The Dogs Sir?
POV Vanya:
The residual high of the arena surging through my veins felt intoxicating. Every nerve ending in my body crackled with raw, untamed combat adrenaline. My blood hummed a steady, victorious rhythm against my eardrums, drowning out the roaring cheers of the crowd that still echoed beyond the heavy wooden gates of the dirt ring. Winning out there had awakened a primal hunger inside my chest. Seeing Alpha Kael’s elite warriors lower their heads in reluctant respect as I walked past them fed that hunger in a way I had never experienced before.
"That was exhilarating," my inner wolf, Nyx, purred softly, pacing the boundaries of my mind with restless, predatory energy.
"Yes, it was," I agreed silently, letting a small, private smile touch my lips.
I purposefully pushed through the heavy canvas flap of my assigned staging tent, expecting to grab my meager belongings and prepare for whatever came next. I figured the Alpha’s invitation would offer a brief respite. Instead, the heavy, suffocating stench of stale whiskey and unwashed sweat slammed into my senses. The dim lighting inside the tent offered a stark contrast to the bright sun of the arena, momentarily blinding me.
A split second later, a brutal backhand cracked across my jaw.
The sheer force of the strike snapped my head violently to the side. Bright bursts of white light flashed behind my retinas. A sharp metallic tang flooded my mouth as my teeth cut deep into the inside of my cheek. I stumbled, my heavy boots skidding against the packed dirt floor as I fought to keep my balance.
Vulkan loomed out of the shadows. His face twisted into a dark, sinister sneer, his eyes black with malicious intent.
"You think I am going to allow you to leave me?" he hissed, his voice dripping with absolute venom.
Before I could regain my footing or raise my hands to defend myself, he lunged. His massive hands clamped around my shoulders, shoving me forward with brutal force. He drove my body hard against a thick, splintered wooden support post in the center of the tent. The impact knocked the breath from my lungs. He pressed his heavy weight against my back, pinning my head aggressively against the rough wood. Sharp splinters bit into my cheek.
"You belong to me," he spat, his hot, sour breath fanning over my ear.
His large, filthy hand snaked around the front of my body, grabbing my breast with a sick, bruising entitlement. He squeezed the flesh roughly, his calloused fingers digging into me like I was nothing more than property. Behind me, I felt the unmistakable, hard pressure of his erection digging into my backside.
Pure, unadulterated revulsion surged through my gut. The fight in the arena had woken up a dormant beast inside me, and Vulkan's touch was the match striking the powder keg. I refused to be a victim for another single second of my life.
Running on pure combat adrenaline, I planted my hands flat against the wooden post for leverage. I shifted my weight, driving my heel down into the dirt, and thrust my knee backward directly into his exposed groin with every ounce of force I could summon.
The sickening crunch of impact echoed in the quiet tent.
Vulkan released me instantly. A strangled, high-pitched howl ripped from his throat. His massive frame crumpled. He dropped to his knees, clutching his genitals, his face draining of color as he folded over onto the dirt floor in pure agony.
I spun around, stepping away from the post, my chest heaving. A low, feral growl rumbled in my throat. I flexed my fingers, feeling the familiar, deadly slide of my claws extending from my nail beds. I took a step toward his writhing form, fully prepared to slice him to bloody, unrecognizable pieces.
A throat cleared near the entrance.
I froze, my claws inches from Vulkan's face.
A tall, well-built stranger confidently stepped into the dimly lit tent. He wore tailored clothes and carried an air of unquestionable authority, completely unfazed by the sight of a feral fighter standing over a groaning man. He casually glanced at Vulkan bleeding in the dirt, then locked his piercing gaze with me.
"Did I interrupt?" the man asked smoothly, arching a dark eyebrow.
I didn't retract my claws. "Cutting this piece of shit into filets? No. You didn't interrupt."
The stranger offered a faint, amused smirk. "Let me introduce myself. I am Vaughn Vanguard, Beta, and Brother to Alpha Kael, who has officially asked you to join us for dinner tonight."
Vulkan gasped, trying frantically to push himself up on wobbly legs. His face was red and splotchy with pain and fury. "She isn't going anywhere," Vulkan choked out, spitting a glob of bloody saliva onto the dirt. "She goes back with me."
I didn't hesitate. I drove my boot square into Vulkan's jaw, snapping his head back and sending him sprawling flat on his back once more. "Stay down, you vile piece of shit." I leaned over, digging my sharp claws into the side of his cheek just enough to draw a thin line of fresh blood.
Vaughn casually studied the pathetic man bleeding in the dirt for a long second. He didn't seem to care that one of the arena handlers was being beaten to a pulp. He calmly turned his attention back to me, crossing his arms over his broad chest. "What do you personally want to do with him?" Vaughn asked, his tone almost conversational.
I stared at Vulkan. The years of abuse, the cages, the heavy chains, the endless degradation flashed through my mind in rapid succession. I let my lips curl into a deeply sinister, chilling smile.
"I would like to cut off his dick and balls and feed them to his dogs while he watches," I stated plainly, my voice deadpan and devoid of any mercy.
The silence that followed was thick. Vaughn blinked, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his features. Several elite warriors who had just stepped into the tent behind Vaughn visibly flinched at my blunt words.
Vulkan’s face turned a violent shade of purple with rage. "You crazy bitch, I will kill you!" he shouted, his voice cracking with desperation and fury.
That threat was exactly the final push I needed.
Moving significantly faster than anyone in the room could mentally process or physically react to, I spun around. I dropped my weight, bringing myself level with Vulkan's groin. Before he could even raise his hands to defend himself, I dug my sharp, extended claws directly into his crotch.
I dragged my razor-sharp nails in a brutal, sweeping motion, slicing cleanly through fabric, skin, and thick muscle. Vulkan’s agonizing scream tore through the canvas walls, a sound of pure horror. I flawlessly executed my exact threat, ripping the severed, bloody pieces of his dick and balls completely away from his body.
Warm blood sprayed across the dirt and splattered my boots. Vulkan convulsed, his hands flying to the ruined, pouring mess between his legs, his eyes rolling back in his head from the sheer shock of the trauma.
I stood up smoothly, the bloody flesh gripped tightly in my hand. Without a second thought, I casually tossed the severed genitals directly into the dark corner of the tent where Vulkan’s two massive German shepherds had been chained. The dogs snapped the bloody meat out of the air, devouring their former master's flesh in seconds.
Vaughn stood stunned, his mouth slightly parted. He stared at the rapid pool of blood expanding around Vulkan, then at the dogs licking their chops, and finally at me. A loud, booming laugh of pure disbelief erupted from his chest. He shook his head, undeniably amused by the sheer savagery of the surreal scene.
"Fuck," Vaughn chuckled, raising a hand to signal his men. "Drag his rapidly bleeding body out of here and burn it. Any winnings he had go back to the house."
One of the warriors, looking pale and horrified at the bloody mess on the floor, gestured toward the corner. "What about the dogs, sir?"
I placed my thumb and middle finger in my mouth and let out a sharp, commanding whistle. The two loyal dogs, Bane and Zira, instantly snapped to attention. They trotted past Vulkan's twitching body and firmly planted themselves at my side, pressing their thick coats against my legs.
"There's your answer," Vaughn laughed, shaking his head again. He politely motioned toward the exit. "If you would follow me, we will get you washed up and dressed."
I let my claws retract, wiping the excess blood on my pants. I stepped over Vulkan without a second glance and followed Vaughn out of the blood-stained tent, Bane and Zira shadowing my every step.
Vaughn personally escorted me through the busy village of staging tents. We walked away from the noise and the dirt of the fighting pits, heading toward a massive, imposing estate that loomed over the territory. It looked more like a fortress or a castle than a house. Thick stone walls stretched five stories high, accented by towering stained-glass windows, dark mahogany woodwork, and sweeping cathedral ceilings. The sheer scale of the place was intimidating.
We bypassed the main living areas entirely. Vaughn led me to a smooth, wood-paneled wall and pressed a hidden button. The wall slid open, revealing a sleek, private elevator. I stepped inside, flanked by the dogs, while Vaughn and a young female fighter followed.
Vaughn pressed the button for the top floor. "Right now, the only guest room open is on the Alpha's private floor. We will set you up on the far side of the wing," he explained smoothly. He gestured to the woman beside him. "This is Cleo. She is a fighter here, and she is specifically tasked with helping you prepare for the evening."
Cleo offered a very polite, well-mannered nod. Her shoulder-length brown hair swayed, and her amber eyes held a gentle warmth. "Hi, I'm Cleo."
"Vanya," I replied flatly, giving a small nod in return.
The elevator doors chimed and slid open. We stepped out onto a sprawling floor dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a serene bayou lake. The evening sky was bleeding into vibrant shades of violet, pink, and orange, reflecting off the dark, calm water. I had never seen a view like it.
Vaughn stopped in front of heavy, hand-carved mahogany doors and pushed them open. I stepped into an intensely luxurious guest room. Soft gray-white granite floors stretched across the massive space. A giant four-poster bed sat to the left, draped in sheer gray curtains, while large French doors opened to a private terrace overlooking the lake. It was a level of wealth I couldn't comprehend.
A knock at the open door drew my attention. A young, fit man with bright hazel eyes stepped into the room.
"This is Gavin," Vaughn introduced him. "He will take the dogs down to the kitchens for dinner and get them cleaned up."
I stepped between Gavin and the dogs, locking my eyes firmly onto his. The sheer intensity of my stare made the young man pause. I knelt down, rubbing the soft fur behind Bane and Zira's ears, then looked back up at Gavin.
"The male is Bane. The female is Zira," I told him, my voice dropping to a strict, deadly warning. "You take good care of them. Those dogs are my absolute only friends in this world. If anything happens to them, I will hold you personally responsible."
Gavin swallowed hard, nodding quickly. "They will be treated like absolute royalty, I promise."
I stood up and gave a sharp hand signal. Bane and Zira followed Gavin out of the room, their tails wagging slightly. With the dogs safely handled, Vaughn gave a polite nod and excused himself, closing the heavy mahogany doors behind him, leaving me alone with Cleo.
"Let's get you showered," Cleo said with a bright, encouraging smile, gently leading me toward the two doors on the left side of the room.
We stepped into a lavish, marble-tiled bathroom that was bigger than the staging tent I had fought in. A massive walk-in shower faced one-way floor-to-ceiling windows, and a deep soaking tub big enough for four people sat against the wall. The space smelled clean, like fresh linen and expensive soap.
I stood in the center of the room and began to methodically strip off my filthy, blood-stained fighting gear. I unbuckled the leather straps, letting my worn boots hit the marble. I pulled the heavy, sweat-soaked tunic over my head and tossed it aside, turning my back to the mirror to unhook my bindings.
A loud, horrified gasp suddenly broke the quiet silence of the room.
I paused, grabbing a towel to cover my front, and glanced over my shoulder. Cleo had taken several steps back, her hands clamped tightly over her mouth in pure, unadulterated shock. Her amber eyes rapidly welled with thick tears, her gaze fixed openly and fearfully on my completely ruined back.
I knew what she was looking at. The heavy, raised ridges of scarred tissue. The deep, crisscrossing silver-laced whip marks permanently etched into my flesh. The burns, the slashes, the documented history of extensive, horrific physical trauma that covered every inch of skin from my shoulder blades down to my hips.
Cleo stepped forward gently, her hands shaking. "Vanya... how long?" she asked fearfully, her voice trembling as she stared at the brutal canvas of my survival.
"Since I was four," I told her flatly, my tone completely detached. "But the real, systematic torture began when I was eight."
Cleo let out a soft sob, tears spilling over her lashes and running silently down her cheeks.
I shrugged off her reaction. I had long ago forced my nervous system to go completely numb to the phantom pain of those strikes. They were just marks. They meant nothing now because the man who put most of them there was currently burning in a tent.
I turned away from her pity and stepped into the glorious, scalding hot water of the shower. Cleo adjusted the settings, and an advanced multi-jet system sprang to life. High-pressure streams of hot water hit my aching muscles from every direction. I closed my eyes, letting out a long breath.
I reached for a jar on the marble shelf, scooping out a handful of incredibly sweet-smelling cherry blossom body scrub. The coarse texture felt amazing against my skin. I scrubbed my arms, my legs, my neck, watching the water at my feet turn red and brown as it washed away the dirt, the dried blood, and the literal and metaphorical grime of my miserable, captive past. This level of physical comfort was an absolute luxury I had never once known existed. I stood under the stream until the water ran crystal clear.
Stepping out, I dried off with an oversized cream towel that felt as soft as spun cotton. Cleo had recovered her composure and waited for me at the vanity mirror. She had prepared a toothbrush and a glass of minty blue liquid. I had always used a rag to clean my teeth, so the brush felt strange but incredibly refreshing.
I sat down, and she went to work. She expertly brushed out the stubborn tangles in my impossibly long ebony hair, her fingers moving with gentle precision. She swept the heavy locks up into an elegant, sweeping half-up style, leaving the rest to cascade down my back. She added a touch of mascara and eyeliner, keeping the look natural to enhance my striking features.
Then, she brought over the dress.
It was a stunning, flawlessly comfortable black gown. She handed me a pair of soft boy shorts to wear underneath, assuring me they were the best choice for the built-in bra of the dress. I stepped into the gown, letting Cleo adjust the fit. The fabric was incredibly soft against my skin. It perfectly accentuated my curvy features, hugging my waist and hips before flowing elegantly to the floor. More importantly, the cut of the dress strategically kept my horrific back scars entirely hidden from view, leaving only my collarbone and the smooth skin of my shoulders exposed.
I stood in front of the full-length vanity mirror, staring deeply at my own reflection. I didn't look like a caged fighter. I didn't look like a bruised, beaten slave. I looked powerful. I looked dangerous.
"You are beautiful, Vanya," Nyx hummed in my mind, her voice filled with dark pride.
I finally reached a unanimous agreement with my inner wolf. "We are beautiful," I replied silently.
Cleo offered a bright, encouraging smile, clearly pleased with her work. She playfully gestured toward the heavy oak door, gracefully bowing her head to officially escort me down to the dining hall.
I nodded, my flats stepping silently on the thick carpet as we left the room. My two loyal dogs were safely treated like absolute royalty downstairs. My past was gone. I confidently followed Cleo's lead down the massive stone hallway, my mind entirely dismissing the looming Alpha who had invited me, and entirely focused on one singular, thrilling prospect:
Food! Actual, glorious food.
