Claiming Day
The air inside the claiming house was thick, saturated with the suffocating perfume of desperate women and the cloying scent of burning incense. Venyra stood in the small preparation chamber, her fingers tracing the edge of her dress. The silk was a deep, blood-red shade, designed to draw every eye in the room. It was cut low to leave her shoulders bare, clinging tightly to her waist and hips before spilling down in waves of crimson fabric lined with black lace. The garment left little to the imagination, accentuating her olive skin and the dark, thick waves of her hair.
Today was claiming day, the culmination of three years of rigid obedience and physical training. Venyra and the four other women in her section stood lined up like exquisite porcelain dolls, waiting to be paraded before the wealthiest men in the city. The other girls chatted with nervous excitement, glad to be finished with the relentless daily grooming. They looked forward to their training being put to use, foolishly believing that a life of service to a wealthy noble would be a comfortable escape.
Venyra, however, harbored a secret, desperate plan. She had no intention of submitting to a lifetime of servitude. Her plan was simple: entice a weak, wealthy, and slow-minded noble. She needed a buyer whose vanity exceeded his intelligence—someone who would view her as a trophy to flaunt rather than a person to guard. Once she convinced such a man to purchase her and take her out of the heavily secured claiming house, she would exploit his loose security. She would slip away into the dark, crowded alleys of the city's underbelly, disappearing forever into the freedom she had craved for three long years.
The heavy wooden doors at the end of the hall groaned open, letting in a sudden, bright rush of light from the main courtyard. Venyra blinked, adjusting to the brightness. The rules of the house required her to keep her chin tucked and her eyes cast down toward the polished stone floor, but she ignored the restriction. Peeking through her long, dark lashes, she covertly watched the prospective buyers file into the grand entrance hall.
The room was decorated to evoke a sense of decadent luxury, filled with silk drapes, soft cushions, and dim nooks designed for private negotiations. The men who entered looked like typical nobility. The first three were soft, middle-aged lords who carried themselves with the easy posture of men who had never known physical labor. Behind them came a younger lord, standing tall and straight, a smug, arrogant smirk plastered on his thin lips. He looked over the line of women with a hungry, speculative gleam in his dark eyes. Venyra noted his vanity; he might be easy to manipulate.
Then, Vossak, the pale, gray-haired head manager, stepped forward to greet them. "Greetings, lords," Vossak said, his voice smooth and welcoming. He was a thin, severe man, carrying himself with a quiet authority that came from years of running the claiming house. "We are honored to present our finest selection today. Every girl has been trained to a strict standard, prepared to meet your exact desires."
Before Vossak could finish his rehearsed speech, a broad, imposing man strode to the front of the group. Unlike the soft nobles, this man possessed a solid, powerful build. His light blond hair was oiled and brushed back, silvering at the temples. His sharp, calculating gray eyes scanned the chamber, dissecting every detail. This was Lord Draevon.
"Three years is a long time to wait for my investment, Vossak," Draevon said, his voice laced with cold authority.
Vossak bowed, his hands fluttering with quick, nervous gestures. "Three years to ensure perfection, my lord. Our training is unmatched."
Venyra looked away, suppressing a shudder of revulsion. Draevon’s posture and the tense stance of his personal guards made it clear that he was a man who demanded uncompromising control. Escaping a master like him would be nearly impossible, and likely fatal if she failed. She needed a softer target.
Her eyes shifted to Lord Borelas, a heavy, lazy-looking noble standing near the back. His jowls shook slightly as he laughed at a comment from his companion. Borelas wore expensive, flowing robes that barely concealed his large belly. He looked indolent, a man who preferred sleep and feasting over discipline. If she could convince him to buy her, escaping would be easy. He would never have the energy to hunt her down in the slums.
Her hopes were cut short by the sound of heavy, deliberate footsteps stopping right in front of her. The polished leather boots belonged to Lord Draevon.
"Face up, girl," he commanded. His voice was sharp, cutting through the low murmur of the room.
Venyra kept her eyes down for a fraction of a second, letting a deliberate hesitation show before she slowly lifted her chin to look at him. It was a subtle act of defiance, a quiet test to see how he would react.
The small rebellion did not push him away. Instead, a muscle twitched in his jaw, and a dark curiosity flared in his gray eyes. Draevon began to circle her, his steps slow and predatory, like a wolf sizing up a cornered doe. His gaze roamed over her exposed shoulders, down the tight red silk of her bodice, and over her hips. Venyra felt a cold wave of anxiety wash over her. It felt as though his eyes were physically stripping her bare, leaving her exposed to his invasive scrutiny.
He stopped directly in front of her again, his lips curling into a demanding sneer. "Show me your breasts."
A freezing, hollow dread settled in Venyra's chest. Her heart beat wildly against her ribs. The rules of the claiming house were unyielding, and the punishment for disobedience was severe. If she refused, she would be dragged to the cells, her chance at escape ruined before it even began.
With trembling fingers, she reached for the edge of her red silk bodice. Her knuckles brushed against her skin as she prepared to pull the fabric down, forcing herself to maintain a blank, obedient expression despite the humiliation burning in her throat.
Just as her fingers gripped the silk, Vossak stepped smoothly out of the shadows of the pillars, placing himself between Draevon and Venyra. He bowed, his posture apologetic but firm.
"My lord," Vossak intervened, his tone respectful. "While we guarantee the physical perfection of every girl in this house, our rules state that such displays are not permitted until the transaction is completed in full."
Draevon clicked his tongue, his jaw tightening in annoyance. He stared at Venyra's chest for one long, silent moment before letting out a rough grunt and moving down the line to the next girl.
Venyra let her hands fall to her sides, her breath escaping in a quiet, shaky sigh. The relief was dizzying, making her knees feel weak beneath the weight of her dress. She resolved not to show any more defiance to Draevon; playing with a predator was too dangerous.
Vossak cleared his throat, quickly trying to restore the smooth flow of the presentation. He turned back to the assembled buyers, raising his hands. "Now, gentlemen, the girls will be happy to demonstrate their skills—"
The manager's voice abruptly choked off.
Venyra looked up, startled by the sudden silence. In her three years of training, she had never seen Vossak lose his composure. Now, the pale manager stood frozen, the color draining from his face as his eyes widened in surprise.
A man unlike any noble in the room stepped through the grand entrance.
He did not possess the arrogant, pompous swagger of the lords. He walked with a quiet, lethal authority that commanded the entire room. His body was broad and heavily muscled, far larger than any of the wealthy men present. He wore a fitted suit of dark black combat gear, designed for utility and movement rather than show. Silver-hilted blades were strapped to his chest and thighs, their polished metal catching the light of the torches.
Every movement he made was graceful, carrying the silent, predatory warning of an apex predator.
The stranger stopped near the center of the hall, his dark brows drawing together as his gaze swept over the room. Venyra stared, her breath catching in her throat. From across the hall, she could see his eyes—they were a striking, brilliant amber, glowing with a strange, intense heat that seemed unnatural and inhuman.
As those amber eyes scanned the line of women, they locked onto hers.
The connection was instant and heavy. Venyra felt a sudden, crushing weight of attention settle over her, making the air in her lungs vanish. The whole hall fell into a deathly, suffocating silence. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed.
The warrior lifted a broad hand, his finger pointing directly at her.
"That one," his deep voice rumbled, shattering the silence of the room.
