The Devastating Divorce Papers
CLARA'S POV
"I want a divorce."
The shattering phrase hung heavily in the dead silence of the room, instantly turning my entire world upside down. I stood completely frozen, my hands beginning to tremble violently as I stared down at the crisp, official divorce papers my husband had just thrust into my grasp. Roman’s face was a mask of sheer indifference, utterly devoid of a single shred of emotion. Even though it had always been glaringly obvious throughout our entire marriage that he did not love me in the profound, fiercely dedicated way that I loved him, absolutely nothing could have prepared my fragile heart for this out-of-the-blue devastation.
Desperate to pretend that those dreaded, marriage-ending words had never crossed his lips, I frantically attempted to cling to the normalcy of our previously made plans. I swallowed hard, fighting the lump in my throat.
"I... I already booked a dinner reservation to celebrate your birthday tonight," I stammered. My voice was trembling so severely that it sounded like it belonged to a complete stranger. "I explicitly told your mother and your sister, and they are scheduled to be there to celebrate with us."
Roman’s response was the absolute epitome of coldness. His dark eyes didn't even soften. He merely adjusted the cuffs of his immaculate suit and firmly replied, "I have an incredibly important business deal to seal at the office tonight. It is unfortunately going to make it impossible for me to attend my own birthday dinner."
He didn't offer an apology. He didn't even flinch. He heartlessly looked down at the documents trembling in my hands and coldly instructed, "Proceed to the dinner with my family without me. Sign the divorce papers you are currently holding, and I verbally promise that you will be very well compensated for your trouble."
Before I could even formulate a single syllable in response, Roman turned abruptly on his heel. The sharp, decisive sound of his footsteps echoed through the hallway as he walked out of the room, leaving me completely abandoned in the center of our bedroom.
Left entirely alone in the suffocating silence, my knees finally gave out. I slowly sank into the nearest chair as the very first wave of bitter, stinging tears spilled over my cheeks. I clutched the papers to my chest, my breathing ragged. I had genuinely, foolishly believed that our marriage was making tangible progress over these past few months. I thought we were finally building something real.
However, before I could truly wallow in the sudden, unexplained, and total destruction of my life, my mobile phone began to ring shrilly, violently cutting through my grief.
I wiped my wet face and glanced at the glowing screen. The caller ID showed my highly critical mother-in-law. Bracing myself, I answered the call.
"Why exactly are you running late?" she immediately demanded, her tone sharp and completely lacking in warmth. "We have spontaneously changed the restaurant venue because we found somewhere far more suitable. I am texting you the new address now."
Feeling completely shattered and utterly incapable of pretending everything was fine, I attempted to excuse myself from the suffocating family gathering. "I am so sorry," I started, my voice wobbling uncontrollably over the line, "but I don't think I can make it tonight. I am feeling incredibly unwell and—"
Before I could finish my desperate plea, I heard a rustle on the other end. My relentless sister-in-law, Sylvia, had aggressively snatched the phone straight from her mother’s hands.
"What absolute nonsense!" Sylvia barked, issuing a tyrannical command that left zero room for argument. "Stop making up pathetic excuses and present yourself at the new venue immediately. We are already here, and we are waiting for you."
The line went dead with a sharp click.
Knowing there was no escaping them without causing an even more catastrophic family incident, I forced myself up. By the time I eventually arrived at the newly designated high-end restaurant, my eyes were visibly red and puffy, a clear, undeniable indication of my recent emotional breakdown. Walking through the luxurious dining room, I deeply dreaded the intense awkwardness of facing Roman's highly judgmental family without him physically present to act as a crucial buffer. They had never once attempted to hide their deep-seated disdain for me, and tonight would clearly be no exception.
True to her usual toxic form, the very moment I approached their lavish table, my mother-in-law's critical eyes immediately dropped and bored straight into my stomach. She sat there, silently and oppressively searching my waistline for a baby bump that simply didn't exist. The silent accusation in her glare was suffocating.
I swallowed the massive lump of pain rising in my throat, taking my seat across from them. "Roman sends his sincere apologies," I forced myself to say, keeping my gaze steady despite the heartbreak tearing me apart from the inside. "He will not be able to make it tonight due to an urgent work commitment."
Upon hearing my perfectly rehearsed excuse, Sylvia instantly flashed a profoundly smug and deeply mischievous smile. She leaned back in her chair, swirling the expensive wine in her glass.
"Oh, don't worry about it," Sylvia stated mockingly, her eyes gleaming with a cruel amusement I couldn't quite decipher. "We know perfectly well just how busy he is."
A mere twenty minutes later, while I was sitting quietly at the table with a perfectly clear, unobstructed view of the restaurant's grand main entrance, the sinister and cruel meaning behind Sylvia's smug smile became agonizingly clear.
The heavy glass doors swung open. I initially thought my tear-filled, exhausted eyes must absolutely be deceiving me. I blinked hard, praying it was just a hallucination brought on by the immense stress of the evening. But the tall, familiar figure casually walking through the restaurant doors was undeniably my soon-to-be ex-husband.
He was clearly not at the office sealing a massive business deal as he had coldly claimed to me just an hour ago. He wasn't dressed for a boardroom either. Instead, he looked relaxed, handsome, and entirely engrossed in the person beside him.
Hanging tightly onto his arm, laughing brightly at something he had just said, was a stunningly beautiful woman. I had never actually met her in person, but my brain recognized her instantaneously from the countless old photographs I had secretly stumbled upon over the years. My already completely shattered heart took a massive, physically painful plunge straight to the very soles of my feet, leaving me breathless and nauseous. I stared at the way she looked at him, and the way he leaned into her touch.
I was absolutely certain of it in my core—it was her.
