The Egg Stoning

Maeve froze at the bottom of the steps, her fingers digging into her palms. The nasty surprise blocking her path was none other than Vanya. The beautiful, spiteful she-wolf stood at the center of the walkway, flanked by her usual cruel entourage. There were no less than twenty of them fanned out across the manicured lawn.

"Beta's mate!" Vanya sneered, her voice dripping with venomous mockery. "How romantic."

Maeve stiffened. The fresh, agonizing truth of the rejection still burned like battery acid in her chest. Vanya already knew. Of course she did. Declan had likely run straight into her arms. But knowing wasn't enough for Vanya; she needed a spectacle.

Every single girl in the mocking crowd held a raw white egg in their hands. Some held cartons.

A cold wave of dread washed over Maeve. Her eyes watered as the horrifying realization set in. She knew exactly what this was. As an Omega, she possessed no voice, no right to defend herself. But this specific punishment was ancient and deeply cruel. An egg-stoning was traditionally reserved strictly for she-wolves convicted of severe crimes, like adultery or theft. It was designed to completely break an offender's spirit, leaving a vile stench that lingered for days. Anyone who saw or smelled the victim would instantly know they were branded a criminal. Most Omegas who endured this repulsive display either fled the territory in shame or took their own lives.

"Shameless Maeve!" the girls chorused, their voices ringing with manufactured outrage.

Vanya stepped closer, her heels clicking against the pavement. "Did you really think Beta Declan would break up with me to date you?" She threw her head back and laughed, a shrill, grating sound. "You shouldn't have even been born, Maeve. The moon goddess knew exactly how useless you were, which is why she cursed you with a shameful birth. After today, you will learn your place and never come near my future husband again."

Maeve kept her head lowered. She knew the brutal hierarchy of the pack. Fighting back would only invite a beating from the guards. Trembling, she clutched her small bag tighter and tried to step around the blockade.

Vanya’s hand shot out, her manicured nails digging painfully into Maeve's arm. "Where do you think you're going?" Vanya snarled, dropping the angelic facade. "We are not done with you."

Vanya flicked her wrist, signaling the group.

The first egg struck Maeve squarely in the forehead. The shell cracked with a sharp snap, sending cold, slimy yolk running down into her eyes. Before she could even gasp, the barrage began.

Over a hundred raw eggs rained down on her from every direction. The impacts were surprisingly violent, the hard shells bruising her arms, her shoulders, the side of her face. Maeve dropped to her knees, curling into a tight ball, desperately trying to shield her head with her arms.

The sensory assault was suffocating. Egg whites and thick yolks plastered her hair to her skull, soaking through her thin clothes and chilling her to the bone. Then came the stench. Some of the eggs were rotten, bursting against her skin in clouds of sulfur and decay. The repulsive slime coated her nose and mouth. She pressed her lips tightly together, terrified she might swallow the putrid mess.

Trapped and defenseless, Maeve endured the agonizing physical blows. She wept in absolute silence, her tears mixing with the vile yellow slime. The girls showed no mercy, laughing and cheering with every direct hit, heartlessly turning the packhouse entrance into a stage of torture.

"What the hell is going on here?"

The furious, earth-shaking roar tore through the air, vibrating the very ground beneath their feet. It was Alpha Vaughn.

The laughter died instantly. In the blink of an eye, the crowd of girls scattered like frightened rabbits, dropping their remaining cartons and fleeing toward the tree line. Vanya hesitated for a fraction of a second before lifting her designer dress and running off with the rest of them.

Alpha Vaughn stood frozen at the top of the packhouse steps, his chest heaving. His anger boiled hot in his veins at the fleeing attackers, but the moment his eyes landed on the pathetic, curled-up figure at the bottom of the stairs, his heart plummeted.

Guilt crashed over the Alpha like a physical blow. He witnessed the horrific aftermath of the abuse taking place right on his front lawn, a blatant violation of pack law. He took a heavy step down, his hand outstretched. "Maeve..."

But the sound of his voice only spiked her terror. Thoroughly broken and stripped of her last shred of dignity, Maeve scrambled backward. She couldn't bear to look the Alpha in the eye. Blinded by tears and rotten slime, she took to her heels.

Her shoes found no traction on the slick, egg-covered pavement. She slipped, her knees crashing hard against the concrete and crushing more shells beneath her weight. She dragged herself up, gasping for air, and bolted. She slipped again, falling into the foul-smelling puddles, but she refused to stay down. Ignoring the distant, cruel laughter of a few lingering pack members who watched from the borders, Maeve kept picking herself up and running until she vanished from sight behind the lower cabins.

Vaughn remained rooted to the spot, a sickening mixture of shock and remorse gripping his throat. He stared at the yellow-stained concrete for five long minutes, struggling to process the sheer cruelty that had just transpired under his roof.

The heavy oak doors creaked open behind him. Beta Declan stepped outside. He surveyed the mess, his expression entirely unfazed and dangerously apathetic. He didn't spare a single ounce of pity for his destined mate's brutal suffering.

"Dad, let's go inside," Declan said smoothly, casually checking his watch. "I'll get some Omegas out here to clean up this garbage."

Vaughn turned slowly, his eyes burning with a dark, primal fury. He didn't say a word as he marched past his son and headed straight for his private office on the ground floor. Declan followed, unbothered by the heavy silence.

The moment the office door clicked shut, Vaughn spun around. "Make sure you punish those girls for what they just did to Maeve," he commanded sternly, his Alpha aura flaring. "Especially Vanya."

Declan leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his chest. He flatly and ruthlessly refused. "I'm sorry, but no. Maeve is just an Omega. She is nothing."

Vaughn’s jaw tightened. "She is a member of this pack."

"She is the bottom of the barrel," Declan shot back, his tone hardening. "Besides, I love Vanya. I want to marry her."

Crash!

Pushed to the absolute brink of rage, Alpha Vaughn lashed out, his heavy combat boot connecting with the glass center table. The thick glass shattered into hundreds of jagged pieces across the expensive rug.

Declan didn't even flinch. He casually mind-linked a few Omegas to come clean up the mess, his face an impenetrable mask.

"Vanya is ill-mannered and cruel," Vaughn growled, taking deep, ragged breaths to calm the beast scratching at his mind. He only tolerated the girl because it was his duty to protect everyone in the Frost Peak pack, but the thought of her leading them made his stomach turn. "I will never allow Vanya to become a Luna. Is she your mate?"

"Those things don't matter to me anymore," Declan responded lividly, stepping fully into the room. "The moon goddess doesn't get to decide my future. My destiny is in my own hands."

"I know Maeve is your true mate," Vaughn stated, his voice dropping to a dangerous rumble.

Declan paused, a flicker of surprise crossing his features before his expression smoothed out into arrogant indifference.

Vaughn paced behind his desk. He knew about the bond because the union had been pre-arranged in secret. Years ago, Maeve's father had made a monumental sacrifice, giving up his own life to secure the safety of the Frost Peak pack. In return, Vaughn swore an oath to protect the man's daughter and ensure she was bonded to the highest rank. Maeve's destiny was a sacred union tied directly to that blood debt. It was a burden Vaughn carried silently, praying fate would naturally take its course. Now, that delicate plan was unraveling.

"I already rejected her," Declan confessed carelessly, brushing a piece of lint off his shirt.

Vaughn stopped dead. A sharp, squeezing pain erupted in his chest, so intense he thought he was having a heart attack. He gripped the edge of the desk, his knuckles turning white. "You did what?"

"Why do you seem so surprised?" Declan rolled his eyes, explicitly defying the sacred laws of their kind. "How the hell are you or I supposed to introduce a floor-scrubber to the neighboring Alphas? What would the pack think? Vanya is much more suitable. She is beautiful, strong, and everyone loves her. She is the only one who deserves to be the rightful Luna."

Sweat beaded on Vaughn's forehead. He couldn't reveal the secret blood oath, or else the political fallout would ruin everything. But he couldn't stand by and watch his son destroy the pack's honor.

"If Vanya is the woman you choose over your destined mate," Vaughn warned seriously, his voice vibrating with authority, "then I will completely withhold the Alpha title from you."

Declan scoffed loudly. He pushed off the doorframe, stepping up to his father's desk with a chilling smirk. He weaponized the one painful sore spot Vaughn had left. "Like you have a choice. If you die, that title defaults to me regardless. Or do I need to remind you about your precious firstborn?"

Vaughn flinched at the mention of his estranged eldest son.

"Torin neglected his duties and abandoned his pack," Declan spat, disgust coating his tongue. "And for what? A weak human woman. He ran away."

"He did not run away," Vaughn defended fiercely, slamming his fist on the desk. "His mate was human and couldn't survive the brutal pack politics here. He loved her enough to sacrifice everything he knew to build a life with her. That is what I call strength. Torin possesses a profound respect for the mate bond. That is exactly what you lack."

Declan remained chillingly unmoved. "And that little romantic sacrifice leaves you with no choice but to make me Alpha. Look, the best I can offer is giving Maeve a break from her chores. I'll assign another Omega to scrub the floors. But she does not deserve an apology, and she certainly isn't getting one from Vanya."

An Omega for a mate? Declan would rather swallow glass.

Vaughn straightened his posture, glaring down at his Beta. "I don't want to see Vanya in this house again."

"I'm sorry, Dad," Declan replied swiftly, his gaze hardening into a threat. "But this packhouse is going to be her home. You are going to see her every single day. Don't forget that it's just you and me running things now. I stood by you when your beloved golden boy left. Don't be stubborn."

A heavy, suffocating helplessness settled over Vaughn. Elevating Vanya to Luna would spell inevitable doom for Frost Peak. Her cruelty would fracture the pack from the inside out. His gaze darkened. "Declan, I am warning you right now. You will regret this."

"No, Dad," Declan said flatly. "I have never regretted a single thing I've done in my life, and I am definitely never going to regret throwing away a useless Omega."

A tense week passed, hanging over the territory like a dark storm cloud. Maeve never returned to her duties at the packhouse.

Vaughn’s gnawing unease grew with each passing day. He knew she took her chores seriously, and her continued absence clawed at his conscience.

Standing near the training grounds one crisp morning, Vaughn finally made a decision. "I will go visit Maeve," he told Declan, adjusting his jacket. "She should have returned by now."

Declan, who was wiping sweat from his forehead with a towel, paused. His lip curled in disgust. "Oh, please. Don't disgrace me. How can an Alpha like you go sniffing around the Omega slums in search of a lowly scrub?"

"Watch your mouth, Declan, don't—"

A deafening, panicked wail cut Vaughn off. The border sirens blared to life, echoing off the mountains. It was the emergency signal for a deadly rogue attack.

Both father and son dropped their argument and broke into a dead sprint toward the front lines. The heavy scent of unfamiliar wolves and fresh blood hit the air. They rushed past the tree line, ready to shift and tear into the intruders, but they stopped dead in their tracks.

They were utterly stunned by the sight before them. The pack warriors were not struggling. They were already systematically subduing the lethal rogue threat, pinning the massive, feral wolves to the dirt. But the warriors weren't acting on their own. They were moving with precise, deadly coordination under the ruthless, commanding presence of a man standing in the center of the carnage.

A sleek, unfamiliar black SUV sat parked aggressively on the grass. And leaning against it, wiping rogue blood from his knuckles, was Torin.

Vaughn's estranged eldest son had returned. The lethal authority rolling off him was palpable, pressing down on the clearing and forcing the remaining rogues into submission.

As the last rogue was dragged away in chains, the pack erupted into joyous celebration. Warriors cheered, bowing their heads in deep respect as they parted ways for the eldest son.

Declan stood frozen, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. He glared at his older brother in grim, threatened silence.

Torin ignored the fanfare. He moved to the trunk of his SUV, casually pulling out a large piece of luggage. He shushed the pack members away politely when they rushed forward to help him. Turning around, his eyes locked onto his father's.

A genuine smile broke across Torin's face, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. He crossed the distance in a few long strides and pulled Vaughn into a fierce, tight embrace.

"Torin," Vaughn breathed, clapping his son on the back, overwhelmed by the sudden return. He quickly waved a hand, silently ordering the surrounding warriors to give them space.

But as Torin pulled back, Vaughn noticed the frantic, wild look in his son's eyes. Torin's chest was heaving, and he looked breathless, his mind frantically elsewhere.

"Dad, I mean no offense, and I'm happy to see you," Torin started, the words tumbling out of his mouth in a rush. "But on my drive up the mountain to the pack, I nearly struck a girl with my car."

Vaughn frowned, confused by the sudden shift in topic. "A girl?"

"Yes. A petite girl with blonde hair. She was hauling luggage down the side of the road," Torin explained urgently, running a hand through his hair. "She looked like she had been crying for hours. I slammed on the brakes and almost hit her. But when I got out of the car..."

Torin swallowed hard, his eyes wide with a massive, life-altering revelation.

"I realized she was my second-chance mate," Torin said, his voice dropping to a desperate rasp. "Before I could even speak to her, she scrambled into a passing taxi and fled."

Declan shifted uncomfortably in the background, but Torin didn't even look at him. He gripped his father's shoulders, his grip tight and demanding.

"Dad, please," Torin pleaded urgently. "Do you have any idea who she is?"
