A Collision of Worlds

Elodie’s POV

Wild, reckless thoughts had been clawing at the edges of my mind ever since Kiernan walked into the classroom. The way he moved possessed a dangerous, magnetic pull. He held the room captive without even trying, shifting the very air around him. But he was definitely not mine to think about. I shoved the ridiculous images away, locking them down tight in my brain. He was not just some guy. He was the Alpha’s son, and more importantly, he was my new stepbrother.

I kept that crucial detail hidden from Nyara. She could keep her massive, starry-eyed crush. I silently vowed to stay as far away from him as humanly possible to avoid any unnecessary drama in this strange new place.

Our strict teacher marched in, her sharp heels clicking against the linoleum floor. She cut the room's chatter into dead silence with a single glare. Her severe eyes scanned the rows of desks before locking onto me like a heat-seeking missile.

“New student,” she demanded, her voice echoing off the walls. “Stand up. Introduce yourself to the class.”

I swallowed hard, pushing against my desk to get to my feet. My legs felt shaky, barely supporting my weight. I gripped the edge of the wood to steady myself. “Um, hi. I’m Elodie. I just transferred here yesterday.”

Silence hung heavy in the air for a split second. Then, a cruel voice from the front row whispered, “Metal mouth.”

Mocking laughter rippled across the room, fast and sharp.

Humiliation hit me like a physical blow. My cheeks burned hot, the heat spreading rapidly down my neck. Instinctively, desperate for a lifeline, I darted my eyes toward Kiernan. I wanted a single hint of recognition. A nod. A flicker of support from my new housemate. Just something to show these people that I wasn't alone.

Instead, his gaze remained flat, cold, and blank. He treated me like a ghost. He looked straight through me, his jaw set, his expression carved from unyielding stone.

I gritted my teeth and sank back into my chair, my heart pounding a furious rhythm against my ribs. Fine. Two could play at that game. If he wanted to pretend I did not exist, I would gladly return the favor.

The rest of the class blurred by in a painful haze of embarrassment and annoyance. The only relief came from Nyara. She started sliding silly, folded notes onto my desk when the teacher wasn't looking. We spent the remainder of the period mocking the woman, who was blatantly blushing in Kiernan's direction every time she turned around from the chalkboard. A grown woman turning pink and giggling over my stepbrother. It was beyond sickening.

When the bell finally rang, I grabbed my bag and escaped straight to the privacy of the restroom. The bright fluorescent lights buzzed obnoxiously overhead as I turned on the sink. I splashed cold water onto my burning face, letting the chill shock my system and wash away the tension. Staring at my pale reflection in the mirror, a crushing wave of homesickness hit my chest. I missed my old friends. I missed the quiet, boring hallways of my old school where nobody cared who I was and I blended into the background. Here, I was just a walking joke.

I dried my face with a rough paper towel, took a deep breath, and tugged nervously at the hem of my skirt to smooth out the wrinkles. I needed to hold my head up.

I stepped back out into the hallway and slammed straight into a hard, solid chest.

The impact knocked the breath right out of my lungs. I stumbled back, looking up to see who I hit. I froze.

It was Kiernan.

My breath caught in my throat. Panic flared in my chest, but I scrambled desperately to feign some sort of composure. I refused to let him see how much he intimidated me.

“Hi—uh—I'm sorry,” I stammered, trying to find a steady voice. “I’m Elodie. I know we haven't officially met yet, but I am your new step—”

“Get out of my way.”

His voice sliced through mine, cold and sharp as a razor blade. He did not blink. He brushed past me without a single second glance, his broad shoulder knocking hard into mine. The deliberate impact sent me stumbling a step to the side, my boots scraping against the tiles. He walked away like I was nothing but air, leaving a trail of icy hostility in his wake.

Humiliation burned hot in my cheeks all over again, ten times worse than in the classroom. My hands balled into tight fists at my sides. I stared at his retreating back, solidifying my promise right then and there. I would have nothing to do with him for the rest of my miserable existence.

After school, Nyara refused to take no for an answer. She linked her arm firmly through mine and dragged me straight to the ice rink to watch hockey practice.

“You have to see him play,” she insisted, pulling me through the heavy double doors.

Due to strict doctor's orders, I could not skate or exert myself anyway. So, I sat bundled in heavy layers on the cold metal bleachers. The chill seeped through my jacket, raising goosebumps on my arms, but Nyara did not seem to notice the freezing temperature. She narrated the team dynamics, pointing out various players, explaining their positions, and gossiping about their locker room habits.

Her upbeat tone shifted abruptly when a group of girls in tight, sparkling uniforms walked by. Nyara glared daggers at a blonde girl laughing loudly near the glass barrier.

“That’s Vespera,” Nyara muttered, crossing her arms. “Bossy head cheerleader. She thinks she owns the place and everyone in it.”

Before I could ask anything else, the locker room doors swung open. Kiernan stepped onto the ice.

The atmosphere of the rink shifted in a heartbeat. The scattered chatter in the stands died down, replaced by loud cheers and focused attention. He commanded the massive space effortlessly. He moved with precise, fluid power, his skates carving into the ice with aggressive grace. The way he handled the stick, controlling the puck with absolute dominance, was mesmerizing. Every shot he took hit the net with a deafening crack.

Nyara clutched my sleeve, bouncing on her toes and breathlessly declaring him perfect. I rolled my eyes and scoffed, but as I watched his raw talent unfold on the ice, I could not deny her words. He was built for this sport, a natural predator reigning over his frozen territory.

When practice finally ended, the players gathered near the benches, peeling off their helmets. Vespera strutted confidently across the ice, her boots clicking against the hard surface. She marched right up to Kiernan, wrapped her arms tightly around his sweaty neck, and kissed him passionately in front of everyone.

Nyara turned green with jealousy, groaning in sheer disgust as she shielded her eyes.

I watched the scene unfold with a deep, boiling wave of irritation. The constant, sickening worship surrounding my stepbrother annoyed me to my core. He soaked up the attention like a king holding court, letting Vespera hang off him like a trophy. I could not stand looking at him for another second.

We left the loud rink and stepped out into the freezing parking lot. The afternoon wind bit harshly at my cheeks.

“I’ll call you later!” Nyara waved cheerfully, slipping into the back seat of her family's luxurious gray Mercedes.

I waved back, shivering in the cold, biting wind. I pulled my jacket tighter around my shoulders and scanned the crowded lot for my own white car. I checked the usual parking space, expecting to see my driver waiting to take me away from this nightmare of a school.

The spot was empty.

I frowned, looking up and down the rows of departing vehicles. Nothing. Confused and freezing, I dug my phone out of my bag with stiff fingers. The screen lit up with a new text message from my mother.

I opened it, my eyes scanning the words quickly.

*“Sweetheart, the driver had to run an important errand. Ride with Kiernan. He’ll drop you home.”*

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit.

Ride with Kiernan?

The text glared back at me, sealing my fate. I stared at the glowing screen in sheer horror, the reality of the situation sinking in. I was trapped in a forced car ride with my openly hostile stepbrother. This was the absolute last thing I needed.
