Unmasking the Disguise

Deep inside the secure monitoring room of Apex Global Hospital, the atmosphere felt suffocating. Declan Lancaster stood motionless, hands clasped behind his back. His sharp eyes remained glued to the high-definition security screen illuminating the dim space. Beside him, his loyal subordinate Dalton shifted his weight, hesitating before voicing the doubt clawing at his mind.

"Sir," Dalton began, gesturing toward the live feed. "The woman on the monitor... she looks nothing like the target." Dalton cataloged the bizarre appearance of the woman in the lobby. She wore an outrageously loud punk outfit. Thick, artificial dreadlocks spilled over her shoulders. Her face was a canvas of aggressive cat-eye makeup and dark lipstick. She looked different from the plain woman they had spent the last half-decade hunting.

Declan did not blink. "Zoom in," he ordered.

The operator scrambled to comply, clicking the mouse. The camera magnified her face, filling the screen with her specific facial structure and subtle body language.

Declan narrowed his eyes. Certainty settled over his features like an iron mask. It was her. A massive blow struck his guarded self-esteem. His chest flared with a sudden, sharp heat as he forcefully recalled the sheer humiliation of it all. This supposedly uneducated commoner had outwitted him. She had slipped right through his million-dollar net, flawlessly faking her death five years prior. The memory tasted like ash.

"Dalton," Declan sneered. His voice held no trace of mercy, ringing cold in the room. "Seize her and tie her up."

Out in the brightly lit public hallway of the hospital, Chloe sat rigidly on a plastic waiting chair. Her leg bounced against the linoleum floor. Anxiety gnawed at her stomach. She felt flummoxed and was growing suspicious by the minute. The hospital staff had been feeding her inexplicable delays regarding her critically ill mother's official admission. First, they claimed a glitch in the system. Then, they cited a sudden shortage of available beds.

Her rising frustration morphed into pure, icy dread the moment she heard heavy footsteps approaching. Dalton marched down the sterile corridor. He was flanked by several thick-muscled men dressed in strict black uniforms. They moved with predatory grace, forming a tight perimeter around her plastic chair.

Chloe’s heart pounded against her ribs. The harsh reality crashed over her. She had willingly walked straight into a carefully laid trap. Her fingers dug into the edge of the seat as she evaluated the massive men looming over her. She could never physically fight her way out of this circle. Drawing a slow breath, she desperately tried to maintain her composure beneath the thick layers of makeup.

Dalton stepped forward. He offered a polite, hollow smile. "Miss, would you please come with us?"

Chloe forced her voice to remain steady. "Who are you? And why should I go with you?"

Before she could attempt to slip past him, Dalton leaned in. The fake smile vanished, and his tone dropped into a blatant threat. "Don't make us use force. Our men tend to be a bit rough. One small mishap, and we might break one of your limbs by accident."

Chloe swallowed hard. She intimately knew Declan's ruthless, unforgiving nature. These men would not hesitate to snap her bones right here in the open hallway. Evaluating her nonexistent options, she yielded quietly. She stood up, kept her chin level, and allowed the intimidating group to herd her down a restricted corridor.

They escorted her toward an executive lounge hidden away from the public eye. Upon reaching the heavy mahogany door, Dalton forcefully shoved her inside. Chloe stumbled forward, her boots skidding across the polished hardwood floor before she managed to catch her balance and come to a halt.

Sitting still in a luxurious black leather rocking chair was Declan Lancaster.

He emanated a nauseating aura of arrogance. He looked like a king presiding over an execution. His dark, predatory eyes immediately locked onto her painted face.

"Wash your face clean with that sink over there," Declan ordered sharply, his deep voice echoing in the quiet room.

Chloe clenched her jaw. Deciding her only play was to act the fool, she deliberately altered her vocal pitch, making it higher. "Mister, it’s natural for a woman to want to look her best," she retorted defensively. She injected a tone of indignation into her words, acting dumb in a desperate bid to mask her rising, terrified fury. "You’re being unreasonable and impolite."

Declan stopped rocking. The chair stilled. He leaned forward severely, resting his elbows on his knees. His gaze sliced right through her facade. "My apologies, perhaps I just can’t see you as good-looking."

He tilted his head toward the imposing security guards lining the wall. "If you refuse, I'll get my people to do it for you."

Chloe realized she had no choice. She abruptly marched over to the stainless-steel sink tucked into the corner of the lounge. She turned on the faucet, gathered cold water, and splashed it onto her face. She swiped her palms over her skin once and turned back around. Water dripped from her chin, but her unchanged makeup remained intact. "I’m done," she announced stubbornly.

Declan’s eyebrows pulled together into a deep frown. He stood up slowly, his tall frame dominating the space. He closed the distance between them and reached out. He forcefully touched the garish, unstained makeup on her cheek. He inspected his thumb. Unstained.

"Is this waterproof makeup?" he asked, his tone dropping low, vibrating with suppressed anger. "I’ll give you three minutes. Clean up your face. Otherwise, I’ll have one of my men peel the skin off your face."

Chloe remained defiant. She marched away from him, threw herself onto the plush leather sofa opposite his chair, and crossed her arms over her chest. "I can't wash it off," she insisted.

Declan offered a sharp, wordless command. "Come in!"

The heavy door swung open, and the group of burly men flooded into the room. They swarmed the sofa in seconds.

"Hey! Get your hands off me!" Chloe shrieked as rough hands grabbed her by the back of the neck. Her breath hitched as a guard dug his thick fingers into her skin, holding her head in a vice grip. She thrashed against him, ignoring the bruising pressure. "You're acting like primitive monkeys!" she shouted in a desperate protest.

They ignored her frantic struggles. Another guard stepped in close, aiming a spray bottle. He blasted harsh chemical makeup remover straight onto her closed eyelids and cheeks. The caustic liquid seeped in, instantly burning her eyes.

Before she could gasp for air, a second man gripped her jaw. He produced a stiff-bristled toothbrush and began roughing up her delicate skin. He scrubbed her face with brute force, remaining indifferent to her pain as he dragged the hard bristles over her forehead, down her cheeks, and across her lips. The abrasive friction tore away the dark lipstick and thick eyeliner.

"Stop it!" Chloe cried out, her voice muffled as the bristles scraped her mouth.

A third guard stepped forward and doused her entire head and torso with cold mineral water. The freezing water cascaded over her face, washing away the toxic mixture of chemical remover and running ink.

Under this brutal, humiliating physical treatment, the heavy punk facade was stripped away. The dark water pooled on the floor, and her true, delicate features finally emerged.

Declan stepped forward, staring down at the dripping, panting woman. "Chloe Mercer!" he snarled. His handsome expression twisted into something ugly and wrathful.

At his silent signal, the guards released their hold and stepped back. Chloe slumped forward, coughing as water dripped from her matted hair. She was soaked to the bone, shivering from the cold air conditioning hitting her wet clothes. A flush of embarrassment stained her scrubbed cheeks. But as she lifted her head, the fear in her eyes vanished.

She glared fiercely up at him. She waved her small fists in the air, her chest heaving with defiant outrage. "So what if I’m Chloe? Bite me!" she yelled, looking furious.

Seeing her evident irritation and her lack of submission, Declan's evil smile only grew larger. He reflected on how that woman used to be a docile, obedient, and well-behaved puppet—so bland and tasteless in his memory. Who would have ever thought she turned out to be such a capable, scheming pot of black squid ink!
