The Destroyed Memento
"Grandfather!" The cry tore through the suffocating tension in the room.
The terrified, frantic beeping of the cardiac monitors settled into a steady, normal rhythm. Alistair Sinclair’s chest rose and fell with smooth, unobstructed breaths, his eyes fluttering open to reveal a clear, alert gaze. Overwhelmed by a sudden rush of intense relief, Cecilia burst into loud, happy tears. She threw herself near the edge of her grandfather's bedside, clutching his frail hand as if refusing to let him slip away again.
Valeria stared at the glowing screens, her breath hitching in her throat. She recognized the sheer magnitude of the miracle she had just witnessed. Turning to Kaelen, she bowed deeply, bending at the waist. Her pristine, commanding posture melted into genuine reverence, her striking face flushed with immense respect.
"Mr. Vance," Valeria declared, her voice ringing loud and formal across the silent ward. "Words cannot capture the depth of my gratitude. From this moment onward, Kaelen Vance is recognized as the Sinclair family’s most honored guest. Whatever you need, you have our unwavering support."
Kaelen accepted the profound gratitude with a humble, nonchalant nod. He brushed off the monumental achievement as if bringing a man back from the brink of death were a mundane chore. "You are welcome, Ms. Sinclair. It was no trouble at all."
This casual attitude deeply irked Dr. Brenner. Sidelined and humiliated, the elite doctor pressed the ice pack harder against his throbbing cheek, glaring daggers at the young man.
"Hey, you!" Cecilia pointed a trembling finger at the airtight plastic container resting on the bedside table. Inside, the bizarre, massive black centipede ravenously feasted upon the deep-fried insects, its countless legs twitching as it gorged on the bait. "What is that thing? Why would a horrific centipede be inside my grandfather’s body?"
Kaelen’s expression turned deadly grave. He stepped closer to the bed, observing the grotesque creature. "This is not a normal insect," he explained with chilling calmness. "It is actually a sophisticated, dark venomous curse. Someone deliberately planted it inside the patriarch to siphon his life force."
Hearing this, Alistair's sunken eyes widened in shock. He gripped the white bedsheets, his mind racing through recent memories. "A curse? A few days ago, I attended an elite gathering in Ashbourne. I drank a specific, suspicious glass of wine handed to me by an acquaintance. I felt a sharp, brief pain in my throat after drinking it, but brushed it off."
Desperate to salvage his shattered reputation, Dr. Brenner forcefully interjected. He stepped out from the corner, attempting to dismiss the mystical diagnosis. "Do not listen to this unscientific garbage! Curses? Magic? Mr. Sinclair must have simply and accidentally ingested centipede eggs in his meal. The eggs hatched in his stomach. That is all!"
Kaelen locked eyes with the arrogant doctor and calmly delivered a scientific retort. "Human stomach acid would have easily digested mere insect eggs long before they could hatch. It is fine if you are ignorant of such matters, but do not spread false information to cover your own incompetence."
The simple logic dismantled the doctor's pathetic argument. Brenner opened his mouth to argue further, but Valeria silenced the trembling doctor with a singular, deadly glare that promised immense pain.
"Thank you for the diagnosis, Mr. Vance," Valeria said, her voice dropping to a dangerous register. "I will deploy all my vast resources to track down the perpetrators who dared to curse my grandfather. They will pay dearly."
Kaelen nodded. Having completed his task, he grabbed a pen and a medical pad from the nearby counter. He wrote down a complex detoxifying prescription. "Brew this daily for five days. It will clear his system of any remaining toxins." He handed the paper to Valeria. "Now, I will excuse myself. There is nothing more to be done."
"Let me see you off," Valeria said, matching his stride as he headed for the exit.
"Wait, Sis," Cecilia called out, eyeing the grotesque container on the table. "What should we do with these insects?"
Valeria paused at the door. Her icy gaze shifted back to Dr. Brenner, coldly sealing the arrogant doctor's miserable fate. She reminded the room of the wager they had all witnessed. "Dr. Brenner promised to eat those insects if Mr. Vance succeeded."
Brenner’s face drained of color, his knees shaking. "Ms. Sinclair, I was merely exaggerating—"
"The Sinclair family does not joke," Valeria interrupted, her tone devoid of mercy. She turned to her massive bodyguards stationed by the walls. "Make sure the doctor finishes every last bug, including the centipede, before he is allowed to leave this ward."
The towering guards cracked their knuckles and advanced on the terrified doctor. Kaelen offered a faint smirk and walked out the door, the sounds of Brenner’s frantic pleading fading behind him.
Meanwhile, in a different, much lower-tier hospital room across the city, the heavy scent of cheap antiseptic hung in the air.
"Mom! How could he do this to me? My head is killing me!"
Gideon Caldwell whined continuously from the narrow bed, his head wrapped in thick layers of gauze. Dark purple bruises peeked out from beneath the messy bandages. He demanded bloody vengeance against Kaelen for the severe beating, slamming his fist against the mattress.
Beatrice sat beside him, gently stroking his uninjured arm. "Do not worry, sweetie. I will make sure he pays for laying a hand on you."
Dexter Bellerose leaned casually against the window frame, his arms crossed over his tailored designer suit. He harbored a deeply rooted, obsessive infatuation for Sienna and intensely resented her three-year marriage to a nobody. He eagerly leaned in to offer a malicious solution.
"Mrs. Caldwell, it is unthinkable that Kaelen had the nerve to physically assault both of you," Dexter said, shaking his head in mock sympathy.
"Dexter, you would not believe it," Beatrice gritted her teeth. "That punk went mad. He hit my son like a maniac, and no one could stop him."
Flashing a dark, sinister sneer, Dexter boasted, "Well, I personally know some ruthless, underground thugs. Men who deal with this kind of trash for a living. They can easily teach the ex-husband a permanent lesson." He stepped closer to the bed, assuring the hateful mother and son. "Once my men are done with him, Kaelen is as good as dead."
Beatrice’s eyes lit up with vicious delight. "Oh, that would be wonderful!"
Gideon agreed to the dark plot, baring his teeth in a savage snarl. "Dexter, tell them not to hold back. I want his bones fractured! I want him crippled for life!"
Just as the horrific deal was struck, the door handle clicked. Sienna pushed the door open and entered the room. She wore a slinky black dress that hugged her elegant curves, though her beautiful face looked drained and exhausted. Prompted by her sudden arrival, Gideon immediately shifted gears. He flawlessly played the role of the ultimate, innocent victim.
"Sienna, you are finally here! Look at me! I am terribly hurt!"
Sienna sighed, rubbing her temples to soothe a budding headache. "Kaelen called me on my way over. He told me what happened and apologized over the phone. Let us just forget about it and move on."
Gideon’s fake tears vanished, replaced by explosive indignation. He demanded that Kaelen be dragged in to kneel and beg for his life, outright rejecting Sienna’s exhausted attempt to peacefully defuse the volatile situation. "Forget about it? Are you kidding me? I was beaten black and blue! An apology is not going to cut it!"
"He is still your brother-in-law, Gideon. Do not make a mountain out of a molehill."
Staring at his sister, Gideon angrily snapped. "Do not lie to me! I know you two are divorced! Why are you taking that bastard's side? What did I even do wrong? I only broke his stupid necklace! What is the big deal?"
Sienna froze in her tracks. The blood drained from her face, leaving her pale. A sudden chill swept through her veins. "What did you say about a necklace?" she asked in a trembling whisper.
"The ugly one he always wore," Gideon mumbled stubbornly, crossing his arms. "He claimed it was an heirloom, but I am sure it was just rubbish."
"Did you truly destroy that specific necklace?" she pressed, her voice barely audible.
Gideon admitted to the vile act without a shred of remorse. "Yeah! He was being incredibly rude. That insolent punk refused to hand over the crystal when I demanded it. That is exactly why I smashed it to pieces on the floor!"
Unable to contain her explosive realization, Sienna erupted in fiery fury. "You are truly asking for a severe beating!" she screamed at her brother, her hands shaking with unchecked rage.
The devastating truth finally dawned on her. That item was not mere rubbish. She remembered vividly that the necklace was Kaelen’s treasured family heirloom. It was the sole memento of his late mother's love—the only thing he had specifically requested to take away from their bitter divorce proceedings. He walked away from her vast fortune and luxurious assets, wanting nothing but that single piece of crystal.
"Sienna, it is just a cheap necklace!" Gideon whined, shrinking back from her intense glare. "Why are you lecturing me over this?"
"That is right!" Beatrice demanded, stepping between them to shield her son. "Is that trinket more important than your own brother’s life?"
Ignoring her mother and brother's indignant, confused whining, Sienna turned sharply on her heel. She walked rapidly out of the hospital room, the heavy door slamming shut behind her.
A crushing, suffocating weight of intense regret settled in her chest as she strode down the sterile corridor. The devastating reality clawed at her heart. She finally realized that the mild-tempered Kaelen would never have lost his temper without a profoundly justified reason. In her arrogant haste earlier, she had deeply, perhaps irreparably, wronged him with her harsh words.
