The Carrington Conflict

The elevator doors hissed shut, sealing them inside the polished stainless-steel box. The ambient, low-frequency hum of the corporate building vanished, abruptly replaced by a suffocating, heavy silence. Valeria didn't bother to maintain the professional, composed mask she had worn in front of Marcella. She turned, her gaze raking over Kaelen with raw, undisguised contempt, her heels clicking sharply against the metal floor like the ticking of a countdown clock.

"I don't know what kind of game you're playing or what twisted lies you whispered to make Ms. Highborne lose her mind, but it ends now." She waved a dismissive hand at his casual attire, her lip curling. "Take a good look in the mirror. You’re out of your league here, and you are a massive liability. If you have any scrap of sense, you’ll walk away before you burn this company to the ground."

Kaelen didn't even turn his head. He leaned back against the smooth wall of the lift, his posture infuriatingly relaxed, his expression unreadable. "I understand you’re protective of the company, Valeria. But don’t mistake your position for authority. You aren't in a place to lecture me."

Valeria’s eyes widened, a flush of hot indignation rising to her cheeks. "Excuse me? What did you just say?"

The elevator chimed, and the doors glided open to reveal the lobby. Before she could tear into him further, she froze. Standing in the center of the open space was a man draped in an impeccably tailored Versace suit, his wrist heavy with a diamond-encrusted Cartier watch, gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose.

Vance Carrington.

"Valeria," Vance called out, his voice smooth but edged with the sharp vibration of suspicion. "I heard a rumor floating through the grapevine. Word is, Marcella picked up some toy boy. Tell me it's not true."

Valeria quickly smoothed her skirt, her panic masked by a practiced, fragile smile. "Mr. Vance, surely you know better than to listen to office gossip. Ms. Highborne doesn't just... collect people."

Vance let out a breath, clearly relieved. "I knew it. Marcella has standards. She wouldn't settle for anything less than excellence."

Kaelen stepped out of the elevator, completely unbothered by the static electricity of tension radiating from Valeria. He looked directly at Vance, his voice steady, flat, and indifferent. "Actually, the gossip is true. I’m the toy boy Cella brought back."

The air in the lobby seemed to turn arctic. Vance went rigid, his gaze locking onto Kaelen with a visceral, possessive hatred.

Valeria hissed, "Kaelen, be quiet! You have no idea what you’re doing to this firm!"

Kaelen didn't even offer her a glance. "Why hide it? It’s not a secret. Half the office staff saw us walk in together."

Valeria looked as if she might collapse. Every drop of color drained from her face, leaving her ghost-white.

Vance stepped closer, his presence aggressive and looming. "I’ll give you exactly one chance to walk that back. Explain yourself."

"I'm here to protect Cella," Kaelen replied, his tone infuriatingly conversational. "For the rest of my life."

Valeria snapped. "Enough!" She lunged, her hand raised to strike him across the face, but Kaelen caught her wrist in mid-air. His grip was iron, immovable.

"You might be a friend of hers," Kaelen said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy temperature that seemed to vibrate in the room. "But don't ever test me again."

Valeria shuddered as he released her, stumbling back a step.

Vance sneered, stepping into their personal space, his face twisted in aristocratic disdain. "Do you have any idea who I am? Or are you too busy playing house to realize you're dealing with the Carrington family?"

"I have no idea who you are," Kaelen stated flatly.

"I'm the son of the Carrington family in Onyxhaven," Vance spat, emphasizing every syllable. "And the Marcella Group’s largest distributor. If I stop working with them—if I pull my support—this company folds by morning. Do you understand the gravity of your existence now?"

Valeria was trembling, her eyes darting between them, terrified. She knew the absolute power Vance held over the company’s future.

Kaelen simply laughed. It was a short, sharp sound, utterly devoid of humor. "Is that supposed to scare me? Even the most prominent families in the capital know better than to cross me, Vance. You? You're a footnote."

Valeria’s voice broke, her nerves fraying completely. "Get on your knees! Apologize to Mr. Vance right now!"

Kaelen didn't hesitate. His hand moved, a blur of motion, and the resounding crack of his palm connecting with her cheek echoed through the silent lobby like a gunshot.

"I told you," Kaelen said, his voice lethal. "Don't order me around."

Valeria stumbled, her hand flying to her face, eyes wide with shock and humiliation.

Vance was incensed, his face purpling with rage. "You arrogant, dead-man-walking..." He turned, storming toward the elevator to get to Marcella, but the doors slid open before he could reach them.

Marcella stepped out, her expression unreadable, her eyes sharp and focused. She had been alerted to the commotion minutes ago.

Vance stopped dead, pointing a trembling, accusatory finger at Kaelen. "Marcella, explain this! Tell me what this is. This... this child, this toy boy—is this really who you’re choosing over me?"

Marcella looked at him, her gaze cool and utterly detached. "That isn't any of your concern, Vance."

Vance blinked, reeling as if he’d been physically struck. His mask of gentlemanly charm shattered, revealing the entitled ego beneath. "Are you kidding me? The Carrington family made this company what it is. You’re threatening our entire alliance for this—this nobody?"

He leaned in, his voice a low, ugly threat. "You have a choice, Marcella. Him, or the distribution deal. Choose wisely."

Marcella didn't even blink. Her resolve was absolute, her voice like iron.

"Do as you wish."
