Chapter 3: The Masked Man
~ Kaelen ~
The underground shelter was a claustrophobic cage of sheer panic. Muffled, booming explosions from the surface rattled the thick concrete ceiling, sending clouds of grey dust drifting down onto the terrified, huddled pack members. Kaelen stood frozen in place behind Xavier’s broad back, her heart violently hammering against her bruised ribs. The realization that Soren Ames, the Cursed Alpha, was the one tearing their borders apart sent a paralyzing chill straight down her spine.
"What? We have no choice! We have to fight!" Xavier’s booming voice sliced through the heavy dread filling the bunker. He turned wildly, his eyes wide with frantic desperation. "Jonas, gather all the men who can fight! Move!"
While Xavier and Jonas frantically rallied the available warriors, Kaelen remained completely still. She pressed a trembling hand tightly against her chest, her mind racing with horrific possibilities. Had he finally found her? Was this bloody massacre solely meant to drag his runaway bride back into the hell she had escaped?
"Kaelen! Kaelen!" Xavier’s domineering, harsh voice violently snapped her out of her spiraling thoughts. He closed the distance between them in two long strides and roughly grabbed her arms, shaking her. "Are you just going to stand there? I need you out there right now. I need you to risk your life and fight by my side!"
Before Kaelen could even process his selfish demand, a high-pitched voice echoed from the center of the room.
"I'll fight too!" Daphne announced loudly, stepping forward with an utterly unconvincing look of bravery.
Kaelen and Xavier both whipped their heads to look at her. Kaelen almost scoffed. Getting dirty or breaking a sweat was never Daphne's style, let alone facing a bloodthirsty invading army.
Xavier’s hard expression instantly melted into absolute, sickening devotion. He rushed over to his mistress, gently holding her shoulders. "No, absolutely not. You are pregnant," Xavier pointed out firmly, his tone entirely shifting from demanding to fiercely protective. "You stay completely safe inside this shelter. Protect our unborn child at all costs."
Without missing a beat, Xavier immediately turned his cold, callous gaze back to his actual wife. "Let’s go, Kaelen. Move."
Xavier didn't even wait for her response. He aggressively shoved his way through the steel doors, already shifting into his massive, cinnamon-brown wolf form as he led the frontline warriors toward the bloodbath. He briefly glanced back over his shoulder, his voice echoing loudly in her head through the mindlink. *'Kaelen, are you coming?'*
*'Okay,'* Kaelen replied dryly, keeping her mental walls firmly up.
Just as she took a step toward the exit, a tight grip locked onto her wrist. Adeline abruptly pulled Kaelen away from the chaotic crowd, dragging her into the dimly lit corner of the bunker.
*'Luna Kaelen, listen to me,'* Adeline urgently whispered through the mindlink, her eyes wide with desperate hope. *'This is our ultimate chance. The battle up there is pure, uncontrollable chaos. While the Alpha is utterly distracted fighting for his life, we can use this massive distraction to finally flee this abusive pack. Once we cross a kilometer outside the border, his alpha command won't be able to reach you anymore. You can finally be free.'*
Kaelen gulped hard, her throat suddenly dry. The prospect of immediate escape was incredibly, undeniably tempting. For over a year, she had endured Xavier's cruelty, Daphne's torment, and the suffocating misery of being an unloved Luna. She could just run. She could vanish into the thick woods and never look back.
But just as she was second-guessing her next move, Beta Jonas came sprinting back into the bunker, his face slick with cold sweat. He had been heavily mindlinking with the patrols still trapped above ground.
"Luna!" Beta Jonas shouted, his voice cracking with devastation. "Our eastern borders have completely fallen! Over fifty of the Cursed Alpha’s strongest warriors have ruthlessly infiltrated the perimeter. They have already captured our innocent women and children!"
The absolute horror of Jonas's report hit Kaelen like a physical blow to the chest. The selfish temptation to run instantly evaporated, replaced by a roaring, deep-seated loyalty. She was the true Luna of the Midnight Moon Pack. She refused to abandon her vulnerable people to a brutal slaughter.
"Copy that, Beta Jonas," Kaelen firmly replied, her voice steady and commanding. "I’ll take the east."
"Luna, please wait—" Adeline desperately called out.
Kaelen turned to her loyal friend and rapidly mindlinked back. *'I can’t do it, Addy. I can't just leave them like this. Our innocent people need help. I won't let children die for my freedom. There will be another opportunity for us.'*
Without giving Adeline a chance to argue, Kaelen charged up the concrete stairs and officially shifted. Her clothes tore apart as her bones rapidly expanded and snapped into place. She exploded out of the bunker in her formidable, massive wolf form. Her thick coat was a striking mix of dark grey and aggressive black stripes, with pure white fur lining her belly.
She fought with a lethal, unrestrained ferocity that Xavier had never once witnessed, completely shedding the weak facade she had maintained for so long. She was bigger and faster than most females, her sheer size making her instantly identifiable on the chaotic battlefield. The Midnight Moon warriors who ran beside her howled with sudden, fierce confidence, knowing their true Luna was fiercely leading the charge.
When Kaelen aggressively burst through the tree line and reached the eastern boundary, the sight before her made her blood boil. Six giant, heavily muscled enemy werewolves were violently rounding up a large group of terrified, crying women and children. Two of the massive beasts were continuously growling, violently snapping their bloody teeth at the hostages to keep them perfectly still, while the other four formed a tight, unbreakable barrier.
All around them, over fifty robust, fearless rival werewolves were tearing into the Midnight Moon guards. The air was thick with the coppery stench of blood and the deafening sounds of snapping bones and agonizing screams.
Kaelen didn't hesitate for a single second. She aggressively charged forward, her powerful paws tearing up the bloody earth.
She lunged directly at a massive rival werewolf who was busy pinning down one of her young gammas. With explosive speed and terrifying precision, Kaelen tackled the towering beast, effortlessly toppling him over. Before he could even react, she sank her razor-sharp teeth deep into his hind leg, ripping through muscle and tendon until he howled in absolute agony.
She didn't stop there. Moving like a deadly blur of grey and black, Kaelen aggressively jumped from one enemy to another. She ruthlessly crushed a second enemy's throat with her powerful jaws. She violently swiped her heavy claws across a third one's face, permanently blinding him. Within thirty bloody minutes, she had swiftly and lethally taken down four massive enemy werewolves.
Her stunning, lethal combat prowess completely shifted the dynamic of the eastern front. But her incredible display of raw violence immediately drew heavy, hostile attention.
Very quickly, Kaelen felt the heavy weight of predatory eyes locking onto her. Five rival werewolves slowly broke away from the main fight and entirely surrounded her in a tight circle. They all bared their long, bloodstained fangs, their thick saliva dripping onto the dirt in pure, aggressive anticipation.
Kaelen remained perfectly calm, lowering her front half into a defensive, lethal stance.
*“She is mine,”* one of the massive wolves growled through the open mindlink.
*“No, back off. She is mine,”* another snapped aggressively.
*“I absolutely love a good challenge. Let me tear her apart.”*
*“I like a feisty lady.”*
Each of the surrounding beasts was eager to test her lethal skills. They repeatedly snapped their jaws, aggressively lunging forward an inch at a time to test her reflexes.
But right before the first wolf could strike, a loud, deeply authoritative voice thundered across the bloody clearing.
"No! Stand down. I will fight her!"
The sheer, dominating power in that single command was terrifying. Kaelen watched in absolute shock as all five massive werewolves immediately lowered their heads and submissively retreated. One of them shot Kaelen a frustrated hiss before fully backing away, leaving her entirely alone in the center of the circle.
Kaelen panned her golden wolf eyes toward the source of the commanding voice.
A mysterious, heavily imposing man casually strolled onto the active battlefield. To Kaelen's profound shock, he had clearly chosen to walk into a bloody werewolf war strictly in his human form. He stood incredibly tall, his broad, muscular chest entirely covered in thick, striking bronze armor. A heavy bronze mask completely concealed his face, leaving only the dark slits for his eyes. His long, dark hair blew wildly in the wind. He walked lazily, gracefully closing the distance between them as if he owned the very earth he stepped on.
As the heavily armored man closed in, an incredibly intoxicating, primal scent violently permeated the air, completely overpowering the foul stench of blood. It was a wild, untamed mixture of deep, earthy musk heavily layered with the crisp, distinct scent of falling autumn leaves.
Kaelen flared her nostrils. This man was undeniably a high-ranking werewolf. But he intended to fight her fully in his vulnerable human form?
*'Does this arrogant bastard have a death wish?'* Kaelen mused bitterly.
"What’s the matter?" the masked man suddenly taunted, his deep, rumbling voice vibrating heavily through the battlefield. "Already scared of me?"
Provoked and absolutely furious, Kaelen let out a deafening, savage growl. She aggressively launched her massive wolf body forward, leaping directly at his chest with her heavy claws fully extended, intending to rip his throat out and end the fight instantly.
To her utter shock, the man didn't flinch. Moving with terrifying, unnatural speed, he gracefully sidestepped her lethal attack.
Kaelen landed heavily and immediately pivoted, attacking him again without holding a single ounce of her brutal strength back. She viciously swiped her claws and snapped her jaws repeatedly, but every single lethal blow met thin air. The mysterious warrior effortlessly dodged every strike as if he were simply dancing around a slow, clumsy pup.
Frustrated beyond belief, Kaelen forcefully shifted back into her human form right in front of him. She swung a brutal, heavy punch directly at his masked face. Her knuckles connected with solid bronze, sending a jarring, agonizing shockwave of pain right up her arm.
"Fuck your mask!" Kaelen barked savagely, shaking her stinging hand. "You are a total coward, hiding behind your thick armor! Fight like a real man!"
Her aggressive defiance clearly stung his ego. The masked man heavily tilted his head, his posture shifting from lazy amusement to predatory focus.
He decided to fight back without any restraint.
Before Kaelen could even blink, he lunged. He violently punched her right in the gut, completely knocking the wind out of her lungs. As she doubled over, he brutally grabbed her arms, effortlessly lifting her off her feet. With terrifying, unnatural ease, he violently flipped her over and aggressively slammed her back flat against the bloody earth.
Kaelen gasped for air, completely stunned. She frantically wiggled and violently thrashed her legs, desperately trying to break free. But the man was far too strong. He aggressively pinned her down with a crushing, overwhelming strength that made her feel feather-light and utterly helpless.
"Are you ready to die?" the masked man whispered darkly right beside her ear, his heavy weight suffocating her. "Do you even know who you are fighting? Foolish woman."
Kaelen screamed for help, thrashing wildly against his grip, but no one from her pack came to her aid.
Suddenly, a piercing, high-pitched scream ripped through the chaotic battlefield.
"I want to help! I’ll help you, Luna Kaelen!"
Kaelen violently twisted her neck to look. Her eyes widened in absolute disbelief. Daphne had inexplicably rushed completely out of the underground shelter and was currently running right into the middle of the active, bloody battlefield, screaming at the top of her lungs.
It was absolute suicide.
Instantly, a massive rival werewolf spotted the easy prey. He aggressively leaped forward, viciously mauling Daphne to the ground in seconds. Daphne’s shoulder ripped open, bright red blood rapidly soaking her designer shirt.
"Help! Xavier, help me!" Daphne shrieked in absolute terror.
Xavier appeared entirely out of nowhere. His massive cinnamon-brown wolf violently tackled the attacker, furiously snapping the rival wolf's neck in a desperate, enraged frenzy to save his precious mistress.
While Kaelen watched the sickening display unfold, the masked man kneeling heavily on her back suddenly shifted his grip. He pressed one of his sharp, thick claws dangerously deep into the incredibly vulnerable, soft skin of Kaelen's neck. A thin, hot line of blood immediately trickled down her throat.
"Time to die," the masked man suggested in a raspy, dark tone.
"No!" Kaelen cried out in sheer terror. She locked eyes with her husband across the bloody clearing. "Xavier! Please help me! Help me!"
Instead of rushing to his legitimate wife's aid, Xavier forcefully shifted back into his human form. He completely ignored her desperate cries, frantically dropping to his knees to gently scoop the heavily bleeding Daphne into his protective arms.
Then, Xavier deliberately mindlinked Kaelen. His voice dripped with venomous, hateful disgust.
*'Why the hell would I ever save you? You called Daphne out here to help you! You completely knew she was pregnant! You did this on purpose, you malicious bitch! You lured her out to the active battlefield purely to have her and my unborn child brutally killed! I didn't think you could ever be this twisted and cruel, Kaelen!'*
Kaelen felt her heart completely shatter inside her chest. Desperate and utterly horrified by the twisted, insane accusation, she loudly protested the disgusting lie through the bond.
*'What?!'* Kaelen screamed mentally. *'I did not do such a thing! I never told her to come out here! Whatever the hell she said, she is completely lying to you! Xavier, please, help me!'*
The masked man violently yanked Kaelen's hair back, forcing her face up toward the bloody sky as he pressed his sharp claw even deeper against her skin.
"This is it for you, dearest Luna," the masked man concluded smoothly. "Say your final goodbyes."
"Xavier, please!" Kaelen screamed out loud, completely dropping the mindlink. Tears of absolute betrayal and terror rapidly streamed down her dirty face. "If you don’t believe me, fine! But at least come and save me for the sake of the profound love we once shared! I am still your wife!"
But Xavier coldly and deliberately turned his broad back on her. He held Daphne tightly against his chest, totally abandoning Kaelen to die at the hands of the enemy.
As Xavier rapidly fled the battlefield with his mistress, Daphne suddenly lifted her head from his shoulder. She looked directly at Kaelen, completely dropping her terrified act. Daphne shot Kaelen a highly triumphant, deeply mischievous smirk.
It was all a completely calculated, malicious setup. Daphne had purposefully risked a minor injury just to completely frame Kaelen and guarantee Xavier would abandon her to die.
"Aaahhh!" Kaelen screamed, her chest actively burning as immense, boiling rage violently violently surged through her veins.
"Hahaha!"
The masked man kneeling heavily behind Kaelen suddenly erupted into deep, booming, mocking laughter. The cruel, rumbling sound vibrated straight through her spine. It hit Kaelen with sickening clarity. He wasn't going to slice her throat. He had deliberately kept her completely alive just long enough to force her to witness her own husband’s crushing, cowardly abandonment.
For grueling, agonizing hours, the brutal attack on the Midnight Moon Pack continued without mercy. Kaelen lay completely helpless, her face pressed forcefully into the dirt. All she could hear were the horrific cries, screams of pure terror, and the sickening sound of flesh tearing as her people were systematically slaughtered. Every few minutes, she felt another mental tether violently snap inside her mind—another one of her loyal warriors losing their life.
Consumed by immense guilt and boiling, helpless rage, Kaelen was roughly hauled up and completely bound in heavy, thick silver cuffs and restrictive chains. The cursed metal aggressively burned her bare skin, sending fiery, agonizing jolts deep into her bones. She was thrown forcefully back onto the dirt. The massive masked man casually and disrespectfully sat his heavy weight directly upon her back, literally using her broken body as a mere throne while he watched his men conquer her home.
Finally, as the bloody, dark red sun neared the horizon, the brutal sounds of combat slowly died down.
A fierce, heavily scarred red-haired warrior confidently approached them. He stopped right in front of Kaelen's face and sharply bowed to the man sitting upon her back.
"All surviving prisoners have been successfully gathered in front of the packhouse," the red-haired warrior reported firmly. "We are entirely ready for you, Alpha."
Kaelen’s breath hitched in her bruised throat. Her bloodshot eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror as she slowly processed the heavy title.
The massive man finally rose from her back, lifting his crushing weight off her spine. Kaelen frantically rolled over, the heavy silver chains loudly clanking against the dirt. She tilted her head up, locking her totally terrified, shaking gaze with the piercing, icy blue orbs hidden deep beneath the dark bronze mask.
Shivering uncontrollably from the cold dirt and pure dread, Kaelen barely managed to force the words past her trembling lips. "Are—are you the cursed alpha?"
The masked man lazily scoffs. He stood incredibly tall, looking down at her chained, broken form with absolute, terrifying superiority.
"The one and only."
