The Shadowwood Pact

Aria pushed open the heavy wooden front door, her entire body tensed and bracing for the familiar, stinging slap of her stepmother’s hand. She fully expected Garrett’s heavy boots stomping toward her, or Brenda’s shrill, angry voice echoing through the narrow hallway to brutally berate her for her inexcusable tardiness. Instead, as she and Mila stepped over the threshold into the tense, quiet atmosphere of the house, they were met by a chilling sight that instantly stopped Aria dead in her tracks.

In the center of the dimly lit living room sat Alpha Roman. He was leaning forward on the worn fabric of the sofa, engaged in a hushed, incredibly serious discussion with Brenda, Garrett, and her stepsister, Chloe. The moment Aria’s battered shoes scuffed against the floorboards, the low, conspiratorial murmur of their voices ceased entirely. The room instantly fell into a heavy, suffocating silence that pressed down on Aria’s chest.

All four heads snapped in her direction. Aria instinctively shrank back, her bruised, bleeding arms pulling tight against her chest. Chloe leaned back against an armchair, looking at Aria with a smug, mocking smirk. Her eyes glinted with a raw, ugly jealousy, a cruel, satisfied smile stretching across her face as she took in Aria's battered state.

Before Aria could even attempt to open her mouth, Brenda shattered the quiet. "Get inside your room!" Brenda snapped, her voice a harsh, authoritative whip that sliced through the tension. She pointed a trembling finger down the narrow hallway. "And stay there! I strictly forbid you from coming out unless you are explicitly given permission to do so. Do not make a single sound."

Aria swallowed hard, her heart pounding violently against her bruised ribs. Grabbing Mila’s sleeve with a shaking hand, she ducked her head and practically dragged her friend down the corridor, desperately fleeing the suffocating, judgmental weight of the Alpha's gaze.

Banished to her cramped, dusty bedroom, Aria quickly shut the door behind them. She collapsed onto the edge of her small, creaky bed, groaning softly as the abrupt movement pulled at the deep, painful cuts she had just sustained. Mila sat right beside her, keeping a supportive arm wrapped securely around Aria’s trembling shoulders.

Aria’s mind raced with dark, terrifying possibilities. Why would the Alpha lower himself to sit in her rundown living room? "He’s paying them off," Aria whispered, staring blankly at the uneven floorboards. "Alpha Roman... he’s negotiating a financial payoff with them right now."

Mila looked at her, entirely confused by the sudden assumption. "A payoff?"

"To keep me quiet," Aria continued, the grim realization settling heavily over her like a dark cloud. "To ensure that the embarrassing truth of me being the future Alpha's true mate never leaks to the public. He knows my parents will eagerly take whatever money he offers to cover this mess up." She looked down at her bleeding arms, feeling physically bruised and emotionally drained to the point of absolute exhaustion. The sheer weight of the day was threatening to crush her completely.

Aria leaned her heavy head onto Mila’s shoulder, a desperate, dangerous thought suddenly taking root in her mind. "Mila... what if I run away?"

Mila was instantly horrified by the suggestion. She pulled back quickly, her gray eyes wide with sheer panic, and grabbed both of Aria’s hands in a desperate, vice-like grip. "Are you insane?" Mila hissed, keeping her voice low so they wouldn't be overheard. "If you run away, you will instantly be branded as a rogue. Do you understand what that means? It is a death sentence, Aria! Every single werewolf pack enforces the rogue law without a single ounce of mercy. They will hunt you down and execute you on sight."

"And if I stay here, what do you think they'll do to me?" Aria fired back, a choked sob escaping her throat. "They are going to kill me within days, Mila. Garrett, Brenda, or the Alpha himself. They’ll kill me and easily disguise my death as a tragic accident! Escaping to the human world to find the mother who abandoned me seems like my only remaining chance of survival right now."

"It’s not that simple, Aria, you can’t just walk out of the territory—"

Their tense, desperate argument was violently cut short when the bedroom door suddenly swung open, hitting the wall with a loud thud.

Chloe stood in the doorway, blocking their only exit. She leaned back against the wooden doorframe with a wicked, arrogant sneer. She looked Aria up and down, taking in the dried blood and damp dirt covering her clothes, clearly eager to make Aria’s life even more miserable than it already was.

"I am honestly amazed at the Moon Goddess," Chloe mocked, her voice dripping with venomous delight. "She really messed up her job this time. Pairing a pathetic, scrawny half-breed like you with the Alpha's powerful son? What a complete and utter joke."

Chloe waved her hand in utter disgust, stepping further into the cramped room. "Mom told you to stay put, so don't even think about trying to sneak out of this house. Not that it matters. Alpha Roman has already decided your fate. First thing tomorrow morning, you will be offered as a tribute to the mysterious residents of the Shadowwood."

Aria’s breath caught painfully in her throat, her blood running cold.

"They are coming to collect you," Chloe added, her eyes gleaming with a dark, twisted satisfaction.

Mila shot up from the bed, shocked to her absolute core. "What? No! There has to be a mistake!" Mila protested loudly, stepping toward Chloe. "You can't hand her over to those heartless monsters! Handing Aria over to the Shadowwood is nothing short of a guaranteed death sentence! You might as well just kill her right here in this room!"

Chloe merely laughed, a cold, hard sound that offered zero sympathy. "Oh, there's no mistake. It is already a done deal. And you better leave this house immediately, Mila. Mom and Dad are sick of you lingering around here."

Chloe turned on her heel, preparing to walk out. She paused and glanced over her shoulder, throwing a final, vicious parting insult directly at Aria. "You absolutely deserve this terrible fate, bitch."

She walked out, slamming the door shut and leaving the room in a ringing, terrifying silence.

Terrified and deeply confused by the sudden mention of the highly guarded, forbidden secret of the Shadowwood, Aria immediately turned to Mila for answers. It was a dark, dangerous place that no one in the pack ever dared to speak about openly.

Mila was trembling violently with sheer panic. She reached out and grabbed Aria’s shoulders, her gray eyes wide with an indescribable dread. "By the Goddess, Aria... you must escape. Right now. Regardless of the fatal consequences, you have to run!"

"Why?" Aria begged, gripping Mila's shaking wrists tight. "Tell me what is in there!"

Mila swallowed hard, her pale lips quivering as she finally revealed the dark, closely guarded secret of their world. "Deep within the forbidden, misty expanse of the Shadowwood... live the Lycans."

Aria’s entire body went rigid.

"They are ancient, monstrous beasts," Mila whispered rapidly, her fingers digging painfully into Aria’s bruised skin. "Far larger and more powerful than ordinary werewolves. A single Lycan is capable of tearing entire packs apart with absolute ease. But they suffer from a terrible curse. Lycan females are completely sterile. They are physically unable to bear children or give birth to pups."

Aria stared at her, the horrific, bloody pieces of the puzzle falling into place.

"Centuries ago, the Lycans used to wage brutal, bloody wars against us," Mila continued, fresh tears pooling in her wide eyes. "They would raid the werewolf packs just to violently kidnap eligible she-wolves. They used them as forced breeders, locking the young girls in dark, underground dungeons for the rest of their miserable lives. None of them ever saw daylight again."

Aria felt physically sick. The stale air in the room suddenly felt too thin to breathe.

"To stop this horrific cycle of violence and save our kind, a peace treaty was established between the Alphas and the Lycans," Mila explained, her voice cracking under the immense weight of the terrifying history. "The treaty strictly required the werewolf packs to offer a young girl as a sacrifice. Every ten years, a tribute is given to them. It is now the Silver Creek pack's turn to pay the toll."

Mila took a shuddering breath, a single tear spilling over her cheek and splashing onto Aria's arm. "But things are different now. After fifty years of total silence, a powerful Lycan is emerging from the dark forest."

Mila looked at Aria with absolute, soul-crushing dread, leaning in close to whisper the final, devastating truth. "They are coming specifically for you."
