The Killing Blow
[POV: Elara]
I lock the bedroom door behind me, taking a deep, shuddering breath before I slip into the elegant, floor-length silver dress. Luna Vespera specifically sent this gown to my room for tonight’s occasion, a not-so-subtle dictate on what she expected her future daughter-in-law to wear. The silk fabric feels cold against my skin, clinging tightly to every curve of my body. It has razor-thin straps and a daringly low-cut back. Despite the lingering anxiety from the chaotic afternoon of setting up the dining hall, a flutter of anticipation rises in my chest. I desperately want to be seen tonight. I need Kaelen to look at me and finally validate everything I have been through.
I sit at my vanity, staring at my reflection. My eyes inevitably drop to the small black gift box resting innocuously beside my makeup brushes. Inside that tiny cardboard square is the ultimate game-changer: a positive pregnancy test. It is carefully packaged, a massive secret quietly waiting exclusively for my mate. The Moon Goddess has finally blessed us with an heir to definitively secure his Alpha line.
A soft knock echoes through the wood of my bedroom door. My heart violently leaps into my throat. I quickly push the black box slightly behind a bottle of perfume just as the door clicks open.
"May I come in?" my mother asks, her voice warm and immediately soothing.
"Of course," I say, turning on the velvet stool to face her.
She steps into the room, her eyes widening as she takes in my appearance. "Oh, Elara," she breathes, clasping her hands together over her chest. "You are stunning."
"Thank you," I smile, feeling a rush of genuine warmth.
"I figured you might want some help finishing up," she offers, walking over to stand behind me. She places her hands gently on my bare shoulders, looking at our shared reflection in the mirror.
I nod, letting her take over. Since my best friend Lyra is out of town with her family for the summer, my mother’s presence is exactly what I need to calm my wildly fluttering nerves. I watch in the mirror as my mom expertly gathers the front sections of my dark curls. She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a worn velvet jewelry box.
"I know tonight is heavily focused on Kaelen," my mother says softly, her voice thick with raw emotion. "But you are so incredibly close to officially becoming the Luna of this pack. Your father and I... we are just so overwhelmingly proud of you, Elara."
She opens the small box. Resting on the dark satin is my grandmother's heirloom hair comb, beautifully crafted from white gold and heavily encrusted with shimmering sapphires and brilliant diamonds.
"Grandma's," I whisper, reaching up instinctively, my fingers stopping just short of the sparkling stones.
"Yes," my mom nods, a tear visibly shining in the corner of her eye. "And now, it’s officially yours."
I hold my breath as her hands tenderly pin the heavy heirloom comb into the side of my dark curls, securing the hair firmly behind my ear. It is a stunning, undeniable mark of my impending rank. She leans down, pressing a warm kiss to the side of my head. She is completely and blissfully unaware of the massive secret quietly waiting in the black box just inches from her elbow. I want to scream the news to her, to let her share in the absolute joy, but Kaelen has to be the first to know.
"Now," my mother says, her tone suddenly shifting to a brisk, business-like clip. "We need to get downstairs. We cannot have the future Luna running late to her mate's own celebration."
I grab a sheer silver shawl to drape over my exposed shoulders, grab the small black gift box, and carefully tuck it into my clutch.
The anticipated magic of the night sours almost immediately the second I step into the corridor outside the grand dining hall. Kaelen is waiting with his parents. He looks incredibly handsome in his tailored dark suit, but his posture is rigid.
I walk up to him, a hopeful, desperate smile on my lips. "Hey," I say softly, reaching out to place my hand on his arm.
Kaelen turns to look at me. His eyes rake over the silver dress. I brace myself for the awe, for the appreciation I desperately expect. I dressed up for him. I wore what his mother demanded.
Instead, his gaze hardens. He leans in, his breath brushing against my ear as he coldly murmurs, "There is a line between slutty and classy."
The words hit me like a physical slap to the face. It is a harsh, completely uncalled-for rebuke that instantly and violently drowns out my excitement. My stomach drops, leaving me feeling small, shamed, and incredibly foolish. I want to defend myself, to scream that his own mother picked this dress out, but the massive wooden doors to the dining hall swing open.
We step into the grand space. The entire pack stands to their feet, erupting into loud, thunderous applause for their future Alpha. I force my chin up, walking beside him down the center aisle, but the humiliation rapidly deepens the moment we reach the head table.
I naturally step toward the chair immediately to his right—my rightful, traditional place as his future Luna.
"Scoot down," Kaelen orders explicitly, his voice low but sharp.
I freeze, my hand hovering over the back of the chair. "What?" I whisper, genuinely confused. I always sit right next to him.
"Scoot down," he repeats, his jaw tight. "The royal prince is arriving. You need to make room."
My cheeks burn with a furious, embarrassing heat. In front of the highest-ranked members of the pack, my own mate physically pulls the chair out for me one seat over, actively forcing me to accommodate the royal guest. The physical and emotional space separating Kaelen and me suddenly feels completely agonizing.
I sit down heavily. The mandatory pack speeches begin, dragging on endlessly. I stare blankly at my empty champagne flute, painfully aware of the massive gap between my mate and me.
Then, the nightmare truly begins.
The heavy dining hall doors open again, and Lysandra arrives. The entire room seems to suck in a collective breath. She is dressed provocatively in a skin-tight, strapless black gown that flares dramatically at the bottom. Her lips are painted a deep, blood-red. She struts confidently up the center aisle, directly toward our head table. Instantly, effortlessly, she commands all of Kaelen's attention. I watch as his eyes widen, tracking her every single movement with an undeniable, sickening hunger.
Right at that moment, Prince Vandrak—the royal stranger Kaelen forced me to move for—finally takes the empty seat between us. The Prince settles in just as Lysandra passes closely behind our chairs.
The Prince glances at Lysandra, then nods respectfully in her direction. "The future Luna is quite a sight," he murmurs casually, mistakenly assuming the woman commanding the Alpha's attention is his mate.
I snap.
I grip my silver fork with white-knuckled intensity, the metal digging painfully into my palm. I turn to the royal stranger, glaring directly into his light blue eyes, forcefully correcting him. "She’s not the future Luna," I say, my voice trembling with a barely contained rage. "I am."
The Prince's eyes widen in stark surprise. He studies my face for a long, heavy second. "I meant no disrespect," he replies smoothly, though there is a sharp glint of curiosity in his gaze now.
I don't even care about his apology. My rapidly brewing anger is entirely focused on Lysandra. She blatantly leans in over the table, whispering intimately into Kaelen's ear. He pulls back slightly, but a devastatingly warm smile graces his lips. He isn't pushing her away. He is welcoming it.
Desperate to mask the jealous fury burning through my veins, I turn back to the Prince, engaging him in conversation. "I always hated these formal things," the Prince casually remarks, leaning back in his chair. "They seem so stifling. So forced."
"What would you prefer, then?" I shoot back, engaging in the sarcastic banter purely as a distraction.
"Something small. Intimate. With people I actually enjoy being around."
I let out a dry, bitter chuckle. "That sounds like a hell of an idea. Just not one suited to ranked members and their unbearable flair for showing off. Besides, what would the Lunas do then? Die from absolute boredom, most likely."
My sharp comment catches him off guard, and the Prince suddenly lets out a booming, genuine laugh. The loud sound echoes over the low hum of the dining hall. It instantly draws Kaelen's eye toward us. For a brief, triumphant second, my mate glares at the Prince sitting between us.
But my small victory is brutally short-lived. The Prince's laughter does absolutely nothing to stop Lysandra. She actively maneuvers her way around the massive head table, strutting right over to the empty seat on Kaelen's other side. Sickeningly, the ranked pack members easily and willingly shift their chairs down, happily making room for her to sit directly next to my mate.
The sheer audacity of it makes my blood boil. The evening drags on in a haze of polite conversation and forced smiles. Eventually, the Prince formally excuses himself, offering his apologies to Kaelen and Vespera before departing the packhouse. His exit signals the end of the formal festivities. The massive crowd slowly thins out, leaving only the highest-ranked members, my parents, and a few lingering stragglers scattered across the large room.
As the seat between Kaelen and me finally opens up, my suppressed anger reaches its absolute, volatile peak. Lysandra is still sitting right next to him, a smug, victorious smile plastered across her deeply painted lips.
Driven by a highly explosive mixture of spite toward her presence and the genuine, pure joy for the baby growing inside me, I decide I am done waiting. I am ending this right now. I am cementing my place at his side permanently.
I reach into my clutch and pull out the small black gift box. I slide it directly across the polished wood table, right in front of Kaelen.
"Your gift," I tell him, forcing my voice to remain steady. "I wanted to give it to you earlier, but..." I shrug, letting the sentence trail off as I shoot a highly pointed, icy glare directly at Lysandra.
Kaelen frowns, looking down at the box. Curiosity is heavily evident on his handsome face. I wait in agonizing anticipation. My stomach flutters wildly. This is the moment. This is where everything changes.
He slowly lifts the lid. He reaches inside and pulls out the folded medical paper confirming the pregnancy.
I watch his eyes scan the text. I wait for the shock. I wait for the elation. I wait for the profound relief of knowing his Alpha bloodline is secure.
Instead, a flash of undeniable, agonizing hurt intensely crosses his eyes. He stares at the paper for a long, devastating second before his jaw violently locks tight. The muscle in his cheek ticks furiously.
He slowly lowers the paper, looking directly into my eyes. His expression is terrifyingly cold.
"I wish we could have done this privately," he says. His voice is a hollow, deadened sound that sends an instant chill down my spine.
My stomach completely plummets. A rush of pure, paralyzing confusion floods my brain. Done what privately? What is he talking about?
Before I can even process the question, Kaelen stands up abruptly. His chair scrapes loudly against the stone floor, drawing the immediate attention of my parents, his parents, and every single ranked member left in the room.
He stares down at me, and then he delivers the absolute killing blow to my very soul.
Standing before the remaining pack, his voice rings out loudly and clearly: "I, Kaelen Kross, future Alpha of the Azure-Crest Territory, reject you, Elaraminta Balfour, as my mate and future Luna."
The words echo in the silent hall.
For a fraction of a second, the universe completely stops. I can't comprehend the words. My brain violently rejects the string of syllables. But my body understands them instantly.
A terrifying, all-consuming fire instantly replaces the blood in my veins. The sacred, invisible mate bond tying my soul to his violently begins to snap. It feels like thick, heavy steel cables are being ripped directly out of my chest with rusted hooks.
I completely lose the ability to breathe. I gasp, clutching my chest as the physical pain becomes absolute and all-encompassing. It violently tears through every single cell in my body, burning my nerve endings to ash. The grand dining room violently spins, the crystal chandeliers blurring into an agonizing, suffocating darkness.
I am dying. The rejection is actually killing me.
My knees give out. I collapse, my convulsing body slipping heavily from the chair. Angry shouts and horrified screams erupt around me, but they sound like they are entirely underwater. As warm, familiar hands rush forward to physically lift my collapsing body away from the cold floor, my rapidly fading vision catches one final, supremely devastating sight.
Through the tearing agony and the black spots swarming my eyes, I see Lysandra. She steps right into Kaelen's personal space, wrapping her arms around him, gently comforting my mate through the pain of the rejection he just initiated.
The suffocating darkness aggressively swallows me whole.
