Her tears spilled over her lashes a second before her head dropped in a submissive, trembling nod. I was bound by honor and blood to shield her for Giovanni, but nothing in our law required me to show her a shred of mercy while doing it.

"Take her back and lock her in a secure room," I commanded, keeping my tone clipped and final. "I want eyes on her continuously. Unbroken watch."
