A Miraculous Cure
The chaotic shouting intensified with every passing second, echoing down the long, sterile corridors of Oakmont Hospital. The sharp smell of disinfectant hung heavy in the air, doing nothing to calm the rising panic near the emergency ward. A middle-aged man dressed in a sharp, expensive suit paced outside the double doors, his face pale and distorted with sheer terror. He grabbed a passing nurse by her scrub top, his voice rising to a deafening roar.
"What kind of garbage hospital is this? Where is your director? I want to see him right now! Bring out your very best medical staff! I am warning you, the person lying on that gurney is not some average citizen you can neglect!"
The man was Tobias, and his eyes bulged with desperate fury as he gestured toward the medical team wheeling a patient into the trauma bay. "He is Alaric Hayes, the world-famous traditional painter from Valtoria! He was personally invited by your city's administration to hold an exclusive art exhibition here! Who is going to be held responsible if anything happens to him? If he dies, your entire hospital will be closed down!"
Marcella stopped in her tracks. The heavy paper bag containing her rare medical herbs felt solid in her grip. The name Alaric Hayes struck a deep, resonant chord in her memory. In her past life, she had been a medical legend, but she had also possessed a deep appreciation for the traditional arts. She remembered meeting Alaric. She had once given him invaluable artistic advice that helped him break through a major creative bottleneck, though at the time, he had barely spoken two words to her, keeping his distance because of her low status and controversial reputation.
She turned around slowly, her clear eyes focusing on the chaotic scene unfolding near the emergency room. Her expression remained flat, but her mind was already calculating. She began walking back toward the source of the noise.
Tobias, pacing frantically, spotted her approaching. His gaze swept over her heavy frame and the severe acne scars covering her face. He let out a harsh, irritated breath. "Get the hell out of the way, kid! This is not a place for onlookers! Go back to whatever hole you crawled out of!"
Marcella did not flinch. She stopped a few feet from him and said in a calm, measured voice, "Let me go in and take a look at him."
Tobias stared at her, utterly incredulous. "You? Are you out of your mind? Look at yourself!" The more he looked at her messy appearance, the more offended he felt by her presence.
Before he could call security to drag her away, rapid, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway. A group of doctors in white coats rushed toward the trauma bay, led by a man wiping beads of cold sweat from his forehead. It was Lucius Pratt, the hospital director. He approached Tobias, humbling himself with an anxious bow.
"Mr. Tobias, please calm down. How is Mr. Hayes doing?"
"How is he doing? Your emergency doctors just came out and said they can do nothing for him!" Tobias screamed, his face turning red. "Summon your best surgeon at once!"
Lucius's hands trembled as he stepped closer to the gurney to examine the patient. He looked at the medical monitor, his face turning increasingly pale. The lead physician beside him shook his head, delivering a grim prognosis.
"Director Pratt, it is a massive, ruptured aneurysm. It must have occurred on his way to the hospital. Without immediate, advanced intervention within thirty minutes, he will die. We do not have the equipment or the specialized surgeons available to perform such a delicate procedure in time."
"Thirty minutes?" Lucius gasped, his voice cracking. How was he supposed to find a world-class neurosurgeon and set up a complex operating theater in thirty minutes? If Alaric Hayes died in his hospital, the Hayes family would destroy his career. He was trapped in a nightmare.
Just as the medical staff began to spiral into panic, a crisp, clear voice cut through the heavy silence.
"I can save him."
The words were spoken with certainty, lacking any trace of hesitation. Everyone in the hallway froze, turning their heads to find the source of the voice. Their eyes landed on Marcella.
The onlookers, doctors, and nurses stared at her in disbelief, which quickly twisted into derision. She was a stocky young girl covered in blemishes, looking more like a troubled high schooler than a medical professional. Yet, her gaze was piercingly clear, and her posture was firm.
Lucius frowned, his voice dropping into a stern, warning tone. "We are at a hospital, young lady. This is a critical medical emergency. You cannot make childish jokes here."
Marcella met his gaze, her eyes cold and imperious. "I am not joking. I said I can save him, and I meant it."
The surrounding crowd grew displeased with her arrogance. A senior doctor, Doctor Harrison, stepped forward, appraising her with deep contempt. "Who do you think you are? Didn't your family teach you any manners? Step aside and let the professionals do their job!"
"I am Marcella Vance," she replied in a flat, even tone.
The moment the name left her lips, a wave of recognition and disgust swept through the crowd. The whispers started instantly, sharp and vicious.
"Marcella Vance? The useless delinquent from the Vance family?"
"Yes, that's her! She just got released after spending three years in there for theft and violence!"
Doctor Harrison sneered, reaching out and grabbing her arm to pull her away from the door. "So it is you! A useless delinquent who just got out of prison claims she has a way to save Mr. Hayes? What a joke! Do you think medical skills can be learned in a jail cell?"
The bystanders joined in the mockery, laughing openly.
"Look at her face. She looks like a monster, and she acts like a lunatic."
"Is she trying to commit murder? People like her should rot in prison forever!"
"The Vance family must be mortified. She skipped school, got arrested, and now she is trying to embarrass them in public by playing doctor!"
Marcella looked at the sneering crowd, her eyes narrowing slightly. A cold, mocking smile played on her lips, though it did not reach her eyes. She felt no anger toward these ignorant fools, only pity for their blindness.
"You do not believe me?" she asked, her voice dropping to an icy whisper.
"Of course nobody believes you!" a nurse scoffed. "Who in their right mind would trust a criminal? Go away before you cause Mr. Hayes's death!"
"Are you so oblivious that you do not even know you are trash, Marcella?" another bystander sneered. "Did you come here to take revenge on society?"
Marcella listened to the scathing words and chuckled softly. "Fine. If none of you believe I can save him, I could easily walk away and watch him die. But I have never been one to tolerate insults. I will show you what being a real doctor is all about."
Before anyone could react to her words, Marcella moved.
Her action was lightning-fast. With a sudden twist of her wrist, she broke Doctor Harrison's grip. She slipped past the stunned security guards like a shadow, ducked into Alaric's private room, and slammed the heavy oak door shut.
The sound of the lock turning from the inside echoed sharply through the corridor.
The hallway erupted into chaos.
"What did she do? She locked herself in!"
"Quick, get the door open! Mr. Hayes is in there! If she hurts him, we are all finished!"
"Marcella, I am warning you!" Lucius screamed, throwing his weight against the solid wood. "That man is one of the nation's greatest artists! If anything happens to him, I will ensure you spend the rest of your life in maximum security!"
The bodyguards began to shoulder-charge the door, the heavy thuds vibrating through the frame. But the lock held firm, and the door refused to budge.
Inside the quiet room, Marcella blocked out the frantic shouting and pounding. She walked calmly to the side of the bed. Alaric lay there, his breathing shallow and ragged, his face devoid of color.
She opened her paper bag and pulled out her medical tools, including a set of silver acupuncture needles she kept hidden on her person. Her hands were steady. She had no modern operating theater, but she possessed knowledge that surpassed modern science.
With rapid, precise movements, she began inserting the needles into specific acupoints on Alaric's chest and temples. Each strike was flawless, targeting the exact pathways to relieve the pressure of the ruptured aneurysm and force his blood flow to stabilize. She then extracted the essence of the rare herbs she had purchased, carefully administering it to stimulate his vital organs.
Outside, the shouting continued, but Marcella remained in a state of focus. Five minutes passed. Then ten.
Gradually, the erratic, high-pitched beeping of the heart monitor slowed down. The ragged, gasping sounds from Alaric’s chest subsided, replaced by deep, even breathing. His pale skin began to regain a faint, healthy color.
Marcella packed her tools back into her bag. She glanced at the sleeping artist, satisfied with the results, and walked to the door.
She unlocked it and pushed it open.
The moment the door swung inward, Lucius and the bodyguards almost tumbled into the room. They had been preparing to use a heavy metal crowbar to break the lock.
Marcella stepped past them without a word, her expression indifferent.
"What did you do to him?" Lucius bellowed, his face pale with dread as he rushed past her. He expected to find a lifeless body.
"Don't let her get away! Grab her!" Tobias shouted, rushing to Alaric's bedside.
But in the ensuing confusion, as the doctors and guards crowded around the bed, Marcella simply walked away. She merged with the crowd in the main hallway and vanished from the hospital, slipping away without leaving a single trace.
Inside the room, Lucius stared at Alaric, who was lying peacefully on the bed, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. The director let out a long, trembling breath of relief.
Suddenly, he remembered Marcella. He turned around and ran to the door, shouting, "Get her! Do not let her escape!"
The bodyguards rushed into the hallway, looking around frantically. They returned a moment later, looking thoroughly confused. "Director, she is gone. She vanished right under our noses."
Lucius's face darkened, but as he looked back at the unconscious artist, a calculating gleam appeared in his eyes. He secretly rejoiced.
Alaric had been declared beyond saving by his own staff. If he died under the hospital's care, the Hayes family would destroy the hospital's reputation and hold Lucius responsible. But now, Marcella Vance had forced her way into the room.
She was the perfect scapegoat.
If Alaric died, Lucius could simply blame the delinquent girl who locked herself in the room. The hospital would be blameless, and his career would be saved.
"Split up and pretend to look for her," Lucius ordered the guards, a cold, relieved smile forming on his lips. "If Mr. Hayes passes away, we will hold her responsible."
But before he could fully relish his plan, a sharp, disbelieving cry shattered the silence of the room.
"Director Pratt! Look! He... he is awake!"
Lucius froze. He slowly turned his head toward the bed, his heart skipping a beat.
Alaric Hayes had opened his eyes. His gaze was calm and lucid, devoid of the fog of death. The medical monitors beeped in a perfect, healthy rhythm. His vitals were restored, his breathing steady, and the terminal crisis was gone.
Lucius stared in horror, his mind going blank as his carefully crafted plan crumbled to dust. It was impossible. The delinquent had actually cured him.
