The Capitalist Tyrant
The midday heat pressing against the windows of the humble rental house in Prosper Town offered no comfort as Chloe pressed the phone against her ear. Her knuckles turned a stark shade of white, the plastic casing of her mobile device creaking under the pressure of her grip. On the other end of the line, a crisp administrative voice from Apex Global Hospital rattled off a series of logistical updates that made Chloe’s blood run cold.
"Miss Chloe, we are calling to inform you that your mother's admission application has been processed and accepted," the hospital staff member stated in a clipped, professional tone. "Due to the delicate nature of her medical condition, the administration has made an exception. She has been successfully admitted to our premium care facility. We took the liberty of transferring the patient to our top-tier wards ahead of schedule. Please ensure the hospitalization fee of exactly three hundred thousand yuan is paid in full within the next twenty-four hours."
Chloe stood frozen in the middle of her cramped living room. Her mind struggled to process the astronomical number. Three hundred thousand yuan. Just yesterday, she had visited that exact hospital to submit the paperwork, only to be rejected by multiple staff members who cited a dozen different bureaucratic excuses. Now, they had miraculously bypassed every protocol, physically moving her seriously ill mother without seeking any prior legal consent.
Only one person possessed the power, the money, and the sheer malice to orchestrate such a ruthless maneuver.
Anger surged through her veins, flushing her cheeks. "Who gave you permission to transfer my mother without authorization?" she snapped into the receiver, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. "You will return her immediately to her original ward, or I will sue your establishment for everything it has."
A heartbeat of silence followed her threat. Then, the line crackled slightly, and a chillingly familiar voice replaced the administrator.
"Oh, Chloe..."
The deep, haughty timber vibrating through the speaker made the tiny hairs on her arms stand straight up. A wave of sheer terror washed over her. Declan Lancaster. His tone carried a mocking superiority that instantly transported her back to the darkest corners of her memories.
She swallowed hard, forcing her trembling vocal cords to work. Desperately mustering every ounce of courage she had left, she prepared to face him. She refused to let him hear the fear rattling her ribcage.
"Why, someone just told me that you are going to sue me?" Declan asked softly. The unbothered cadence of his voice felt like a subtle, unstated threat hanging heavy in the air.
Chloe refused to back down. If he wanted to play dirty, she would call his bluff. She knew exactly what he held over her head—the scandalous, drugged encounter from five years ago. If she dragged him into a public courtroom, his pristine reputation would take a massive hit.
"I would be honored to see you in court, Sir Lancaster," she sneered right back into the phone, projecting a false bravado she did not feel. She gripped the edge of the kitchen counter for support. "I will have to thank you in advance for having my name personally make all sorts of front-page headlines when the media gets hold of our shared history!"
Miles away, sitting comfortably behind the expansive desk in his office, Declan remained unfazed by her loud declaration. The corner of his mouth curved into a dark, predatory smirk. He knew she was bluffing.
"How shameless," he replied, his voice dropping an octave. "Aren’t you afraid that your harsh words might cause even more physical harm to your poor mother?"
Chloe’s breath hitched. He had struck her ultimate, most vulnerable weak point with the absolute precision of a seasoned hunter closing in on its prey.
"Listen closely," Declan warned coldly, stripping away any trace of amusement. "I will be waiting for you in my office to discuss your mother's ongoing treatment. If you do not physically arrive at the hospital within exactly thirty minutes, your critically ill mother will be immediately removed from specialist care. I will personally hand her over to a medical intern who has never treated a patient in their life. The choice is yours."
The direct threat to her mother's fragile life shattered Chloe's gallant, defiant facade into a million pieces. The fight drained from her posture, leaving her shoulders slumped in defeat. Her mother suffered from late-stage uremia; even seasoned specialists struggled to keep her stable. An inexperienced intern would spell certain death within hours.
Dropping her voice into a pathetic, desperate plea, she abandoned her pride. "No, please. As long as you let go of my mother, I will obey you to the word. I will do whatever you say."
Declan let out a harsh scoff, internally marveling at her incredible ability to switch from a fierce lioness to a weeping victim in mere seconds. Without offering a single word of reassurance or accepting her surrender verbally, he abruptly disconnected the call.
The dial tone buzzed loudly in Chloe's ear. Staring blankly at the dead screen of her phone, she let out a massive, heavy sigh. A deep sense of dread settled in her stomach as she realized the impending trap closing around her. She had just managed to slip out of his grasp yesterday, and now she had to march right back into his clutches on her own accord.
Standing quietly in the corner of the small living room, her perceptive children, Lettie and Benji, watched her emotional breakdown with intense curiosity.
Benji leaned over, cupping his hand around his mouth as he whispered sagely to his sister. "Mommy must be going through early menopause. I heard some kids at school say their moms sigh all day like that when it happens. From the moment they wake up, they yell. She just needs a husband to scold to release her pent-up anger. Since she does not have one, all she can do is sigh."
Hearing her brother's flawless logic, Lettie immediately stepped forward. She dropped her favorite toy block and padded over to Chloe, wrapping her little arms around her mother's waist. She looked up, her large eyes filled with sweet innocence.
"Don't be sad, Mommy," Lettie comforted her. "I will go out to the street right now and find a husband for you so you can yell at him whenever you feel mad."
Chloe blinked, momentarily pulled from her despair by the sheer absurdity of the conversation. She gently pinched Lettie's soft cheek, offering a small, reassuring smile to mask the turmoil brewing inside her.
"Mommy is not mad, and I do not need you to find me a husband," Chloe explained softly, tucking a stray lock of hair behind Lettie's ear. "I just need to go to the hospital right now to fight some really big monsters with your grandma. You two need to be good and stay here while I handle things."
The moment the word 'monsters' left her lips, Benji's eyes widened. He spun around on his heels and dashed straight into the bathroom, his little footsteps thudding against the floorboards. A clatter of plastic echoed down the narrow hallway before he reappeared, clutching a nozzle-equipped cosmetic spray bottle. He marched up to Chloe and presented the mysterious concoction with utmost seriousness.
"Enhanced pepper spray," Benji declared, puffing his little chest out to show his fierce protectiveness. "If that bad man from yesterday tries to bully you again, you take this out and spray his eyes directly. You will blind him for sure."
Touched by her son's fierce protectiveness, Chloe took the makeshift weapon and slipped it into her handbag.
She turned toward her modest closet, her mind racing with her next moves. Declan had already unmasked her. He knew she had faked her death five years ago, making her ridiculous disguises and heavy makeup pointless. If she was walking into a battle, she needed her armor. She refused to look like a victim.
She abandoned her oversized, frumpy clothes and reached for something different. Moments later, she emerged from her bedroom wearing a crisp, tailored white dress shirt tucked into a tightly fitted green pencil skirt that accentuated her slender curves. She let her maroon waves fall loose over her shoulders, applied a light layer of fresh makeup, and slipped into a pair of sharp high heels.
As she grabbed her purse and confidently stepped out the front door, the twins scrambled to the living room window. They pressed their faces against the glass, watching their mother stride down the pavement with an air of elegance.
"Why did Mommy dress up so nice today?" Benji wondered aloud, his dark pupils tracking her elegant figure until she disappeared around the corner.
Lettie huffed, crossing her arms with an innocent but firm conclusion. "This is beyond your understanding, Benji. Mommy is clearly planning to use her exceptional beauty as a physical weapon against the monsters."
Benji merely rolled his eyes, resting his chin on the windowsill. "I just hope that feminine tactic does not backfire on her," he mumbled cynically.
Meanwhile, high above the bustling streets of the city, inside the pristine walls of Apex Global Hospital, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Declan sat imposingly behind his massive desk in the president’s office. The sprawling city skyline stretched out behind him, but his dark, piercing gaze remained fixed on his limited-edition wristwatch. The gold hands ticked by, mocking him with every second that passed.
Exactly forty minutes had already passed since he hung up the phone.
His deep frown etched harsh lines into his handsome face. He drummed his fingers against the polished mahogany wood. Had that accursed, cowardly woman actually chickened out? She had sounded so desperate on the phone. Were all her tearful promises of submission just more empty, manipulative words designed to buy her time?
The longer he sat there, the more his arrogance twisted into sharp impatience. He refused to be made a fool of by someone who had spent the last five years hiding in the shadows.
His tall, lean frame rose forcefully from the leather executive chair. He buttoned his suit jacket with crisp, precise movements and slammed his finger down on the intercom button on his desk.
"Dalton, get my car," he barked aggressively, his commanding voice echoing through the quiet office.
On the other end of the line, sitting at his station just outside the doors, Dalton jumped at the sudden command. He leaned toward the speaker, nervously adjusting his glasses.
"Mr. Lancaster, aren’t we waiting here for Chloe to arrive?" Dalton asked, confusion bleeding into his tone over the speaker. "You gave her a thirty-minute window."
"You actually think she has the nerve to show up?" Declan spat incredulously, entirely convinced that the cowardly woman completely lacked the nerve to show her face.
