The Ball
My heart thundered wildly against my ribs as I stood hesitantly outside the grand ballroom for the highly anticipated Mate Trial masquerade. The heavy, ornate double doors loomed in front of me, acting as a physical barrier between my suffocating current reality and the salvation I so desperately craved. Wearing a delicate, crystal-beaded mask that pressed coolly against my flushed skin, and the breathtaking borrowed gown my mother had crafted all those years ago, I felt a heavy mixture of awe and sheer terror. The thousands of intricate beads caught the dim light of the hallway, shimmering with every anxious breath I took. I desperately hoped that Alpha Gideon wouldn't recognize me from our unfavorable, tense first meeting. We had gotten off to a remarkably rocky start in his study, and I could not afford for his lingering irritation to ruin this night for me.
I absolutely needed to win this contest. The staggering $100,000 prize money was my one and only hope to finally clear my crushing, suffocating medical debts that had been drowning me for years. More importantly, that money was my sole ticket to hiring a private investigator to find my missing child. Every crystal bead on my beautiful gown felt like a desperate prayer for the baby that had been stolen from me. I had to push the memory of her tiny, fragile cries out of my head just to keep my legs from giving out.
From near the back of the line of desperate girls, I could hear the loud, obnoxious laughter of my stepsister, Blair. She was obviously plotting to be the absolute last girl to enter the ballroom, fully convinced that a delayed arrival would make the best, most dramatic impression on the Alpha.
The massive doors finally swung open, revealing a glittering expanse of polished marble and glowing chandeliers. I took a deep, shaky breath and nervously descended the grand sweeping staircase. The moment my heel touched the first step, Gideon’s icy blue eyes instantly locked onto me from all the way across the room. He was standing at the foot of the stairs, looking impossibly tall and commanding in a meticulously tailored black suit that perfectly accentuated his broad, muscular shoulders. His dark hair was styled with effortless precision, and he radiated a lethal, terrifying Alpha presence that made the air in the room feel instantly heavier.
He completely ignored the flock of other desperate girls descending the stairs around me. As each one paraded down in their glittering, expensive gowns, he barely offered them a passing glance. His intense, laser-focused stare remained entirely on me. Even when Blair made her appearance, he didn't care. I watched out of the corner of my eye as he barely even cast a passing glance at my seething, over-dressed stepsister during her own overly dramatic grand entrance. She was practically suffocating in a tight, emerald-green mermaid dress, and her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury when she realized she had been entirely overlooked. I knew she was flicking an accusing glare in my direction, even if my crystal mask kept my true identity hidden from her for now.
Later in the evening, after the initial grand entrances had concluded, I found myself standing awkwardly near the edge of the polished dance floor. An older woman was prattling on beside me about the incredible opportunity of the Mate Trial, but I could hardly focus on a single word she was saying. Suddenly, the sea of masked guests naturally parted. The crowd literally moved out of the way as Gideon strode with predatory purpose directly toward me.
'May I have this dance?' he asked. His voice was a low rumble that vibrated right through my chest, leaving absolutely no room for refusal. Before I could even formulate a polite response, he reached out, firmly pulling me onto the polished dance floor.
The physical tension between us grew instantly palpable as we spun to the classical music in a heavy, charged silence. The heat of his large hand burned through the delicate fabric at my waist, and his icy blue eyes searched my masked face with a relentless intensity. I followed his flawless lead, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribcage.
Then, as the string quartet's music swelled to a dramatic crescendo, he leaned in dangerously close. His warm breath hit the sensitive skin of my ear, sending a sudden shiver down my spine as he hissed venomously, 'How dare you wear my mother’s dress?'
The accusation struck me like a physical blow. Before I could even process the shock that the beautiful dress I was wearing actually belonged to his late mother, he aggressively spun me out. My arm fully extended, the skirt of the gown flaring out in a massive, sparkling dome. A split second later, he violently yanked me back in until our masked faces were mere inches apart. The sheer force of his movement stole the breath right from my lungs.
I steadied my trembling legs, refusing to let his immense Alpha aura crush me. I forced myself to meet his furious, narrowed gaze head-on. 'Keeping it locked away in a dusty display case is where the dress goes to die,' I replied calmly, my voice shockingly steady despite the absolute chaos erupting in my chest. I refused to back down from him. 'It deserves to be lived in. It deserves to be appreciated.'
For a long, agonizing second, I thought he was going to throw me out of the ballroom right then and there. But then, his dangerously sharp grip on my waist suddenly softened. The rigid, terrifying anger began fading from his broad shoulders, replaced by a look of deep, contemplative surprise.
'You’re bold,' he muttered, his tone shifting into something entirely unreadable as his eyes traced the intricate beadwork of the bodice. 'My mother would’ve liked that. She did always think the pieces she had made should be lived in, not hidden away in the dark.'
I blinked behind my mask, genuinely taken aback by the sudden, profound vulnerability in his voice. Before I could respond, he dipped me flawlessly, holding my weight with effortless strength. As he pulled me back up, a faint, unexpected smirk tugged at the corner of his handsome lips. He offered a gruff compliment on my dancing and the way the gown suited me, though he quickly admitted he didn't quite remember me from the previous trial meeting due to the mask hiding my features.
My confidence slowly returning, I playfully countered, 'Well, maybe that just goes to show that first impressions aren't always the greatest indicator of a person's worth.'
'Perhaps,' he mused, his icy eyes practically glowing under the chandelier lights.
As the final notes of the classical dance ended, the atmosphere between us still thick with unresolved tension, Gideon swiftly and effortlessly reached up. His fingers brushed against my temples, and in one fluid motion, he removed my crystal mask.
'It's you,' he said, his eyes narrowing sharply with sudden, striking recognition.
My stomach plummeted straight to the floor. All the playful banter and the fragile connection we had just built vanished into thin air. Between our incredibly rocky start in his study and the sheer, unforgivable audacity of stealing his late mother's preserved dress, my fragile chances at the prize money felt utterly, permanently destroyed. He was glaring at me now, the pieces of the puzzle violently snapping together in his mind.
Suddenly, Blair’s furious, shrill voice cut violently through the elegant air, shattering the tense silence between the Alpha and me.
'Tessa!' She stormed over, her face twisted in absolute rage, finally realizing that Gideon had completely slighted her grand entrance for me. She pushed past two wealthy dignitaries, her green mermaid dress swishing aggressively as she marched onto the dance floor.
But before she could unleash her physical attack and humiliate me in front of the entire pack, a small, familiar hand grabbed mine and hoisted it triumphantly into the air.
'I declare Tessa the winner!' Maisie squealed brightly, jumping up and down beside me in her adorable white dress with a matching bow in her hair.
Blair stopped dead in her tracks, her face twisting in absolute, ugly disbelief at the sight of the little girl interrupting her moment of vengeance. 'Who gave you the authority to make decisions for Alpha Gideon, you little brat?! You’re just a worthless mutt!' she shrieked, entirely losing all sense of control and decorum.
The entire grand ballroom fell into a stunned, suffocating, dead silence. Even the live string band abruptly stopped playing mid-note. The clinking of champagne glasses ceased entirely. The collective gasp from the crowd sucked all the oxygen out of the room.
Gideon slowly turned away from me. He leveled a murderous, terrifying glare directly at Blair that promised pure, unadulterated violence. The heavy, oppressive weight of his Alpha aura slammed down on the room, forcing several weaker wolves to their knees.
'Who exactly are you calling a mutt’s daughter?' his voice boomed, dripping with deadly Alpha command that vibrated off the crystal chandeliers.
The color instantly drained from Blair's heavily made-up face as the horrific realization of who the little girl actually was finally hit her. She had just insulted the Alpha's only child in front of the entire pack. Stumbling aggressively back in shock and sheer terror, her high heels catching on the hem of her ridiculous green dress, she gasped out a pathetic, trembling apology. Without waiting for a response, she turned and fled the ballroom in utter disgrace, practically shoving her way through the parted crowd to escape Gideon's wrath.
I stood frozen in place, watching the chaotic scene unfold with an undeniable bit of glee warming my chest. Blair had finally dug her own grave. But as the murmurs of the crowd slowly began to rise again, my mind began racing a mile a minute. Maisie was still firmly holding my hand, her bright blue eyes shining up at me with pure adoration. Had I actually just won the contest? Did her innocent declaration mean I had secured the $100,000 prize? Was I finally going to be able to hire the investigator?
I smiled down warmly at Maisie, an immense wave of gratitude swelling in my chest for the sweet, incredibly brave girl. She had stepped in right when I needed a lifeline. But as I crouched down slightly to meet her eye level and looked closely at her, something specific caught my eye.
There, on the delicate skin at the very back of her neck, partially hidden by her dark hair and the white ribbon of her bow, was a faint crescent moon birthmark.
The blood roared in my ears, drowning out the ambient noise of the ballroom. I stared at the small, perfectly shaped curve on her skin. It was perfectly, undeniably identical to the unique mark my own baby had when she was born in the sterile, beeping room of the NICU. I had memorized every single millimeter of that mark before they told me my child was gone.
My breath hitched painfully in my throat, feeling like a handful of crushed glass tearing at my windpipe. The grand, glittering room began violently spinning around me. My vision blurred as I stared down at the sweet, smiling face of the Alpha's daughter.
Could Maisie actually be my lost daughter?
