Lord Flamecleaver

"L-Lord... er..." Manager Vossak fumbled. The man's usual aristocratic poise shattered into jagged, irreparable pieces under the crushing weight of the newcomer’s presence. Vossak’s hands trembled where they hovered over his pristine white robes, his throat working as he struggled to address the intimidating, lethal figure who had just frozen the entire claiming house.

"Flamecleaver," the man supplied. He stepped further into the flickering lantern light, not bothering to spare the trembling manager a single glance. His voice resonated through the high stone ceilings, striking the walls like a physical blow. The tone was exactly as deep, resonant, and unapologetically masculine as Venyra had instantly imagined it would be when he first crossed the threshold.

His piercing, brilliant amber gaze swept over the five women lined up against the cold wall. They were arranged like mere chattel, objects polished and presented for the highest bidder. Venyra felt a sudden, burning flush of shame heat her cheeks. To be displayed this way, treated as nothing more than an item for purchase, stung her pride more than ever before. He felt far more lethal than Lord Draevon, radiating a raw, predatory danger that made her pulse thunder in her ears. She had no reason to impress this man, yet her skin prickled under his scrutiny.

Then, those glowing amber eyes locked onto hers once again. The physical boundaries of the grand hall seemed to fall away, melting into the shadows. She experienced the uncanny, terrifying sensation that he was peeling back her flesh, bypassing bone and muscle, and peering straight into the darkest depths of her soul. The intensity pinned her in place. Her breath hitched in her throat, her lungs refusing to work. Unable to withstand the crushing weight of his stare, she broke the intense contact first. She dropped her gaze to the polished stone floor, sucking in a desperate, shaky breath to steady her racing heart.

Vossak swallowed hard, trying to regain his footing. His voice cracked as he desperately tried to restore the normal flow of commerce in his claiming house. "Lord Flamecleaver, we have never had the pleasure of doing business with one of your... what is your preference, great lord?"

Silence stretched through the room, agonizing and heavy. The wealthy nobles dared not speak, their earlier arrogance evaporating under the warrior's oppressive aura. They stood like statues, terrified to draw his attention. The quiet stretched Flamecleaver's patience until it audibly snapped.

"I said that one! Do you hear me?" his voice boomed, echoing off the high stone ceilings and rattling the iron fixtures along the walls.

Venyra’s head jerked up in sheer shock. He held a gloved finger out, pointing directly, unequivocally at her. Down the line of terrified women, Lord Draevon stood frozen. He had been forcefully gripping a weeping blond girl's chin, tilting her face up for a brutal inspection.

"Lord Flamecleaver," Draevon protested, his tone laced with aristocratic entitlement. "We have been waiting for them to mature for three years. You cannot just cut in line."

Despite his bold words, Draevon kept his gaze fixed firmly on the warrior's chest, lacking the courage to meet the man's face.

Flamecleaver slowly turned his head. He delivered a single, deliberate glare. Those glowing amber eyes narrowed, emanating a silent, predatory threat that was enough to instantly silence both Draevon and the lazy Lord Borelas standing nearby. Draevon paled to the color of ash. His thin lips trembled in genuine fear. Taking a physical step back, he dropped his hand from the blond girl's chin as if burned by a hot iron. The gesture was choppy, his handsome features twisting into a cowardly frown. He did not react further, only stood there glaring at the floor.

Watching this incredible exchange of power, Venyra felt her usual, simmering irritation rise. The passive weeping of the other girls grated on her nerves. She yearned fiercely for freedom, to never suffer an unwanted touch again. She hated this charade, hated the gilded cage she was forced to endure.

Yet, betraying her own rebellious defiance, her eyes drifted back to Flamecleaver. Her gaze lingered on his broad, heavily muscled shoulders and the trim, weapon-lined waist of his black combat gear. A deep, warm pull of intense longing twisted sharply in her lower abdomen. The heat pooled low between her thighs, flushing her cheeks a deeper crimson. She pressed her thighs together, praying to the six gods that her physical reaction remained hidden from the room. Her body was a traitor, responding to the raw dominance he exuded.

Sweating profusely, Vossak tried to regain a semblance of order. He wrung his hands, his knuckles turning white against his robes. "My Lord Flamecleaver, that is not how this claiming house works. We first require a deposit, and they take three years to mature..."

Flamecleaver cut him off without a shred of hesitation. "I offer three-hundred platinum quarry."

The grand chamber fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Not even the rustle of silk disturbed the quiet. The night winds seemed to give this dangerous warrior a wide berth.

Venyra’s mind reeled dangerously. Three-hundred platinum quarry. It was a staggering, incomprehensible fortune. She had never even seen a hundred quarry in one place, which was her expected purchase price for a lord. This amount was more than three times her worth. It was enough wealth to buy a small city.

Vossak rubbed the cuff of his pristine white robes. His hands shook as he stammered pathetic excuses. "That is more than three times what she is worth, my Lord. Protocol dictates a waiting period—"

Flamecleaver’s shadowed, sharp jaw twitched with irritation. The fine stubble along his jawline caught the torchlight, and Venyra found herself wondering if it would feel rough like sand-cat grit against her skin. Would defiance discourage him? If he sought a submissive bed-mate, he would do better choosing one of the weeping girls. But since his initial, piercing assessment, his gaze never returned to her, remaining fixed on the trembling manager.

"You and I both know I am entitled to anything in here," Flamecleaver demanded. His voice dropped into a low, terrifying register as his patience exhausted. "Instead, I offer you more than fair compensation for one. And if you wish to let the entire Ember Guard in, I suggest you release her to me... now."

The blatant threat of military force drained the last drop of color from Vossak's face. The manager raised a trembling, sweaty hand and ran his fingers through his perfectly styled gray hair. The frantic gesture ruined his pristine appearance, pulling the hair loose from the strict bind at his nape and leaving well-greased strands sticking out at odd angles.

Venyra stood paralyzed. Her fate hung frozen in the terrifying balance. She could not fight the Ember Guard. She could not run from a man who commanded them. All her plans to escape, all her quiet defiance, were lost in the face of this overwhelming force.

Finally, Vossak let out a shaky breath. His shoulders slumped in utter defeat. He gave a tight, strained nod, his lips pressed in a thin line of profound disappointment.

"Your request is granted, Lord Flamecleaver," the manager sighed, sounding thoroughly broken. He turned his defeated gaze toward the line of women. "Go and gather your clothes, Venyra."

Venyra swallowed the lump in her throat and shifted her weight, preparing to pivot toward the dressing chambers to pack her meager belongings.

Before she could take a single step, Flamecleaver’s deep voice stopped her.

"Don’t bother," Flamecleaver interrupted.

A sudden, dark amused gleam lit his amber gaze as he finally looked back at her. The heat in his eyes sent a new shiver racing down her spine.

"She won’t be needing them."
