The Broken Bond

The intoxicating scent of elderberry and fresh roses hit Aria the moment she stepped onto the school grounds. It was her eighteenth birthday, the day she had dreamed about her entire life. The rich, mouthwatering aroma was an irresistible siren song, pulling her forward. Her heart hammered against her ribs in a frantic rhythm. Somewhere nearby was her fated mate. A sudden, wild hope bloomed in her chest. For eighteen years, she had known nothing but pain and isolation, but this scent promised salvation.

She followed the invisible trail, letting it guide her past the lockers and out toward the main courtyard. Her spirits soared to incredible heights when she pushed through a small cluster of students and traced the aroma directly to him.

Ryder. The gorgeous future Alpha of the Silver Creek pack and the son of Alpha Roman.

He stood in the dead center of the schoolyard, looking like a Greek god sculpted from marble. He had thick golden hair and piercing gray eyes, radiating absolute power. For one blinding, foolish second, Aria felt a rush of pure joy. She took a hopeful step toward him, ready to let the mate bond wash over them.

But her joy was instantly crushed.

Ryder’s powerful arms were already wrapped tightly, possessively, around the waist of another girl. Sienna. The most beautiful, curvaceous she-wolf in the pack, and Aria’s relentless tormentor. Sienna leaned against Ryder’s chest, a smug, triumphant smile playing on her perfect lips. The entire school stood in a tight circle around them, watching with bated breath, the air thick with anticipation.

Aria froze. The smile died on her face. Ryder didn't look at her with the unconditional love the legends promised. As his gray eyes locked onto hers, they held nothing but cold, unyielding disgust. His jaw clenched, and his glare practically screamed at her to stay away.

Before Aria could even process the rejection in his stare, Sienna swept her dark hair over one shoulder and deliberately tilted her neck upward.

With the crowd cheering in anticipation, Ryder broke eye contact with Aria. He turned his head and deliberately sank his sharp fangs deep into Sienna’s exposed neck.

He was marking her. Claiming her as his chosen mate.

A sudden, excruciating physical agony tore straight through Aria's chest. It felt as though a hot iron blade had been driven through her ribs and twisted into her heart. The burning sensation was so intense it completely stole the air from her lungs. She gasped, her knees buckling as she reeled from the brutal severing of their fated bond.

The schoolyard erupted into thunderous applause. Cheers for the future Alpha and Luna rang out, deafening and joyous. Teachers and students alike whistled and clapped, entirely oblivious to the scrawny girl suffocating on the edge of the crowd.

Aria was forced to stumble backward. The pain in her chest flared with every heartbeat. Desperate to melt into the shadows and escape the mocking eyes of her peers, she turned away. Choking on the most agonizing betrayal she had ever experienced, she broke into a run, fleeing headlong into the dense, dark woods that bordered the school.

"No, no, no," Aria rasped as she pushed through the thick branches, tears streaming down her face. "This can't be happening."

She reached deep inside her mind, desperately calling out to her inner wolf, Lyra. She needed strength. She needed comfort. But there was nothing. Lyra had retreated into a state of frozen, numb silence. The wolf was completely shattered by the sheer trauma of Ryder's brutal, public rejection. The mental link felt hollow and dead.

Aria's legs finally gave out. She collapsed against a massive, rough oak tree, sliding down its thick trunk until she hit the damp forest floor. She pulled her knees to her chest and wept bitterly.

She had always been a complete outcast in the Silver Creek pack. She was the frail, scrawny daughter of an omega father and a human mother. Her mother had abandoned her shortly after birth, horrified by the werewolf world, leaving Aria to suffer the consequences of her mixed heritage. When Aria was just a year old, her father, Garrett, found his true mate, Brenda.

From that day on, Aria’s life became a living hell. At home, she was treated worse than an unpaid maid. Her body was constantly covered in fading bruises and fresh black-and-blue marks, the results of severe physical abuse at the hands of Garrett and her cruel stepmother. At school, things were no better. She was the prime target for relentless, malicious bullying, led mostly by Sienna.

Aria had foolishly clung to the fragile hope that turning eighteen would change everything. She had prayed that her fated mate would be her savior, the one person who would finally love her and pull her out of the darkness. She never imagined her mate would be the architect of her deepest suffering.

"Why?" she cried out, her voice cracking as she looked up through the canopy of leaves. Her bruised body ached as she yelled at the sky. "Why me? What did I do to deserve such a cruel fate? Tell me, Moon Goddess! What did I do?"

The woods offered no answer. Only the cold wind rustled the leaves above her.

Shivering and desperate for a safe place to hide, she forced herself up. She dragged her aching, heavy body toward the quiet greenhouse situated on the far edge of the school grounds. It was her only sanctuary.

She slipped through the glass door, the humid air wrapping around her. She stumbled into the back corner, collapsing heavily among the rows of beautiful ceramic pots filled with the deep red roses she had painstakingly grown. She just wanted to disappear. She leaned against a metal tool shelf, clutching her chest, gasping for shallow breaths.

Suddenly, a violent, powerful hand clamped tightly around her throat.

The grip cut off her breath instantly. Before she could even scream, the hand hoisted her upward, lifting her toes slightly off the ground.

Aria panicked, her hands flying up to pry at the iron fingers crushing her windpipe. She looked up and met the furious, storm-gray eyes of Ryder.

"R-Ryder," she choked out, her voice a pathetic wheeze.

He peeled his lips back, baring his sharp fangs. He towered over her, his dominant aura suffocating the tiny space, radiating pure malice.

"Listen to me, you pathetic freak," he snarled, his voice a lethal, low vibration. "If you ever dare to speak a word to anyone that you are my fated mate, I will kill you. I will tear your body into so many unrecognizable pieces that your own father won't be able to identify your corpse. Do you understand me?"

Tears spilled over Aria's cheeks, dripping onto his thick wrist. "B-but," she wept, fighting for air, "I am your true mate. We belong..."

Ryder sneered, his face twisting in absolute disgust. "Did you honestly think a scrawny, half-human piece of trash could ever be my mate? You are an embarrassment to the pack. Sienna is the only one for me."

Without warning, he violently slammed her backward. Her spine collided with the sharp edge of the metal tool shelf. A sickening crack echoed in the greenhouse, and a cry of pure agony ripped from Aria's throat. White-hot stars burst in her vision.

But Ryder wasn't finished. With a furious grunt, he grabbed her by the shoulder and flung her frail body hard across the room.

Aria crashed violently into the rows of ceramic rose pots. The heavy clay shattered upon impact with an explosive crash. Wet soil, heavy roots, and jagged shards of ceramic rained down around her. The sharp shards of clay and the vicious, thick rose thorns tore straight through her thin clothes, slicing deep into the skin of her arms and legs.

She hit the damp floor hard, groaning in pain, her blood instantly mixing with the dirt.

Ryder stood over the wreckage for one final second, breathing heavily. He shot her one last glare of pure loathing, then turned on his heel and stomped out of the greenhouse, disappearing back into the dark woods.

Bruised, bleeding, and entirely broken, Aria lay perfectly still in the debris. The pain radiating from her chest outmatched the stinging cuts on her skin. She didn't know how long she lay there staring at the shattered roses. The sky outside the glass panels slowly darkened, casting deep shadows over her bleeding form.

"Aria! Aria!"

A frantic voice pierced the quiet of the greenhouse. Footsteps crunched over the spilled soil.

It was Mila. The gamma's daughter, and the only genuine friend Aria had ever known in this wretched place.

Mila rounded the corner and gasped in horror. She dropped to her knees, heedless of the broken ceramic and sharp thorns, and rushed to Aria's side. She gently lifted Aria's upper body, cradling her bleeding head in her lap.

"Goddess, Aria, what happened to you?" Mila asked, her voice trembling as she wiped a smear of dirt and blood from Aria's pale cheek.

Aria looked up into Mila's worried eyes. Her chest heaved, and she whispered the agonizing, shameful truth. "Ryder... Ryder is my mate."

Mila froze, her eyes widening as the pieces fell into place. She had seen the marking ceremony. She knew what Ryder had just done in the courtyard. Mila held Aria tighter, rocking her gently as fresh tears fell.

"I'm so sorry," Mila whispered fiercely. "That bastard. That arrogant, cruel bastard." She cursed Ryder's name repeatedly, her voice thick with pity and anger for her broken friend.

After several long minutes, Aria finally managed to pull herself together. The bleeding had slowed, leaving a network of painful scabs across her arms. With Mila's help, she pulled herself up from the wreckage of her beloved roses.

Leaning heavily on Mila's shoulder, Aria began the long, agonizing walk back home. Every step sent a jolt of pain up her spine. Her mind was a chaotic mess of grief and fear. She knew what awaited her. She was incredibly late for her chores. Garrett and Brenda would be furious. She braced herself for the inevitable screaming, the heavy strikes, and yet another brutal beating.

She dragged her feet up the familiar dirt path toward her front door, completely unaware of the shocking surprise waiting for her just on the other side of the wooden frame.
