Chapter Four : The Disguise and the PI

A brutal, throbbing headache pulled Sienna from a heavy, dreamless sleep. Her mouth tasted like dry sawdust, and the harsh morning sunlight slicing through the living room blinds felt like a physical assault on her retinas. She groaned, pushing her stiff body up from the cushions of her expensive sofa. She was still wearing yesterday’s clothes, the fabric wrinkled and clinging uncomfortably to her skin.

Sitting on the glass coffee table right in front of her was an empty wine bottle. She stared at the green glass, the reality of last night rushing back in a flood of sharp memories. She had downed every last drop. A dull ache settled at the base of her skull, punishing her for the indulgence. However, beneath the pounding hangover, another sensation anchored her chest.

She braced herself for the crushing devastation of a betrayed wife, waiting for the familiar ache of heartbreak to tear her apart. But it never came. Instead, a profound, overwhelming wave of relief washed over her. Gavin’s infidelity was no longer a nagging suspicion; it was a confirmed reality. He was a cheating bastard, and she was finally free to stop pretending their marriage was anything but a hollow sham.

What an arrogant, shortsighted fool he was. Did Gavin truly believe he could permanently control her? Did he think his charm was potent enough to magically bypass the ironclad prenuptial agreement her billionaire father had forced him to sign before they exchanged vows? The terms of that contract were vicious and unforgiving. An infidelity clause dictated that if Gavin strayed, he walked away with zero spousal support, zero assets, and zero dignity. He would get nothing, and now she had the exact leverage she needed to enforce it.

Sienna reached for her laptop resting on the edge of the coffee table and flipped open the screen. Last night, fueled by a bottle of wine and cold fury, she had typed up a meticulous, heavily detailed timeline of his affairs. She scrolled through the document, reviewing pages of cross-referenced dates, late-night "meetings," suspicious credit card charges, and unexplained absences. It was a staggering amount of data. She hit save, snapped the laptop shut, and stood up. A ruthless battle plan began to take shape in her mind.

She walked straight to the bathroom and stripped off her wrinkled clothes, dropping them in a heap on the floor. Stepping under the scalding hot spray of the shower, she let the water beat against her skin, washing away the lingering traces of alcohol and fatigue. The fog in her mind rapidly cleared. She needed to systematically gather undeniable legal evidence. She needed to discreetly contact the most vicious divorce lawyer in the city.

Above all else, she had to flawlessly maintain her carefully constructed disguise at work. Absolutely no one at the prestigious Kensington Industries could ever know about her messy personal life. Her position as CFO was hard-won. Any sign of domestic drama would be weaponized against her, especially by her terrifyingly brilliant, ruthless boardroom rival and boss, Camden Kensington. Camden would view a messy public divorce as a glaring weakness, an opportunity to tear her down in their next corporate clash.

Stepping out of the shower, Sienna dried off and stood before the wide bathroom mirror. It was time for the daily, grueling transformation into her corporate alter ego. She grabbed a brush and pulled her vibrant, flowing red hair back, twisting it into a severe bun at the nape of her neck. She pinned it tightly until not a single red strand was visible. Next, she grabbed the high-quality, itchy brown wig from its stand and pulled it aggressively over her scalp, adjusting the dull, lifeless strands to frame her face.

She opened her makeup drawer and applied only the bare minimum, using a pale foundation to wash out her natural complexion and hide the lingering effects of the wine. Reaching for the thick, clear-rimmed glasses, she slid them onto the bridge of her nose. The frames instantly obscured her striking cheekbones. Finally, she stepped into her walk-in closet and pulled out a drab, shapeless, muddy-gray pantsuit. The garment was deliberately tailored two sizes too big, hanging off her frame like a heavy sack.

Staring at her reflection, Sienna Winslow was gone. Standing in her place was Ruth Dalton: the seemingly boring, plain, hyper-competent CFO. This hideous suit and itchy wig formed her perfect, impenetrable armor. It was designed strictly to ensure she was constantly underestimated by her peers and judged entirely on her own brilliant mathematical merits, rather than constantly being accused of riding her billionaire father’s coattails.

Just as she finished adjusting the oversized collar of her blouse, her phone buzzed loudly against the marble counter.

She picked it up. A text from Gavin lit up the screen: *Heading home shortly to take a shower and change before work. I know you must be on the way to the office. See you tonight, Baby.*

Sienna’s jaw tightened in pure revulsion. She knew for an absolute fact that he had just spent the entire night sweating profusely all over his nineteen-year-old mistress. Now, he expected to waltz back into their apartment and act like the loving, devoted husband. The thought of him walking through the front door made her stomach turn.

She needed ample time to properly solidify her legal trap without him hovering around. Tapping the screen, she quickly typed back a smooth, calculated lie: *Having an early breakfast with friends. Won't be there. Have a good day at work.*

Hitting send, she immediately opened a new tab on her phone browser. If Gavin was sleeping with their teenage housekeeper, there was no telling who else he was screwing behind her back. She found a private, discreet medical clinic in Midtown and aggressively tapped the screen to book a comprehensive STD blood test for that afternoon. She mentally prepared herself to murder Gavin with her bare hands if he had infected her with anything deadly.

Next, she dialed an electronics supply store. She ordered several high-tech, motion-activated hidden cameras, paying extra for immediate courier delivery directly to her corporate office later that day.

By 11:25 AM, the morning sun was glaring over the city streets. Sienna sat completely upright in a deliberately bland, inconspicuous waiting room inside a Midtown office building. The walls were painted a forgettable beige, and the generic artwork hanging on the walls offered no clues to the business conducted inside. This was the office of Arthur Briggs, a highly discreet private investigator her father had utilized in the past.

"Mrs. Dalton?" A receptionist appeared from a side door. "Mr. Briggs will see you now."

Sienna stood up, clutching her oversized designer purse, and followed the receptionist down a short, carpeted hallway. Arthur Briggs rose from behind a heavy oak desk as she entered his corner office. He was a man in his early fifties, sporting salt-and-pepper hair and the rugged, broad-shouldered physique of a former cop. He possessed the kind of generic, unmemorable face that allowed him to blend seamlessly into any crowd.

Arthur gestured to a leather chair opposite his desk, his expression strictly professional. He made no comment on her muddy-gray suit or the dreadful brown wig.

"Sienna. It's been a while," Arthur said, taking his seat. "Your father mentioned you got married a few years ago."

"I did," Sienna replied, taking a seat and keeping her posture rigid. "And that marriage is the exact reason I need to speak with you today."

Arthur leaned back, nodding slowly. "Personal matters usually involve marriages. Either the beginning of them, or the bitter end."

Sienna unzipped her oversized purse. She reached inside, pulled out a sealed plastic bag, and dropped it heavily onto the center of his desk. The plastic made a sharp slapping sound against the wood. Inside the bag rested the piece of evidence that had shattered the illusion of her life.

"I found this bright pink thong shoved deep into my couch cushions last night," Sienna said, her voice devoid of any emotion. "It is not mine."

Arthur stared at the bag. He had seen far worse in his line of work. He didn't even blink. "Your husband?"

"Gavin Dalton. Corporate attorney at Stanton & Ward," Sienna stated. She reached back into her purse and retrieved a massive, heavy folder. She handed the investigator a heavily detailed, cross-referenced dossier. "This contains his daily movements, his known bank accounts, his gym schedule, and a full profile on our perky nineteen-year-old housekeeper, Chloe Mercer. I suspect she is the one he is sleeping with."

Arthur opened the folder, his eyebrows rising slightly as he flipped through the staggering amount of data she had already compiled. Spreadsheets, highlighted dates, and printed text logs stared back at him.

"I need irrefutable, court-admissible evidence of his infidelity," Sienna instructed, her tone freezing over. "High-definition photos. Video footage if at all possible. It needs to be undeniable. It must be enough to seamlessly uphold the strict infidelity clause in our prenuptial agreement without a single legal loophole for him to exploit."

Arthur studied the pages, visibly impressed by her terrifying thoroughness. "You’ve done half my job already, Mrs. Dalton."

"What is your timeline?" she demanded, ignoring the compliment.

"Given the amount of background information you've provided, I estimate a maximum of two weeks for round-the-clock surveillance to catch him in the act," Arthur answered confidently, pulling a pen from his breast pocket and jotting down a note. "If he is overly cautious, it might take a few days longer. But men like this usually slip up."

"That is acceptable. I will set up hidden cameras in my own home this evening to expedite the process," Sienna said.

Arthur paused, looking at her with a steady, calculating gaze. "One more thing. Do you want to be informed of the gritty, painful personal details of the affair as they unfold? Some clients prefer to know every word spoken. They want the raw truth, no matter how much it hurts."

Sienna felt a brief flare of disgust. Did she want to know if Gavin was whispering the same exact dirty promises to a teenager that he had once whispered to her? Absolutely not.

"Just what's necessary for legal purposes," she stated flatly, refusing to let him see any vulnerability. "I do not need the gritty details."

"Understood." Arthur stood up, signaling the end of the meeting. "I will get a team on his office building this afternoon. I'm sorry you're going through this, Mrs. Dalton."

Sienna stood up, gripping the strap of her purse. "It will be Ms. Winslow soon, and don't be," she replied, slightly surprised by the genuine sincerity ringing in her own voice. "This marriage has been over for a very long time. I just needed a concrete reason to finally admit it to myself."

She took a step toward the door before turning back to face the investigator. "One final instruction. Keep this entire investigation completely hidden from my father. If he finds out, he will intervene and ruin my legal strategy. I am the client, not him."

"Client confidentiality is my priority," Arthur assured her.

Sienna nodded, pulling out her phone. She wired a massive retainer fee directly into his business account with a few quick taps, the transaction clearing instantly. Without another word, she strode confidently out of the office and made her way down to the underground parking garage.

Once safely back inside the quiet interior of her luxury sedan, Sienna let out a long, controlled breath. Step one of her exit strategy was in motion. She glanced at the digital clock on the dashboard. It was just past noon. She had enough time to find a quiet cafe, order a proper meal, and enjoy a relaxing lunch before returning to the corporate grind.

Suddenly, her phone forcefully pinged.

It wasn't a standard text message alert. It was the sharp, distinct chime of a high-priority corporate email. Sienna unlocked the screen and opened her inbox. The sender’s name made her blood pressure spike.

*Camden Kensington.*

She tapped the message, her eyes scanning the brief, demanding text.

*URGENT: Boston Deal Revisions. Need completed slides by 4 PM today for my second meeting with the investors at 4:30 PM. New parameters attached. See it gets done.*

Sienna stared at the glaring screen in absolute disbelief. It was a ruthless, thankless, bordering-on-abusive order. Camden wanted her to completely redo the massive financial presentation she had already perfected to his exact, impossible specifications just yesterday evening. There was no polite request. There was no acknowledgment of the grueling hours she had already poured into the project. It was just a cold, hard demand from a boss who expected total perfection at a moment's notice.

"Goddamnit, Kensington," Sienna muttered angrily through gritted teeth.

She gripped the leather steering wheel, her knuckles turning white from the pressure. She aggressively reached out and hit the push-to-start button. The sedan’s engine roared to life, echoing loudly in the concrete parking structure.

Her plans for a quiet, relaxing lunch were completely ruined. There was no time for a cafe now. The Boston deal was the most critical acquisition of the quarter, and Camden would gladly rip her apart in front of the entire executive board if those slides were not flawless by four o'clock.

Throwing the car into drive, Sienna hit the gas. She would just have to grab a stale snack from the corporate break room and head straight back into the lion's den.
