The Silent Announcement
POV: HAZEL
My afternoon lies in ruins, crumbling into a reality miles removed from the joyous fantasy I envisioned just hours ago. When I climbed into my car to drive home, my mind painted a vibrant picture of telling Declan about the pregnancy. I imagined him lifting me into his strong arms, spinning me around our grand foyer, his lips pressing eager kisses against my cheeks as he swore we were going to be the perfect parents.
Divorce papers never factored into that dream.
Five agonizing hours have passed since that moment at the dining table. My legs remain numb and useless, anchoring my trembling body to the exact spot on the hardwood floor where he abandoned me. The fading afternoon sunlight stretches into long, haunting shadows across the room. I stay frozen in the stillness, my mind a blank, ringing void, until the distant, rhythmic thud of familiar footsteps echoes through the front hall. He is back.
Driven by a sudden, desperate surge of adrenaline, I force myself up. My fingers snatch the heavy stack of documents from the table. I march up the sweeping staircase, the thick paper crinkling in my white-knuckled grip, and track him to our sprawling master bedroom. He is standing near the foot of the bed, casually unbuttoning his tailored cuffs as if this is just another mundane Tuesday.
I corner him, furious tears stinging the corners of my eyes, and fling the heavy stack of papers across the room. The pages scatter like dead leaves, sliding across the polished floorboards and coming to rest at his expensive leather shoes.
"What is going on, Declan?" I demand, my voice cracking under the crushing weight of my panic. "What is the meaning of this?"
Declan does not flinch. He slowly turns his head, his sharp jawline set in stone, and meets my gaze with eyes devoid of any shared history.
"This is the second time you are asking me that exact question," he deadpans, his tone dry and detached. "Don't you have any substantive questions after thoroughly going through the divorce agreements?"
I stare at him, my chest heaving. "I haven't read a single word of them!" I yell, the raw sound tearing at my throat. "And I won't. I refuse to read a single page until you look me in the eye and give me a real, justifiable reason for destroying our life. Why was your ex-fiancée sitting in our private home to deliver this news?"
He sighs, a harsh, dismissive sound that echoes off the high ceiling. He folds his arms across his chest, staring at me with an exhausted, almost bored expression. "She was simply acting as a lawyer."
I step closer, fighting back a fresh wave of stinging tears. "Vanessa is a corporate attorney, Declan. She is not a divorce lawyer." I swallow the hard lump in my throat, letting my guard down, letting him see the naked vulnerability in my eyes. "Is she the reason you are divorcing me?"
An intense, prolonged silence fills the space between us. My heartbeat turns erratic, slamming violently against my ribs as I wait for him to deny it. A wife craves reassurance, a desperate plea to hear that the nightmare is all in her head. But his silence stretches, suffocating and heavy.
Instead of offering comfort, he raises a hand and casually flicks his fingers in the empty space between us.
"I am simply wondering how this even happened," he states coldly, his voice devoid of any warmth. "How I ended up here, with you. There are certain decisions people make in life that just don't end well. Let us take this marriage as one of those impulsive choices."
My lungs contract. The man who vowed to love me until death is standing feet away, reducing our sacred vows to a regretful mistake.
"This has to be about Vanessa," I push again, my voice shaking with rising desperation. "Everything was fine until she showed up. Tell me the truth!"
"This has nothing to do with Vanessa!" he roars, his voice booming off the bedroom walls, vibrating through the floorboards beneath my feet. "This has everything to do with us." He drags a hand through his dark hair, exhaling a harsh breath. "I am exhausted, Hazel. I just want to get dressed and be ready for tonight's charity gala. Leave it alone."
Desperate to find a logical anchor in this sea of madness, I grab at one last, painful thread. The secret I have carried all afternoon burns heavily on my tongue, begging to be released.
"Is this because we don't have a baby yet?" I ask, my voice dropping to a fragile whisper.
Declan pauses. The anger in his posture shifts, melting into something far worse. A sickeningly sad smile touches the corners of his lips. He looks at me not with anger, but with profound pity.
"You know, Hazel," he begins, his voice dropping to a quiet, lethal register. "I have never been so glad that we haven't had a baby since we got married."
My lips tremble. The words slice through the air, but he isn't finished. He twists the knife deep into my chest, making sure the wound is fatal.
"Because there is no child, there is no messy aftermath to deal with. There are no custody battles, no shared holidays. And most importantly, there is absolutely no reason for us to ever see each other or be forced to tolerate each other ever again."
*Tolerate.*
The specific word acts as a physical blow to my stomach. It steals every remaining ounce of oxygen from the sprawling room. The idea that he has merely been tolerating my presence, enduring our life together, shatters my reality into irreparable fragments.
My chest tightens like a vise. I clutch the fabric of my shirt, my mouth opening, but no air enters my lungs. The room begins to spin, the edges of my vision darkening as a severe panic attack takes hold. I drop to my knees, hitting the hardwood floor, gasping for breath that refuses to come. My throat closes up. I am drowning on dry land.
Watching me hyperventilate on the bedroom floor, my husband shows zero panic. His expression remains carved from ice. He doesn't rush to my side. He doesn't pull me into his arms to soothe the terror gripping my body.
Instead, he calmly walks over to his bedside drawer. He pulls out a wrinkled brown paper bag, walks back, and tosses it onto the floor right at my trembling feet.
"You already know the drill," he flatly instructs, his tone devoid of an ounce of human empathy. "Take slow breaths into the bag and you should be fine."
Without sparing me another glance, he turns his back, steps into the en-suite bathroom, and slams the heavy oak door shut. The metallic click of the lock echoes through the room, leaving me choking, gasping, and writhing on the floor alone.
Hours later, the humiliation and brokenness force me into hiding. I lock myself away in the guest room at the end of the hall for the rest of the agonizing evening. I skip the high-profile gala altogether. My phone buzzes relentlessly on the nightstand, the caller ID flashing his mother's name over and over again, but I ignore it. I am in no state to speak to anyone, let alone the woman who raised the man who just broke me.
Seeking some form of mindless escape from the dark, spiraling thoughts threatening to consume my sanity, I grab the remote and turn on the television. I flip the channel to the live broadcast of the charity gala's red carpet. I sit in the dark, my knees pulled to my chest, morbidly wondering how all these wealthy, elite guests manage to hide their private agonies behind such perfect, pearly smiles.
The screen flashes with blinding camera lights. The reporter chatters endlessly about designer gowns and philanthropic donations.
Suddenly, the camera pans toward the grand entrance. Declan steps onto the glowing screen.
My breath hitches, freezing in my raw throat.
He isn't walking the velvet carpet alone. Clinging tightly to his arm, wearing a radiant, victorious smile that rivals the flashing cameras, is Vanessa. The paparazzi push forward, their flashes exploding in a frantic frenzy, capturing the scandal of the city's most prominent billionaire arriving with his ex-girlfriend instead of his wife.
This is his silent, brutal announcement to the entire world. He is letting high society know that our marriage is crumbling. But the public humiliation isn't what shatters the final, fragile pieces of my heart.
It is the specific way he looks at her.
I watch through the glowing screen as they pause for the photographers. Declan turns toward Vanessa. He reaches down, his large hands moving with profound tenderness, and carefully helps her adjust the heavy train of her expensive silk dress. When she leans up, pressing her body against his to whisper something intimate into his ear, a genuine, blinding joy erupts across his face. He beams. He gazes down at her openly, his eyes soft and unguarded.
He looks exactly like a man deeply and unapologetically in love.
I sit shivering in the dark, watching my husband offer his ex-girlfriend the exact tenderness, patience, and adoration I have desperately yearned for over the last four years. He claimed to my face just hours ago that she wasn't the reason for our sudden divorce. He swore it was about us, about our incompatible dynamic.
But sitting here, watching the undeniable worship in his eyes as he holds her on national television, the devastating clarity finally washes over me. He is either blatantly lying to my face, or he is deeply lying to himself.
Vanessa Thorne is the undeniable reason my marriage is coming to an end. And as I press my hand against my flat stomach, protecting the secret life growing inside me, I know with absolute certainty that Declan will never know about this baby.
