living room. The Ashcroft family, anchored by a smug-looking Evelyn, gathered around the velvet sofas. At the center of their attention sat a wealthy young woman draped in a sharp, tailored designer suit.

Evelyn’s face lit up the second they crossed the threshold. She waved her hand eagerly. "Ben, come over here! Bianca just flew in from her studies abroad. She came straight from the airport to see us."

Bianca Vance stood up with practiced grace, smoothing down her immaculate jacket. She offered Bennett a dazzling smile, which faltered into a brief flash of intense disappointment when he offered nothing more than a cold, nonchalant nod in response. Recovering her poise, Bianca pivoted her attention to Margot. Her wide, sweet smile returned, but her eyes hardened the moment they landed on Margot's face. Even without a single drop of makeup, Margot’s complexion was flawless. That raw beauty sparked an immediate, burning jealousy behind Bianca's polished facade.

"You must be Margot," Bianca chirped, stepping closer to extend a manicured hand. "I'm Bianca Vance. The boys and I are lifelong childhood friends. I just know you and I are going to be great friends!"

Margot saw right through the fake, calculating demeanor. She ignored the outstretched hand and offered a dry, half-hearted reply. "Sure."

Alistair strode through the front doors moments later. Recognizing the longtime family friend, he greeted Bianca warmly, launching into a lively conversation about her time overseas. Taking advantage of the distraction, Margot quietly stepped back to the sidelines, leaning against a decorative pillar to watch the room.

The cheerful, welcoming atmosphere shattered a few minutes later. Evelyn clapped her hands together. "Oh, Bianca, I almost forgot! I bought a welcoming gift for you. Let me go fetch it."

She hurried up the grand staircase. The chatter below hummed along until heavy, rushed footsteps echoed from the landing. Evelyn marched back down, her face pale with fury.

"Where is the valuable jewelry set I bought last week?" she demanded loudly, her voice slicing through the room. "The one I placed in my dresser drawer!"

Alistair frowned in confusion. "How would I know?"

Evelyn whirled on her five sons. "Did any of you touch my things?"

A chorus of immediate denials echoed from the brothers. They all shook their heads, looking bewildered by the sudden outburst.

Bianca bit her lower lip, adopting a cautious tone. "Missus Evelyn... do you think a thief might be hiding inside the house?"

Evelyn’s anger flared instantly. "In my own home? The culprit must confess right now, or I swear I will hand them over for severe jail time!" She turned sharply to the head housekeeper. "Sam! Take the guards and conduct a thorough search of the estate immediately."

Margot remained perfectly calm. She leaned back against her chair, pulled out her phone, and started scrolling. She watched the unfolding drama with quiet amusement, detached from the panic sweeping through the hall.

An agonizing hour dragged by. The tension in the living room thickened until Sam finally returned, his hands empty.

"Ma'am," Sam reported, keeping his head bowed respectfully. "We have searched every single corner of the villa. The only places left are the staff quarters and Miss Margot's private room."

Taking that as a cue, a young household maid stepped out from the line of staff. She wrung her hands nervously. "Madam?"

"What is it, Amy?" Evelyn snapped.

Amy Young swallowed hard. "I... I saw Miss Margot walking past us yesterday when we were discussing the broken security cameras on the second floor. And later that afternoon, I also witnessed her secretly sneaking out of your master bedroom."

Evelyn’s face flushed dark red with rage. She whipped around to scream at Alistair. "I knew it! I wondered why she refused your bank card the other day. She was just waiting to secretly steal my expensive jewelry!" She jabbed a finger toward the stairs. "Sam, take your men and search her room!"

"Nonsense!" Alistair shouted, stepping squarely in front of Margot to defend her. "Margot is not that kind of person. You have no proof!"

Evelyn scoffed, her gaze dripping with disgust. "She’s a poor girl from the countryside, Alistair! She was left alone in this house all day yesterday. She is the most obvious suspect here, and I will not let her play us for fools."

Margot remained undisturbed. She tucked her phone away and met Alistair’s protective stance with a steady expression.

"It's fine, Mister Alistair," Margot said calmly. "Let them search my room."

She already saw the chessboard. This situation was a deliberate, calculated setup designed to banish her from the Ashcroft estate. Rather than fight the accusation, she fully intended to let the game play out so she could find the real mastermind pulling the strings.

As Sam signaled the search party to head upstairs, Margot turned. She locked her freezing cold gaze onto the maid who had just spun the lie.

"You," Margot asked quietly, her voice carrying a chilling edge. "What's your name?"
