Blurring the Lines

KAT

The elevator doors chimed and slid open before he could formulate a response to my defiance. A cluster of executives stood waiting in the plush carpeted lobby ahead of us. We plastered on professional smiles, burying the bitter hostility of the elevator ride under corporate masks. Handshakes were exchanged. The three of us merged into the waiting group and proceeded down the wide, brightly lit corridor toward the main executive boardroom.

Taking my designated seat for the pitch proved to be a psychological test of endurance. I found it impossible to focus on the marketing presentation. Ronan claimed the heavy leather chair right beside my right arm. Every single time I shifted my body to point out a metric on the glowing projector screen, I swore I felt his intense gaze burning directly into my ass. The heat of his stare felt like a physical weight against my tailored skirt. It might have been my own paranoia acting up, fueled by the incident earlier, but my skin prickled with hyper-awareness. Relief washed over me when he finally stood to take over the primary speaking role. I sank back into my chair, crossed my legs, and focused on breathing evenly while he commanded the room.

The meeting dragged on for an agonizing hour. Right as we wrapped up the final slides, Ronan's phone vibrated on the mahogany table. He checked the caller ID, answered in a clipped tone, and waved a dismissive hand at Nolan and me. He ordered us to head back to the office floor without him.

Nolan did not attempt to hide his satisfaction at the arrangement. We navigated our way back to the Mercer Media building in an easy rhythm. The contrast between the two brothers gave me mental whiplash. Spending more time confined in a small space with Ronan after our earlier altercation would have been a nightmare. The air around him always crackled with suffocating authority. With Nolan, the heavy discomfort vanished. He knew exactly how to make me laugh. The easy banter flowed out of me without a second thought. Yet, I could not ignore the fact that he was undeniably sexy. The man carried himself with a charming swagger, and the simmering tension between us remained palpable. He made his interest known with lingering glances and playful remarks.

I spent the walk back seriously debating my ongoing refusal to accept his advances. Why was I still pushing him away? He was not my direct supervisor. Had I been turning down a gorgeous man just because they shared the same last name? I needed to stop letting Ronan dictate my personal life. He signed my paychecks, but he did not own my free time. We reached our designated floors. I left Nolan at the public relations department and rode the elevator up to my floor alone.

The internal debate raged on as I walked to my desk. The pros of dating Nolan stacked up quickly. He possessed intelligence, undeniable charm, and a body molded for sin. I had zero doubts he knew exactly how to satisfy a woman in bed. The cons presented a much steeper cliff. Office politics lurked in the shadows. Getting involved with a Mercer carried significant risk to my budding career. Then there was the looming shadow of Ronan’s inevitable disapproval. The man would throw a fit. The corporate mess felt like a minefield waiting to detonate under my heels.

I sank into the ergonomic mesh chair behind my desk, letting out a long breath. A sudden urge to bypass this complicated corporate drama hit my system. I stared at my dark phone screen, seriously debating a different escape route. Calling Henrik felt like the perfect solution. We had not seen each other in a few weeks, but the temptation hovered in the back of my mind.

Henrik was my ex. He represented a straightforward, uncomplicated distraction from stuffy, arrogant executives. He worked as a firefighter, carrying a thick, intoxicating German accent. Our physical chemistry always bordered on explosive. The man possessed a rare, dedicated talent for making me come hard. It was a feat most men I encountered failed to achieve, yet Henrik made it look effortless. I knew he would jump at the chance to meet up if I sent him a single text. The problem lay in his recent behavior. The last few times we hooked up, he started dropping heavy hints about wanting to transition into a real relationship. I liked keeping things casual.

A pang of unexpected longing hit my chest anyway. Missing him felt incredibly dangerous. He treated me with genuine affection, knowing exactly when to pull me close and when to give me space. He stood in stark contrast to the ruthless men roaming these glass-paneled hallways. He felt like a walking fantasy pulled straight from a late-night craving. Ink covered almost every visible inch of his skin. Thick, dark tattoos started just above his hip bones, crawling up his chiseled abdomen and broad chest. The intricate designs wrapped around his thick arms, spanned his muscular back, and crept up the nape of his neck. He recently shaved his head, putting the fresh ink above his ears on full display. Watching his muscles shift under the artwork was hypnotic. Add the uniform, the soot-stained turnout gear, and the accent, and my past orgasms made perfect sense. I used to fantasize about setting my kitchen on fire just to watch him break down my door with an axe and carry me out.

Calling him would save me from the impending headache of dealing with the Mercer brothers. I shook my head to clear the distracting thoughts. It was too late to run away from the mess. I needed to focus on my actual job. The team alignment meeting was scheduled for five o'clock. Ronan would return soon.

I spent the next half hour organizing the large conference room. Fresh notepads and pens were placed at every seat. I finished my tasks and headed to the restroom down the hall to wash my hands. I stepped out of the bathroom a few minutes later and walked back toward the glass-enclosed room. A deep, cruel voice echoed down the quiet hallway. I froze in my tracks. Ronan's office door remained shut, meaning the voices were carrying directly from the conference room. I recognized Nolan's lighter tone, followed by the harsh, abrasive sound of his older brother. I crept closer, my heart thumping against my ribs. I paused just outside the partially open door.

"Give it up. You are being pathetic. She will never agree to go out with you. I am sure of that."

The arrogant certainty in Ronan's voice struck me like a physical blow. He spoke to his brother with pure dismissal. He sounded so incredibly sure of himself, as if he had mapped out my brain and calculated my every move. He predicted my hesitation flawlessly. I had spent the last hour debating the career risks of dating Nolan. Ronan knew it. He banked on it.

A hot, spiteful urge flared in my gut. He thought he could control my actions through sheer intimidation. He thought he knew exactly what I would do. I refused to be another predictable variable in his calculated world. I pushed the heavy door open and strode into the room.

The two men stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. I kept my face blank. I ignored their presence entirely, walking straight to the large mahogany table. I dropped my leather portfolio onto the polished wood and pulled my cell phone from my pocket. My fingers flew across the screen. I opened my messages with Nolan.

*Kat: 'You said a message would suffice. So... are you free on Saturday?'*

I hit send before I could overthink it. My chest heaved with a mixture of adrenaline and foolishness. I let Ronan's arrogance dictate my actions. I let his cruel words push me over the edge. But as I stared at the delivered notification, I accepted the truth. I held a genuine interest in Nolan. Spending a Saturday evening with him would not be a hardship.

The rest of the team filed into the room shortly after. The tension hung thick in the air, but I forced myself to focus on the weekly alignment goals. I jotted down notes, avoiding eye contact with the head of the table. The hour passed in a blur of marketing strategies and budget approvals. Five o'clock hit. The team packed up their briefcases and laptops, eager to start the evening. The room emptied out, leaving only the Mercer brothers and me. I checked the time on my screen. I gathered my scattered papers, ready to escape to the sanctuary of my apartment.

A prickle of awareness made me look up. Nolan stood across the table, his eyes locked onto mine. A triumphant smile played on his lips.

"Why wait until Saturday?"

I blinked, caught off guard. I did not expect him to bring up the date with his older brother standing five feet away.

"Excuse me?"

"We do not have to wait until Saturday. Aren't you free today?"

The realization hit me. He checked his phone during the meeting. He knew. I swallowed hard, feeling the dark, looming presence of his brother in my peripheral vision.

I kept my voice steady, aiming for casual banter. "I think you can wait just a little longer."

Nolan chuckled, a rich sound that echoed in the quiet space. He relished his victory. "Yeah, I think I can manage. I can spend the next few days enjoying this win. See you tomorrow, brother."

He sent a deliberate wink in my direction and strolled out of the room. The heavy wooden door clicked shut behind him.

The sound acted like a lock turning on a cage. Absolute silence swallowed the room. The air grew thick and suffocating. I stood alone with Ronan. I turned my head to face him. His dark blue eyes locked onto mine. His expression gave nothing away. He looked like a predator calculating his next strike. The silence stretched between us, humming with dark, unspoken tension. I clutched my portfolio to my chest, refusing to break eye contact first.

I broke the unbearable quiet, keeping my tone strictly professional. "Before I leave, is there anything else you need, Mr. Mercer?"

He remained still. He observed me for a long, agonizing moment.

"From what I understand, you intend to go out with my brother?"

His voice came out low and rough. He demanded an answer. He did not ask; he extracted information. I tightened my grip on the leather folder. I held his intimidating, deep stare without flinching. His dark blue eyes tried to dominate my will, but the lingering spite from earlier fueled my spine.

"Yes, you understand perfectly."

His jaw clenched. A muscle ticked beneath his skin. The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees. His tone hardened into a sharp blade. "Is this some kind of joke?"

I held my ground. "No, why would it be?"

He stepped closer, radiating pure disapproval. "You must be aware of how inappropriate this is and that it can have consequences."

I raised my chin. "Is this a threat?"

"Maybe it was a mistake of mine to think you took your job seriously."

The insult landed with a sharp sting, heating my blood. "Do not do that. Do not try to use that as an excuse to question my competence."

His eyes turned pitch black with fury. "He is your superior, and we have some policies about this kind of relationship. I will not let my brother harm the company's image just because he decided to have an affair with an employee."

Rage boiled inside my chest at the insulting insinuation. The word 'affair' dripped with condescension. He insinuated I was nothing more than a cheap fling meant to tarnish his pristine corporate empire. He stripped away my dignity with a single sentence. I dropped the professional facade. I refused to let him belittle me.

"Technically, he is not my boss. And you know what? Screw you!"

I spun around on my heels and marched toward the exit. My shoes clicked sharply against the hardwood floor. Every step fueled my anger.

"Voss."

I ignored his warning rumble and reached for the heavy silver door handle.

"I didn't say you could leave."

The command lashed out like a whip. My hand froze an inch from the metal. Fury warred with the stark reality of his authority. My chest heaved. He was still my boss. He held my paycheck, my reference, and my livelihood in his hands. I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, battling the urge to rip the door open and sprint to the elevators.

The scrape of a heavy chair dragging against the floor broke my internal battle. I turned my head just enough to see him stand up. He moved with a deliberate, terrifying calm. He grabbed a stack of manila folders from the center of the table and piled them together. He did not look at me.

"Leave that on my desk."

He issued the cold order and turned his broad back to me, facing the floor-to-ceiling window. He stared out at the fading city light, dismissing me like a servant.

I swallowed my pride. It tasted like ash. I knew the smart play was to shut my mouth, do the menial task, and keep my job. Arguing with him yielded zero results. He enjoyed the power trip. I forced my feet to move. I walked back toward the large table in tense silence. The only sound in the room was the rustle of my clothes and the thud of my heels. I reached out to collect the thick stack of papers he left behind.

I bent slightly, sliding my fingers under the bottom folder.

My breath caught in my throat.

Without any warning, his huge body pressed flush against my back.

My entire body froze. My heart slammed against my ribs in a frantic, wild rhythm. I could not inhale. The sudden, overwhelming heat of his chest radiated through the thin fabric of my blouse. The solid wall of his torso trapped me against the edge of the table. Large, firm hands clamped down heavily on both sides of my hips, squeezing tightly and pulling me flush against his hard frame.
