Shift and Sniff and Squirt

The physical agony of my first shift was utterly excruciating. There was no gentle transition, no beautiful awakening of my inner spirit like the fairy tales promised—only blinding, white-hot pain that violently ripped through my entire body. My bones violently snapped, fractured, and rearranged themselves beneath my skin, forcing tearing screams from my throat into the freezing, pitch-black night air. I threw my head back, my spine lengthening with a sickening, audible crunch. Every muscle fiber in my human form felt as though it was being shredded and rewoven, pulled taut over a skeletal structure that was completely mutating. The agony was so severe I collapsed into the unforgiving, icy snow, my hands digging frantically into the frozen earth as my fingernails aggressively hardened and elongated into thick, lethal claws.

But the very second the agonizing, bone-breaking transformation concluded, the pain vanished entirely. A thick, luxurious coat of sandy-coloured fur entirely enveloped my new, massive form, instantly shielding me from the brutal winter wind. I stood up on all four powerful paws, shaking out my dense coat, and an incredible, euphoric sense of absolute freedom violently washed over me. My eyesight and hearing were suddenly, shockingly sharp. I could hear the microscopic crunch of a single snowflake hitting the ground miles away; I could see the distinct, jagged edges of the pine needles in the pitch-black darkness. I tipped my large, furry head back toward the sky and let out a triumphant, echoing howl. I was a wolf.

I burst forward, running frantically through the deep, snowy woods. My powerful new legs propelled me forward with such explosive speed and raw strength that it made me feel as though I was practically flying across the frozen landscape. The pristine white snow blurred beneath my paws, the black sky stretched endlessly above me, and for the first time in my miserable, neglected life, I felt completely and utterly invincible. I ran until my massive lungs burned, aggressively pushing my newly awakened wolf body to its absolute limits, leaping over massive fallen logs and tearing through thick brush without a single ounce of hesitation. I spent hours utterly exhausting my pent-up energy, letting the sheer thrill of my sandy-coloured wolf take complete control.

Eventually, when the adrenaline finally began to wane, I knew I had to return. Reluctantly, I focused on what I looked like as a human. The physical shift back was painful, my bones violently snapping and breaking all over again, forcing me down into the snow, but it was not nearly as devastating as the first time. The moment I was trapped back in my frail human skin, the biting, brutal cold viciously assaulted my naked body. Shivering violently, my teeth chattering loud enough to echo in the silent clearing, I was forced to quickly dress in my discarded, cheap clothes, wrapping my thin sweater tightly around my freezing torso.

I sneaked quietly back through the pitch-black woods and slipped into the silent pack house. The massive estate was eerily quiet. I knew the triplets were currently out at a local club, heavily celebrating the first few minutes of their monumental twenty-first birthday with their friends, getting as drunk as their Alpha metabolisms would allow. The pack house had three sprawling floors; the Alpha and Luna occupied the grand suites on the top floor, while the Triplets and I slept on the middle floor. The wealth disparity was physically nauseating. Each triplet had a colossal master bedroom and a sprawling en-suite bathroom, whereas I was crammed into a tiny, converted storage room down a narrow, neglected servant's hallway.

As I crept silently past their massive master bedrooms on the upper floor, intending to head straight to my pathetic quarters, my newly heightened wolf senses suddenly assaulted me. The sheer intensity of my upgraded olfactory system was overwhelming. I froze in the middle of the plush hallway. I was violently hit by a distinct, overwhelmingly irresistible scent pouring out from beneath Corbin’s bedroom door. I couldn't help myself. I cautiously pushed his unlocked door open and snuck in. He was always the least scary of the three massive Alphas, so I naively figured I wouldn't mind if he caught my scent later and realized I had been snooping. From Corbin’s room, a mouth-watering, deeply comforting aroma of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies wafted heavily into the hall, saturating my lungs. I looked around the dark, luxurious space, my nose twitching. Maybe he had stashed pot cookies somewhere? I sniffed around his expensive belongings but found absolutely nothing. I groaned internally, realizing I had just heavily layered my new, post-shift scent all over his personal space for absolutely no reason.

I quietly walked out of his room, but the second I stepped back into the corridor, my nose caught another scrumptious, undeniably magnetic scent. This one was pouring directly from the middle master bedroom, which belonged to Zander. I absolutely dared not step foot inside his territory, but I couldn't stop myself from leaning in and heavily sniffing the doorway. The rich, sweet scent of coconut shavings violently wrapped around my senses, laced with a sharp, intoxicating tropical edge. I stood there, heavily breathing it in, my chest heaving as a terrifying realization began to form in the back of my mind. Why had I never picked up these incredibly specific, mind-numbing smells before? My heart started to violently race against my ribs.

I was absolutely terrified to go anywhere near Kellan’s room at the end of the hall, but I had to know. The anxiety clawing at my throat was suffocating. If all three of their rooms suddenly smelled this incredibly, undeniably intoxicating to my newly awakened wolf, then...

I aggressively refused to finish the thought. I practically forced my trembling legs to walk over to Kellan’s imposing, heavy oak door. The second I stood before it, the dark, intoxicating, and intensely strong smell of roasted coffee and bitter cocoa viciously invaded my nose. It was rugged, sharp, and overwhelmingly dominant. My mouth physically watered. Did Kellan actually smell that fucking good?

Suddenly, a harsh, freezing draft forcefully swept through the open window at the end of the corridor, violently mixing all three of these incredibly intoxicating scents together in a heavy, suffocating cloud that slammed directly into my face.

Absolute panic violently seized my chest as my inner wolf practically howled in undeniable recognition. The bond violently snapped into place in my mind, vibrating through my very blood. *Mates.*

I was in massive, unimaginable trouble. I violently spun around and sprinted down the narrow servant's hall, throwing myself into my tiny, converted storage room and frantically locking the peeling door behind me. I collapsed onto my pathetic, lumpy cot, my chest violently heaving as I pulled the thin, meager blankets up to my chin. I tossed and turned in the pitch-black darkness, my skin burning, completely and absolutely terrified. My mind was racing a million miles a minute. Would they smell my scent lingering in the hallway the second they returned home? Would my newly awakened, distinct scent immediately give me away? I desperately tried to rationalize the terror away. Maybe my enhanced sense of smell was just picking up environmental odors I had never noticed before. Maybe every Alpha smelled this damn good. But my howling inner wolf knew the terrifying, biological truth. I was mated to my lifelong tormentors.

Third Person

At exactly three in the morning, the heavy front doors of the pack house violently banged open. Corbin, Zander, and Kellan sauntered into the grand foyer, highly tipsy, laughing loudly, and utterly exhausted from their wild, unrelenting birthday celebrations. It was officially Saturday. Later that night, they would host their monumental, official birthday party and endure their highly anticipated alpha succession ceremony. Celebrating heavily with their respective girlfriends and their sycophantic 'bros' from the local town had left them drained but buzzing with residual adrenaline. It was incredibly difficult for massive Alpha werewolves to get genuinely drunk, no matter the sheer volume of alcohol they consumed, but the identical triplets had really done their absolute best tonight. Slurring slightly, they lazily wished each other a good night and a happy birthday before heavily parting ways to their massive suites.

Stumbling haphazardly into his sprawling bedroom, Corbin immediately paused, his massive hand freezing on the light switch. His newly enhanced, fully matured Alpha senses were immediately and violently struck by a maddeningly sweet, overwhelming scent saturating his entire personal space. It was a heavy, intoxicating explosion of fresh roses and blooming honeysuckle. It hit him so hard his knees nearly buckled. He shivered violently, a deep, primal groan tearing its way out of his throat. The scent was driving him completely fucking crazy. It was soaked into his plush carpet, lingering heavily around his expensive bedsheets, wrapping around his mind like a physical vice. His inner wolf surged violently forward, clawing at his chest, demanding he find the source of the intoxicating smell. He aggressively paced the floor, running his large hands through his messy hair, completely unable to sleep as the agonizing, burning need consumed him. He felt as if he vaguely recognized the underlying foundation of the smell, but the overwhelming, blooming sweetness of the honeysuckle was entirely new.

Driven completely insane by the biological pull as dawn threatened to break, Corbin could not take the agonizing isolation for a single second longer. He rushed back into the dimly lit hallway and began frantically, aggressively banging his heavy fists against his brothers' locked doors.

"What's wrong, little bro?" Kellan barked, pulling his door open, his dark eyes squinting against the low light, clear concern evident on his sharp, handsome face.

Zander practically stormed out of his room directly after, looking thoroughly annoyed and half-asleep. "It better be damn good, Corbin. It's six o'clock in the fucking morning. We partied like animals last night, and we're partying even harder tonight," Zander grumbled, doing a lazy, sarcastic little dance while stretching his massive, muscular arms.

"Just smell my room," Corbin demanded, his chest heaving heavily, his baby blue eyes wide and slightly unhinged.

His elder brothers scoffed, chuckling dismissively, but as Corbin aggressively walked back toward his open door, they naturally followed his massive frame.

"Enough of this shit," Zander growled, storming past Corbin directly into the middle of the bedroom. The absolute second Zander crossed the threshold, he stopped dead in his tracks. His entire massive body froze rigidly. Kellan stepped in right behind him, and his dark eyes immediately widened to the size of saucers.

"Oh my fucking God," Zander breathed out, his voice dropping an octave as his eyes grew wide and absolutely wild. "What is that?" The massive Alpha immediately started aggressively sniffing the air, tracking the heavy, lingering scent around his brother's room like a starved predator.

"Little Bro, exactly who the hell was in your room tonight?" Kellan asked sharply, all traces of sleep instantly evaporating from his imposing posture.

Zander whipped around, his chest heaving as the scent hit him directly in the lungs. "You’ve been with our mate!" Zander growled gleefully at his brothers, a deep, possessive rumble vibrating the very floorboards. "You're trying to keep her all to yourself!"

"No! I swear to God, I don't know whose scent it is, and it's driving me absolutely fucking crazy," Corbin protested, his tired eyes practically begging his brothers to believe him.

"Our mate's been in this exact room," Zander declared, his voice laced with aggressive, possessive joy. "She found us! Oh, I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on her." Zander let out another deep, guttural growl, his inner wolf practically clawing to get out.

"Wait, what about Sasha, Tessa, and Audra?" Corbin suddenly asked, his brow furrowing as he mentioned the three beautiful, high-status girls they were currently dating.

Without a single second of hesitation or remorse, the three identical brothers quickly and ruthlessly agreed to dump their current, respective girlfriends immediately.

"We've only been fucking dating them for like a couple of weeks! They already know damn well they aren't our fated mates, so it was always a temporary distraction. I'm going to end it with Tessa over the fucking phone right now," Zander stated dismissively, waving his large hand as if tossing out actual garbage. Ensuring there would be absolutely no romantic drama or pathetic loose ends before their monumental alpha succession ceremony later that night was their absolute top priority.

"Yeah, exactly," Kellan quickly agreed, his sharp jaw clenching. "If we can somehow find our mate in time for the ceremony tonight, we absolutely do not want those girls showing up and trying to harass her. The pack needs to see us entirely devoted to our Luna."

"Yeah, they'd be incredibly jealous," Corbin nodded, his mind already spinning. "And there's only one of her and three of them, so we better forcefully cut them off before tonight to protect her."

As Zander and Corbin excitedly sat on the edge of the plush bed, aggressively discussing how to quickly handle their newly dumped exes, Kellan completely ignored their mundane chatter. He lowered his head, his dark eyes narrowing dangerously as he began methodically tracking the familiar, incredibly heavy scent of fresh roses and blooming honeysuckle leading directly out of the bedroom. He walked slowly, his massive chest expanding as he inhaled deeply, following the invisible, intoxicating trail down the long, winding hallway. He walked straight past the grand, luxurious suites of the upper echelons, stepping onto the cheaper, scuffed hardwood of the neglected servant's quarters.

He stopped dead in his tracks in front of the peeling, pathetic door of Amity's tiny makeshift room. The exact same intoxicating, heavy cloud of honeysuckle and roses hit him like a brutal physical blow, violently saturating his lungs. He stood there, completely frozen, a deep shiver violently racking his massive, muscular frame. Slowly, almost reverently, his large hand reached out and turned the cheap metal doorknob. Pushing the creaky door open, he stepped inside and just stared.

He stared at her empty, pathetic, lumpy cot shoved violently into the corner. He stared at the cracked walls, the absolute lack of space, the single, miserable dresser. The harsh, deeply embarrassing reality of her incredibly cramped, totally degrading living conditions suddenly dawned on him, hitting his massive Alpha pride like a runaway freight train. The pack house had massive, empty guest bedrooms that were easily five times the size of this literal broom closet. Why the hell had their parents forced their fated mate to live in this humiliating squalor?

His younger brothers quickly caught up, crowding into the narrow doorway behind him. Corbin happily bypassed Kellan's frozen form without a single care in the world. He dropped heavily down onto the thin mattress, eagerly curling his massive, muscular, six-foot-four frame onto her comically small bed, burying his face deeply into her cheap pillow just to greedily inhale her lingering scent and wait for her return.

Kellan immediately began eagerly plotting out loud, his Alpha instincts demanding he provide for his mate. "We have to take her to the high-end mall the exact second it opens at ten. I'm going to take her on an extravagant, absolute limitless birthday shopping spree. I'm buying her everything. Look at this place, she barely has anything to her name."

But Zander didn't move. He stood rigidly in the doorway, looking utterly dumbfounded and absolutely horrified. His wide eyes darted frantically around the tiny, depressing room, the horrifying reality violently crashing down on him.

"We’re not good!" Zander suddenly yelled, his voice cracking loudly as he began waving his large, muscular arms around the tiny room like a complete madman. "Our mate is Pity! Amity! When she realises she’s our mate, she’s going to reject us!"

Corbin viciously snapped his head up from the pillow, his baby blue eyes instantly flashing completely black with aggressive, possessive Alpha rage. "Do not ever fucking call her that!" Corbin snarled, his fangs practically extending.

"Sorry! Sorry, damn it! It's a horrible fucking habit. Amity," Zander corrected himself quickly, though speaking her real name actually felt incredibly right rolling off his tongue.

Kellan just looked at Zander like he had lost his mind, completely unbothered as he continued casually rummaging through Amity's meager belongings to gauge her clothing sizes. "Are you even hearing yourself, Zander? What the hell is your problem?"

Zander paced frantically in the tiny sliver of free space, his chest heaving with genuine, terrifying panic. "Amity is our fated mate! We had absolutely no idea because she literally just came of age today! We’ve treated Amity like absolute garbage for nearly a decade! When the realization hits her, she’s going to fucking reject us immediately!"

Corbin shot straight up into a rigid sitting position on the tiny cot, his massive chest puffing out aggressively. "No, she is not. No, she legally can't. We have been waiting three agonizing years to finally find our mate."

But Zander violently stopped pacing, his wild eyes locking onto his brothers, spelling out the bitter, terrifying truth they were purposefully ignoring. "Do you idiots remember why Amity explicitly swore directly to our faces just yesterday that she never, ever wanted a mate? She said it was because he might be as mean and cruel to her as we have been to her for years! Her mate is literally *us*."

Corbin and Kellan finally stopped moving, a flicker of genuine worry briefly crossing their arrogant features.

"She’s going to freak out," Zander warned them, his voice laced with heavy, undeniable panic. "She’s going to try to leave! Remember? She's been loudly talking about turning eighteen, finishing high school, and immediately abandoning the pack!"

Kellan simply smirked, leaning casually against the cracked plaster wall, his overwhelming Alpha confidence completely unshaken by Zander's frantic rambling. "She has seven more months of high school left. It's only November. We have until June or July with her trapped right here in our house to convince her otherwise. Once the biological pull of the mate bond actually hits her bloodstream, she’ll easily be putty in our hands."

Corbin, still heavily tangled in Amity's meager, cheap blankets, slowly grinned wickedly. A dark, predatory mischief began dancing violently in his baby blue eyes as he stared at the empty doorway. "Amity might hate us now, but by next summer we’ll be making her submit."

His elder brothers looked at him, the brief moment of tense panic completely breaking. Kellan and Zander threw their heads back, their massive chests vibrating as they burst into dark, rumbling, incredibly arrogant laughter that violently echoed down the silent, freezing hallway.
