Exposing the Truth

The rusted, battered frame of Kaelith’s old truck shuddered violently before the engine finally died with a wet, rattling gasp. She sat frozen in the driver's seat, her hands still gripping the cracked plastic of the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles were white. Her head was spinning, a chaotic mess of residual panic, shock, and a deep, aching hollow that sat heavy in her stomach.

The memory of that morning was a physical wound. She could still feel the phantom warmth of her fated-mate’s proximity, the way her body had recognized his before her mind could even process it. But instead of claiming her, instead of saying a single word, he had simply turned his back and walked away. The silent rejection felt like a physical tearing of her soul, leaving her completely exposed. As a half-Lycan rogue, she was already vulnerable, living on the margins of a world that despised her kind. But that rejection had stripped away the last of her defenses.

She forced herself to take a deep, shuddering breath, the damp, cool air of Silverlake City filling her lungs. She needed to move. She needed the routine of work. Labor was the only anchor she had left to keep her from drifting into total despair.

She grabbed her keys, pushed open the creaking, rusted door of her truck, and stepped out into the dark, damp alley behind the bar. The air smelled of wet asphalt, stale beer, and rotting garbage. Two massive, imposing figures were stationed by the heavy metal back door like stone pillars. Torin and Titus.

She walked toward them, her heavy boots splashing in the shallow puddles. "Torin? What’s going on?" she asked, keeping her voice as steady as possible. She kept her eyes away from Titus, the older, much larger brother. Titus was a mountain of solid muscle and hostility, and he always looked at her as if he wanted to snap her neck and dump her body in a ditch.

Torin’s face lit up. He broke into a wide, friendly grin and immediately stepped forward, pulling her into a tight, comforting hug. He smelled of rain, cheap tobacco, and leather. "Hey, tiny!" Torin said, squeezing her briefly. "We got a massive, high-security pack meeting going on inside right now, so things are a little—"

*Smack.*

Titus’s massive, heavy hand swung out, backhanding Torin hard across his broad chest. The loud, stinging slap echoed off the brick walls of the alley. Torin stumbled back a step, coughing as the wind was knocked out of him.

"What part of shut up and do your job did you not understand?" Titus growled, his voice a low, lethal hiss. He glared down at his younger brother before turning his cold, reptilian eyes onto Kaelith. "A rogue like her doesn't need to know a single thing about internal pack business. Keep your fucking mouth shut, Torin."

Kaelith’s jaw clenched. The word *rogue* always tasted like acid on her tongue, a derogatory label that marked her as trash. She stepped directly between the two brothers, her small frame completely dwarfed by their massive, muscular bulk. She placed her palm flat against Torin’s forearm, feeling the tight, angry heat of his muscles.

"Stop it," Kaelith said, her voice sharp and authoritative, cutting through the rising physical tension. "I don’t want to cause any trouble. I’m just here to start the food prep for tonight. I need to get into the kitchen. It’s on the complete opposite side of the building from the private meeting rooms, and Paxton already said I could come in early."

Titus glared down at her, his dark eyes scanning her face with deep, icy suspicion. He didn't budge. Instead, he reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and began typing a message, likely verifying her story with Paxton.

Torin rubbed the center of his chest where Titus had hit him, rolling his eyes. "Rude as always. All I said was there was a meeting. And don’t call her a fucking rogue, shit-brain."

"Watch your mouth," Titus snapped without looking up from his screen.

Torin ignored him, looking down at Kaelith with a soft expression. "So, what are you cooking today, chef? I’m expecting to be absolutely starving by six."

Kaelith forced a tight smile, trying to ignore the heavy, suffocating tension vibrating between the brothers. "I got a fresh batch of radishes and some heavy pork butts from Mindra. I’m thinking of slow-cooking them with a heavy, spiced rub until the meat just falls apart."

"Fine. You can go in," Titus interrupted, shoving his phone back into his pocket. His eyes remained cold and sharp. "Straight to the kitchen, and you are not to leave it. If I catch you wandering the halls, I'll throw you out myself. Understood?"

"Perfectly," Kaelith said dryly.

She turned back to her truck to grab her things. The two brothers were still bickering in low, hostile tones by the time she got back to the door with the first heavy cardboard box of pork.

"It would take me five minutes to help her carry these," Torin grumbled, crossing his arms.

"Paxton said stay put, dickhead," Titus snapped back, his jaw tight.

"Asshole."

"Pussy."

Kaelith rolled her eyes, ignoring their childish bickering as she pushed through the heavy metal back door and headed down the dim corridor toward her sanctuary.

The commercial kitchen was cool, bright, and silent, a clean expanse of stainless-steel prep tables, industrial sinks, and heavy ovens. Kaelith carried her boxes in one by one, her muscles straining under the weight. By the time her entire haul of fresh produce and heavy meat was scattered across the concrete floor, she was out of breath, her chest heaving.

But she didn't allow herself to stop. She couldn't. The moment she stood still, her mind would drift back to this morning. It would force her to picture his face, his heavy, possessive gaze, and the agony of him turning away from her.

With frantic, deliberate speed, she grabbed a hair tie and pulled her thick chestnut hair back into a tight, high ponytail. She shed her denim jacket, throwing it onto a nearby metal stool, and tied a heavy canvas apron tightly around her waist, pulling the straps until they bit into her skin.

She pulled out her phone, shoves her plastic earbuds deep into her ears, and cranked the volume to the absolute maximum. A loud, heavy alternative rock track blasted through her head, the heavy bass shaking her eardrums, successfully drowning out the chaotic, painful thoughts threatening to break her.

She grabbed a massive, heavy chef’s knife and went to work.

She chopped the radishes with rapid, rhythmic, aggressive strokes. *Thwack. Thwack. Thwack.* The silver blade flashed under the bright fluorescent lights, sending small red and white discs flying across the cutting board. She cut up carrots, onions, and fresh herbs, her movements fluid, rapid, and practiced.

Next, she turned to the massive slabs of raw pork butts. She mixed a dry rub in a large metal bowl—heavy quantities of smoked paprika, coarse sea salt, cracked black pepper, garlic powder, and brown sugar. She poured the thick, fragrant spice mixture over the cold, pale meat. Using her bare hands, she aggressively massaged the rub into the pork, burying her fingers into the thick layers of fat and muscle, working the spices deep into every crevice.

She swayed her hips to the heavy beat of the music, bouncing on the balls of her feet as she transferred the massive, seasoned pork butts into a heavy cast-iron roasting pan. She slid the heavy pan into the large, wood-fired oven in the corner of the kitchen and shut the heavy iron door with a loud clang.

She checked her watch. An hour had passed in a blur of loud music and intense physical labor, leaving her drenched in sweat. It would take another four or five hours for the pork to slow-roast to perfection.

She wiped her wet forehead with the hem of her apron, breathing heavily. She walked over to the oven, cracking the heavy door slightly to check the heat. A rich, savory wave of roasting pork and sweet wood smoke rolled out, coating her tongue.

But then, she froze.

Beneath the heavy, savory smell of the cooking meat, a different scent cut through the air. It was thick, warm, and sweet.

Cloves and fresh apples.

It was a heavy, intoxicating aroma that absolutely did not belong in this kitchen. It was a scent that made her blood run hot, sending a sudden, violent jolt of electricity straight to her core, pooling low in her belly.

Her heart began to slam against her ribs, a wild, frantic rhythm.

She was no longer alone.

Kaelith turned around slowly, her boots dragging against the tiled floor as she forced herself to face the doorway.

He was standing there.

Her fated-mate.

The sheer size of him seemed to fill the entire doorway, blocking out any escape. He was leaning casually against the metal frame, his massive, broad shoulders stretching the fabric of a perfectly tailored black suit. His arms were crossed over his chest, his dark, intense chocolate-brown eyes locked onto her, tracking her every movement with a cold, predatory focus.

He had thick, slightly wavy brown hair that fell just below his ears, and a dark, neatly trimmed beard that framed a sharp, hard jawline. He was incredibly tall, easily towering over Titus, with a lean waist and a powerful, muscular frame hidden beneath the expensive fabric of his suit.

Kaelith’s eyes involuntarily traveled down his torso, taking in the broad expanse of his chest, down to his waist, and then she froze. Her breath hitched in her throat as her gaze locked onto the heavy, thick outline of his hard erection, straining prominently against the tight fabric of his black trousers. Her cheeks immediately burned with a deep, furious crimson heat, a sudden wave of wetness pooling between her thighs.

She jerked her eyes back up to his, her mind spinning.

He noticed her gaze, and a slow, dark smirk curved his lips, heavy with amusement and raw, physical interest.

The distraction caused Kaelith’s fingers to lose their grip on her phone. It slipped from her hand, crashing loudly onto the tiled floor. The impact jerked the earbuds clean out of her ears. The loud music died instantly, leaving only the sound of her own ragged, shallow breathing in the silent, heavy air of the kitchen.

His eyes followed the phone as it hit the ground, and then they slowly, deliberately traveled up her body. The sheer intensity of his gaze felt like a physical hand dragging over her skin, leaving a trail of scorching, electric heat in its wake that made her nipples harden beneath her shirt.

"Wha-what are you doing here?" Kaelith finally managed to stammer, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound strong.

He did not say a word.

Instead, he slowly pushed himself off the doorframe and began to walk toward her. His strides were slow, heavy, and predatory. With every step he took, his heavy, intoxicating scent of cloves and apples grew stronger, filling the room, suffocating her. Her heart rate skyrocketed, her chest heaving as she tried to inhale enough air.

By the time he stopped, he was standing directly in front of her. His massive, hot body was pressed flush against hers. She could feel the hard, solid muscle of his chest through his suit, and the thick heat of his erection pressing heavily against her lower belly.

Kaelith stared at his chest, her nails digging hard into her palms to stop herself from reaching out to grab him. Her eyes traced the dark pulse point beating rapidly in his exposed throat before she forced herself to look up into his eyes.

Suddenly, he reached up. His large, calloused, warm hands wrapped firmly around her neck, his fingers spreading wide across her skin.

Kaelith gasps aloud at the intense, scorching heat of his touch. It felt like raw electricity surging straight into her veins.

A deep, animalistic groan rumbled from his chest. His eyes flashed a deep, pitch-black color, his pupils expanding until the brown was completely gone. For a brief, feral second, he looks like a wild beast ready to tear her apart. Then, his jaw tightened, his muscles straining as he forced himself to regain control, the blackness slowly receding.

"What is in your eye?" he asked. His voice was a deep, rough baritone that vibrated through her skin, making her body flush with a sudden, overwhelming wave of heat.

"What?" Kaelith breathed.

Unable to control her body’s desperate urge for contact, her hands reached out and gripped the sharp lapels of his black suit jacket, clinging to him for support as her knees turned to water.

His eyes darted down to her hands on his jacket, then snapped back to her face. He took another step forward, crowding her, forcing her back until her lower back hit the hard, cold edge of the stainless-steel prep counter.

"Your eye," he said, his voice low and demanding. "There is something in it. Take it out."

Kaelith hesitated, her breath hitching. She looked into his dark eyes, searching for a way out, but there was none. She slowly snaked her hand up between their tightly pressed bodies, her fingers brushing against the hot fabric of his shirt, feeling the rapid beat of his heart beneath.

She tilted her head back, using her index finger and thumb to carefully pinch the thin, brown contact lens from her right eye.

She blinked a few times, clearing her vision, and looked up at him.

The contrast was striking. Her left eye was her natural, normal brown, but her right eye was now a brilliant, piercing, electric blue iris—the unmistakable mark of her Lycan heritage.

His jaw ticked violently. His eyes blackened again for a split second as they darted rapidly back and forth between her brown eye and the shocking blue one.

"You’re a rogue," he said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp laced with deep shock.

The derogatory term immediately made Kaelith bristle with anger. She tightened her grip on his lapels, her chin lifting defiantly.

"Yeah? And?" she snapped, her voice sharp. "You got a problem with that?"

She tried to ignore the intense, burning sparks of electricity crackling between their bodies where they touched.

In response, his hands tightened slightly around her neck. He slid his large thumbs under her jawline, applying firm, steady pressure to tilt her head back, forcing her to look directly into his dark eyes.

"You’re half-Lycan," he stated, his voice heavy with realization.

"I am," she said, refusing to back down.

His eyes roamed over her face, scanning her features as if trying to piece together a puzzle that didn't make sense.

The physical proximity, the heat of his body, and the overwhelming scent of him were starting to choke her. She needed room to breathe, room to think. She placed her palms flat against his broad, muscular chest and pushed hard.

He let out a low, warning growl, his chest vibrating under her hands. For a second, she thought he won't budge, but then he slowly retreated a single step, releasing her neck and shoving his hands deep into his suit trousers.

Kaelith leaned back against the hard metal counter, taking a deep, ragged breath of cooler air.

"Look," she said, her voice steadying. "To save you the time and brainpower, I don't know much about my own past. I was abandoned at an orphanage when I was a baby. I have no idea who my parents are, or where I came from."

She looked away for a brief moment, her eyes darkening as a painful memory threatened to surface. "I only found out I was part Lycan a couple of years ago. It doesn't matter how. But I *chose* to become a rogue shortly after that. I came to Silverlake City for one reason: to find a safe, quiet life. That's it."

He watched her closely, his eyes narrowing with deep suspicion. "Which pack raised you?"

"I'm not answering that," Kaelith said firmly, her jaw setting. "It isn't important."

"I think it is," he countered, his voice low and demanding.

"Well, I don't," Kaelith snapped, her eyes flashing with defiance. "I completely severed all connections with that pack and their Alpha. I will not discuss them. Ever."

A slow, dark smirk began to carve its way onto his lips. It was a highly satisfied, deeply possessive look that sent a sudden rush of heat straight to her core. He looked around the messy kitchen, taking in the scattered vegetables and the heavy pots, before his eyes drifted back to her.

He looked down at her body, his gaze lingering on her flour-dusted, food-stained canvas apron.

"What is your name, chef?" he asked, his voice dropping to a low, husky rumble.

Kaelith let out a small, breathless laugh. It was absurd. She was standing in a commercial kitchen with her fated-mate, a man she knew absolutely nothing about, yet her body was screaming for him, recognizing him as her other half.

She shifted her weight, her arms crossing over her chest, which unintentionally pushed her breasts upward against the tight apron. His eyes instantly darkened, his gaze locking onto her chest before snapping back to her lips.

"Kaelith," she said.

A low, deep purr rumbles from his chest. The sound was raw, animalistic, and incredibly hot.

Before she could react, he stepped forward, closing the small distance between them. He placed his large hands flat on the metal counter on either side of her hips, caging her in against the cold steel. His massive, powerful frame loomed over her, completely blocking out the rest of the room.

He dipped his head, his nose dragging slowly up the sensitive, hot skin of her neck, inhaling her sweet scent of citrus and cream deeply.

Kaelith’s eyelids fluttered shut, her breath escaping in a soft gasp as her head fell back.

"Kaelith," he breathed against her ear, his hot breath brushing her skin. He leaned in closer, his teeth grazing her sensitive earlobe, giving it a gentle, sharp nibble. "Seems I should have been more adamant on meeting you... fated-mate."
