The Commander of the Ice

Elodie’s POV

Morning arrives far too quickly, the bright sunlight slicing through the massive glass windows of my new bedroom. I groan, squinting against the harsh glare that highlights the unfamiliar walls. I rub the sleep from my eyes, trying to clear my foggy head, when the heavy oak door pushes open.

My mother stands in the doorway. I blink groggily at her, expecting the same exhausted woman who left my room hours ago. Instead, she glows. She wears a radiant, uncharacteristic smile that stretches wide across her face, lighting up her features in a way I haven't witnessed since before my father died. The deep shadows under her eyes are gone, replaced by a vibrant flush that makes her look years younger.

"You’ll be starting school today," she announces, her voice bubbling with an unfamiliar excitement. She steps into the room, practically floating on air. "The Alpha already sorted the paperwork. You’ll be in the exact same school as his son."

My stomach instantly drops at the mention of my new stepbrother. A fresh wave of dread washes over me. A new school is bad enough, but having to navigate it alongside the golden child of this estate sounds like a nightmare. Still, my mother's sheer, unadulterated joy is undeniable, making it impossible for me to snap at her.

She steps closer to my bed, her cheeks flushing a deep pink. She tucks a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "I had a wonderful night, Elodie. Garrick officially marked me."

I gag dramatically, throwing my head back against the pillows. "Ew! Mom, please. That is gross. I really do not need the raw details of your honeymoon phase."

Despite my dramatic protest, a genuine laugh tumbles out of me. It slips past my lips before I can stop it, echoing in the large room. It is my very first laugh since we arrived at this intimidating mansion. I watch her smile widen at the sound of it. Seeing her look truly happy after a year of agonizing grief finally cracks the thick defenses I spent all night building.

I let out a long sigh, tossing the blankets aside, and pull her into a tight hug. She smells like warm vanilla and expensive perfume. "Okay," I murmur into her shoulder. "I will give Garrick a fair chance. I will do it for your sake. But let’s get one thing straight. He is only your husband. He will never be my dad."

She squeezes me tighter, accepting the boundary. "That is all I ask, sweetheart."

Twenty minutes later, I trudge downstairs, dressed in my standard jeans and an oversized sweater. I walk into the sprawling dining room. The breakfast spread looks like a catering event for a royal court. Silver platters of fresh fruit, warm flaky pastries, and steaming eggs line the long mahogany table. Alpha Garrick sits at the head of it all, occupying the space like a king on his throne. He exudes a commanding, silent power that makes the massive room feel small.

I pause, remembering the promise I just made upstairs. I force myself to look him in the eye and manage a genuine, albeit quiet, greeting. "Morning."

Garrick pauses, a flicker of surprise crossing his stoic features, before he gives me a single, respectful nod. He doesn't push for more conversation.

Breakfast passes quickly. Soon after, I am whisked away from the sprawling estate. I don't get to take a normal yellow bus. Instead, I am escorted into my very own sleek white car, complete with a professional chauffeur holding the door open for me. I sink into the plush leather seats, watching the iron gates of the mansion fade into the distance. This does not feel like my life.

The car pulls up to a sprawling campus that stops my breath in my throat. This place looks more like an elite private college than a normal high school. Grand stone buildings with ivy crawling up the sides tower over perfectly manicured lawns. A massive stone fountain bubbles in the center of the courtyard. Expensive sports cars fill the student parking lot.

I step out of the white car, clutching my worn backpack strap so hard my knuckles turn white. The sheer wealth of the place is suffocating. The students lounging on the steps and chatting on the walkways are all clad in designer gear. Pristine uniforms, expensive shoes, and tailored jackets flash everywhere I look.

The moment my sneakers hit the pavement, heads turn. The elite crowd instantly pins me with judgmental, critical stares. Their eyes rake over my oversized clothes, moving upward to scrutinize my face. Harsh whispers erupt, slicing through the morning air.

"Who is that?"

"Look at those glasses."

"Are those metallic braces? Yikes."

The mockery is sharp and immediate. I keep my head down, forcing my feet to move forward across the stone pathway. I attempt to ignore the familiar background noise of bullies. I focus on the gray pavement, counting my steps, determined to make it inside the main building without causing a scene.

"Hey! Hold up!"

I freeze. My shoulders tense, bracing for the inevitable insult. A girl steps directly in front of my path, blocking my escape route. She has short, bouncy curly hair and wears the school uniform with an effortless flair. I narrow my eyes, waiting for the punchline, but instead of mocking me, she flashes a warm, dazzling smile.

"I love your freckles," she says, her voice bright and sincere. "They make you look unique."

I stare at her, thrown off balance. My throat tightens. "Are you sure? Most people usually just laugh at them. They call them dirt stains."

The girl frowns, a fierce spark lighting up her dark eyes. "Well, those people are stupid." Without a second of hesitation, she unzips her expensive leather bag and pulls out a black liquid eyeliner marker. She pops the cap off, turns to her reflection in her phone screen, and dots faux freckles across the bridge of her own nose and cheeks.

She caps the marker and grins at me. "There. Now we are freckle twins."

I blink, staring at the little black dots on her flawless skin. The gesture is so bizarre, so genuine, that I let out a real, unguarded laugh right there in the middle of the hostile courtyard. The heavy knot of anxiety in my chest loosens.

"I'm Elodie," I say, a shy smile breaking across my face.

"Nyara," she replies, looping her arm comfortably through mine. "Come on, Elodie. Let me see your schedule."

I hand her the crisp piece of paper. Nyara scans it, her smile widening. "Perfect. We have first period together. Let’s go."

We navigate the crowded, polished hallways together. Having Nyara by my side acts as a shield against the lingering glares. We reach our shared class and step through the doorway.

The moment we cross the threshold, a tall blonde girl sitting near the front row scoffs loudly. "You look like you belong in a thrift store. You definitely do not fit in here."

A few kids chuckle. The burning heat in my cheeks threatens to consume me. I want to shrink into the floorboards, to hide my faded sweater and scuffed shoes.

But before I can take a step back, Nyara steps up. She plants herself firmly between me and the blonde girl, her posture defensive and rigid.

"At least she’s not ugly on the inside, Chloe," Nyara snaps loudly. The fierce, biting tone of her voice echoes off the walls. "Money can buy your clothes, but it clearly can't fix your trash personality."

A collective gasp ripples through the room. Chloe’s mouth drops open in sheer shock, her face flushing angry red. Before she can fire back, Nyara grabs my wrist and drags me safely past the gaping students, pulling me all the way to the back row.

We drop into two empty seats in the corner. My heart races, but a strange sense of gratitude washes over me. No one has ever stood up for me like that before.

Nyara leans over her desk, lowering her voice as she begins whispering the complex social rules of the school. She points out who to avoid, which teachers are strict, and how the social hierarchy operates. I listen closely, absorbing the information, feeling a tentative spark of hope that I might actually survive this place.

Just as Nyara starts explaining the cafeteria seating arrangements, the heavy classroom door swings open.

The entire energy of the room shifts instantly. It happens so fast it feels like the air pressure drops. All conversations halt in the middle of sentences. The scattered laughter dies out. Girls sit up straighter, fixing their hair and biting their lips nervously. The boys straighten up in their seats, their relaxed postures replaced by a sudden, rigid respect.

I watch the doorway, my breath catching as a tall, broad-shouldered guy walks in. He possesses a commanding, natural authority that fills the space immediately. He moves with an effortless grace, a predatory prowl that seems to bend the very room around him. His dark eyes sweep over the room with cool indifference.

I lean in, keeping my voice barely above a breath. "Who is he?"

Nyara’s defensive, fierce demeanor melts away. Her smile widens knowingly, and she sighs dreamily, her eyes practically turning into heart shapes.

"That," Nyara whispers, "is Kiernan Vance. He is the commander of the hockey team. He is the hottest guy in this school." She pauses, her voice dropping into an awed hush. "And he is the Alpha’s son."

The words punch the air right out of my lungs.

My heart slams against my ribs. The loud thumping echoes in my ears, drowning out the background noise of the classroom. I stare at the boy as he claims a seat a few rows ahead of us, his broad back facing me.

The Alpha's son.

The shocking realization hits me like a physical blow, freezing the blood in my veins. This perfect, magnetic boy who holds the entire room captive with just a glance... is my new stepbrother. I remain glued to my chair, staring at Kiernan Vance, paralyzed by the realization of his identity and his proximity to my life.
