Chapter 2: The Abyss
Amelia POV
The darkness of the Crimson Crescent dungeons didn't just hide the mold; it actively consumed light. I had been rotting down here for what felt like an eternity, though the dripping water from the cracked ceiling suggested it had only been four days.
Four days since the grand pack dinner where Margaret had flawlessly executed my demise.
I hadn't even spoken a word to Brandon since the incident on the training field. I had purposely made myself invisible. But my mere existence as his true mate was a loose end Margaret refused to tolerate. During the highly anticipated Luna-naming banquet, I was ordered to serve the Alpha's table. As I approached with a heavy tray of imported crystal wine glasses, Margaret had subtly, casually extended her stiletto.
I tripped. The crystal shattered flawlessly across the pristine marble.
When the commotion settled, Margaret was weeping, delicately holding a bleeding, microscopic scratch on her ankle, screaming that I had intentionally tried to severely maim the future Luna out of sheer, jealous spite. I didn't even get a chance to open my mouth. Brandon had risen from his massive oak chair, the sheer force of his Alpha aura crushing the air out of my lungs, and ordered me thrown into the abyss.
My ribs pulsed with a sickening, hot pain—a souvenir from the guards who dragged me down here. I was curled into a tight, shivering ball on the freezing stone, hugging my knees simply to keep my teeth from loudly chattering.
Suddenly, the heavy iron gears of the dungeon door groaned, protesting loudly against the dampness. A sliver of blinding, golden torchlight pierced my sanctuary of shadows.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed on the stone stairs. I didn't need to look up. The oppressive, intoxicating scent of pine and earth flooded the small cell, instantly making my stomach violently churn with a toxic mixture of instinctual craving and bone-deep revulsion.
Alpha Brandon stepped into the light, his massive frame completely dwarfing the cell.
"Get up," he commanded.
I lacked the fundamental strength to obey. I simply tilted my head, my dirty, matted blonde hair clinging to my pale, bruised cheek. "Come to finally kill me yourself, Alpha?" my voice was shockingly hoarse, sounding like dry leaves scraping against pavement.
Brandon’s jaw ticked. He crouched down, close enough that the heat radiating from his massive body mocked my freezing skin. "You are a complication, Amelia. A completely insignificant, pathetic glitch in a lineage that requires absolute perfection. Margaret brings the military might of the Ironwood pack. What exactly do you bring? Filth? Weakness?"
Tears burned my eyes, but a sudden, unfamiliar flare of white-hot anger finally burned through my despair. Sophia bared her teeth in the dark. "I bring the truth," I spat softly. "The Goddess chose me. Not her."
His hand shot out faster than a viper, his thick fingers wrapping violently around my throat. He slammed my head back against the damp stone wall. Sparks exploded in my vision.
"The Goddess made a mistake," he snarled, his amber eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred. He leaned in, his breath hot against my ear, delivering the lethal blow not with his claws, but with a ceremonial, ancient incantation that carried the weight of our ancestors.
"I, Alpha Brandon Thorne of the Crimson Crescent Pack, formally and absolutely reject you, Amelia Crawford, as my fated mate."
It wasn't a knife this time. It was a bomb.
An ethereal, explosive force violently ruptured inside my chest. It felt as if my very soul was being ripped directly out through my sternum, heavily drenched in acid. A horrific, guttural scream tore itself from my raw throat—a sound so purely agonizing it didn't even sound human. I violently thrashed against his grip, my nails frantically clawing at his thick wrist, drawing blood, but he didn't even flinch. He just watched me burn.
The golden, invisible tether that connected our souls snapped with a deafening, metaphysical crack.
The last thing I saw before the crushing, blissful blackness completely consumed me was the sheer, terrifying indifference on my mate's face as he dropped my limp body back onto the freezing stone.
