Enter the Don

Viktor strode with heavy, purposeful steps through the exclusive upper level of his nightclub, his jaw set in a tight line of pure irritation. Niko had summoned him down to the counting room without a proper explanation, dragging him away from the quiet sanctuary of his third-floor office. Viktor knew his right-hand man well enough to understand that Niko wouldn’t dare pull him away unless it was a situation that required his direct, absolute authority. Still, it pissed him off. He had built this empire to run smoothly. Whoever was causing this disruption would face severe, bloody consequences.

As he navigated the VIP sections, a couple of scantily clad women called out to him, flashing inviting smiles. Viktor didn’t slow his relentless pace, though his pale grey eyes swept appreciatively over their curves, making a mental note to revisit the distraction once he had handled whatever mess awaited him below.

He reached the reinforced security door leading to the back-of-house operations. Swiping his keycard and punching in his private code, he stepped through. The heavy steel door sealed shut behind him with a heavy thud, instantly cutting off the thumping bass and chaotic noise of the crowded club. He stepped into the pristine, brightly lit white corridor. The stark silence was a welcome relief. This club was a highly lucrative investment and a perfect front for his operations, but the relentless noise out there could drive any sane man over the edge.

He spotted Niko standing further down the hall, his expression grim. Before Viktor could even open his mouth to demand what the hell was going on, a loud, violent crash erupted from behind the counting room door. The sound of heavy machinery shattering against the floor was immediately followed by the piercing, furious screams of a woman. It wasn't a muffled whimper; it was aggressive, raw, and full of pure, unadulterated rage.

Viktor's hand instinctually drifted toward the cold steel of the gun holstered at his waist, his muscles tensing. Niko mirrored the movement.

"Viktor, we have a situation," Niko stated grimly, dropping his hand from his weapon.

"No shit," Viktor growled, his voice thick with annoyance. He briefly entertained the thought that one of his temperamental ex-lovers had managed to bypass security to throw a violent tantrum. It wouldn't be the first time a woman lost her mind in his establishment, but he couldn't recall pissing anyone off recently enough to warrant this level of destruction. "What the fuck is going on?"

"Dimitri and Tadek just got back from their run," Niko explained, his voice low.

"Did they collect the debt?" Viktor demanded, his irritation flaring. He didn't have the time or the patience to be dragged down here over a standard collection run.

"You could say that," Niko replied, his expression deadly serious.

Another shrill, frantic shriek tore through the corridor, bouncing off the sterile white walls. Viktor had officially lost whatever shred of patience he had left. He stormed forward, pulled out his keys, and violently unlocked the heavy door to the counting room, shoving it wide open.

He stepped inside and was instantly forced to jerk his head back. A heavy office stapler sailed right through the space his face had occupied a split second earlier. It smashed violently into the doorframe with a sharp crack before clattering loudly to the floor. Viktor tracked its fall with a dark, murderous glare, then snapped his gaze up to the center of the room.

What he saw completely derailed his immediate urge to start breaking jaws.

Standing on the opposite side of the central table was a woman. Despite the chaotic scene, she was a striking, undeniable vision. Even with a violently bruised cheek, a split lip, and swollen, tear-filled blue eyes, her beauty hit him like a physical blow. Her wildly disheveled honey-blond hair tumbled down her shoulders in messy waves, a broken hair tie barely holding the back strands together. She wore a bulky, unassuming sweater and faded jeans, but the thick fabric couldn't hide the lush, voluptuous curves of her body. The sheer, raw femininity of her figure sent an instantaneous surge of heat straight to his groin. His body reacted with pure, primal instinct, a heavy arousal gripping him instantly.

But his dark fascination was violently interrupted as the beautiful, battered woman snatched up a pen from the table and frantically hurled it at his men.

Dimitri and Tadek were standing uselessly on the other side of the room, completely caught off guard by the assault. The pen hit Tadek squarely in the chest with a soft thump. Dimitri shot a nervous, slightly pale glance toward Viktor, realizing their boss had just walked into this absolute clusterfuck. Niko stepped quietly into the room behind Viktor, watching the chaos unfold with a stony expression.

The girl didn't stop. She grabbed another pen, chucking it wildly through the air. It sailed uselessly between the two mafia thugs. She was backing her trembling form deeper into the corner of the room, her voice hoarse and broken as she shrieked at them.

"Stay away! Stay away from me! Stay away!" she screamed repeatedly, her chest heaving with exertion and sheer panic. She kept shouting even as she ran out of office supplies to use as projectiles.

Viktor was undeniably captivated by her, but he possessed absolutely zero patience for this hysterical, ear-piercing ruckus. The chaotic screaming was drilling a hole straight through his skull.

Acting on pure, lethal dominance, he stormed aggressively around the shattered remains of the heavy bill counter on the floor and bypassed the central table. The sheer size and threatening aura of his imposing frame caused the woman to shrink back even further, pressing herself desperately into the cold corner. She held her trembling hands up defensively, a frantic mantra tumbling from her split lips.

Viktor didn't give her a fraction of a second to react. He lunged forward and grabbed both of her violently bruised wrists in a single, inescapable grip, pinning her hands securely against his chest. He leaned in dangerously close, towering over her trembling form, his face mere inches from her brilliant, terrified blue eyes.

"Will you shut the fuck up!" he roared, the sheer volume and raw aggression of his voice vibrating through the small room.

The effect was instantaneous. She slammed her mouth shut, her breath hitching in her throat. Fresh tears immediately pooled in her swollen eyes, spilling over her lashes and cutting fresh tracks down her bruised cheeks. Her lower lip began to tremble with a pathetic, heart-wrenching vulnerability.

Oh, fuck.

A sudden, unexpected jolt of pure dread struck Viktor straight in the chest. Like most hardened, ruthless men in his world, he was utterly terrified of dealing with a weeping woman. He would genuinely rather wade into a chaotic, bloody gunfight against a hundred of his worst enemies than stand here holding a crying, broken girl.

Deeply unsettled by the sudden tightening in his gut, Viktor hastily released her bruised wrists, his sharp eyes catching the bright red marks already forming against her pale skin. He immediately spun around, turning his broad back to her, stubbornly refusing to look at those massive, weeping eyes. Out of sight, out of mind.

It was a flawed strategy. He could still hear the soft, pitiable, broken sobs escaping her lips behind him, but he forced himself to completely ignore the sound. He fixed his murderous glare on the three men standing in the room.

"Can someone tell me why the fuck my expensive bill counter is smashed to pieces on the floor, and why I was nearly decapitated by a flying stapler?" Viktor growled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that promised extreme violence.

The room descended into a suffocating silence, punctuated only by the girl’s soft, trembling sobs from the corner. Viktor stared down Dimitri and Tadek, his eyes narrowing into cold, predatory slits.

"Since that is obviously too hard of a fucking question for you idiots to answer, let’s start with the basics," Viktor snapped, feeling his blood pressure steadily rising. If he didn't get answers in the next five seconds, he wasn't going to be held responsible for the blood he spilled. Heads were going to roll. "Did you go to the collection?"

"Yeah, boss, we did," Dimitri answered, nervously shifting his weight under the crushing weight of Viktor's furious glare.

"Did you collect the debt?" Viktor demanded, exhaling a sharp, irritated breath.

Dimitri swallowed hard. "We did... but Kovak didn’t have the cash."

Tadek, lacking any basic survival instincts, flashed an incredibly foolish, arrogant grin. "But he offered his niece’s services as an alternative way to pay off his debt."

A sudden, violent urge ripped through Viktor. He wanted to cross the room and brutally smash his fist square into the rookie's smug face, shattering his nose into a hundred bloody pieces for dragging this chaotic mess onto his doorstep. He took a slow, deep breath, tightly clenching his fists at his sides. He forcefully reminded himself that Tadek was new to the organization. He was allowed exactly one mistake. This was it. Dimitri, on the other hand, was a veteran. He should have known significantly better than to bring a kidnapped, hysterical woman into the heart of his club.

"Explain," Viktor demanded, his tone dangerously soft and lethal.

"It just sounded like a much better deal than coming back completely empty-handed," Dimitri confessed, offering a weak shrug as if trying to justify his colossal stupidity.

Viktor shot Niko a dark, incredibly meaningful look. Niko gave a sharp nod, instantly understanding the silent command.

"Go with Niko. Get out of my sight. I’ll clean up your fucking mess myself," Viktor ordered, his voice echoing with absolute authority.

"Yes, boss," Dimitri muttered quickly, eager to escape the suffocating tension.

As they turned to leave, Tadek shot Viktor a lingering, defiant look, his eyes darting toward the corner where the girl was cowering. It was the look of a filthy dog wanting to take back the bone he felt was rightfully his. Viktor's jaw clenched so hard his teeth ground together. If the rookie ever looked at her like that again, Viktor would carve his eyes out.

He waited in tense silence until the heavy steel door clicked shut, leaving him entirely alone with the trembling girl. Slowly, deliberately, Viktor turned back around to face her.

She was still pressed desperately into the corner, completely disheveled and battered, yet beneath the bruises and the tear-stained cheeks, she radiated a pure, undeniable innocence. It was an aura of absolute goodness that fiercely clashed with the dark, blood-soaked reality of the room. Looking at her, staring into her wide, terrified eyes, a wicked, overwhelming urge suddenly ignited deep within his chest. It was a dark, consuming desire to completely corrupt her. He wanted to strip away that bright innocence, drag her down into his shadowed, violent world, and bind her securely to the darkness. He had never encountered a creature quite like her, and the twisted, dominating thought of what he could do to her—what he could do with her—sent a deeply pleasurable, wicked shiver racing through his veins.

A cruel, calculating smile spread slowly across his lips, transforming his handsome features into something dangerously predatory.

Elena stood absolutely petrified, hopelessly pinned in the sterile corner of the room by the sheer, dominating presence of the giant man standing before her. If the blond thug who had brought her here was somewhat attractive, this man was entirely different. He was like a dark, towering figure ripped straight out of a terrifying yet captivating nightmare, wrapped in a perfectly tailored burgundy three-piece suit that screamed immense wealth and absolute, ruthless power.

Even through the suffocating, dizzying haze of her absolute terror, her mind betrayed her, automatically cataloging his striking, exceptionally dangerous features. He had chillingly pale grey eyes that seemed to pierce straight through her flesh to read the secrets of her soul. His dark hair was slicked back flawlessly, and a rugged, dark five o'clock shadow emphasized the harsh, unforgiving lines of his sharp jaw. Under normal circumstances, Elena would have been breathlessly staring at a man this handsome. But right now, the cold aura of lethal violence rolling off his broad shoulders froze the blood in her veins.

When he had first burst into the room, a wild spark of hope had ignited in her chest. She had foolishly thought he might be a savior, a security guard coming to rescue her from the two monsters intent on raping and trafficking her. But then he had stormed over, violently gripped her bruised wrists in his massive hands, and terrifyingly roared at her to shut up. He wasn't her savior. He was the boss. The king of these monsters.

Her uncle Janko had always suffered from a severe, destructive gambling problem. She knew he made terrible choices, knew he constantly chased the thrill of the bet until his pockets were empty. But she couldn't fathom the horrific, soul-crushing reality that he had actually sold her body to a gang of ruthless mobsters just to clear a pathetic debt. It felt like a sick, twisted joke. But the blood on her lip and the aching bruises on her wrists told her it was horrifyingly real.

As the heavy steel door clicked shut, plunging the room into a heavy, oppressive silence, Elena realized she was permanently trapped. Utterly alone with the mafia boss.

He turned to face her. An ice-cold, predatory smile slowly spread across his devastatingly handsome face as he looked down at her cowering form. The sheer dominance radiating from his tall frame made the air in the room feel incredibly thin.

"Janko Kovak is your uncle?" he asked. His voice was dangerously calm, a smooth, deep baritone that carried a lethal edge.

Elena’s battered body trembled violently out of sheer, unadulterated fear. She bit down hard on the inside of her mouth, trying desperately to stop her lower lip from quivering. She stared up into his face, fully aware that the terrifying, calculating look swirling in this man's pale grey eyes was something that would mercilessly haunt her nightmares forever. That is, assuming she even survived the night.
