Princess in Exile

The circle of rogues closed in, their breath hot and foul, smelling of rot and unwashed skin. Lyra’s back hit the rough wood of the cart, the splinters digging into her skin, but that was nothing compared to the predatory hunger gleaming in the eyes of the fifty men surrounding her.

"No... STOP!" Lyra screamed, her voice cracking as she curled into a ball. "Get away from me!"

The leader, a massive man with a jagged scar across his throat, cackled. The sound was like dry leaves being crushed. "Away from you? Your Alpha gave you to us, princess. Do you understand? Most of us haven’t had a woman in months, maybe years. We’re going to have a lot of fun tonight. And we’ve got all night."

Lyra felt the air leave her lungs. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. One of the rogues scrambled onto the cart, his eyes roaming over her with a sickening, oily lust. He didn't waste time; he grabbed her hair, untied the rough cords binding her wrists, and dragged her down into the dirt with a violent jerk.

She hit the ground hard, the impact jarring her bones. As the rogues began to crowd around her, their filthy hands reaching out, a spark of desperate survival flared in her chest.

"WAIT!" she shrieked, her voice piercing the low growls of the men. "I... I can give you money! More money than you can possibly imagine!"

The movements stopped. For a second, the only sound was the rustle of the wind in the trees. Then, the forest erupted in mocking laughter.

"Did you hear that?" the scarred leader barked, clutching his stomach as he roared. "The beauty says she has money! Hell, sweetheart, if you had money, why would Alpha Alaric ship you to us like a piece of discarded meat?"

"I am the only daughter of the Sterlings!" Lyra’s voice trembled, but she pushed the words out. "We are the wealthiest family in the Argent Edge Pack! My father... he has millions!"

The name 'Sterling' made several rogues hesitate. Even in the lawless fringes of the territories, the Sterling name carried weight. It was synonymous with gold, diamonds, and a lifestyle that most wolves couldn't even dream of.

The leader narrowed his eyes, the greed in them warring with his lust. He spat on the ground and stepped closer. "Fine. But we want a hundred million. Not a cent less."

A hundred million. Lyra’s throat went dry. It was a staggering amount—a ransom her parents would never pay for a daughter they had already deemed worthless. But they didn't know everything. Over the years, Lyra hadn't just been a quiet, rejected Luna. She had been smart. She had built her own accounts, moving money through offshore investments and business ventures outside the pack’s control. It was her secret life, her "gold mine" that she’d intended to use if she ever managed to escape Alaric.

"O—OK," Lyra gasped, her hands shaking. "Give me a phone. I’ll call my asset manager. I’ll transfer it right now."

The leader pulled a battered, grimy cell phone from his pocket and tossed it at her feet. Lyra scrambled for it, her fingers fumbling as she dialed a number she had memorized years ago.

The line clicked. "Hello?" a cold, professional voice answered.

"It’s me, Lyra!" she whispered urgently, her eyes darting toward the rogues who were watching her like vultures. "Listen, I need a hundred million transferred to an account immediately. I’ll give you the routing number—"

"All your assets are frozen, Miss Sterling."

Lyra froze. The blood drained from her face. "What? Why? That’s impossible!"

"Your parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sterling, confiscated everything this morning. Cash, stocks, jewelry, real estate... everything has been reclaimed by the family estate."

"They can't do that!" Lyra’s voice rose to a panicked pitch. "That’s my money! I earned it! It has nothing to do with the Sterling accounts!"

"According to the legal documents your father filed, everything you own belongs to the Sterling name," the manager said, his tone devoid of any sympathy. "They noted that since you are being... relocated... you won't be needing any currency where you are going. The 'gold mine' is now theirs."

The line went dead.

The phone slipped from Lyra’s hand, clattering against a stone. She felt a hollow, sickening void open in her chest. They hadn't just thrown her away; they had robbed her of her only means of survival. They wanted her dead. They wanted her to suffer at the hands of these monsters with no way out.

"Well?" the leader growled, stepping into her personal space. "When do we see the hundred million?"

"It’s... it’s not happening," Lyra sobbed, the reality of her betrayal crashing down on her. "My parents... they took it all. I have nothing."

"WHAT?!" The rogue’s face contorted with fury. He reached down and grabbed her by the collar of her shirt, hoisting her up. "So you don't have a damn thing? This fucking bitch lied to us!"

The mood shifted instantly. The greed vanished, replaced by a violent, vengeful rage. The rogues swarmed. Filthy fingers clawed at her clothes, the fabric tearing with a sickening sound. Lyra felt the cold night air hit her skin as they ripped at her, their laughter turning into guttural snarls.

Her heart pounded so hard she thought it would explode. *No. Not like this.*

As one rogue reached for her, his face twisted in a sneer, Lyra seized a moment of pure, raw adrenaline. She coiled her leg and kicked out with everything she had, her heel slamming directly into the leader’s stomach.

"FUCK—" He doubled over, gasping for air as he staggered back.

Lyra didn't wait. She scrambled to her feet, ducking under the arms of another man, and bolted. She didn't look back. She crashed into the dense forest, her bare feet hitting sharp stones and rotting logs. She ran blindly, the branches whipping against her face, her lungs burning like she was inhaling molten lead.

"Don't let her get away!" the shouts echoed behind her. "Catch the bitch! I want her legs broken!"

Lyra’s breath was ragged. Her chest felt like it was on fire, but she kept going, her eyes darting through the darkness for a cave, a hollow log, anything. She was a wolf, but she was malnourished and broken; she couldn't outrun fifty healthy males for long.

*CRACK.*

A gunshot rang out, shattering the silence of the night.

"AHHH!"

Lyra screamed as a searing, white-hot pain exploded in her leg. The force of the impact sent her spinning. She crashed into the mud, her leg buckling beneath her. She tried to crawl, her fingers digging into the wet earth, but the pain was blinding.

She rolled onto her back, gasping, her vision starting to blur at the edges. She could hear them—the heavy footfalls of the rogues, the sound of snapping twigs getting closer and closer.

*This is it,* she thought, a bitter tear rolling down her cheek. *I hate them.*

She hated Selene for her lies. She hated Alaric for his cruelty. She hated her parents for their cold-blooded betrayal. They were probably back at the packhouse right now, clinking glasses of expensive wine, celebrating her "departure," while she lay dying in the mud like an animal.

"Who goes there!" a voice boomed from the depths of the woods.

It wasn't a rogue's voice. It was deep, authoritative, and carried a power that made the very ground vibrate.

"FUCK! It’s the Astral Lune patrol!" one of the rogues screamed in terror.

The woods erupted in chaos, but this time, the rogues weren't the predators. A group of soldiers clad in gleaming silver armor emerged from the shadows like ghosts. They moved with a terrifying, synchronized precision that the ragtag rogues couldn't hope to match.

The Astral Lune Pack.

Lyra had heard the stories. They were the most powerful pack in the world, ruled by a bloodline so ancient and potent that even Alpha Alaric spoke of them with a mixture of envy and fear. They didn't just protect their borders; they dominated them.

Within seconds, the rogues were fleeing in every direction, their bravado replaced by sheer, unadulterated panic. Those who were too slow didn't even have time to scream before the silver-armored warriors cut them down.

Lyra lay still, her breathing shallow. A soldier knelt beside her, the moonlight reflecting off his visor. He pulled back his helmet, revealing a stern but concerned face.

"Miss? Can you hear me?" his voice was surprisingly gentle.

Lyra’s lips moved, but no sound came out. She was fading, the world turning into a gray haze.

"We’ve got a wounded she-wolf!" the soldier called out to his unit. "She’s lost a lot of blood. We need a medic and transport to the medical facility, now!"

Another soldier approached, squinting at Lyra’s face. He gasped, his eyes widening. "Wait... I recognize her. That’s Alpha Alaric’s Luna. From the Argent Edge Pack."

"The one he rejected?" the first soldier asked, his brow furrowing. "The news reached the capital two days ago. He just dumped her in the rogue territories?"

"Looks like it."

The first soldier looked down at Lyra’s pale, battered form. His jaw tightened. "The Astral Lune Pack isn't afraid of a small, pathetic pack like Argent Edge. If Alaric has a problem with us 'interfering' with his discarded property, he can take it up with Alpha Leander. For now, this girl is under our protection. Move her!"

Lyra felt herself being lifted. The transition was agonizing, but the warmth of a thick wool blanket and the steady hum of a vehicle soon followed. She drifted in and out of consciousness, the smell of forest floor replaced by the sharp, sterile scent of disinfectant.

She was vaguely aware of being moved onto a stretcher, of bright lights overhead that burned her eyes. Figures in white coats swarmed around her, their voices a muffled buzz until a sharp intake of breath cut through the noise.

"Oh my god... look."

"Is that...?"

"Look at the birthmark on her lower back. Right there."

Lyra tried to lift her eyelids, but they felt like lead. She heard a rustle of paper, the clicking of a camera, and then an urgent, panicked whisper.

"Get the Alpha. Tell Alpha Leander to drop everything and get to the medical wing. The person he’s been searching for... for twenty years... she’s here."

***

Across the sprawling, opulent territory of the Astral Lune Pack, Alpha Leander Valerius sat in his private suite. The room was a testament to his power—high ceilings, dark mahogany, and floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over a kingdom built on strength and loyalty.

But Leander’s mind wasn't on his kingdom. He was staring at a faded photograph of a baby girl, his jaw clenched in a grief that two decades hadn't been able to dull.

The door to his suite burst open, the heavy wood slamming against the wall. A soldier stood there, chest heaving, his face flushed with a mixture of shock and pure, unbridled joy.

"Alpha Leander!" the soldier shouted, stumbling into the room.

Leander stood up, his presence filling the space with a suffocating, Alpha pressure. "This better be a matter of life or death, Commander."

"It’s both, sire! The patrol... they brought in a woman. A stray from the Argent Edge border." The soldier’s voice cracked. "She has it. The moon-shaped birthmark. On her lower back."

Leander froze. The air in the room seemed to solidify. "What did you say?"

"The birthmark, Alpha. And the age... the scent profile... it matches. The doctors just ran a preliminary DNA scan against the royal records." The soldier nodded vigorously, tears pricking his eyes. "Twenty years ago, there was a mistake in that delivery room... a swap. The Sterling girl wasn't theirs. She’s yours. She’s the princess."

Leander’s hands began to shake. The powerful Alpha, a man who had led armies and executed traitors without blinking, felt his knees go weak. He lunged forward, grabbing the soldier by the shoulders.

"My sister?" he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "She’s alive? She’s here?"

"She’s in the medical wing, Alpha. She’s injured, but she’s alive."

A roar of pure, primal triumph erupted from Leander’s chest, a sound that echoed through the entire palace. But beneath the joy, a dark, cold fury began to take root.

He knew who she had been living with. He knew about the rejection. He knew how the Argent Edge Pack had treated their "commoner" Luna.

"My sister is the long-lost princess of the Astral Lune Pack," Leander growled, his eyes glowing a fierce, golden amber. "And those bastards treated her like trash."

He turned toward the door, his cloak billowing behind him like a storm cloud. "Take me to her. Now. And prepare the warriors. If the Argent Edge Pack thinks they can discard a Valerius and walk away unscathed, they are about to learn what true hell looks like."
