Escape in the Dark
"Please go on," Roman urged, gripping his phone as a cold dread settled over him.
"Stella collapsed while going to the bathroom at midnight," Rebecca’s voice shook through the receiver, heavy with distress. "We found her on the cold tiles. She has been rushed to the hospital, and the doctors say her condition is critical. You need to come right now if you can."
"I understand." Roman disconnected the line. He stared out his windshield for a brief moment, steeling his nerves, before dialing Nora’s number.
Inside her locked ward, Nora snatched up her ringing device.
"Nora, it is me," Roman said, his tone grim. "The director just called. Stella collapsed in the bathroom. She is at the hospital now. I am coming to pick you up. We need to go right now."
"Okay, hurry!" Nora gasped. A sharp, phantom pain flared in her chest. The sudden agony she experienced earlier finally made sense. It was a maternal tether, a terrifying premonition warning her that her daughter was failing.
"Listen to me," Roman instructed, laying out the desperate extraction plan. "I have arranged to sever the main power grid to the Crawford private hospital. The blackout will plunge the entire building into darkness. You use that chaotic window to slip past your guards unnoticed. Can you do it?"
Nora clutched the fabric of her gown, her knuckles turning white. "What about Leo? Roman, will a sudden power outage hurt him?"
"No," Roman reassured her. "The ICU runs on separate, immediate backup generators. His life support systems will be safe. The regular wards are the only ones going dark."
Relief washed over Nora. She could never forgive herself if saving her daughter cost Leo his life. "I will be ready."
She shoved her belongings into her purse and stood by the door, keeping her eyes fixed on the overhead light. She counted the seconds, her breath hitching with every beat of her heart.
Exactly five minutes later, a heavy mechanical clunk echoed through the walls.
The overhead lights snapped off. The hum of the air conditioning died. The massive hospital plunged into pitch-black darkness.
Shouts erupted in the corridor. Nurses scrambled, and flashlights began to sweep the shadows.
Nora cracked her door open.
Right next door, Daphne stumbled out of her suite. "Leo! Where is my baby?" she screamed. Her shrill voice pierced the chaotic hallway.
The bodyguard assigned to watch Nora’s door immediately stepped toward the frantic woman. "Ms. Mercer, watch your step in the dark."
Daphne lunged forward, grabbing the bodyguard’s arm and clinging tight. "Take me to the ICU! I have to see Leo! He is in danger!"
"I will take you right now," the bodyguard assured, struggling to support Daphne's weight.
"My poor boy!" Daphne wailed, making a tremendous, distracting scene. Yet, over the bodyguard’s shoulder, Daphne’s spiteful gaze cut through the darkness, fixing intentionally on Nora’s cracked door. A calculating smirk played on her lips. She was weaponizing this blackout, deliberately dragging the guard away to give Nora the exact window needed to flee. Daphne wanted Nora gone. If Nora ran, she wouldn't be there to save Leo.
Seizing the opportunity, Nora slipped out of her room. She melted into the shadows and rushed down the concrete fire escape, her feet hitting the cold stairs as she bolted toward freedom.
Two floors down, emergency fluorescent lights flickered and buzzed to life.
A doctor rushed down the hall toward Julian, a triumphant smile stretching across his face. "Mr. Crawford, miracle news! Ms. Sterling’s comprehensive bone marrow test is a match with Mr. Leo. We can proceed with the life-saving donation immediately."
A profound weight lifted off Julian’s shoulders. The crushing tension that had kept him rigidly awake melted into deep relief. "Prep the operation ward right now."
"Right away, sir."
But Julian’s relief evaporated the second he turned his head. Daphne hurried down the hall, directly escorted by the exact bodyguard assigned to watch Nora.
Julian’s eyes darkened, locking onto the guard. The hallway temperature seemed to plummet. "Why are you here?"
The bodyguard froze, realizing the catastrophic lapse in security. She fumbled for her radio. "Check if Ms. Sterling is in her room."
Silence answered.
"Owen!" Julian barked, his voice laced with venom.
Owen materialized from a nearby junction. "Sir?"
"Check the backup surveillance cameras. Find out where she went."
Owen pulled out his tablet, his fingers flying across the screen. He pulled up the external feeds. "Mr. Kensington just drove his car past the front gate. He picked up Ms. Nora during the blackout."
Julian stared at the frozen frame of Roman’s car. The puzzle pieces snapped together in his paranoid mind. Orchestrating a blackout in a hospital where his son lay on life support was no different than trying to murder Leo in his hospital bed.
An apocalyptic rage ignited in Julian’s chest. He did not say another word. He spun on his heel and descended to the underground parking basement. He threw himself into the driver’s seat of his black Rolls-Royce Phantom, slammed his foot on the gas, and tore out into the night in dangerous pursuit.
Inside the speeding Bentley, Nora collapsed against the leather seats, breathless and exhausted. She felt a tiny sliver of safety as the hospital disappeared behind them.
The atmosphere inside the cabin was heavy. Roman reached over and took her cold, trembling hands. His handsome face tightened with deep sorrow.
"Nora, I need to tell you something," Roman started, his tone grave. "I received an update earlier. The adoptive parents have taken Hazel abroad. They moved her out of our reach."
The blow hit Nora like a physical strike. She gasped, a fresh wave of agony tearing through her. Before she could process the staggering loss of her daughter, Roman squeezed her hands, delivering the second strike.
"And Stella," Roman continued, his voice thick. "The ambulance got her to the public hospital. Her acute leukemia has pushed her into critical condition. The doctors stated she needs an immediate transplant to survive the night."
The cruel reality suffocated Nora. The walls of the car felt like they were shrinking. She wanted to save both Leo and Stella, but time was out. A choice had to be made.
"We are going to the hospital for Stella’s surgery first," Nora resolved, her voice cracking but firm. She pulled out her phone, the screen lighting up with the photo of her two girls. Tears slipped past her lashes, falling steadily onto the glowing glass. She traced their tiny faces with a shaking thumb, silently begging Leo for his forgiveness.
Seeing her break down, Roman gently reached over. He used his thumb to wipe the tears from her cheek.
"Do not ignore me like you did five years ago in prison," Roman murmured. "No matter what happens, even if the world turns its back on you and abandons you, I will always be your best friend. I am the one person you can trust."
Before Nora could respond, the chauffeur screamed.
He slammed hard on the brakes. The Bentley skidded, tires shrieking against the asphalt. Nora and Roman were thrown forward against the seats.
A massive black Rolls-Royce had swerved across the lanes, blocking their path.
Through the windshield, Nora saw the driver’s door open. Julian stepped out into the busy street. He ignored the blaring horns of the surrounding traffic. He stormed over, half-shadowed by the dim, flickering streetlights. His high-society grace had vanished. He radiated a bloodthirsty, unhinged aura. He looked like a vengeful ghost clawing his way out of hell to claim a soul.
Julian reached the Bentley and grabbed the heavy door handle, tearing it open with brute force.
The cold night air rushed in, accompanied by his towering, murderous glare. Nora’s heart hammered against her ribs. Terror filled her eyes as she shrank back against the leather seats.
"Julian, please listen..." she pleaded shakily.
But Julian’s eyes brimmed with lethal intent. He cut off her plea, his voice dropping into a guttural snarl.
"Nora Sterling, you're asking to be killed!"
