Hacking the Treasury

Much to Odette's surprise, she was wrong. Horace Langley stood frozen by the study door, his mouth slightly open as he stared at Marcella in pure shock. He looked back at the glowing projector screen, his hands trembling as he closely examined the brushstrokes and the subtle blending of the digital image.

"No," Horace breathed, his voice quivering with awe. He took a hasty step back into the room, his eyes glued to the display. "She is right. What she said is true."

Odette's smug, triumphant smile vanished in an instant. A creeping sense of dread washed over her as she clenched her fists so hard her nails dug crescent moons into her palms. Sylvia stood rooted to the spot, staring in utter bewilderment.

Horace pointed a shaking finger at the screen, his previous arrogance replaced by profound humility. "This is only a replica. A masterful one, but a replica nonetheless. She is correct about that detail. Who else in this world but Cleo Ashford could create such astounding, visionary artwork?" He turned to face Marcella, baffling confusion etched into his features. "It is a tragedy that she retired from the artistic world two years ago and left behind only three priceless pieces. The mystery surrounding her identity has baffled the community for years. But... how did a teenage girl like you come to possess such deep, obscure knowledge of the great, reclusive Ms. Ashford?"

Marcella looked at the renowned art critic. Her face held a flat, indifferent expression. She did not preen under his praise or offer a modest smile. She just gave him a deadpan look, turned toward the heavy mahogany door, and grabbed the brass handle.

"Because I'm her," Marcella said.

She pulled the door open and walked out, letting it click shut behind her.

The bold words hung heavy in the stifling air. She claimed she was Cleo Ashford.

Sylvia and Odette quickly recovered from their momentary shock. The sheer absurdity of the statement shattered the tension in the room, replacing it with loud, mocking scoffs.

"You are out of your mind!" Sylvia shrieked at the closed door, her voice shrill with embarrassment and rage. "I thought you just brushed up on your knowledge after receiving the art exhibition invitation, but you are just delusional! How dare you claim to be a renowned master artist?"

Odette sneered, her false confidence rushing back. "I would be happy enough if you were half as brilliant as me and stopped with that delinquent nonsense that landed you in a juvenile detention center. But unfortunately, you have proven yourself to be nothing more than an embarrassment desperately trying to seek attention."

Marcella did not care what they thought. She ignored the shouting echoing from the study as she headed straight down the hall.

Back in her small, dimly lit bedroom, Marcella shut the door and walked to her outdated computer desk. Her main priority was clear. She needed to purge the deadly toxins wreaking havoc on her system. She could feel the poison sluggishly moving through her veins, draining her stamina. She had to regain her peak physical strength and prepare for her eventual return to Valtoria to reclaim her life. To achieve this, she required a massive amount of money to purchase rare, potent medical herbs. Her personal bank accounts were locked tight, frozen by Sabrina to cut off her resources.

She sat in the creaky chair and woke the monitor. Her chubby fingers hovered over the keyboard for a fraction of a second before they blurred into motion. She typed with blinding speed, inputting a long series of complex codes. The screen flashed, lines of data cascading down the black background as the page refreshed and redirected to a secure server.

System prompts popped up in rapid succession, accompanied by sharp electronic beeps.

Hacking international bank system...

Please key in the passcode...

Decoding encryption...

Please key in the relevant code...

Marcella’s eyes tracked the data streams. She easily navigated through the state-of-the-art security firewalls of the major international bank. This was a system fortified by top-tier cybersecurity professionals, yet she dismantled its core defenses in mere minutes.

Another beep sounded from the cheap speakers. Decoding successful. Please key in the name of the cardholder.

She typed a familiar name into the terminal, one that ended with Thorne. Kaelen Thorne.

A second later, the system flashed green. Access granted.

Marcella leaned back in her seat. The transaction screen displayed a staggering balance in Kaelen's heavily guarded private account. She drew a hard line at stealing funds from a random stranger or crashing a civilian bank, but with her own money inaccessible, she had no choice but to borrow from her brother to fund her recovery. Her fingers tapped a few keys, initiating a swift, untraceable transfer. One million dollars siphoned quietly from Kaelen's ledger into an offshore account she controlled.

She watched the transfer complete, a faint smirk touching her lips. "Sorry, Kaelen," she whispered into the quiet room.

Hundreds of miles away, in a luxury high-rise towering over the sprawling metropolis of Valtoria, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Four young men in their twenties occupied the modern living room.

Kaelen Thorne leaned against the floor-to-ceiling window, the city lights reflecting in his dark eyes. His white dress shirt hung loose, the top two buttons undone to reveal his sculpted chest. He spun his phone between his slender fingers, a dark, dangerous smile playing on his lips.

"Darius is right," Kaelen said, his voice cold and resolute. "If Sabrina had not taken that mission in Valie's stead, Valie would have died in that plane crash. We owe Sabrina our gratitude, but we owe Valie our lives."

The brothers had rushed to the smoking crash site days ago, dreading the worst. A body had been pulled from the flaming wreckage. After agonizing hours of tests, the coroner confirmed the victim was not Valeria, but Sabrina, the adoptive daughter of the Thorne family. They believed their precious sister was safe and mourning in the other room.

"I have decided," Kaelen continued, his grip tightening on the phone. "The four of us will stay by her side. We must fiercely protect and cherish her. Anyone who even thinks about laying a finger on her will be annihilated along with their entire family."

"You are right to be cautious, Kaelen." Zane Thorne spoke from the shadows. The eldest brother stood leaning against the wall, dressed in a sharp black suit. He slowly looked up, his sharp eyes filled with deep, gnawing doubts. "She was lucky to survive this time, but she might not be so lucky the next time. Countless people in this world are hoping she perishes."

Zane paused, a heavy frown creasing his forehead as he stepped into the light. "But... I cannot shake this feeling. Valeria did not seem quite herself today. Did she not feel different to you when she came home? She carried a strange, intimidating aura that just did not match the girl we raised."

The other brothers looked at Zane, processing his heavy words. Darius sighed from the leather couch, running a hand through his hair. "I have to agree with you, Zane. She seemed different to me, too. But her looks, her behavior, her voice—they all align perfectly with Valeria's past experiences. Even her physical strength matches. You are just traumatized by the false alarm, Zane. We all thought we lost her in that wreckage."

"No," Zane insisted. He narrowed his eyes, dark suspicion swirling in his gaze. "It is just a feeling. When I looked at her, I felt a strange urge to stake my life to protect her, yet at the same time, she felt imposing in a way that makes one want to grovel at her feet. That is not our sister."

Before the debate could escalate, a sharp, lively chime shattered the quiet of the penthouse.

The high-priority alert came from Kaelen's phone. He glanced down at the glowing screen. His face drained of color. His jaw dropped in pure shock as he read a notification he simply could not comprehend. "What the hell? How is this even possible?"

His frantic scream caused his brothers to snap to attention, exchanging confused glances.

"What is it?" Zane demanded.

Kaelen stared at the notification for a long moment before looking up. "A million dollars was just debited from my private international bank account."

Darius scoffed, relaxing back into the couch. "It is just a million dollars, so what is the big deal? Wait... did you just say a million? Zane, are you testing our security again?"

"It was not me," Zane said, his tone dead serious. "If I broke in, he would be missing a billion."

"Then who could have done it?"

The brothers exchanged tense, baffled looks. The bank they ran utilized an impregnable anti-breaching system designed by the greatest hacker in the world. It was a digital fortress. Yet someone had just waltzed in, bypassed the firewalls, and robbed Kaelen right under their noses.

"The only person who can get past our bank's security system is..." Kaelen trailed off, his eyes widening in realization. "Valeria! It has to be Valie. She is the only one who has the skills to break into this specific network."

Kaelen’s fingers flew across his screen, pulling up the security logs to track the IP address and location of the breach. Lines of code cascaded down his phone as the tracking software locked onto the source. He froze, stumped by the result.

"The hack did not originate in Valtoria," Kaelen announced, showing the screen to his brothers. "The signal is coming from a distant city. Oakmont."

Zane stepped forward, the shadows melting away from his face. His expression hardened into a cold, lethal mask. The suspicion that had been gnawing at him since the afternoon flared into a raging fire. If the girl sitting in the room down the hall was not behind this, who could it be? Why take only a million dollars? This proved his instincts right. Something was deeply wrong.

"Kaelen," Zane commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument. "Pack a bag. You are traveling to Oakmont immediately. Locate this hacker at all costs."

Oblivious to the chaos she had unleashed upon her brothers in Valtoria, Marcella stepped out of a sleek taxi in front of the largest hospital in Oakmont. The stolen funds from Kaelen's account had cleared instantly, providing her with the vast financial resources needed to purchase her expensive prescription.

She walked through the sliding glass doors into the bustling lobby. The harsh fluorescent lights beat down on her, highlighting her frame. She navigated the crowded hospital corridors with a calm, measured pace.

She did not miss the judgmental stares of the bystanders. People pointed fingers, whispering behind their hands as she passed the waiting areas.

"Look at her face," a woman muttered to her friend in disgust. "Her skin is covered in those hideous acne scars."

"I know her," a man whispered loudly to a nurse. "That is the Vance girl. The one with the juvenile detention past. Heard her kleptomaniac tendencies landed her three years behind bars. She is nothing but a delinquent."

Even a passing nurse shot her a look of pure repulsion, stepping out of her path and sneering, "Gosh, she looks like the stuff of nightmares."

Marcella ignored the cruel public mockery. She kept her eyes focused straight ahead, her expression flat. The hateful words of strangers meant nothing to a woman focused on survival. Her mind was fixed solely on securing her medicine.

She reached the specialized pharmacy counter at the end of the wing. She calmly collected the heavy paper bag filled with the rare, potent medical herbs she requested. She adjusted her grip on the bag and turned around, preparing to leave the hospital.

She walked halfway down the main corridor. The exit doors came into view. Just as she reached the threshold, a piercing, frantic scream echoed through the busy hallway, cutting through the murmurs of the crowd.

"Doctor! I need a doctor over here! Please, help us! He is dying!"
