The Humiliation of the Jilted Bride
Morning sunlight dragged Maren Camilla Di Ravelli into the suffocating reality of her brand-new life.
She was officially shackled to a mafia kingpin, a man elite society considered an untouchable bachelor. To her, he was just the devil. Her impulsive proposal to him felt like a lifetime ago, a strategic gamble rapidly decaying into a waking nightmare.
"Good morning, Mrs. Di Ravelli," a maid with a thick Spanish accent greeted her, already moving to dress her like an expensive, lifeless doll.
Another attendant hovered nearby, aggressively swiping through a sleek tablet to dictate the new bride's itinerary. Maren stared blankly into the vanity mirror as a brush forcefully flattened her blonde strands into a rigid style. Her green irises were dull, heavily sunken from a complete lack of sleep.
She hadn't expected to spend her wedding night entirely alone in a cavernous bedroom. The bastard hadn't just humiliated her by walking out of their reception to go fuck his mistress. He had carelessly let the scandalous photos circulate online while his bride stood abandoned among the elite.
"You will have breakfast with Mrs. Renata, and after that, you have a photoshoot and a charity gala tonight," the second maid announced.
"I see," Maren muttered, glancing down at the restrictive dress they had picked out for her.
Minutes later, Maren descended the sweeping marble staircase of the sprawling Di Ravelli estate. As soon as she stepped into the blindingly opulent dining room anchored by diamond chandeliers, she met the cold eyes of her new mother-in-law.
"Did you intentionally drag your face across a brick wall? You look absolutely dreadful." Renata’s greeting sliced through the quiet room. The older woman already looked flawless, meticulously tailored in a sharp morning suit.
"Thanks for noticing," Maren replied dryly. "Is Enrico going to join us?"
She tried to ignore the isolating reality that they were entirely alone at a table built for dozens.
Renata lifted a manicured nail decorated in fierce leopard print, her glossy red lips curving into a cruel smile. "Oh, he doesn't live here."
What?
The casual delivery hit Maren like a physical blow. Her husband of exactly one day didn't even reside on the same property? Maren forced her erratic breathing to level out, waiting until a silent housekeeper placed a heavy silver dome in front of her.
"I see. And when exactly will I be moving in with him?"
It was a fake marriage on paper, but surely maintaining the illusion meant existing under the same roof.
Renata delicately adjusted the linen napkin at her collar, a mocking amusement in her eyes. "Lift the lid, Maren."
Suspicion pricked at the base of Maren's skull. She removed the golden cover, expecting her morning meal. Instead, a pristine, thickly bound legal document sat in the center: *Marriage Contract*.
What the hell...
Her eyes darted sharply upward. The overwhelming urge to rip the stupid paper to shreds burned through her veins.
"What. Is. This?" she demanded.
Her eyes frantically swept the index, catching degrading clauses titled *Bridal Expectations* and *Living Arrangements*. Boiling with rage, she aggressively flipped the page.
*For the duration of this contract, Party A will live completely separate from Party B, and Party A will project the image of a perfect wife in public...*
The insulting bullshit went on for pages. The more Maren alternated between glaring at Renata and the restrictive terms, the more her patience snapped in half.
Unfazed by the explosive tone, Renata took a leisurely sip of her wine. "You didn't actually convince yourself this was a real marriage, did you, Maren? Come on, even if you are a natural blonde, you should have more sense than that."
Fuck that.
Pure fury spiked in Maren’s chest. She opened her mouth to unleash a snarky retort, but Renata instantly leaned forward, her voice dropping to cold, lethal steel.
"Think very carefully before you let whatever is on your mind out of your mouth, Maren. It is absolutely not too late to return you to the streets, exactly where you belong."
The unspoken threat of violence washed over Maren, forcefully choking the fight right out of her throat. Was this her entire existence now? A caged trophy wife for a mobster family that refused to acknowledge her?
"Your actual breakfast will be served momentarily," Renata commanded smoothly. "Sign those papers, and prepare for the photoshoot. I have a guest arriving soon."
***
If the new bride mistakenly believed she had survived the worst of her waking nightmare, she was brutally proven wrong shortly after finishing the suffocating photoshoot.
Her mother-in-law's highly anticipated guest turned out to be none other than Mariana—the exact exotic woman Enrico had rushed out of his wedding ceremony to go see.
Seeing the mistress's leaked photos online was agonizing, but having her physically flaunt her presence inside this home was a totally different level of humiliation. Renata let out a high-pitched shriek of pure delight, rushing forward to peck the younger woman on both cheeks.
"Oh my, you look absolutely breathtaking! How was the London shoot?"
Mariana slowly turned her head, dragging a look of pure disgust up and down Maren’s rigid posture. "It was flawless, but I had to cut it short when I heard the news. I honestly cannot fathom why Rico would suddenly marry... someone like her."
The mistress took a slow step forward, feigning a sickly-sweet tone. "Oh, my apologies. I got a gift for you, but I couldn't deliver it last night because Rico kept me incredibly busy throughout the entire night..."
Unable to endure the physical stabbing pain in her chest for another second, Maren spun on her heels and blindly marched out the heavy front doors.
No one attempted to call her back. She kept walking, viciously cursing her own existence and the father who had sold her off like a cheap shipment of goods. She was permanently bound to a mafia family that didn't give a single shit about her.
As though the universe hadn't punished her enough, Maren's gaze caught a massive, brightly lit digital billboard hovering just outside the sprawling estate.
The glowing screen prominently featured her younger half-sister, Whitney. The bold text officially hailed the girl as the brilliant new corporate heiress, celebrating her recent marriage to Darren as a perfect 'love match.'
Maren stopped dead in her tracks. Aches slammed brutally into her chest as she stared at the massive pictures of her father beaming triumphantly alongside the new couple.
There was zero mention of her name. It was as though she had simply ceased to exist, entirely erased from the empire she had been rigorously conditioned to take over for twenty-five years.
Consumed by agonizing grief and white-hot anger, hot tears spilled uncontrollably down her pale cheeks. The sheer weight of total isolation finally crushed her, and her trembling legs gave out completely.
She braced for the violent impact of the floor, but she never hit the ground.
Instead, she fell forward into a pair of massive, heavily muscled arms that caught her with shocking speed.
Adrenaline instantly flooded her veins. Her tear-filled eyes darted frantically upward, her heartbeat skyrocketing the second she locked onto familiar silver eyes.
Di fucking Ravelli.
