Accepting the End
[POV: Elara]
The absolute, mind-shattering agony lessened, but only barely.
I was finally able to pull myself from the suffocating depths of the dark, able to start thinking and feeling things other than the violent, burning pain that still rippled through my veins. The invisible hooks that had torn my chest open were gone, leaving a gaping, bloody void in their wake.
And then, my very first conscious thought sent a violent wave of absolute terror crashing through my frozen body.
*Was my baby okay?*
There was no way they could have survived that trauma. The absolute agony of the mate bond snapping replaced the burning physical pain with sheer, blinding panic. I couldn’t lose them too. I pressed my trembling, clammy hands flat against my stomach, trying to feel for a spark, for a sign, for anything at all. They were my absolute last link to Kaelen, the final, desperate tether to the life I still so foolishly, desperately wanted.
I blinked my heavy, crusted eyes open and slowly realized that I was staring at the familiar, faded ceiling of my childhood room in my parents’ house. A fresh, hot wave of tears immediately sprang to my eyes. I was back here. I wasn't in the massive, luxurious bed I had shared with Kaelen in the cresthouse. I had desperately hoped the entire nightmare in the dining hall was just a fever dream, but the cold, sterile sheets of my old bed felt agonizingly final.
The bedroom door creaked open. “Honey?”
My mom rushed in, her face pale and drawn, holding a glass of water. She quickly set it down and hooked her arms under my armpits, gently helping my bruised, battered body sit up against the headboard.
My throat felt like it was coated in thick, dry sand. I grabbed the glass and drank the entire thing without stopping for a single breath, the cool water doing nothing to quench the fire in my soul.
“How long?” I asked, my voice cracking and hurting with every single syllable.
“Almost two days,” she whispered, her eyes brimming with unshed tears.
Two agonizing days. My immediate, pathetic first thought was that I had completely missed the rest of his birthday. I hated myself in that exact second. I hated that I was still actively thinking about him before I thought about myself. But that was how it had always been. I had always put Kaelen first, even long before he ever actually noticed me.
My mom took the empty glass from my shaking hands. “He wants to talk to you when you’re ready.”
I nodded slowly, my heart giving a stupid, pathetic leap in my chest. Every single broken, shattered part of my soul still yearned for him, still desperately craved his scent and his strong embrace. He must have changed his mind. That was the only logical explanation. He saw the positive pregnancy test in the box, realized what he had done in his blind panic, and now he wanted to fix it.
That single, desperate spark of hope was the only thing that gave me the physical strength to drag my completely broken, traumatized body out of that bed. I forced myself into the adjoining bathroom and stepped under the scalding hot spray of the shower, letting it wash the stale sweat of two days of agony down the drain. When I got out, I pulled a wide-tooth comb through my tangled, matted hair. I stared at my reflection in the foggy mirror. There was absolutely nothing I could do to fix the heavy, bruised purple bags under my red-rimmed, puffy eyes. My skin was practically translucent.
*Good,* I thought bitterly. *He should see exactly what he did to me. He should look at me like this.*
I dressed in a loose pair of sweatpants and an oversized sweater, wrapping my arms around my torso as I walked out of my parents' house and made my way straight to his office. Or rather, his father’s office, the one Kaelen was using to handle pack affairs. Every step felt like walking on shattered glass, but I was determined.
I didn't bother knocking. I just grabbed the heavy brass handle and pushed the door open, stepping inside without waiting for a single word of permission.
Kaelen was sitting rigidly behind the massive mahogany desk. He looked up, his jaw tight, clearly surprised that I had barged in. A tiny, vindictive part of my shattered heart was happy to see that he looked worse for wear. His hair was messy, and he had dark circles under his eyes, but he didn't look half as bad as the absolute corpse I was currently sporting.
“Elara,” he breathed, shifting his broad shoulders and motioning with a stiff hand for me to sit down in the leather chair opposite him.
I couldn't read his expression at all. His face was a taut, impenetrable mask, and his eyes—the eyes I had stared into while he kissed me, while he claimed me—were terrifyingly hard. They were completely devoid of the soft, warm, dark brown depth I intimately knew.
I refused the seat. I remained standing right behind the empty leather chair, gripping the top of it so tightly my knuckles turned stark white. My chin jutted forward in defiance. I didn’t speak a single word. This was entirely on him. He had to say it. He had to explain how he was going to fix this absolute nightmare.
“I regret how that happened,” he started, his voice a low, cold rumble. “You put me in a really bad position in front of everyone, but it shouldn’t have been done like that. I should have talked to you privately after the party.”
He rubbed his large hand aggressively over his face, and my heart wildly thrummed against my ribs. *He regrets it. He’s going to take it back.*
“I panicked,” he continued, dropping his hand and looking directly into my eyes. The coldness there made my breath hitch. “But now that we are more contained... I need you to finish it.”
I tilted my head, my brow furrowing in pure, paralyzing confusion. I didn’t understand. Finish what?
“Elara, I need you to accept my rejection so we can move on. Both of us.” His voice was a cold, transactional whip striking bare skin.
The air violently whooshed out of my lungs. The entire room spun on a tilted axis, and I fought with every ounce of my remaining strength just to stay standing. My grip on the leather chair tightened until my fingernails dug straight into the material.
*Move on.*
“You can still stay in this pack territory,” he offered, completely oblivious to the fact that he was murdering my soul. “Your things are being packed up by the pack staff right now for you, and they will be sent over to your parents' house to make the transition easier.”
My ears started ringing. A high-pitched, deafening whine completely drowned out the ambient noise of the office. I couldn’t hear anything but the violent, rushing sound of my own blood pumping frantically through my veins. He wasn't taking it back. He was finalizing it. He was coldly tossing me out and having the staff box up my entire life like I was a terminated employee.
“Elara?” His voice sounded incredibly far away, echoing through a long, dark tunnel.
My entire world violently crumbled into fine, grey dust. With my heart entirely shattering in my chest, I forced my dry mouth to form the exact, agonizing words that would permanently, irrevocably sever our sacred bond forever.
“I, Elaraminta Balfour, accept your rejection to be your mate and your future Luna of The Azure-Crest Territory.”
The absolute last, trembling shred of my soul cracked violently down the middle.
The moment the heavy, suffocating words left my lips, the final lingering thread of the mate bond actively snapped. It wasn't the fiery, explosive agony of his initial rejection, but a cold, hollow, permanent deadness that washed entirely over my body. The tether was completely severed. I was nothing to him anymore.
Somehow, by some sheer miracle of adrenaline, I made myself turn around and walk away from him. I didn't drop to my knees. I didn't beg for his love. I didn't scream the hundreds of desperate questions that were violently coursing through my mind.
*What about the baby? Why? Why wasn't I enough?*
I slammed his office door shut and immediately broke into a sprint. I didn’t notice a single person I passed. I didn't care about the confused, pitying stares of the pack members loitering in the halls. Running frantically like a madwoman was entirely uncharacteristic of a poised, proper Luna, but I wasn’t going to be a Luna anymore, so fuck it.
I burst out of the packhouse and ran directly toward the pack clinic, my lungs burning with every jagged breath. I shoved the heavy glass doors open, completely ignored the startled nurse sitting at the front reception desk, and marched straight down the sterile hallway, launching myself into Dr. Liorah’s private office.
She jumped, dropping a chart on her desk.
“Is the baby okay? I need to know right now,” I demanded, my chest heaving violently, my voice completely frantic.
Her wide eyes instantly softened with deep, knowing pity when she saw me in this broken, deranged state. She must have known. The entire pack definitely knew. She quickly guided me to the examination table, her hands gentle and professional. She didn't waste time asking stupid questions. She had me lie back, pulled up my oversized sweater, and squeezed the cold, clear gel directly onto my flat, trembling stomach.
The silence in the clinic room was absolutely deafening as she moved the ultrasound wand around, her eyes locked intensely on the small monitor. I held my breath, staring blindly at the ceiling, mentally preparing myself for the absolute worst.
And then, a rapid, rhythmic *thrum-thrum-thrum* filled the quiet room.
The baby was fine.
I wasn’t fine. I was completely, irreparably destroyed. But my child had somehow survived the violent, agonizing trauma of the bond snapping. That absolute miracle was the only thing keeping me tethered to this earth.
Thankfully, when I dragged myself back to my parents' house, no one was home yet. I crawled directly into the bed in the room I had lived in until Kaelen had claimed me as his mate. Now, just a few short months before I was supposed to officially become his Luna, I was back exactly where I started. Broken, heartbroken, and utterly confused.
It might have been hours, or maybe even a full day later, when my mom finally got through to me again.
“Sweetie, I know it's incredibly difficult. Your father and I can’t even imagine the pain you're in, but we really need to talk.”
I slowly sat up, the joints in my body aching. She placed a heavy wooden tray of steaming chicken soup and thick slices of warm, homemade bread directly in front of me.
The absolute only reason I picked up the spoon and forced myself to eat was for the baby. I had absolutely zero appetite. Food tasted like wet cardboard and ash. I would have willingly wasted away into nothingness in this bed if it wasn’t for the tiny life fighting to grow inside me.
“We want to know what you want to do next,” my mom said, her voice impossibly soft and careful, like she was speaking to a wounded animal. “We will support you completely, no matter what you choose.”
My dad slowly walked into the bedroom. His broad shoulders were slumped. He put a large, comforting hand on my mother's shoulder as she sat on the edge of the mattress next to my legs.
“What do you mean?” My throat was still scratchy, my voice entirely hoarse. My brain felt like it was operating on a severe delay.
“Do you want to stay here in the territory? Or maybe go to the city for a bit? The human city, just to get away from the pack politics,” my dad offered gently. “Or we could find a friendly crest for you to transfer to temporarily. Of course, your aunt would absolutely love your company up north.”
I placed a protective, trembling hand over my flat stomach. “I can’t—” My voice broke violently.
As much as a cowardly part of me would have absolutely loved to run away to my aunt's house—a place I used to visit during the summers—or move entirely to the human city, attend a normal college, and pretend none of this werewolf pack bullshit ever happened, I couldn't. I had a very real, very permanent biological reminder that it did happen.
I aggressively chewed on the inside of my bottom lip until I tasted the sharp metallic tang of my own blood.
Initially, a toxic, vindictive fire started burning furiously inside my chest. Part of me wanted to stay here. No, that was a lie; a huge, raging part of me wanted to stay right here in the Azure-Crest territory. I fiercely wanted to physically swell up with the future Alpha's legitimate child right in front of all of their faces. I wanted Kaelen to have to look at my expanding belly every single day. I wanted him to have time to witness and realize his colossal, unforgivable mistake.
I wanted to stay to show him exactly what he was missing and to make it so undeniably obvious to everyone in this damn pack that I was carrying the Alpha’s firstborn baby. There was absolutely no way the elders or the pack council would let him get away with this public humiliation after they saw the living proof growing inside me.
“I’ll stay,” I stated, nodding my head with a sudden, manic, newfound determination. I would fight tooth and nail for this baby to have their father. I would fight for them, even if it was the exact thing that made Kaelen panic in the first place.
My parents exchanged a deeply worried, loaded look, then turned their eyes back to me.
“Sweetie,” my mom whispered, placing her warm hand over my knee. “We love how incredibly strong you are, but... that might not be the best idea.”
She looked physically sick with nerves.
“What is it?” I demanded, the tone of my voice instantly dropping. My mom tightly closed her eyes. My dad aggressively rubbed his thick mustache—a nervous habit he always displayed when he was deeply unsettled.
“Elara,” my mom started, her head hanging in shame. My insides instantly started buzzing with pure anxiety. This couldn’t be good.
“Just tell me,” I snapped, my white-knuckled grip on the metal soup spoon turning lethal.
“It seems... well, we heard from the council, but of course, rumors do get started quickly—”
“Kaelen is actively taking another Luna,” my dad cut in, his voice blunt and laced with barely contained disgust.
My entire world violently tilted and spun out of control. I dropped the spoon, scrambled desperately out of the bed, and rushed frantically past them to the adjoining bathroom. I dropped to my knees in front of the toilet and violently emptied the little soup and bread I had just forced down.
I desperately yearned for that heavy, suffocating darkness that I had fallen into the night he rejected me. I still felt entirely numb, but the numbness was rapidly becoming much sharper, much more painful around the edges, and I absolutely didn’t want to feel any of it. He wasn't taking time to think. He was immediately replacing me.
My mom knelt beside me, gently wiping my sweaty face with a cold, damp washcloth, and slowly helped my trembling body back into bed. The absolutely shattered look on her and my dad's faces broke whatever was left of me.
The ultimate, soul-crushing blow was delivered the very next day.
Luna Vespera, Kaelen's mother, casually showed up at our front door. I was deeply surprised but morbidly curious to see exactly what she had to say about the actions of her son. An apology admitting that she and Alpha Harkon had raised such a raging, unfeeling prick wouldn’t go unappreciated right now.
I forced myself to change out of my pajamas and pulled my long, unwashed hair into a messy bun. I was entirely too physically and emotionally drained to even attempt to deal with the heavy tangles.
I slowly walked down the wooden stairs and took a seat right next to her on the living room couch. My mom silently poured us two cups of hot tea, her face completely stony, and then immediately left the room, clearly not trusting herself around the Luna. I reached for the delicate porcelain cup entirely just to give my violently shaking hands something to do.
“Elara,” Vespera sighed softly. Her perfectly plucked eyebrows pulled together in a deep frown as she looked at me with open, sickening pity.
I absolutely hated it.
“I didn’t expect that. Absolutely no one did,” she started, her voice smooth and carefully modulated. “I came to say that Harkon and I are so very sorry that it happened like that, so publicly. We were really looking forward to you becoming the Luna, and we truly enjoyed having you around.”
I stared at her. I completely hated how she was standing in my own home, casually speaking about me in the past tense. She spoke as if this entire nightmare was already permanent and final, as if the Alpha couple had just completely and instantly accepted my disposal.
I didn’t know if I actually believed a single word she was saying, but I gave a small, jerky nod, keeping my eyes locked on the dark brown liquid swirling in my cup.
“We are incredibly happy that he chose to do the right, noble thing, though,” she added softly.
My eyes instantly snapped up from the cup and shot straight to her dark brown eyes—the exact same shade as her son’s.
What the hell did she mean by that?
“I know that you probably don’t see it like that right now, and it’s completely to be expected given the circumstances.” She let out a long, dramatic sigh and took a slow sip of her tea. “But the future of this pack is incredibly important. Securing the Alpha line is even more so. The situation isn't ideal by any means, but we are just so proud and happy that he is choosing a family for his child.” She looked at me with that pathetic, pitying smile.
I was completely, utterly lost. A sudden, wild, desperate flicker of hope violently ignited within the center of my chest.
Did Kaelen actually tell his parents about the positive pregnancy test? The way she was phrasing this, it made absolutely no sense unless he had confessed. He was choosing the baby even though he didn’t officially choose me as his mate. That would just have to be enough. It would absolutely be enough for me if it meant I could still somehow be with him and raise our child together.
“So that just leaves me with an unexpected baby shower and a brand new Luna ceremony to suddenly prepare for,” Vespera chuckled lightly, shaking her head as if this minor inconvenience wasn’t entirely ruining my life.
“You know?” I asked, my voice breathless. I instinctively pressed a protective hand flat against my stomach, a tragic, budding smile desperately fighting to form on my trembling lips. She was already planning a baby shower for us.
“Of course. Kaelen and Lysandra just shared the wonderful news with us this morning.” She gave me that exact same pitied frown, her head tilting slightly.
“What?” My eyes widened, shooting back to hers. The air in the room vanished.
Cold, absolute dread violently suffocated my tiny, pathetic spark of hope once and for all.
“You knew, right?” Vespera asked, her manicured hand flying up to cover her mouth in feigned shock. “Lysandra is about three weeks pregnant. Almost a full month now.”
I didn’t think there was absolutely anything else in the entire world that could be said to shock me. But here we were.
He wasn't choosing me. He wasn't choosing our baby. He was actively, proudly choosing the literal biological result of his filthy infidelity.
“So, although we really do hate how publicly it all happened, we really do... we are just so incredibly proud of our son for doing the honorable thing,” Vespera prattled on, totally oblivious to the fact that I was dying in front of her. “For making this hard decision that has hurt him more than you know, just to put his child before anyone else, even himself.”
I barely heard the rest of her absolute bullshit. The roaring in my ears was deafening.
“Get out,” I demanded. I finally found my voice. My jaw locked so tightly my teeth ached.
The pure, unfiltered shock that immediately plastered her elegant face made me feel nothing but a slight, dark twinge of satisfaction.
“Elara, I know you’re deeply upset, but—”
“I won’t repeat myself,” I snarled, standing up abruptly. The tea sloshed dangerously over the rim of the cup. “Get the fuck out of my house.”
I forcefully evicted the Luna of the Azure-Crest pack from my living room, turning my back and walking out before she could say another word.
I don’t think I had a single tear left in my body to cry. I sat heavily on the wooden stairs and curled into a tight ball, wrapping my arms around my knees. I couldn't comprehend how someone who had once claimed to love me, who had marked me as his destined, could do this to me.
What he had maliciously put me through, I wouldn’t wish on my absolute worst enemy. Well, I might actively wish this specific brand of hell on Lysandra, but that was only wishing on her exactly what she had done to me. But what the fuck could I have possibly done to Kaelen to deserve this absolute destruction?
I always harbored the deep insecurity that I wasn’t enough for him, but he had actively claimed me. And then I had foolishly, stupidly started believing that I was actually worthy of that high claim, worthy of the sacred pairing the Moon Goddess had destined.
It didn't matter. No matter what I did, how I dressed, or if I swelled up like a massive whale right in front of his parents' unfeeling eyes, absolutely nothing I could do would ever make him take me back.
He made his permanent choice. He was fully committed to building a life with the woman he had fucked behind my back.
There was absolutely nothing left for me in this territory.
I finally sat down at the kitchen table and revealed the full, devastating truth of my pregnancy to my parents.
My dad instantly saw red. He surged up from the table, his chair clattering loudly against the floor, screaming that he was going to march to the packhouse and demand blood for the sheer, unadulterated disrespect shown to his daughter. I had to physically throw myself in front of the door to stop him from going to beat Kaelen to a pulp. My mom openly collapsed into a chair, violently weeping in absolute agony for the grandchild whose arrival had now been permanently, irrevocably tainted by this brutal rejection.
I hated that I was bringing this immense pain to their doorstep. I hated that Kaelen was forcing us into this.
What should have been the most incredibly exciting time in their lives—the announcement of their very first grandchild—was entirely ruined. However, without a single second of hesitation, my parents unconditionally agreed to my new plan. I knew they didn’t want to abandon the pack they had served for decades, but I also knew they would do absolutely anything to protect me.
So, we decided to leave the pack entirely.
We spent the next twelve hours systematically packing our entire lives into heavy cardboard boxes. We only brought the absolute essentials with us, loading everything into the back of my dad’s truck. They quietly mentioned that they wanted to return eventually, once the dust settled, but I knew in my soul I never could.
Before we walked out the door, I sat at the counter and wrote a finalized parting letter to my best friend, Lyra. I sealed the envelope, writing her name in sharp, aggressive strokes, and planned to drop it in her mailbox on the way out.
The agonizing, undeniable truth weighed heavier than lead on my exhausted shoulders as I walked out the front door.
Kaelen had humiliated me entirely in public.
He had actively chosen another Luna to replace me.
He had been cheating on me for much longer than that one single time in his office.
He got her pregnant.
And pathetically, humiliatingly, I realized I still loved him.
I hated myself more than anything else for that lingering weakness.
But as I stood outside in the crisp air and took one last, sweeping look at the quiet street, the only true home I had ever known, my lingering, pathetic sadness finally began to shift. It rapidly crystallized into a white-hot, permanent fury.
The worst part of this entire nightmare wasn't just that I didn’t get to choose the rejection. I didn’t get to proudly walk away from his blatant infidelity. I was practically thrown out with the trash and humiliated in front of everyone I knew.
It wasn’t just Kaelen's horrific actions that burned my soul. It was the sickening, horrifying realization of the absolute complicity of the rest of the pack. His future Beta and Gamma—the men I had foolishly considered my close friends—had stood right there in that dining hall and watched him completely destroy me. They didn't step in. They didn't stop him.
His parents didn't stop him.
Not a single fucking person in that room had tried to stop him or ask him what the actual fuck he thought he was doing.
Pure, unadulterated fury violently replaced every last drop of my sadness as I climbed into the backseat of my dad's truck. As we drove away from the Azure-Crest territory, leaving the borders of my past entirely behind, the fire in my chest burned brighter and hotter than the mate bond ever did.
I was completely done. I was gone. And they would never, ever see me break again.
