No Rules But Mine

The imposing man in the perfectly tailored burgundy suit waited in absolute, suffocating silence. He had asked a question, and his piercing pale grey eyes made it terrifyingly clear that he fully expected an answer.

Elena swallowed the thick, jagged lump of terror lodged firmly in her throat. She managed a jerky, hesitant nod, entirely unable to meet his intense, calculating gaze. She kept her eyes glued to the expensive, polished leather of his shoes, her battered body trembling violently under the heavy weight of his dominant presence.

"And your name is?" he asked, his deep baritone voice slicing effortlessly through the tense quiet of the sterile counting room.

"Elena," she managed to reply. Her voice came out as a thin, fragile whisper, completely devoid of the fierce defiance she had tried so hard to project just moments ago.

"Elena Kovak?" he asked. The way the syllables rolled smoothly off his tongue was mesmerizing. Her own name had never sounded so strangely beautiful, so dark and rich, and the bizarre realization actually surprised her. For a split second, she was so caught off guard she almost forgot to nod.

"My name is Viktor Volkov," he calmly introduced himself, extending a large, impeccably manicured hand toward her.

The name hit her chest with the devastating force of a speeding freight train. Her eyes instantly snapped up to his face, widening in sheer, unadulterated panic. *Oh God. No. Not him. Please, anyone but him,* her mind screamed hysterically. Every single breathing soul who lived within a hundred-mile radius of this city knew that terrifying name. Viktor Volkov was the undisputed don of the largest mafia syndicate in the state. He was the head of the family, the ultimate boss, the apex predator. He was a modern-day Al Capone, a ruthless kingpin whose massive empire was built on blood, broken bones, and absolute power.

Observing her mounting terror with a clinical, almost fascinated eye, a slow, dark smile curved his handsome lips. "You have heard of me," he noted. He sounded deeply satisfied by the sheer horror bleeding into her expression.

Elena nodded frantically. Her panicked, adrenaline-fueled brain spun wildly out of control, calculating a thousand horrific ways this night was about to end.

"Calm down, dove," Viktor murmured softly. He closed the short distance between them and gently placed a heavy, warm hand on her trembling shoulder. His long fingers spanned the delicate curve of her collarbone, and his thumb drifted inward, coming to rest dangerously close to her vulnerable throat. One squeeze. Just a fraction of pressure from that massive, powerful hand, and she would be choking on her own breath. Yet, bizarrely, the firm, grounding weight of his palm anchored her spiraling mind, pulling her out of her sheer panic.

"That’s a good girl. You and I need to have a talk," he stated.

Even through the suffocating haze of her fear, her mind fiercely objected to being patronizingly called a girl. It irritated her, a tiny spark of rebellious anger flaring beneath the terror.

Viktor shifted his grip, his hand sliding up to firmly tilt her chin to the side. He leaned in, his pale eyes meticulously inspecting the severe, dark bruise blooming angrily across her cheekbone, before his gaze dropped to her split, swollen lip.

"Who hit you?" he asked, his voice dropping to a soft, lethal whisper.

Exhausted, battered, and running on nothing but pure, unfiltered adrenaline for the past two hours, her brain completely bypassed whatever remained of her better judgment. "Mr. Pips," Elena blurted out before she could physically clamp her teeth shut.

She instantly wanted to curse her wandering, fractured thoughts. She needed to stay sharply focused to survive, but the utter physical exhaustion was making her dangerously careless.

Viktor let out a sudden burst of deep, chest-rumbling laughter. Even in her hyper-vigilant, terrified state, Elena’s mind helplessly registered the raw, undeniable sexiness of the sound. Her stomach did a strange, unwanted flip as a faint dimple momentarily appeared in Viktor’s sharp, rugged cheek. The towering mafia boss was pure, undiluted magnetism wrapped in a three-piece suit.

"Mr. Pips, huh? I like the name," he smiled down at her.

But the amusement died just as quickly as it had appeared. His pale grey eyes darkened, the temperature in the room plummeting as his mood abruptly shifted into something incredibly serious and razor-sharp. He was giving her emotional whiplash with how fast he could cycle from charming to lethal.

"He will pay for that," Viktor promised, a dark, violent edge slicing through his tone. "My syndicate does not hurt women."

Elena desperately wanted to snort right in his incredibly handsome face. She stared at him in blatant, silent disbelief. Who the hell did he think he was fooling? Just an hour ago, she had watched her own aunt get brutally beaten, bound, and gagged with a split lip. Elena herself had been violently ambushed in her own home, kidnapped in the dead of night, held at gunpoint, and shoved into this back room where two of his monstrous thugs had actively threatened to rape her. She had never been this utterly terrified in her entire life, and this monster had the absolute audacity to stand there and claim his organization didn't hurt women?

Viktor caught her silent, burning accusation perfectly. He seemed highly amused by her blatant skepticism. "You don't believe me?" he asked, a knowing glint in his eye.

Elena swallowed hard, wondering how he could read her mind so effortlessly. It was deeply unsettling, making her feel even more exposed and vulnerable under his piercing gaze. She offered a stiff, noncommittal shrug.

"Let's go somewhere a little more relaxing," he decided smoothly. He reached out, placing a firm, guiding hand on the curve of her waist to physically lead her out of the sterile corner of the counting room.

The moment his large hand clamped onto her body, Elena’s fear spiked violently. Her survival instincts kicked in, and she instinctively jerked away, struggling against his solid grip.

Viktor didn't let go. He simply stopped, looking down at her with a dark, calculated smirk. "Elena, I won't hurt you. But we must talk. Now, you can come with me voluntarily, or you can come kicking and screaming over my shoulder. Though, I have to admit, that might actually be a lot more fun."

Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She stared into his cold, pale eyes and knew he wasn't bluffing. She didn't like either of the options, but she knew exactly what a man of his brutal reputation was capable of doing. She had spent countless nights in the ER meticulously stitching up the gruesome, bloody consequences of his gang's violence. Reluctantly, the fight drained out of her stiff shoulders. She submitted, hesitantly walking past him toward the heavy steel door.

"Spoilsport," he whispered right against her ear, the sudden warmth of his breath making her violently jump. He chuckled darkly, placing his hand flat against the small of her back to expertly steer her forward.

They walked in the opposite direction down the stark white corridor from where Elena had originally been dragged in. As they moved deeper into the massive building, the heavy, rhythmic thumping of club bass grew steadily louder, vibrating through the floorboards and rattling her teeth.

Viktor swiped a black access card, unlocked the heavy double doors at the end of the hallway, and pushed them open.

A massive wall of sound, blinding light, and crushing human heat instantly slammed into Elena. They had stepped out onto the main floor of the packed nightclub. Strobing neon lights violently slashed through the smoke-filled air, the deafening music blasted aggressively from towering speakers, and a dense, sweaty sea of bodies writhed together in a compact mass on the dance floor. Elena froze in the doorway, completely overwhelmed by the sheer, thumping chaos of the environment.

She looked out at the hundreds of intoxicated people. Knowing exactly who the towering man standing right behind her was, a horrifying realization crushed any lingering hope in her chest. Absolutely no one in this massive, crowded room would dare risk their own life to help her. If she screamed, they would look the other way. If she ran, they would step aside. Everyone knew that crossing Viktor Volkov meant a guaranteed death sentence.

"Move," Viktor ordered, his voice cutting effortlessly through the deafening bass.

She had no other choice. She forced her shaking legs forward, stepping out into the chaotic crowd. As they walked, the packed masses did something entirely unnatural. The moment the clubgoers caught sight of Viktor's imposing figure, the dense sea of bodies immediately scrambled backward. They parted for him in absolute, terrified reverence, as if he were Moses parting the Red Sea. He steered her flawlessly with subtle movements of his large body right behind hers. Elena had never encountered someone with this level of terrifying, absolute dominance. He made her utterly terrified and strangely hyper-aware at the same time, and she deeply hated him for it.

He guided her to a discreet, heavily guarded door on the far side of the club, using his card and a rapid access code to unlock it. Behind it was a quiet, private stairway.

Elena didn't need Viktor to tell her to start climbing. She dragged her exhausted body up the carpeted steps until they reached a small landing on the third floor. Viktor guided her toward the door on the left, unlocking it and pushing it open to let her step inside first.

The contrast was instantly jarring. The moment the heavy door clicked shut behind them, the deafening, thumping chaos of the nightclub was entirely erased, reduced to a barely audible hum by the aggressively soundproofed walls.

It was an expansive, ultra-modern office. A massive floor-to-ceiling window dominated the left wall, giving Viktor a god-like view over the strobing nightclub below. In front of the glass sat a brutalist desk—a massive slab of black marble resting on a heavy brass sphere, flanked by a sideways black marble obelisk that looked more like a modern art installation than practical furniture. Against the inner wall sat two sleek black leather couches and a pair of solitary leather armchairs, separated by a glass coffee table resting on a delightfully soft, cream-colored rug. Beside the door stood a towering bookcase with a built-in wet bar.

"Have a seat," Viktor commanded smoothly, gesturing toward the seating area.

Elena kept her distance. She deliberately bypassed the intimate couches and chose to sit in one of the solitary leather armchairs. As she sank into the plush material, an overwhelming, crushing wave of exhaustion washed over her. Her muscles ached, her bones felt incredibly heavy, and she had to desperately fight the urge to just close her eyes and drift off in the incredibly comfortable chair.

"Do you want something to drink?" Viktor asked casually, walking over to the bar and pouring a generous measure of amber whiskey into a heavy crystal tumbler.

"No, thank you," Elena replied quickly. Her brain was already swimming in terror, physical pain, and crashing adrenaline; introducing alcohol into her battered system would be absolute suicide. She desperately needed every single functioning part of her brain that was left.

"Water?" he offered, pausing with the glass in his hand.

Elena hesitated. She desperately wanted water. Spending the last two hours screaming, crying, and hyperventilating had left her throat feeling like raw sandpaper. But a spike of paranoia hit her—what if he slipped a drug into the bottle? She glanced around the isolated, heavily soundproofed room and almost let out a hysterical laugh at her own stupidity. Why would Viktor Volkov need to drug her? She was completely trapped, utterly vulnerable, and entirely at his mercy. If the giant mafia don wanted to overpower her, there wasn't a damn thing she could do to stop him.

"Yes, please," she finally croaked.

Viktor’s lips twitched in amusement. He opened a sleek mini-fridge hidden in the cabinetry, pulled out a chilled plastic bottle of water, and walked over. Instead of sitting on the couch, he sat down directly opposite her on the edge of the low coffee table, his large knees mere inches from hers. He handed her the cold bottle.

"Thank you," she muttered, gripping the freezing plastic like a lifeline.

Viktor tilted his head, studying her pale, bruised face intensely. "Are you always this polite?"

"Since I have never been kidnapped before, I'm not entirely up to speed on the required social protocol," Elena replied, her voice trembling slightly. "But I figure avoiding agitating my kidnapper is a fairly wise move."

The moment the words left her mouth, she instantly wanted to bite her own tongue off. She badly needed to fix her nonexistent brain-to-mouth filter. Why was she violently sassing a mafia boss?

To her shock, Viktor let out a rich, dark chuckle. He seemed genuinely entertained by her blunt honesty. Elena quickly uncapped the bottle and chugged half the freezing water in one desperate, continuous gulp, trying to drown her own stupidity.

Viktor took a slow sip of his whiskey, his pale eyes never leaving her face. "Is that why I need to buy a new bill counter?" he asked smoothly, bringing up the expensive equipment she had violently smashed in her desperate bid to escape his men.

Elena bristled, her grip on the water bottle tightening. "That was entirely different," she defended fiercely. "They were going to..."

Her voice suddenly wavered, trailing off into a horrifying silence. She physically couldn't finish the sentence. Her throat clamped shut, completely unable to force the horrific word *rape* past her bruised lips. The mere thought of what those two thugs were about to do to her made her stomach heave violently.

Dark, visceral memories aggressively flashed through her mind. All those shattered, traumatized women she had treated in the ER. The bruised thighs, the torn clothes, the blank, dead stares as she held their shaking hands while doctors took invasive photographs and performed agonizing swab kits. Just an hour ago, Elena had been terrifyingly close to becoming one of those broken women on the examination table.

Viktor watched the raw, naked trauma flood her expressive face. The faint amusement entirely vanished from his striking features. His expression hardened into something genuinely cold, unforgiving, and incredibly dangerous. Elena tensed up instantly, her heart stuttering as she quickly looked away from his lethal gaze.

"Your family owes me a massive amount of money, Elena," he stated bluntly, seamlessly shifting the conversation into a terrifying new territory.

Elena gulped hard, her racing heart pounding against her ribs. "No," she corrected him, her voice shaking but defiant. "My uncle owes you money. At least, you say he does."

The absolute steel in Viktor’s voice was unmistakable. It cut through the quiet room like a straight razor. "Are you calling me a liar?"

"No," Elena pleaded, her knuckles turning white around the plastic bottle. "I'm just saying I know absolutely nothing about this."

Viktor leaned forward slightly, his imposing presence eating up all the oxygen in her personal space. "Your uncle Janko has a severe taste for poker. Unfortunately for him, he is phenomenally bad at it. The regular casinos in town barred him from playing a long time ago, so he has been a regular fixture at my underground tables."

A nauseating, sinking dread pooled heavily in Elena's stomach. His words carried an undeniable ring of truth. She knew perfectly well that her uncle had a deeply destructive gambling problem in the past. But he had sworn to her that he stopped playing. For some horrific reason, she believed the lethal mafia don sitting in front of her far more than she believed her own blood. That meant Janko had completely lied to her face.

But the sheer injustice of the situation made her blood boil, temporarily overriding her absolute terror. "And you just let him keep playing?" she objected, disgust lacing her trembling tone. "The other casinos barred him because he is a degenerate gambler! That was the right thing to do!"

Viktor smiled. It wasn't the sexy, amused smirk from earlier. It was a cold, ruthless, terrifying smile of an apex predator looking at its prey.

"Dove, I am not running a charity or a daycare," he reminded her softly, the absolute cruelty of his dark world bleeding into his smooth baritone. "If a visitor wants to play cards, who am I to stop them? In my world, there are absolutely no rules except for mine. And you should know by now that my rules only ever work in my favor."

Elena stared into his icy grey eyes, and the final, horrifying pieces of the puzzle violently snapped together in her mind. Her uncle's massive, insurmountable debt. The thugs breaking into her home and dragging her away in the dead of night. The way they had appraised her physical body before Viktor walked in. A terrifying, inescapable conclusion crystallized in her mind, turning the blood in her veins to absolute ice.

She looked at the dangerous mafia don sitting inches away from her, her entire body trembling violently as she forced the devastating words out.

"Did your men take me as payment? Are you planning to sell my body to pay off his debt?"
