The Predator's Gaze

POV: Chiara

Three months earlier…

The blistering Miami heat baked the roof of my sedan, but the real suffocation came straight from my rearview mirror.

Two heavy, tinted SUVs crawled aggressively behind my rear bumper.

They were Massimo Bellini’s latest addition to my life, a highly visible security detail and a glaring reminder of the invisible leash choking my senior year. I was counting down the agonizing hours until graduation. With a pristine GPA, I could easily secure a high-profile job in the financial sector, permanently escaping this blood-soaked city.

My father had fought the idea tooth and nail, but he ultimately caved because I was his little girl. I had absolutely zero shame in weaponizing his twisted affection if it secured my freedom.

I whipped into a concrete parking space near the campus boundary. The massive detail parked at a calculated distance, watching as I grabbed my tote and marched toward the lecture hall.

"Cutting it a little close," a familiar voice called out.

I paused on the warm concrete steps, waiting for Sienna to catch up.

"I could say the exact same about you," I countered.

Sienna was my only genuine friend at the university. Since her father operated directly on Massimo's payroll, she completely understood the isolating reality of the Bellini name.

"I see the shadow detail is back in full force," she noted, casting a blatant look over her shoulder at the suited men lingering by the cars.

"Unfortunately," I muttered, pushing the heavy glass doors open to let her through. "I assumed we were past this paranoid phase, but my dad has to dictate every breathing second of my existence."

I turned back toward the glass, glaring at the armed guards, and sharply mouthed the words to go away.

"I overheard my dad talking to my mom late last night," Sienna said, lowering her voice as we navigated the crowded corridor. "Things are getting incredibly volatile on the streets. The head of the Slavic Bratva is actively making a massive territorial play."

I scoffed, shifting the strap of my heavy bag. "I fail to see how an underground turf dispute has anything to do with my class schedule."

Sienna let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Don't be so blindly naive, Chiara. You are technically mafia royalty."

"How about we just get to our seats," I suggested, shaking my head to physically dismiss her anxiety. "Stop spreading violent rumors before a lecture."

"They aren't rumors if the bullets are real."

"Come on," I pushed her playfully toward the auditorium doors.

Luckily, our painfully slow professor hadn't dragged himself to the podium yet.

An hour and a half later, my brain felt like absolute mush. The man possessed a special, draining talent for sucking the life out of a room.

As I blindly shoved my thick textbooks into my bag, my phone vibrated violently against the desk.

I pulled it out and tapped the screen. It was my older brother, Teo.

*Mandatory dinner tonight. Please tell me you're showing up. Dad is on a massive warpath and I can't handle him alone.*

A heavy knot formed in my chest. While Massimo treated me like a fragile porcelain doll, he actively used Teo as his personal punching bag. He claimed the sole heir to his empire needed brutal hardening. Who was I to question a dictator's motives?

*I'm only walking through those doors if you convince him to pull these suffocating bodyguards off my back,* I typed out rapidly.

Three gray bubbles pulsed on the screen for a tense moment.

*I'll attempt it, but you know my words mean nothing to him,* Teo replied.

*Bleed for it, or my seat stays completely empty,* I threatened, hitting send.

*Doing my best,* he conceded, attaching a frustrated emoji.

I locked my screen with a heavy sigh. Teo leaned into the dramatics, but carrying the crushing weight of the Bellini legacy was a guaranteed death sentence for anyone's sanity.

Sienna was already across the aisle, eagerly chatting up a bulky football player.

I caught her eye and gave a quick wave, mouthing a goodbye as I slipped out.

She flashed a knowing grin. In four years, I hadn't gone near a single athlete. Sienna enthusiastically burned through the sports roster for both of us. They were far too reckless, too loud, and entirely too immature. She constantly accused me of actively hating fun, deliberately forgetting the violent shadow attached to my family.

Besides, I already had Lucas. We met at a university-sponsored business seminar six months ago. He was perfectly ordinary, completely safe, and entirely clueless about the criminal underworld.

I exclusively used my mother’s maiden name on campus. Total anonymity was my only effective shield.

Navigating the paved pathways toward the library, I caught a glimpse of the dark suits trailing thirty yards behind me. I stopped dead in my tracks and spun around.

"Can you guys seriously leave?" I demanded as the two massive guards approached. "This is a college campus. You stick out horribly, and I don't require a military escort to read a book."

"I’m sorry, Ms. Bellini," the taller one stated, completely devoid of emotion. "It’s our strict job to keep you safe."

"Keep me safe from what exactly?" I challenged, crossing my arms. "A lethal paper cut in the fiction aisle?"

"I don’t know what you want us to say. We follow our direct orders."

I rolled my eyes so hard my skull ached, pivoting sharply to resume my walk.

Two nights ago, Massimo started ranting about phantom threats, completely paranoid about someone tracking my movements. I had lived in my own apartment for two years without a single scratch. Why would the sky suddenly fall now?

Pushing through the library's heavy acoustic doors, a wave of smug satisfaction hit me. The guards were forced to remain in the lobby, legally barred from entering the student-only study halls.

I navigated the quiet rows until I spotted Lucas at our usual corner cubicle.

"Hi babe," Lucas greeted warmly, standing up as I approached.

"Hi," I murmured, leaning in to accept his sweet, predictable kiss.

He easily slipped the heavy tote bag off my shoulder. "How was your afternoon class?"

"Class was class," I replied, sinking into the hard wooden chair. "How was yours?"

"Fine."

"Just fine?" I teased, pulling out my laptop.

He stacked his own books to the side. "Honestly, my psychology seminar is completely kicking my ass right now."

"I get it."

We fell into a comfortable, quiet routine, organizing our notes in silence. I actually studied, while he mostly just stared at me with an adorable, oblivious affection.

"I was actually thinking you should come out to my parent's beach house this weekend," Lucas casually dropped into the quiet space.

My fingers froze on the keyboard. I was absolutely not ready for three full days isolated with him. I barely survived our overnight dates without feeling incredibly restless.

"I’ll have to check my schedule," I deflected, staring intensely at my screen. "Teo already mapped out some strict family plans for us. I'll let you know."

"It’s just a weekend getaway, Chiara. I’m not asking you to sign a marriage license."

He tried to sound breezy, but a layer of genuine frustration bled into his tone.

"I didn't say you were," I shot back, instantly defensive. I despised being questioned or cornered. My mother always warned that it was the Bellini temper flaring up.

"I really don’t want to argue about this," Lucas said softly, shifting his chair closer and pulling me by the waist.

"Neither do I." I exhaled slowly, releasing the defensive tension in my shoulders. "Tell you what. Let's compromise. We can do one single overnight at the beach house."

He leaned over, pressing a soft kiss to my temple. "Thanks, babe. I know you desperately need the getaway yourself."

He was absolutely right about that.

"Come on already. How long does it actually take to put on a dress?" Teo complained, leaning heavily against my bedroom doorframe. "He is going to be absolutely livid if we show up late."

"I had afternoon classes and actual responsibilities," I snapped back, adjusting the thin straps of my outfit. "It’s not my fault you are too terrified to face dinner alone."

"I know, I’m sorry," he muttered, running an exhausted hand through his dark hair. "He has been relentlessly brutal on me lately. He’s marginally calmer when you sit at the table. I just want him to acknowledge me as an adult, not treat me like incompetent trash."

"That particular ship sailed a decade ago," I teased dryly.

"You really aren’t funny, Chiara. How much longer? It’s a casual dinner, not a gala."

"Now who isn’t being funny."

I turned to the full-length mirror for a final assessment. The navy blue dress was simple, belted at the waist, but it clung aggressively tight to every curve of my hips. My hair was twisted up in a messy chignon. I kept my face mostly bare. Massimo despised heavy makeup on me, always calling it loud and cheap. If he possessed the physical means, he would have locked me in a fortified tower years ago.

I snatched my clutch off the dresser. "Ready?"

I brushed past his shoulder, and Teo let out a relieved breath.

Walking out of my apartment complex, my blood instantly boiled. Two massive, armored SUVs sat idling directly at the curb.

Teo shot me an agonizingly apologetic grimace.

I shook my head in utter defeat. A bulky guard yanked the heavy reinforced door open, and I slid into the leather seat, violently counting down the days until graduation. There was absolutely no reason for me to stay in this city.

Teo climbed in from the opposite side, silently mouthing another apology as the heavy door slammed shut, sealing us in the quiet cabin.

I couldn't truly stay mad at him. Massimo Bellini wasn't a man who negotiated. He had ruthlessly dominated the Miami syndicate for twenty bloody years following our grandfather's violent death. He demanded terrifying perfection. The Bellinis dealt in weapons, narcotics, and heavy extortion—the exact filth I was desperate to escape.

"I know you completely despise these mandatory dinners, but I am incredibly grateful you showed up," Teo said quietly as the convoy began to move.

"It’s going to cost you heavily," I warned, turning my head to face him.

"Am I going to hate this?"

I leaned across the center console so the driver couldn't eavesdrop. "Lucas invited me to his parent's secluded beach house for the weekend."

Teo grimaced. "Um."

"I successfully negotiated it down to a single overnight," I pressed. "I used you as the excuse, saying you already made plans for us."

"What exactly are you expecting me to do?"

"Figure out a solid alibi, because I need you to cover my tracks completely."

"Why don’t you just drop the charade and tell him who we actually are?" Teo argued, looking out the tinted window. "He has to have connected the dots by now."

"If he knows, he’s playing dumb. You know exactly how civilians react when they hear our last name."

"Wait, doesn’t he even know your real surname?"

"No. I strictly use Mom’s maiden name in public."

"That is incredibly messed up, Chiara."

"I didn’t ask to be born into this violent syndicate," I fired back as the SUVs pulled smoothly into the valet lane of Massimo’s absolute favorite upscale restaurant.

"Really?" Teo challenged.

"I didn’t pick this life," I repeated stubbornly.

The guard threw my door open. I stepped out into the humid evening air and marched straight through the ornate glass entrance.

Massimo was already holding court at the central, most visible table, laughing loudly while pouring an expensive red wine for his guests.

"My beautiful little girl has finally come to grace us," he boomed, spreading his arms wide as I approached.

"Hi, Dad. I hope you don’t mind me crashing your evening."

"Not at all. I’m quite certain this is your brother’s cowardly doing," Massimo stated flatly. "Sit right here next to me. Gemma, move your chair."

Gemma visibly flinched. She was wife number four, barely five years older than me, and entirely acquired as a decorative trophy.

"It’s fine, Dad. I’m sure she prefers sitting next to you," I tried to intervene, feeling a sharp pang of pity.

"I don’t mind," Gemma whispered quickly, her eyes wide with deep-seated terror.

"Come sit by me," Massimo commanded, leaving absolutely no room for debate.

For the next agonizing hour, Massimo dominated the airspace, boasting about his latest ventures. He threw a few condescending questions about my classes, solely because it was a sore subject and he desperately wanted me to drop out. He treated Teo like a ghost, deliberately ignoring his existence. The tension was thick, exhausting, and incredibly toxic.

Everyone at our table was so entirely focused on Massimo's loud monologue that they completely missed the massive disruption stepping into the dining room.

A towering man was striding directly toward our heavily guarded table.

The sheer, lethal power radiating from his massive frame sucked the oxygen right out of the room. The second he stepped into the ambient lighting, his heavy, dark gaze locked directly onto me.

He pinned me completely in place. His stare was so intensely consuming, so violently predatory, that a shocking rush of tingling heat exploded everywhere inside my body. My breath completely vanished. A deep, shameful ache immediately bloomed wet and heavy between my thighs.

Without a single conscious thought, I clamped my bare legs tightly together under the expensive linen tablecloth.

He was ruthlessly undressing me with those eyes. He stood at least six-foot-three, his broad shoulders and narrow waist testing the limits of an impeccably tailored dark suit. He possessed a terrifyingly perfect build.

My mind completely short-circuited. I vividly, filthily pictured this dominant stranger violently yanking me out of this chair, dragging me onto the center of the dining table, and ruthlessly having his absolute way with my body while everyone watched. The raw fantasy made me drip.

If I possessed an ounce of actual bravery, I would walk right up to him and demand one filthy night.

I was genuinely shocked when his heavy boots finally halted right at the edge of our table.

"Good evening, Massimo. Interesting place to hold a family gathering," the stranger stated.

His voice was chillingly cold, deep, and laced with a thick, heavy accent. He had completely severed his eye contact with me, and a sick, twisted wave of actual disappointment washed over my chest. What the hell was wrong with me? I had a perfectly safe boyfriend, yet my body was screaming for this lethal intruder.

"Hard to believe, considering I own half this room and have never once seen your face," Massimo shot back.

From my peripheral vision, two of our armed bodyguards subtly shifted their weight, stepping closer to the chairs.

"I walked in here to offer a truce. There is enough concrete in this city for both of us to breathe," the stranger continued, completely unfazed by the bristling security.

I shot a frantic glance at Teo, silently begging for an explanation, but my brother just gave a rigid, imperceptible shake of his head.

"I have absolutely zero interest in handing over what you haven't bled for!" Massimo roared, his booming voice instantly silencing the entire lively restaurant.

The ambient chatter died in a horrifying second.

The stranger didn't even flinch at the furious outburst. Instead, he slowly, deliberately turned his heavy, unyielding gaze right back to me.

"I strongly advise against starting a fire you cannot put out," the massive man warned smoothly, his dark eyes violently holding mine hostage. "There are plenty of starving wolves wandering outside, and you are sitting at a table made entirely of vulnerable prey."

His lips moved, but the terrifying threat entirely failed to register in my brain. The deep, vibrating, dominant timber of his voice alone was making me impossibly, throbbingly wet.

Suddenly, the hypnotic spell violently shattered.

Massimo aggressively kicked his chair back, standing up in a blind fury.

A heavy-handed bodyguard instantly clamped his massive fingers around my upper arm with bruising force, physically hauling me out of my seat.

"What the hell?" I gasped, stumbling in my heels.

"Take her," Massimo barked the ruthless order, treating me like cargo to be shoved in a vault.

I was forcefully dragged backward toward the exit, but I physically could not stop myself from turning my head over my shoulder.

The towering stranger stood perfectly still amidst the explosive chaos. He watched my retreating body with the dark, obsessive, unblinking eyes of a lethal predator who had just definitively locked onto his ultimate prey.
