The Nanny Contract

Just as Declan reached for the heavy oak handle, preparing to storm out and leave the cowardly woman to her fate, the door cracked open. His secretary poked her head through the narrow gap, her face flushed with nervous excitement.

"Mr. Lancaster, there is a pretty lady waiting at the front reception desk for you," she announced officially.

Dalton, standing just behind the secretary, frowned in sharp disapproval. "Don't you know Mr. Lancaster prohibits uninvited guests from wandering up here? Send her away."

Declan paused mid-step. For a split second, his mind wondered if the mystery guest was actually Chloe. He quickly dismissed the ridiculous notion. That mundane woman from the countryside with her atrocious fashion sense could never earn the label 'pretty' from anyone with working eyes. She belonged in frumpy clothes, not waiting in his opulent lobby.

The secretary nodded obediently, retreating to the reception desk. "I'm sorry, Miss," she murmured to the guest, maintaining a polite, professional smile. "Mr. Lancaster isn't accepting visitors right now."

Chloe brushed a stray chestnut curl behind her ear, taking a deep breath to rein in her flaring temper. She had rushed across the city in uncomfortable high heels, mentally preparing for a grueling battle, only to be dismissed like a petty nuisance.

"He invited me himself!" she snapped, her voice echoing loudly off the pristine marble walls of the lobby. "What is the meaning of turning me away now? I did my part. I surrendered! Why is he treating me like I'm less than a human being?"

The secretary blinked in genuine shock. In all her years working at Apex Global, nobody had ever dared to raise their voice at the president, let alone hurl insults at him in the middle of his own corporate headquarters.

Meanwhile, Declan and Dalton stepped out of the office, heading silently toward the private elevators. The sharp click of Declan's leather shoes masked his approach as Chloe's voice pitched even higher.

"The customer is always right!" Chloe ranted, waving her arm at the stunned receptionist. She was livid, venting her massive, pent-up frustration onto the poor girl without a shred of remorse. "If it wasn't for our hard-earned money paying his exorbitant bills, how exactly would he run this entire business?"

The secretary’s eyes widened in sheer panic as she spotted the tall, imposing figure looming right behind the complaining woman. She immediately dropped her gaze, frantically shuffling loose papers on her desk to look busy and avoid the dark, bloodthirsty look in her boss's eyes.

"Oh, Chloe..." Declan growled, his deep voice dripping with lethal menace through gritted teeth.

Chloe froze. The blood drained from her face in an instant. She spun around on her heels, nearly losing her balance, to find Declan standing mere inches away. His hands were tucked casually into his tailored slacks, but his dark eyes glared daggers into her skull.

A nervous, forced smile immediately stretched across her face. Her aggressive demeanor vanished in an instant, drastically changing into a jittery, hollow politeness. She gripped the leather strap of her bag so tight her knuckles turned white.

"Mr. Lancaster!" she chirped. She desperately wanted to sink into the polished floorboards. Why hadn't she checked her blind spots? She knew how ruthless he was, yet here she was, publicly ridiculing his corporate practices to his own staff.

Declan didn't offer a polite reply. He just stared down at her trembling frame. "Come in with me," he commanded, turning his broad back to her and striding toward his private office.

Chloe hesitated, her feet glued to the floor. The memory of his suffocating presence in that room the day before made her stomach twist into knots. She dreaded being trapped alone with him again.

"Sir Lancaster," she babbled, her voice trembling slightly as she desperately tried to formulate an excuse. "How about we just chat out here? I'm swamped today. My mother's paperwork takes up so much of my schedule, I really shouldn't linger—"

Declan stopped dead in his tracks. He turned his head slowly to glare at her over his shoulder. "How busy are you?"

"No, no, I mean you are the busy one!" she backpedaled, waving her hands defensively in front of her chest. She took a tiny step backward, inching toward the safety of the elevators. "You have a million things to do. I don't want to take up your precious time. Let's just say what needs to be said in the hallway."

Declan glanced at his sleek wristwatch, his jaw clenching in annoyance. He fixed his cold gaze on her retreating figure and dropped a single, calculated question.

"Chloe, do you want to see Lachlan?"

The mention of her firstborn son hit her like a physical tether. Her breath hitched in her throat. All thoughts of fleeing evaporated into thin air. Defeated and silenced, she lowered her head and obediently followed him through the heavy oak doors into his office.

Declan rounded his massive glass desk and sank into his black leather swivel chair. He steepled his fingers, his eyes sweeping critically over the woman standing awkwardly before him. Underneath his icy exterior, a flicker of genuine surprise crossed his mind. Dressed in a crisp white shirt and a fitted green pencil skirt, she actually looked human and presentable. The tailored clothes hugged her slender curves, and her loose maroon waves framed her face nicely.

His face, however, remained an unreadable mask of ice. He picked up a thick legal document from his desk and casually tossed it across the glass surface.

"Sign it," he ordered softly.

Chloe stepped forward, eyeing the pristine white pages with deep suspicion. She picked up the packet and started carefully scanning the dense legal jargon. As she parsed the fine print, she physically balked in horror. Her heart slammed against her ribs.

It was an explicitly worded medical exemption contract. The clauses permitted Apex Global Hospital to use her critically ill mother as a literal human guinea pig for unproven, experimental treatments. Furthermore, the financial compensation listed in the highly likely event of death was a pathetic, meager sum. Worse, signing the document forced Chloe to waive any and all rights to legally appeal or sue the hospital. She would be signing away her mother's life.

Disgust coiled tightly in her gut. She threw the stack of papers back across the glass desk, the pages scattering slightly.

"This is the work of a capitalist tyrant," she spat, her voice shaking with righteous anger. "I refuse to accept these horrific terms."

Declan did not blink. He remained seated, watching her outburst with chilling calm.

"You love using my mother against me, don't you?" Chloe demanded, vehemently refusing to back down. "Mr. Lancaster, I know you want revenge! Take it out directly on my physical body! Do whatever you want to me, but leave a dying old lady out of this. Aren't you afraid of retribution?"

Declan slowly raised a single dark eyebrow. "You just called me a capitalist," he replied softly. "Does it make sense for a capitalist to willingly suffer a loss when dealing with business?"

"As long as I refuse to sign that piece of trash, it doesn't take effect," Chloe declared, lifting her chin stubbornly. "I will never do business with you."

A chilling smile touched the corner of Declan's mouth. "Do you honestly think I can’t easily afford to pay for minor medical negligence if your mother died in Apex Global?”

His calm voice echoed in the quiet office. A cold, suffocating wave of realization washed over Chloe.

Her mother was already in his hospital. She was sleeping in a bed owned by his company, hooked up to machines monitored by his staff. Whether Chloe signed this paper or not, her mother's fragile life rested in his tyrannical control. The only difference this contract made was protecting his massive wealth from a petty lawsuit.

The fight drained out of her posture. A profound defeat settled into her hazel eyes as she stared blankly at the glass desk.

Seeing her shattered resistance, Declan leaned forward. He picked up the contract, flipped it to the final page she had ignored in her initial rage, and pushed it back toward her edge of the desk.

"You should decide whether or not to agree after reading this," he instructed haughtily.

Chloe took the document suspiciously. She read the final clause and froze. According to the explicitly worded text, Declan was using her mother's continued medical treatment as direct leverage to force Chloe to serve as Lachlan’s personal, live-in nanny for a period of one month.

Reading this clause, Chloe felt a sudden rush of pure adrenaline. She was thrilled. Her heart soared at the unexpected, miraculous chance to finally see and physically care for her very first baby after five agonizing years of separation. She would likely accept this role even without the cruel threat to her mother's life hanging over her head.

Yet, outwardly, she remained deeply unnerved by his sudden, bizarre generosity. She looked up from the paper, staring at the imposing man behind the desk. She knew Declan too well. There was no way he would offer her such a wonderful opportunity without a massive catch.

"Are you really going to let me see our son?" she asked, her voice thick with skepticism and fragile hope.

Declan’s eyes darkened instantly. His jaw clenched in visible annoyance.

"Chloe, watch your words,” he replied testily, spelling out his next sentence word by word. “He’s my son, not yours."

He leaned back, his gaze pinning her in place. "I’ll allow you to physically see him and live with him, but with one strict, non-negotiable condition."

"And that is?" Chloe whispered, bracing herself.

"Without my direct permission, you can never, ever tell him that you’re his biological mother."
