The Contract
The heavy, carved double doors of the ballroom slammed shut behind us, instantly cutting off the stifling, chaotic atmosphere and the lingering whispers of the stunned crowd. Alpha Gideon moved with predatory swiftness, leading Maisie and me down the quiet, dimly lit corridors of the massive estate. Maisie’s small, incredibly warm hand clung fiercely to my right hand, while her left gripped her father’s massive fingers.
My mind was reeling. The grand, opulent hallway blurred around me as my thoughts spun completely out of control, violently anchored to one impossible, earth-shattering image: the distinct crescent moon birthmark on the delicate skin at the back of Maisie’s neck.
Could she really be her?
Could this bright, beautiful little girl actually be the fragile, tiny daughter I lost so many years ago?
The terrifying idea thrilled and horrified me in equal, devastating measure. My memory viciously dragged me back to that sterile, freezing room in the NICU. I could practically hear the relentless, terrifying rhythm of the heart monitors. I could still smell the sharp, chemical burn of the hospital antiseptic. I could still vividly see the agonizing pity in the doctor's tired eyes. I had memorized every single millimeter of that tiny, perfectly shaped curve on my newborn’s delicate skin right before they delivered the world-shattering news that my child was gone forever. It was a grief that had hollowed out my chest, leaving a gaping void that nothing had ever been able to fill.
It made absolutely no logical sense. How could our powerful, untouchable Alpha have stolen my child? Why would he? The questions clawed frantically at my brain, demanding answers I simply didn't have. Yet, the undeniable, magnetic bond I felt with this sweet little girl pulled fiercely at my heart with every single passing second. My instincts—raw, primal, and totally undeniable—were screaming at the top of their lungs that she belonged to me.
Beside me, Maisie was completely oblivious to the massive internal war raging inside my chest. She bounced excitedly alongside us as we walked down the sprawling, quiet corridors, her delicate party shoes tapping out a joyful rhythm on the polished marble floors.
"I gave Tessa the dress!" she proudly told Gideon, entirely unbothered by his looming, intimidating presence. She swung my hand happily, her face glowing. "It's way too pretty to just sit in a dark closet forever! Besides, I like her—I want her!"
I flinched slightly at her innocent, blunt declaration. Gideon’s forceful footsteps slowed. He looked down at his daughter, his expression hardening into a stern mask.
"You’re too quick to trust a stranger, Maisie," Gideon reprimanded gently but firmly. His piercing gaze flicked up over her head and slammed directly into mine. His eyes were cold, calculating, and filled with deep, unmistakable suspicion. It was a silent, lethal warning.
But Maisie was completely undeterred by his imposing Alpha authority. She aggressively tugged at his large hand, planting her small feet firmly on the carpeted floor. "Well, I don’t care!" she announced, her bright blue eyes blazing with stubborn defiance. "The Mate Trial is to find me a new mommy, right? Well, I like Tessa the very best!"
She dropped his hand entirely and wrapped both of her little arms tightly around my waist, hugging me fiercely. "She’s kind, beautiful, and she doesn’t care who you are, Daddy. She’s the mommy I’ve been looking for!"
Her pure, innocent words tore violently at my heart. My fierce, desperate hope instantly tangled with sheer, suffocating fear of the Alpha's reaction. I awkwardly rested my shaking hand on her dark hair, silently begging her to be careful.
Gideon actively pretended to be unfazed by his daughter's shocking declaration, but his towering frame grew visibly tense. A tight muscle feathered dangerously in his sharp jawline. He didn't say a single word to me. Instead, he immediately signaled a passing maid who was hovering nervously near a decorative stone pillar with a sharp, commanding gesture.
"Please take Maisie to her room," he commanded, his deep voice vibrating with an authority that left zero room for argument. "She’s had enough excitement for one night."
"But Dad!" Maisie whined, her lower lip jutting out in a heavy pout.
"Bed. Now," he stated.
Maisie sighed heavily, finally letting go of my waist. She looked up at me with large, pleading eyes. Ignoring the burning gaze of the Alpha, I knelt down right there in the middle of the grand hallway, bringing myself perfectly level with her sweet face.
"Goodnight, Tessa," she whispered softly. She threw her arms around my neck, pulling me into a lingering, incredibly warm hug. The smell of vanilla and sweet strawberries radiated off her skin, making my chest ache with a sudden, overwhelming protectiveness.
"Goodnight, Maisie," I murmured softly into her hair, fighting back the sudden burn of tears in my eyes. I pulled back just enough to look directly into her eyes. "I promise we'll have a special butterfly tea party in the gardens tomorrow. We can even bring your absolute favorite snacks."
Her face instantly lit up, a brilliant smile entirely chasing away her disappointment. "Really? With real tea and the good cups?"
"Absolutely," I playfully joked, shooting a quick, daring glance up at her imposing father. "And your serious, brooding father can play the role of the big bad wolf."
Maisie let out a bright, ringing giggle that echoed beautifully down the long hall. Gideon shifted impatiently, his massive chest rising and falling with a heavy breath, though he gently placed a large hand on her shoulder to hurry her off to bed.
"Okay, okay," Maisie said brightly. "Goodnight!"
She waved happily before following the maid, her small, energetic figure slowly disappearing down the curving, shadowed hallway. I watched her until she was completely out of sight. When I finally stood back up and turned around, Gideon was standing entirely alone with me. His jaw was locked tight, his expression completely unreadable, and the heavy silence between us was absolutely deafening.
A little while later, the magical, Cinderella-like illusion of the evening was completely stripped away. I had been escorted back to a modest guest bedroom where I nervously changed out of the breathtaking, priceless gown. I carefully unzipped the silk, letting the heavy, luxurious fabric pool at my feet like liquid silver. Slipping back into my worn, faded jeans and a plain cotton t-shirt felt like a brutal reality check. The heavy silk had felt like a protective armor; my everyday street clothes made me feel incredibly exposed, reminding me that I was just a heavily indebted woman caught in a terrifying world of billionaires and powerful wolves.
Before I could even process my racing thoughts, a stern guard knocked on my door and summoned me.
Now, I found myself standing nervously in the center of Gideon’s imposing, dimly lit, book-lined study. The massive room smelled intensely of aged paper, rich tobacco, and the sharp, overwhelming pine scent of his commanding Alpha aura. Three entire walls were covered floor-to-ceiling with tightly packed bookshelves. A massive stone fireplace dominated the remaining wall, casting dancing, menacing shadows across the room.
Gideon sat comfortably behind a massive, dark oak desk in a plush, expensive leather office chair. I, on the other hand, was explicitly relegated to an incredibly uncomfortable, rigid wooden seat positioned squarely in front of him. It was a stiff, unforgiving chair clearly designed to pull rank, strip away any sense of comfort, and make the occupant feel incredibly small.
His entire demeanor was just as unforgiving and rigid as the wood aggressively biting into my spine. He stared at me in total silence for several agonizing seconds, letting the oppressive weight of his authority slowly crush the oxygen out of the room.
Without any warning, he violently slammed a thick, heavily bound document across his massive desk. The sharp crack made me physically jump in my seat.
"I don’t trust you," he stated coldly, his deep voice entirely devoid of any warmth or mercy. "I genuinely believe you deliberately approached Maisie with ulterior motives."
I opened my mouth, but he held up a single, commanding finger, his eyes flashing with raw danger.
"I may indulge my daughter’s innocent whims," he continued, his tone dripping with absolute disdain. "I let her play her little games tonight because it brought her joy. But that does absolutely not mean I will extend that same foolish courtesy to you. You are playing a dangerous game in my house."
Caught completely off guard by the vicious, baseless accusation, I leaped up from the uncomfortable wooden chair. My hands balled into tight, shaking fists at my sides.
"I don’t have any bad intentions toward Maisie!" I fired back, my heart pounding violently against my ribs. "I just want to care for her. I like her. I would never—"
He ruthlessly cut me off by grabbing another set of crisp, white papers from his desk and throwing them directly at me. The pages scattered wildly across the polished oak wood, a few sliding off the edge to flutter to the expensive rug below.
I flinched backward, my eyes dropping to the scattered papers. I fully expected a payoff. A fat, legally binding bribe with a massive check attached, explicitly demanding I walk away from his sprawling estate, abandon the ridiculous Mate Trial, and never speak a single word to his daughter ever again.
A few days ago, before this absolute madness started, I might have eagerly snatched it up. I desperately needed the cash to pay off my crushing debts and escape the brutal loan sharks. I would have taken the money and ran without looking back.
But that was before tonight. That was before I felt her tiny hand in mine. After seeing that familiar, impossible crescent-shaped birthmark on Maisie's delicate skin, there was absolutely no way in hell I was leaving this estate. I would fight tooth and nail, challenging the Alpha himself if I had to, until I knew the indisputable, undeniable truth about her parentage.
"Please, Alpha, you have to let me explain," I pleaded, my voice cracking under the intense, suffocating pressure of his dark, unyielding gaze. "You don't understand—"
"Read," Gideon commanded coldly, his icy eyes boring straight through my soul before I could even finish my desperate sentence.
I swallowed hard, the sudden lump in my throat feeling like a jagged rock. My hands were visibly shaking as I slowly reached down and reluctantly flipped open the heavy cover of the main document he had slammed down first.
I blinked rapidly, trying to clear my suddenly blurred vision. My eyes locked onto the bold, legally binding title emblazoned across the very top of the first page. The stark black ink stared mockingly back at me, flipping my entire world completely upside down for the second time tonight.
"A…mate contract??"
