A Rogue Scent

Graeven forced his shoulders back, adopting a stiff, formal posture as he fell into step behind Alpha Valen. His gaze remained locked on the path ahead, but his mind was an absolute mess. He was supposed to be the lead security officer, the shield protecting the most powerful Lycan Alpha in the territory. Yet right now, he couldn't focus on his duty if his life depended on it.

His thoughts were completely trapped back at the farmer's market.

The image of the beautiful, light-chestnut-haired woman was burned into his mind. He couldn't shake the vivid memory of her sparkling eyes—one brighter than the other, as if she wore a single contact lens—and the way her soft, full lips had parted when they locked eyes. He had seen the raw, stabbing look of disappointment and hurt that had crossed her face when he turned his back and walked away. The memory made his chest ache with a phantom, tightening pain.

*His fated mate.* The reality of it still made his inner beast roar with a mixture of possessiveness and frustration. The moment he had stepped out of their black SUV earlier, the thick, mouthwatering scent of sweet cream and fresh oranges had hit his senses like a physical wall. At first, he’d thought it was just some vendor at the market, but the aroma was too pure, too intoxicating. It had wrapped around his neck and pulled at his soul, distracting him from his critical task of keeping Valen, Malachi, and Silas safe.

Then he had seen her. She was holding onto a metal tent pole, and when she smiled at him, his entire world had shattered. His heart rate had shot through the roof. The sheer beauty of her soft, freckled skin and her perfectly curved waist had sent a jolt of raw arousal straight to his groin. He’d wanted to abandon everything, march over, and claim her right there in the dirt. But duty had pulled him away. Valen had growled a low warning, and Graeven had been forced to take a step back, leaving her behind.

*Graeven, what the fuck? Where are you?* Valen’s voice had thundered through the pack link, snapping him back to reality. He had no choice but to follow.

"You might want to keep your wits about you, Grae," Silas teased from behind him, his voice dripping with an irritating, smug humor as their destination came into view. "The owner of the Hound, Paxton, might just pounce on you if you look that distracted."

Graeven rolled his eyes but didn't bother to reply. Silas never let him forget that Paxton, the openly gay owner of The Howling Hound, had made a pass at him years ago. Graeven had turned him down, but he still frequented the bar's grill on his Saturdays off. For the past five years, the grill's weekend chef had been preparing dishes that were impossible to resist. Graeven had tried to find out who the chef was, but the bartenders only laughed and tried to flirt with him instead. So, he had contented himself with sitting in the back corner, enjoying the ever-changing menu whenever he had a free Saturday.

But today wasn't about food. Today was a distress call.

The Howling Hound's back entrance was quiet as they approached. Paxton was already waiting at the door, his eyes shifting nervously.

"Sorry you had to walk, Alpha Valen," Paxton said, offering a respectful nod. "The farmers' market should be wrapped up by the time your meeting ends. You can have your drivers pick you up right here."

"Not a problem," Valen replied, sliding his phone into his pocket and shaking Paxton’s hand. He eyed the two burly security guards flanking the entrance. "Do you have a private room set aside for us?"

"Yes, sir. There won't be anyone else in the building besides myself while you talk."

"Good." Valen nodded, gesturing for Silas and Malachi to enter first.

Graeven lingered at the threshold, his sharp eyes scanning the alleyway and checking the surrounding rooftops for any potential threats. As he finally stepped inside, he heard Paxton whispering sharply to the two guards at the door. "Remember what we discussed. Nobody gets in. Just shut up and do your job and we'll be fine."

Graeven’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he dismissed the hushed warning as standard operational paranoia. He focused on his task, scanning every room they passed. The interior of the bar was dim and quiet, smelling of old wood, stale beer, and grease. Valen and the others waited in the lounge while Paxton gestured toward a door in the middle of the hallway.

Valen gave Graeven a silent nod. Graeven and Malachi split up, checking the adjacent empty rooms to ensure the area was completely secure before Graeven finally pushed open the meeting room door.

Inside, Alpha Nash and his two subordinates were already waiting. The moment Valen crossed the threshold, the air in the small room grew twice as heavy. The sheer dominance of the Lycan Alpha's presence made Nash's men visibly stiffen.

"Alpha Nash," Valen greeted, extending a hand.

Nash swallowed hard, gripping Valen’s hand with obvious trepidation. "Thank you for coming, Alpha Valen."

"The safety of your pack impacts the safety of mine, Nash. I appreciate you bringing this matter to us. I know from experience how difficult it is to ask for help," Valen said, pulling out a heavy wooden chair and sitting down. He was eager to get straight to business. "Now sit, and tell me what you have been dealing with."

Nash let out a shaky sigh of relief as he took his seat. "Right. Well, we discovered the problem about six months ago. It started off small—just the faint whiff of a rogue here and there along our northern borders. Nothing unusual, as you know."

"Of course," Valen agreed, his expression neutral.

Graeven positioned himself against the wall near the door, crossing his arms. He listened carefully, his mind analyzing every word. Since Nash's pack shared a border with Blackwood territory, any security threat they faced would inevitably spill over into their own lands.

"About three months ago, we sighted a coordinated group of them. Maybe four?" Nash looked to his beta, who gave a firm nod of agreement. "They scattered the moment my patrol made them. We lost their scent about two miles north and didn't have another sighting for a month. We figured we'd scared them off for good." Nash shook his head, a grim expression settling over his face. "Then we spotted two separate groups of four on opposite ends of our borders. They were actively testing our fences. Luckily, because we modeled our security system after yours, they weren't able to breach them, but..."

"It's disturbing to hear," Valen interrupted, his fingers tapping a slow, rhythmic beat against the edge of the table. "Any idea what they were after?" He pulled a cigarette from his jacket pocket, lighting it and offering one to the visibly nervous Alpha.

Nash shook his head, declining the cigarette. "No idea! We don't have any enemies. We haven't accepted any new members in over a year. There are no pending land disputes, no valuable resources, nothing that would justify this kind of targeted harassment."

Valen took a slow drag, exhaling a thin cloud of gray smoke. He watched Nash through the haze, his eyes cold and calculating. "Why do I get the impression you have an idea of what they want, but you're just too afraid to voice it?"

Nash shifted uncomfortably, glancing at his beta. The beta took a deep breath and spoke up. "It's the specific perimeters they were trying to breach that has us concerned, Alpha Valen."

"What about them?"

"They've only been spotted near the fences that border your own territory."

Valen glanced back at Graeven, who slowly shook his head. "We haven't had any unusual rogue activity on our side," Graeven reported, his voice low and steady. "Just a stray wolf here and there. They've all been captured, interrogated, and released with a warning and a *friendly reminder*."

Any rogue caught trespassing on Blackwood land was branded with a heated iron. It was a brutal but effective way to ensure they didn't try the same stunt twice.

The man sitting to the left of Nash reached into a folder, pulled out a glossy photograph, and slid it across the table. Valen gave it a brief glance before holding it over his shoulder. Graeven stepped forward and took the picture. His brow furrowed as his eyes locked onto the image.

It was a close-up of a wolf's skin, raw and blistered. Burned deep into the flesh was the distinct, charred brand that the Blackwood pack used to mark intruders.

"That *friendly reminder*?" the beta asked, a faint, mocking smirk playing on his lips.

Graeven leveled a cold, lethal glare at the beta. Within two seconds, the man’s smirk vanished, and he quickly bowed his head in submission. "When did you take this?" Graeven demanded.

"Two weeks ago," Nash replied.

"It's not the first one, I assume," Valen guessed, taking another drag of his cigarette.

"Or the last," Nash confirmed grimly.

"Well, whoever they are, they've been smart enough not to get caught by us a second time," Malachi chimed in from the side of the room.

"And you have no idea what they are searching for?" Graeven asked, his voice sharp. "You've captured several of these branded rogues, and you've gotten absolutely nothing out of them?"

The beta’s face flushed red with defensive anger. "It's not like we didn't try to interrogate them!"

"Well, whatever methods you are using, they clearly need to—"

"None of them had tongues," Nash interjected, his shoulders bristling as he stared at Graeven.

The room fell silent. Valen shot a warning look at Nash, a silent reminder of who was in charge and who was begging for help. "Tongues or not, there are always ways to get answers," Valen said coldly.

"That's exactly why we called you," Nash said, leaning forward. "We think we can help each other out."

"You've captured another one?" Valen asked.

The Alpha and his beta exchanged a quick, loaded look. "We did," Nash admitted. "But... he managed to escape."

"When?" Graeven snapped.

Nash kept his eyes fixed on Valen, avoiding Graeven's harsh gaze. "Last night. He headed west. Our scouts were able to track him for a couple of miles before they completely lost his scent in the rocky terrain. We called you because we need more than just security forces. We... we need a tracker." Nash finally looked up, his eyes pleading as they landed on Graeven.

Valen looked back over his shoulder, silently seeking Graeven's confirmation.

Graeven crossed his arms, his expression stoic, and gave a single, firm nod. "You've got him," Valen agreed, standing up from the table. "My enforcement team will take it from here. We'll assist you with your rogue problem, and we will discuss the compensation for our services once the job is complete. My team will meet at your packhouse by tonight to gather what they need, and then they'll set out. We should have some answers for you within two days."

Valen extended his hand. Nash shook it, looking unsure of whether he should be pleased with the arrangement, but too terrified of the Lycan Alpha to say no.

Silas and Malachi immediately preceded Valen out of the room, conducting a quick, routine sweep of the corridor to ensure the path was clear. Valen stepped out, took two paces down the hallway, and suddenly came to a dead halt.

Graeven, who was following closely, stopped instantly.

*Orange and sweet cream.*

The scent hit Graeven’s nostrils like a physical blow. It was thick, overpowering, and completely saturated the air of the narrow hallway. A rush of saliva filled his mouth, and he had to clench his jaw so hard his teeth gritted together to keep from groaning aloud. His inner beast thrashed against his ribs, demanding he follow the scent and claim what was theirs.

"You smell it too," Valen said quietly, his nostrils flaring as he slowly turned to face Graeven.

Graeven’s heart hammered violently against his ribs. He tried to keep his face completely blank. "You... you can smell it?"

Of course, everyone could scent his fated mate, but Graeven prayed the Alpha wouldn't realize the sheer intensity of the bond, or notice how close Graeven was to losing control.

Valen’s eyes narrowed into slits, his expression hardening. "Rogue."

Graeven’s eyebrows crashed together in sudden, agonizing realization. He inhaled again, this time ignoring the sweet, addictive top notes of citrus and cream, and focused on the deeper layers of the scent. And there it was, buried beneath the intoxicating sweetness of his fated mate’s aroma—the unmistakable, sour, greasy stench of an unregistered rogue wolf.

The truth hit him like a physical blow. His fated mate, the beautiful woman from the market, was a rogue.

Desperate to protect her from his packmates, Graeven took a step forward, blocking Valen's line of sight. "I'll find it," Graeven urged, his voice tight with forced composure. "Get to the car. If there's a rogue lurking in this building, I'll flush them out myself. You don't need to waste your time on a stray. Go. I'll meet you outside."

Valen stared at him for a tense second, his sharp eyes searching Graeven’s face, before giving a curt nod. "Make it quick."

Without waiting for Silas or Malachi to follow, Graeven turned and hurried down the staff hallway. He needed to find her before anyone else did. He checked the empty rooms and storage closets as he went, his senses locked onto the sweet citrus aroma that was now fighting against the sour stench of a rogue.

As he reached the end of the corridor, the faint, melodic sound of a sweet singing voice echoed through the air, accompanied by the clatter of metal pans sliding over stove grates.

Graeven followed the sound, his heart pounding in his chest. He stopped in front of a set of heavy double doors that stood propped open, leading into a glistening, stainless-steel commercial kitchen.

He pushed the door open slightly and froze.

There she was.

His fated mate was bending over a hot, open oven, her back turned to him as she inhaled the warm scent of whatever was baking inside. She was wearing tight, black yoga pants that hugged her perfect, rounded curves in a way that left absolutely nothing to the imagination.

The sight sent a jolt of raw, primal lust straight to Graeven's core. His muscles strained with the desperate, burning need to walk over, wrap his arms around her waist, and pull her tight against his body. For the first time in his life, he felt completely helpless against his body's physical reactions. His dick hardened instantly, pressing painfully against the fabric of his trousers.

As his heavy, predatory presence filled the room, her singing began to soften, then stopped altogether.

She stood up slowly, her shoulders tensing as she sensed him behind her. She turned around, and her wide, asymmetric eyes slowly raked down his massive frame. As her gaze traveled from his broad shoulders down to his waist, taking in the unmistakable tightness of his trousers, a deep, furious crimson blush spread rapidly across her cheeks and down her neck.

Her fingers went completely limp. The smartphone she had been holding slipped from her hand, clattering loudly against the tiled kitchen floor.

"Wha-What are you doing here?" she whispered.
