Chapter 1: The Scent of Treason

Amelia POV

The mud on the training field was freezing, seeping through the thin soles of my worn boots, but it was nothing compared to the ice suddenly crystallizing in my veins.

For eighteen years, I had survived in the Crimson Crescent pack as a ghost. An orphaned omega, kept alive only to scrub the marble floors that Alpha Brandon Thorne walked upon and to fetch the almond lattes his vicious betrothed, Margaret, demanded every dawn. I had endured the slaps, the starvation, and the sickeningly sweet scent of Margaret’s floral perfume that constantly choked the packhouse. I endured it all for one solitary reason: my eighteenth birthday. The day the Moon Goddess would finally reveal my fated mate, my ticket out of this hell.

And she did. Right here. Right now.

But it wasn't salvation. It was a death sentence.

The smell of dark pine, damp earth, and heavy musk hit my senses with the violence of a physical blow. My dormant wolf, Sophia, clawed frantically at the confines of my mind, howling a singular, desperate word: *Mate.*

My breath hitched, my stormy gray eyes snapping toward the center of the sparing ring. There he stood. Alpha Brandon. His broad, sweat-slicked back was turned to me, muscles coiling like thick steel cables as he easily disarmed his Beta. He was magnificent, a god among wolves. But the intoxicating pull of the mate bond was immediately poisoned by the horrific reality of who he was.

As if feeling the sudden, seismic shift in the air, Brandon froze. He dropped the wooden sparring sword, turning slowly. Our eyes locked across the crowded courtyard.

For a fraction of a second, I saw it—the primal flare of amber recognition, the dilation of his pupils. The bond struck him just as hard. A foolish, reckless ember of hope flared in my chest. *He knows. He feels it.* My feet moved on their own, a desperate step forward.

But then, the amber fire in his eyes was violently extinguished, replaced by a glacial, horrifying disgust.

"Brandon, darling!"

Margaret’s shrill voice sliced through the heavy tension like a butcher's knife. I didn't even see her coming before her sharp shoulder slammed intentionally into my collarbone, sending me stumbling backward into the dirt. She didn't spare me a glance. She glided directly into Brandon’s personal space, wrapping her manicured hands possessively around his thick neck.

I waited on my knees in the mud, my breath suspended, waiting for my mate to push her away. Waiting for him to claim me.

Instead, Brandon’s jaw clenched. He looked directly over Margaret's shoulder, his eyes boring into mine with a silent, lethal warning. *Say nothing. You are nothing.* And then, with deliberate, agonizing slowness, he lowered his head and captured Margaret’s lips in a deep, bruising kiss in front of the entire cheering pack.

The severing of a mate bond wasn't a metaphor. It felt as though a serrated hunting knife was jammed directly underneath my ribs, violently twisting and carving out my beating heart. Sophia screamed—a bloodcurdling, agonizing sound of pure betrayal that echoed only in my mind. I clamped a filthy hand over my mouth to stifle my own sob, tasting dirt and iron.

I scrambled backward, my vision tunneling. He wasn't my savior. The Goddess hadn't granted me an escape; she had delivered me directly to my executioner. I had to run. But as I turned to flee into the shadows of the packhouse, I collided squarely with the solid, unforgiving chest of Rebecca, the head maid.

"Well," she sneered, her fingers painfully twisting into the fraying collar of my shirt, her eyes gleaming with malicious understanding. "Looks like the little stray finally realized she doesn't belong at the high table."
