The Heartbreaking Restaurant Encounter
CLARA'S POV.
How could I possibly not recognize the very face of the woman who, as my relentlessly cruel sister-in-law has reminded me endlessly throughout my marriage, is Roman’s first and only true love? Seeing her in the flesh, clinging so intimately to my husband's arm, sends an entirely unprecedented wave of intense jealousy crashing violently through me. It is an overwhelming, suffocating heartbreak that grips my entire physical being. I sit completely frozen in my chair, utterly paralyzed, watching the two of them laughing together so effortlessly as they stroll into the bright dining room.
"Oh my God," a quiet, desperate whisper escapes my trembling lips. My vision blurs completely with hot, stinging tears that I refuse to let fall. "That lying, heartless, evil, cheating bastard."
The agonizing tightness in my chest is so severe that I find myself barely able to draw a full breath. My lungs burn as if the air itself has been sucked right out of the room. In an instant, every single piece of Roman’s recent strange and distant behavior makes perfect, devastating sense. The sudden late nights at the office, the emotional detachment, the coldness that seeped into our home. He actively wants to discard me specifically to make room for her. The vibrant chemistry flowing between them is utterly undeniable, practically sparking in the air for everyone to see. In all our three years of marriage, I can painfully recall that he has never once laughed so heartily at absolutely anything I have ever said. With me, he is always composed, rigid, and brutally distant. With her, he is radiant.
Right beside me, Sylvia dramatically rolls her perfectly lined eyes. Her face is instantly illuminated with pure, malicious glee as she leans in closer, savoring my total and utter destruction.
"Oh, please! Don't act so surprised," she venomously spits, her voice dripping with condescension. She cruelly questions me, her tone mocking and sharp. "Did you genuinely believe that a handsome and wealthy man like my brother was ever going to remain shackled to someone like you for the rest of his natural life? It was only a matter of time before this happened."
I can barely even begin to process the toxic venom of her words. Her insults sound muffled, distant, because I am far too consumed by the sheer agony of watching Roman. He confidently steps further into the luxurious restaurant with his beautiful ex clinging affectionately to his side. It is exactly then that his wandering gaze sweeps across the room and catches mine.
He looks momentarily shocked the second his dark eyes land on me sitting right there with his mother and sister. A flicker of genuine panic crosses his handsome features, but he is incredibly quick to mask it entirely. His expression smoothly transitions back to a cool, unreadable mask. Instead of walking toward his legal wife, he flawlessly guides his ex to a separate reserved table across the room. He does it with the incredibly gentle touch of a perfect gentleman, his large, warm hand resting protectively on the small of her back.
Watching this public display of affection feels exactly like a jagged spear being thrust directly into my fragile heart. It twists violently, especially knowing how profoundly rare it is for him to even take me out in public. We have spent years hiding our marriage in the shadows, yet here he is, proudly parading her under the bright crystal chandeliers for the entire world to see.
After ensuring she is comfortably seated, pulling her chair out and whispering something that makes her smile brilliantly, Roman stalks purposefully over to our table. The effortless charm he just displayed vanishes entirely. His jaw is tight, his broad shoulders rigid with underlying tension. He very carefully avoids making any eye contact with me whatsoever, treating me as though I am entirely invisible.
"What are you playing at now, Sylvia?" he demands, his voice tight and clipped. He leans down only to accept a customary, dry kiss on the cheek from his mother, his eyes narrowed at his scheming sister.
Sylvia replies with extreme, coy innocence. "I don't know what you're talking about, brother dear," she says smoothly, casually swirling the expensive wine in her glass. She wishes him a happy birthday while radiating absolute mischief, a wicked, triumphant glint dancing in her eyes.
It is in this exact moment that I finally piece the cruel puzzle together. Sylvia deliberately and maliciously changed my originally chosen dinner venue to this specific high-end restaurant. She fully knew that her best friend would be arriving here tonight with Roman. This was never a last-minute reservation mix-up. This was a highly calculated trap. She is fully prepared to do absolutely anything to cause me maximum emotional pain. It is her twisted way to consistently remind me that I simply do not belong in their upper-class world. I am an outsider, a temporary nuisance finally being taken out with the trash. I am left agonizingly wondering how long Roman and his ex have been seeing each other behind my back, laughing at how profoundly gullible I am.
Then, the ex gracefully approaches our table.
"Good evening, Mrs. Prescott. Good evening, Sylvia. Hello to you," a soft, feminine voice chimes in. That last sentence is directed squarely at me, casual and polite, but it barely registers over the loud ringing in my ears.
Sylvia and her mother immediately jump up from their seats to greet her. Their faces break into ecstatic, beaming smiles. They pull the stunning blonde woman into incredibly tight, affectionate hugs. It is a staggering display of genuine warmth and acceptance—a level of love that I have never once received in all my years of desperately trying to please them. They hold onto her as if she is the missing piece of their family finally returning home.
As the three women begin to whisper excitedly to each other, they physically turn their backs slightly, shutting my presence out entirely. I am made completely invisible, an unwanted ghost haunting their perfect reunion. I glance up and manage to catch Roman watching me closely. He has a highly speculative gaze in his dark eyes, silently studying my pale face and trembling hands, yet he remains completely silent. He offers no defense. He does not claim me. He just stands there and lets them treat me like nothing.
Suffocating intensely under the crushing, unbearable weight of my loneliness, my throat closes up completely. The stark, brutal realization that I will never be truly loved or respected within this family unit hits me like a physical blow to the stomach. I cannot sit here a single second longer and watch them rejoice in my replacement.
I abruptly excuse myself from the table, my voice shaking so badly I barely recognize it. I push my chair back loudly, but none of the three women even bother to look in my direction. I quickly turn on my heel and flee the dining room, desperately needing oxygen.
I push through the heavy glass doors and quickly retreat out into the freezing cold night air. The icy wind immediately whips my hair violently around my tear-stained face, but the physical chill is nothing compared to the freezing ice in my veins. The haunting image of his perfectly beautiful, blonde ex clad in her stunning, expensive dress absolutely refuses to leave my tormented mind. The fabric had been cut just low enough to reveal her ample cleavage, making her look effortlessly glamorous and impossibly sexy. I wrap my thin coat tighter around my trembling shoulders, agonizingly wondering if that is simply the specific kind of woman he truly desires. Am I just too plain? Too boring? Is that why he could never bring himself to touch me with that same tender reverence?
I close my eyes, trying to force the painful image away, trying to focus only on the biting cold air filling my burning lungs.
Suddenly, the distinct whiff of a sweet, heavily feminine perfume wafts directly around me. It cuts right through the crisp night air, thick and intoxicating. I hear the distinct click of the heavy restaurant door as it slowly opens behind me. A second later, I hear her voice echoing in the cold—the exact voice of the woman my husband is still so clearly besotted with.
