The Brutal Rejection

Dust motes danced in the morning sunlight streaming through the massive bay windows of the Frost Peak packhouse. Maeve kept her head down, her rough hands moving a rag in steady, rhythmic circles over the armrest of a luxury leather sofa. Her shoulders burned from hours of scrubbing, but a bubbling, frantic energy masked her physical exhaustion.

*Our mate,* Mae, her inner wolf, hummed in the back of her mind. *He is near.*

Shifting at sixteen was a rarity across all packs. For a lowly Omega like Maeve, it was considered a miracle. Yesterday, she endured the bone-cracking agony of her first shift, tearing through her human skin to run on four paws. But the real shock happened moments later. The scent of pine and crisp winter air hit her senses, and her eyes locked onto Beta Declan.

He was her fated mate.

Declan was eighteen, tall, broad-shouldered, and possessed a striking face that made she-wolves swoon. He was the second son of Alpha Vaughn, the ruler of the Frost Peak Pack and the most powerful Alpha in North America. Rumors floated around the territory that Alpha Vaughn's firstborn son, Torin, neglected his pack duties and chose a life among humans. That choice left Declan to shoulder the weight of leadership. Declan had acted as the pack’s Beta since he was fifteen. Soon, he would take over the mantle of Alpha.

Maeve’s heart did a wild flip against her ribs. The moon goddess gave her the ultimate blessing. Declan possessed a reputation for kindness. He treated pack members with respect, regardless of their rank. Armed with this newfound hope, Maeve volunteered to take on extra cleaning chores around the packhouse. She told the other Omega she-wolves to take a rest, taking over their duties in the grand living room. She did it all for one reason: she desperately wanted Declan to recognize her. She wanted him to accept her.

Their encounter yesterday was brief. Before they could even exchange a single word, Declan’s girlfriend, Vanya, appeared out of nowhere and pulled him away. Today was Maeve’s chance to claim her mate.

She paused her scrubbing, recalling the deep, gentle voice of Alpha Vaughn from earlier that morning.

"Good morning, Maeve. Is your mother alright?" Alpha Vaughn had asked, a warm beam on his rugged face.

"Mom is well, Alpha. Thank you for asking," Maeve had replied, flashing a bright smile.

Alpha Vaughn simply smiled back and gave a small nod. He was a man of few words, carrying an imposing, powerful aura. Even though he neared his sixties, he maintained the sharp, handsome features of a forty-year-old warrior. Tragedy struck his life ten years ago when his Luna died from a rare heart condition, leaving him to raise his sons alone. Ever since Maeve’s father passed away, Alpha Vaughn showed her unexpected mercy. He reduced her daily chores, giving her small pockets of free time to train in secret behind her shack. Maeve held profound respect and honor for her Alpha.

She tossed the rag into her bucket and moved toward the hallway. The only room in the massive estate she was forbidden to clean was Declan’s bedroom. Declan handled his own quarters and only allowed Vanya inside. Maeve held onto the secret hope that her restricted access would change soon.

A sudden shift in the atmosphere broke her thoughts. The air grew heavy with anticipation.

*Click. Click. Click.*

The sharp, authoritative sound of dress shoes echoed against the hardwood floor.

*Our mate, our mate!* Mae screamed in her head, clawing at the edges of Maeve's consciousness. They only got acquainted yesterday, but the wolf’s instincts were blindingly strong. Pack law dictated that early bloomers who found their mates could not officially mate until they turned eighteen, but just knowing her destined partner brought a rush of euphoria.

Maeve stood in the center of the grand hallway. She wiped her sweaty palms on her faded jeans and lifted her head, a timid smile forming on her lips.

Declan rounded the corner. He wore a crisp, dark suit, looking every inch the future Alpha heading to an important meeting.

Maeve’s smile vanished. She froze.

She met his dark brown eyes, expecting to find the gentle warmth he showed the rest of the pack. Instead, she found a pitch-black void. The polite, protective boy she admired was gone. His eyes bore into her with raw, unfiltered disgust.

*Our mate doesn’t like us,* Mae whimpered in distress. The wolf tucked her tail and shrunk away into the dark corners of her mind.

Maeve wanted to run. She wanted to bolt through the servant doors and hide in the woods, but her feet felt like heavy lead blocks. She stood paralyzed, gawking awkwardly as the soles of Declan’s shoes clicked closer and closer.

He stopped a few feet away. His lip curled into a vicious sneer. He looked her up and down, taking in her oversized t-shirt and messy hair.

He scoffed. "Mate my foot. The moon goddess must be crazy."

A heavy, suffocating knot formed in Maeve’s throat. Hot tears breached her lash line and cascaded down her pale cheeks like rain. Declan always treated her nice. He even stepped in to protect her from bullies in the past. But the second he discovered she was his fated mate, his entire demeanor morphed into a nightmare.

"I’m sorry, Beta Declan…" Maeve forced out, her voice trembling.

"Shut up," he snapped. His voice cracked through the hallway like a whip. "You only talk when I give you the chance, do you understand?"

He glared at her, his gaze coated in pure loathing. A sharp ache bloomed in Maeve’s chest. Why would the moon goddess do this? Why pair her with a man who despised her very existence simply because of her pack rank? She had no control over her bloodline. She was born an Omega.

Maeve nodded her head helplessly, her tears falling faster.

Declan stepped forward. Maeve took a panicked step back. He advanced again. She retreated until her shoulder blades hit the cold, painted wall. He trapped her there. His cold, piercing gaze froze the blood in her veins. She feared the worst, bracing herself for a physical blow.

She never expected his words to inflict far more damage.

"I am the Beta and soon-to-be Alpha of the Frost Peak Pack," Declan spat, leaning his face closer to hers. "I cannot have an Omega as my mate, Maeve."

He stood tall, his jaw set in stone. "I, Beta Declan Vaughn, reject you, Maeve Vance, as my destined mate."

The moment the formal declaration left his lips, a guttural groan tore from his throat. His eyes darkened to a terrifying pitch black. Maeve watched his broad shoulders tense as the brutal agony of the severing bond hit him. He gritted his teeth, holding the pain in with sheer stubbornness.

The torment lasted mere seconds. Declan rolled his shoulders, let out a harsh breath, and returned to normal. Then, he tilted his head back and began to laugh. The hysterical, mocking sound bounced off the hallway walls, sending chills down Maeve’s spine.

"It’s your turn," he snarled, dropping his laughter in an instant. He leaned in so close she could feel the heat radiating off his chest. The proximity made her skin crawl. "Accept it, or do you want me to force you?"

Maeve bit her lower lip hard enough to taste copper. This monstrous side of him terrified her. He protected her before, but the cruelty he displayed today hurt far more than any beating she ever took. With her tears flowing like a broken fountain, she stared up at the boy who shattered her world.

"I, Maeve Vance," she whispered, her voice a shaky, broken rasp, "accept your rejection."

Instantly, an invisible force sucked every ounce of air from her lungs. She gasped, clawing at her own throat, but she could not breathe. A brutal, stabbing pain ripped straight through her heart, splitting her chest open from the inside out. Her knees buckled. She crashed onto the hardwood floor, landing hard on her side.

Unlike Declan, she lacked the strength to suppress the trauma. She writhed on the floor, gasping helplessly for breath, her fingers scratching against the wood.

Declan stood over her. He watched her agonizing struggle without a single trace of remorse or pity. His eyes simply glazed over her petite, trembling form on the floor.

"Babe, what are you doing?"

A soft, enchanting voice drifted down the corridor. Declan snapped his head up, peeling his gaze away from the woman on the floor. In a heartbeat, the cold ice melted from his eyes. A bright, warm smile spread across his handsome features.

"Vanya, it’s good you are here," Declan said, his tone dripping with affection.

Vanya stepped into view. She looked stunning. She wore towering high heels that matched her flawless model figure perfectly. Her bright blue eyes shone like a clear summer sky, and her smile carried an angelic beauty.

Declan gestured down at Maeve with a look of utter disdain. "The moon goddess played a prank on me, giving me this lowlife she-wolf as a mate."

Vanya’s blue eyes widened. Fake tears pooled in her lashes, making her look like a wounded doll. "You mean you are leaving me for her?" she asked with manufactured dismay, clutching a hand to her chest.

Declan reached out and rested both hands on her bare shoulders. He pulled her into a deep, comforting embrace. "No. I just rejected her," he said truthfully, pursing his lips.

Vanya’s fake fears dissipated in an instant. "You made me so happy," she sighed with relief. She threw her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly, pressing her body against his right in front of Maeve.

Maeve lay on the floor, a crying, pathetic mess, forced to watch the display. Vanya was only seventeen. She never shared an intimate night with Declan, but her constant clinginess pushed every other she-wolf away. Knowing Declan would soon take the Alpha title, Vanya already strutted around the territory announcing herself as the future Luna. The pack accepted it. Omegas belonged with Omegas. They were never meant to climb the social ladder.

"Let’s go," Vanya finally chimed, pulling away from the hug. From her designer dress and heels, they were clearly heading out on a date.

Vanya laced her fingers through Declan’s and led him away down the hall. Declan never looked back.

Maeve lay alone on the cold floor. The excruciating stabbing in her chest slowly receded, leaving behind a vast, suffocating emptiness. She dragged her trembling body off the floor, rising to her feet. Her tears dried tight against her cheeks. She grew too tired to wipe them away.

She had no friends in the pack. Omegas never associated with each other. They all lived in constant competition, praying to marry into a higher rank to escape their miserable lives. Maeve’s mother spent years training her in secret behind their rundown house, pushing her to be strong. Maeve’s lifelong dream was to find a strong mate, elevate her status, and pull her mother out of the dirt.

That dream died with the rejection.

Moving like a hollowed-out ghost, Maeve picked up her bucket and rags. She went back to the living room. She polished the tables. She swept the rugs. Somehow, she managed to finish her grueling packhouse chores in a numb, silent daze.

When her shift finally ended, she grabbed her small bag and walked down the main corridor. She pushed her weight against the heavy oak doors of the packhouse exit and stepped outside into the daylight.

She raised her head, and her blood ran cold. A nasty surprise waited for her right at the bottom of the steps.
