The Arrogant Doctor
Cecilia’s eyes bulged in sheer shock. Her jaw dropped slightly, her lips parted in disbelief as the diagnosis echoed in the sterile silence of the VIP ward. Kaelen had just accurately pinpointed her painful migraines, her embarrassing bouts of diarrhea, and the unspoken discomfort of hemorrhoids with nothing more than a passing glance at her tongue. A burning flush of heat crept up her neck, staining her cheeks crimson. She stood rigid, caught in a humiliating crossfire of truth and denial. Still, her massive pride refused to let her back down. She could not accept that this young man possessed such profound medical insight.
Crossing her arms defensively across her chest, she stubbornly tilted her chin upward. She scoffed, forcing a harsh laugh. "You must have just gotten lucky with a wild guess. Anyone could throw out a few common symptoms, observe a pale face, and hit the mark eventually."
Kaelen remained unfazed by her bratty attitude. He did not spare her another glance, dismissing her childish denial. Instead, he moved with purpose to the side of the hospital bed to examine her dying grandfather, Alistair. The old man lay motionless, a shadow of the titan he once was.
Kaelen reached out, his fingers resting lightly against Alistair's wrist to check the erratic pulse beneath the thin, papery skin. He leaned over the bed, his dark eyes scrutinizing the ghastly complexion, the unnatural bluish hue tinting the old man's lips, and the shallow, rattling breaths escaping his sunken chest. The clinical puzzle pieces snapped together in Kaelen's mind. He deduced the truth in seconds. The patriarch was not suffering from a mere illness or a natural progression of organ failure. A potent, fast-acting poison was currently ravaging his system, tearing through his internal organs with ruthless efficiency.
"Ms. Sinclair," Kaelen said, his voice steady as he turned to Valeria. "I need a set of sterilized silver needles. Now."
Valeria recognized the gravity in his tone. "Right away," she agreed. She waved a hand at the bodyguard standing by the door. The burly man rushed out of the ward. Minutes later, he returned, breathless, holding a pristine wooden case containing the requested acupuncture needles.
"Thank you." Kaelen took the case. He unbuttoned Alistair’s silk pajama shirt, exposing the frail, sunken stomach. He tapped his knuckles lightly against the pale flesh, a methodical sound filling the room as he mapped out specific pressure points. Without hesitation, he opened the case and began applying the fine silver needles to the mapped locations across Alistair's abdomen.
His hands moved with a light, firm deftness. He drove each needle into the skin at exact angles and depths. Valeria watched his technique closely, her eyes widening in awe. She had met many experts in the field of traditional medicine, yet the seasoned, confident skill Kaelen displayed surpassed them all. He operated with the grace and precision of a master healer, his fingers dancing over the flesh without causing the fragile patient any pain or distress.
Once all sixteen silver needles sat in symmetrical and precise placement, gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights of the ward, Kaelen let out a heavy breath. He wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand, the physical toll of the intense concentration evident on his face.
He turned to face the worried women. His expression remained uncompromising and grave. "Your grandfather has been deliberately poisoned," he warned them, his tone leaving no room for debate.
Valeria gasped, her hands flying to cover her mouth. "Poisoned?"
"Yes," Kaelen stated explicitly. "It will take exactly two hours for these silver needles to drain the deadly toxin from his failing body. You must not touch them." He locked eyes with Valeria, delivering a strict, uncompromising instruction. "Under no circumstances can you remove these needles before the two hours are up. Doing so will trigger catastrophic, fatal side effects."
He left the heavy instruction hanging in the tense air, ensuring the lethal gravity of his words settled over them. "I need to use the bathroom. Watch over him."
Kaelen turned on his heel and stepped out of the ward, the door clicking softly shut behind him.
Barely a minute after he left, the silence of the room shattered. The heavy wooden doors swung open with force, and a massive group of elite hospital doctors barged into the room. They wore crisp white coats, their stethoscopes draped around their necks, carrying themselves with an air of unearned authority. Leading the pack was a balding man with silver hair at his temples and an arrogant stride—Dr. Brenner, the hospital's renowned executive director.
Cecilia’s face lit up with relief. She rushed forward, fawning over the famous Eldridge doctor. She trusted his tailored suit and his established prestige over a youngster like Kaelen any day of the week. "Dr. Brenner! Thank goodness you are here. Please, you have to save my grandfather."
"Do not worry, Miss Sinclair. He is in the best hands now," Dr. Brenner declared proudly, offering her a practiced, comforting smile.
He approached the critical patient's bed, his entourage fanning out behind him. The moment his eyes landed on the patient, his smug smile vanished, replaced by a frown of deep disgust. He stared at the traditional silver pins sticking out of the billionaire's flesh, his face twisting in revulsion.
"What kind of archaic nonsense is this?" Dr. Brenner demanded, his voice echoing in the ward. He reached his hand out, aiming to pull the needles from the patient's stomach.
"Wait!" Valeria intervened. She lunged forward, bodily blocking the doctor from reaching the bed. "Do not touch those."
Brenner glared at her, annoyed by the sudden obstruction. "What is the meaning of this, Ms. Sinclair? Step aside so I can treat the patient."
Valeria held her ground, repeating Kaelen's grave warning. "Another healer just treated him. He stated my grandfather ingested a lethal poison. There will be fatal side effects if we interrupt the delicate treatment early. We must leave the needles in for exactly two hours."
Dr. Brenner snorted derisively. He looked back at his entourage of doctors, who chuckled on cue. "What a bunch of unscientific bullshit," he proclaimed, waving a dismissive hand. He looked back at Valeria, his eyes full of arrogant disdain. "What is the point of modern doctors and our millions of dollars in medical equipment if tiny needles can magically cure terminal ailments?"
Cecilia backed the arrogant doctor, stepping up beside him. "He is right, Valeria! That Kaelen was just a young, deceitful conman. He made a lucky guess about my condition earlier, and now he is playing sick games with Grandfather's life. How can you believe his primitive lies over the best medical mind in Eldridge?"
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the group of peers standing behind Brenner. They nodded, casting judgmental, pitying glares at Valeria for falling for such a scam.
Bolstered by the support of his staff and Cecilia's blind faith, Dr. Brenner dismissed Valeria's hesitations as dangerous, primitive superstition. "Ms. Sinclair, you are letting stress cloud your judgment. We rely on science here, not parlor tricks."
"You do not understand," Valeria pleaded, her voice trembling as she kept her body positioned between Brenner and the bed. "He was explicit about the consequences—"
"I am a very busy man with no time to waste," Dr. Brenner interrupted, puffing out his chest. He stared her down, stating with supreme finality, "If I pull these needles out and anything happens to Old Mr. Sinclair, I will take full, personal responsibility."
Without waiting for another protest, he shoved past Valeria. With supreme arrogance, Dr. Brenner grabbed the cluster of silver and yanked the sixteen needles free from the flesh in one swift motion.
The medical monitors shrieked.
Alistair’s frail body began convulsing on the mattress. His back arched hard off the bed as uncontrollable spasms tore through his limbs. The horrific reaction was terrifying. His pale face turned a sickly, necrotic black, the color draining from his skin as the unchecked toxin ravaged his bloodstream. Thick, dark blood gushed from his nose and mouth, staining the pristine white hospital sheets a gruesome, inky crimson.
The life support machines tracking his crashing vitals erupted into a frantic, continuous beeping. Red alarm lights flashed across the screens, signaling complete systemic failure.
"What... what is happening?" Brenner stammered in sheer panic. His previous arrogance shattered into pure terror as the patient coded right under his hands.
"Grandfather!" Cecilia screamed, stumbling backward until she hit the wall.
"Do something!" Valeria shrieked, tears springing to her eyes.
Dr. Brenner launched into desperate, sweaty emergency resuscitation. He slammed his hands over Alistair's chest and began pumping in a frenzy. "Get the crash cart! Push one milligram of epinephrine!" he yelled at his frozen staff, his voice cracking with panic.
The doctors scrambled, shouting conflicting orders, but it was useless. Brenner pumped the old man's chest with all his might, sweat dripping from his forehead onto the dying man's blackened skin. The thick, dark blood only continued to spill from Alistair's lips with every desperate compression. The vitals plummeted into a fatal dive. The erratic lines on the monitor flattened out into a devastating, steady tone.
Defeated, drenched in sweat, and trembling from head to toe, Dr. Brenner stopped his compressions. He stepped back from the ruined bed and slowly turned to face the horrified women. His face was ash pale, his eyes wide with disbelief and raw fear.
"Old Mr. Sinclair..." Brenner weakly stammered, his voice a hollow whisper under the blaring alarms. "He... is dying."
Both Valeria and Cecilia stared at him. The sheer horror of the bloody scene rooted them to the floor. They stood paralyzed by a profound, suffocating shock, unable to look away from the catastrophic damage.
