The Empty Grave

The Empty Grave

The tires of the sleek Rolls-Royce crunched heavily against the gravel, gliding to a smooth halt just outside the looming, quiet wrought-iron gates of Pine's Hollow Cemetery. Penelope peered through the tinted passenger window, her eyes tracing the somber arched lettering above the entrance. All the vibrant color drained from her glamorous face in an instant. Her chest heaved in sudden panic as she turned toward the driver's seat.

"Why are we here?" she asked, her voice trembling as her hands gripped the edge of her leather purse. "I came back to visit Grandma. Is she... is her condition worse? Is Grandma here?"

Declan’s side profile remained carved from ice. He gripped the steering wheel for a second longer before killing the engine. "Chloe is."

Penelope let out a sharp gasp, an overwhelming wave of relief washing over her tense shoulders. She slumped back into the plush leather, breathing out a heavy sigh before deep bewilderment took over. Her usual teasing demeanor quickly resurfaced. "Chloe? She's buried here?" A sly smirk tugged at the corner of her lips. "It's not a holiday. We aren't doing ritual offerings. You still harbor lingering, unresolved feelings for your deceased wife, don't you? Taking time out of your busy day just to visit her gravesite."

Declan unbuckled his seatbelt, ignoring her bait as he pushed the heavy car door open.

Penelope scrambled out after him, her heels clicking against the pavement. "I mean, what else could explain that crazy genius baby of yours? You must have loved her on some level to produce a five-year-old hacker baby. Lachlan is living proof of your affection!"

Hearing his son’s name, Declan paused at the base of the stone steps. The towering cypress pines cast long, dark shadows over his handsome, aristocratic face, hardening his features into stone.

"Lachlan was an accident," Declan snapped, his tone bitter and unyielding. "He was not a result of love!"

Penelope rolled her eyes, smacking her lips in theatrical disapproval. "Since your genes are so spectacular, why don't you have more accidents? Seems like a waste of premium DNA if you ask me."

A minuscule trace of paternal warmth finally surfaced in Declan’s dark eyes. "Not every child will have Lachlan's tremendous good fortune of dodging his mother’s inferior, countryside genes." His son was a mirror image of him, both in physical stature and intellect. At merely five years old, the boy possessed technical skills that rivaled seasoned security experts.

Penelope scoffed, folding her arms. "Yeah, he got your intellect, but he caught all your worst flaws too. Mother says little Lachlan is exactly as haughty, arrogant, and frustratingly untalkative as you are. For a while, she thought he might be on the spectrum."

"Talk less," Declan commanded, brushing off the comparison. He saw no flaws in his son.

"Have you never met normal kids?" Penelope sighed, exasperated. "They cry. They laugh. They act like actual kids."

Declan’s mind drifted for a fraction of a second. The image of a fiercely defensive, strange little girl from the airport terminal flashed before his eyes. "I met one just now," he muttered. "Cute, sure, but unremarkable. If that’s the standard definition of a child, I’d rather Lachlan stay exactly the way he is."

Shaking off the memory, Declan focused entirely on the task at hand. He pulled a folded document from his coat pocket, scanning the burial registry. "Lot number 674."

Penelope froze beside him, her jaw dropping. "674? Go and die?" she gasped, translating the homophonic numbers aloud. "God, she really had terrible luck, didn't she? Getting stamped with a morbid number like that."

The highly intentional pun struck Declan’s mind like a bolt of lightning. He stopped dead in his tracks. The ambient temperature around him seemed to plummet below freezing, the autumn breeze turning into sharp ice against his skin.

Six. Seven. Four.

His mind raced, calculating the odds. Was this numeric insult a mere cosmic coincidence, or a meticulously planned ruse? A classic misdirection orchestrated by Chloe herself to mock him from beyond the grave?

His jaw clenched. He marched forward, his long strides eating up the distance between the rows of headstones. He navigated the winding paths of the cemetery until he reached the specific plot. He came to an abrupt halt. His entire body went rigid.

He stared unblinking at the polished gray granite. The elegant carving on the stone did not bear the name of his countryside wife. Instead, it proudly read: *Here lies Vivienne Prescott*.

Standing just behind his shoulder, Penelope shrieked aloud in sheer disbelief. "Oh my god! Declan, it's Vivienne!"

Declan remained silent, his dark gaze locked onto the carved letters.

"How does that make any sense?" Penelope questioned loudly, gesturing wildly at the grave. "Vivienne was a highly educated, sophisticated lady from a respectable and prestigious family! How could she possibly share a tombstone with someone like Chloe? The family widely regarded Chloe as an uncultured country bumpkin. They are total opposites!"

The gears in Declan’s head clicked violently into place. The truth snapped into focus, sharp and undeniable. His dark gaze turned menacing, a dangerous aura radiating from his tall frame.

"So, she’s not dead yet, huh?" he murmured, his voice laced with venom. "Well, she will be soon."

The absolute realization that Chloe had flawlessly played him for an absolute fool for five long years ignited a raging inferno within his chest. She had faked her death. She had left him this mocking breadcrumb. Without sparing another glance at the mocking tombstone, Declan pivoted on his heel and stormed back toward the iron gates.

He yanked open the driver’s side door of the Rolls-Royce, sliding into the seat and immediately dialing his trusted assistant, Dalton. The call connected on the second ring.

"Find a way to get patient Miriam’s family to transfer her to Apex Global Hospital asap!" Declan barked his orders, his knuckles white around the leather steering wheel.

On the other end of the line, Dalton fell silent, stunned. He clearly remembered the president previously vowing to never, under any circumstances, hear the name of Chloe's mother ever again. He had promised to pay the bills, but nothing more.

Recognizing the lethal tone in his boss's voice, Dalton swiftly swallowed his questions and complied. "Understood, sir. Right away."

Disconnecting the call, Declan stared out the windshield. A thin, incredibly ominous leer spread slowly across his perfectly sculpted lips.

Miles away, in the humble, bustling district of Prosper Town, a shrill ringtone shattered the quiet afternoon. Chloe wiped her hands on a damp towel and snatched up her vibrating phone.

"Hello?"

The voice on the other end belonged to her mother’s attending physician. The tone was strictly urgent. He informed her that due to her mother’s sudden and severe physical deterioration, the local clinic could no longer handle her complicated case. She urgently required an immediate transfer to the top-tier nephrology specialist located at Apex Global Hospital.

Upon hearing the hospital's name, Chloe's mind went blank. The phone felt like a brick of lead in her hand.

Apex Global was the absolute crown jewel of Declan's sprawling corporate territory. Agreeing to this transfer meant walking straight into the lion's den. She had spent the last five years building a quiet, hidden life, far away from the Lancaster family's suffocating grip. But her mother’s failing health left her cornered. She had no other choice.

Closing her eyes, Chloe gathered every ounce of her courage, praying desperately that Declan wouldn't remember her face after half a decade apart.

The very next day, determined to bypass his security and any roaming Lancaster staff, Chloe dumped her usual, unassuming ladylike demeanor. She sat in front of her dusty vanity mirror in favor of crafting a heavy, abrasive punk rock disguise.

She carefully wove thick, messy dreadlocks into her hair, pinning them tight against her scalp to hide her natural waves. She applied a thick coat of overlined crimson lipstick, painting on heavy black cat-eye eyeshadow that swallowed her natural features and hardened her gaze. Snatching a pair of comical round sunglasses from her drawer, she shoved them onto her face.

Arriving at Apex Global Hospital, Chloe kept her head down, navigating the pristine, sterile white corridors until she reached the main admission counter. She nervously stood before the glass partition, sliding her mother's thick medical file across the sleek desk to the doctor on duty.

The doctor took the file. He flipped open the cover, scanning the name. Chloe noticed his posture stiffen. He avoided her gaze, his eyes darting toward his monitor. He reached for his mouse.

Click. Click.

He moved slowly, deliberately pushing a hidden prompt on his screen.

Five floors above, inside the sprawling, soundproof expanse of the President's Office, a sharp chime echoed through the room.

Declan sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his dark eyes fixated on the glowing screen of his private phone. An automated notification popped up prominently in the center of the display.

He snatched the device off the desk eagerly. He tapped the notification, pulling up the live security feed from the ground floor admission counter. The camera angled down on a woman dripping in punk attire, sporting comical round sunglasses and a mess of dreadlocks. The disguise was abrasive, but the bone structure beneath the heavy crimson lipstick was unmistakable.

As he read the text alert on the screen and matched it to the live footage, a chilling, evil grin arched across his mesmerizing lips.

"Chloe, you can run but you can’t hide!"
