Nowhere to Hide

Freya's POV

The heavy thrum of the bass shook the grand ballroom's floorboards, carrying a suffocating tide of expensive perfumes and anxious pheromones. Beside me, my best friend practically vibrated out of his tailored jacket.

"Now that is a genuine feast," Gael breathed, gesturing toward the arched entryway as a new pack Alpha commanded the threshold. "An absolute upgrade from the last one."

Two striking she-wolves flanked the man like matched bookends, with his top-ranking officers trailing right on their heels.

"You aren't wrong, Gael," I murmured, bringing my champagne flute to my mouth and taking a long, measured swallow. "He definitely puts on a show."

I had spent nearly my entire life attached to Gael’s hip. Since we were four years old, we had been an absolute unit. Physically, we couldn't be more different; he loomed over my five-foot-two frame at a sprawling six-foot-three. He carried the kind of punishing muscle mass that demanded attention, all thick biceps and a carved core beneath his silk shirt, topped off with a mess of bright blond hair that permanently looked entirely untamed. Add in those vivid, oceanic blue eyes, and he was an absolute hazard to the general public.

Gael essentially stopped traffic everywhere we went, but he carried one specific preference that kept the female population out of luck: he strictly preferred men.

A heavy exhale left my chest as I rolled my eyes for what felt like the fiftieth time tonight.

The Zenith Moon Pack was pulling out all the stops to host this year’s Mating Festival, and the grandeur was bordering on excessive.

I frankly had zero desire to be trapped in this building, but Gael had practically dragged me here. Tonight was supposed to be the night he finally crossed paths with his fated mate.

My vision swept across the sprawling sea of shifting bodies. A few lucky pairs had already found each other, their shared euphoria radiating through the crowded space in warm, blinding waves. Others hovered around the edges, gripped by a palpable, nervous anticipation. I, on the other hand, stayed anchored firmly in the darkest corner of the hall, aggressively praying to the Moon Goddess to keep me invisible.

"Holy hell, look at the door!" Gael shouted, raising his voice to cut through a sudden spike in the music. "He puts every single guy in this room to absolute shame!"

Against my better judgment, my head turned toward the main entrance, and the ground entirely vanished beneath my feet.

Kaelen Blackwood.

The continent revered him as an unmatched prize, a terrifyingly powerful Alpha. I knew him purely as the most infuriating, callous bastard to ever draw breath.

"What the fuck is he doing here?" Lyra, my inner wolf, snapped to the forefront of my mind, her hackles instantly raised. "He has a mate. He shouldn't even be allowed on the guest list."

Across the expanse of the room, Kaelen's gaze locked dead onto mine. The corner of his mouth ticked upward into a brief, deliberate smile, sending a violent jolt straight against my ribs.

"Dammit, he spotted me," I hissed under my breath, instantly breaking eye contact and spinning around to face the wall.

Maybe he wouldn't actually recognize me from this distance.

"He is walking straight this way," Gael hummed in absolute delight. I could practically hear him sizing up the approaching six-foot-five Alpha, taking in the ash-blond hair, the striking green eyes, and the golden, sun-baked skin.

"Oh, Goddess, absolutely not," I muttered, my pulse hammering a frantic rhythm. I genuinely lacked the physical endurance to suffer a conversation with him tonight.

Gael pulled his attention away from the approaching Alpha, his brow furrowing in deep confusion at my sheer panic.

"What is your problem?" he asked, completely baffled.

"I do not have the time to explain," I whispered harshly. "Just block me from his line of sight!"

"Why would I do that?" Gael countered, sounding thoroughly offended by the request. "The man is clearly aiming right for you."

"That is the precise issue here!" I let out a miserable groan.

"Well, you are out of luck," Gael stated simply.

I risked a glance upward to catch him wearing an incredibly punchable, amused grin.

Was he actually enjoying my misery?

"Good evening, Freya," a deep, resonant voice vibrated through the space directly behind me.

My shoulders instantly dropped in utter defeat. I shot Gael one last withering glare before pivoting on my heels to face the music.

"Alpha Kaelen," I forced the words out, fighting to keep my facial muscles entirely neutral. "I certainly wasn't expecting you."

"I imagine not," he replied smoothly, lifting his hand and offering it in my direction. "I came here specifically looking for you."

I stared down at his extended palm as if it were laced with strychnine, completely unwilling to close the distance.

Gael finally threw me a lifeline by reaching across the invisible divide and grasping Kaelen's hand with a firm, solid shake.

"A pleasure to meet you, Alpha," Gael offered, his gaze bouncing critically between the two of us. "I am Gael Thorne. Beta rank."

"The pleasure is mine," Kaelen answered, though he never once bothered to shift his gaze away from my face.

The heavy, suffocating silence stretched between us, thick enough to choke on.

Gael lingered for a few more seconds, observing the silent warfare before a slow, knowing smile claimed his features.

There was zero chance he missed the sheer hostility pouring off me.

"Do you actually know this guy?" Gael's voice echoed through our private mind-link.

"Yes," I spat back mentally.

Gael's eyes widened a fraction in genuine surprise.

"I really want to know what business he has here," Lyra paced in the back of my mind, her claws scraping against my consciousness.

"I couldn't care less about his agenda," I snarled back at her. "He has no right to crash an event meant for single wolves!"

Just then, a sudden commotion near the main entrance caught Gael's attention. His posture shifted, something invisible capturing his wolf's immediate focus.

"I need to step away for just a minute," Gael announced abruptly.

Before I could even form a syllable of protest, he abandoned his post and started weaving his way through the dense crowd toward the doors.

"You have got to be kidding me," I muttered into my glass, utterly betrayed.

"About time," Kaelen remarked, settling his focus entirely on me. "I was starting to think your oversized shadow would never take a hint."

I squared my shoulders, fixing him with a stare sharp enough to draw blood.

"Why exactly do you look so miserable to see me?" Kaelen asked, bringing a hand up to rub the back of his neck, seemingly thrown off by the absolute frost in my demeanor.

"Gee, I wonder why," I shot back, dropping the volume of my voice into a low, rumbling warning. "You publicly discarded me. Try to keep up."

"That is in the past," Kaelen stated smoothly, dismissing the destruction of my life with a casual wave of his hand.

A fierce, unadulterated anger flared to life inside my chest.

"Your ego is actually astounding," I snapped, pivoting to walk away from the infuriating conversation. "Go peddle this garbage to whoever that girl was."

"I can't do that," he stated, his tone incredibly even.

My boots glued themselves to the floor. I slowly turned my body back around to face him.

"Why the hell not?" I demanded. "You two seemed completely inseparable."

"Because it ended," Kaelen answered, a terrifying calm anchoring his posture.

Was he actually playing games with me right now?

Was this some twisted form of entertainment?

A sharp, stinging sensation gripped my chest, instantly stealing the oxygen from my lungs as my memories viciously dragged me backward.

It had been exactly one year ago, at this very same festival.

I was barely a week past my eighteenth birthday.

Gael hadn't accompanied me because his wolf had yet to awaken. He masked it well, hiding any visible disappointment about being left behind, though a nervous tension had radiated off his frame all evening.

Instead of complaining, he had encouraged me to go, showcasing a level of selflessness that I always admired.

That night, I had possessed the exact same bright, foolish hope that Gael was carrying tonight: the absolute certainty of finding my fated mate.

The vivid details of that evening forcefully superimposed themselves over the ballroom in front of me.

"Have the best time, Freya-bear," Gael had said, gently tucking a stray black curl behind my ear and lifting my chin with his knuckles. "You know I'm sitting this one out, but I'd give anything to be walking through those doors with you."

I had beamed at my oldest friend, throwing my arms around his solid waist and squeezing tight. His hugs had always been an instant cure for my spiraling anxiety, anchoring me when my nerves threatened to take over.

"I am going to give you a full report the second I get home," I promised, practically buzzing with unfiltered excitement. "I might even bring a new mate back to meet you!"

Gael had thrown his head back, letting out a booming, infectious laugh. It was the kind of rich, echoing sound that always forced heads to turn in our direction. People invariably smiled when they heard it, and I considered myself incredibly lucky to be on the receiving end of it every single day.

"I'm holding you to that!" He pressed a quick, affectionate kiss to my forehead before opening the passenger door of the car for me.

My parents—the Alpha and Luna of the Ironbound Pack—had lived out an absolute cinematic romance, and I had spent my entire childhood praying my story would rival theirs.

The drive to the hosting rival pack's territory had passed in a blur. Before I could fully process the reality of the moment, I was standing between my parents, staring down the massive, reinforced wooden doors of the venue.

Inside my head, Lyra had started pacing with a frantic, uncontainable energy I had never experienced before.

The moment the perimeter guards hauled the heavy doors open, a breathtaking scent crashed into my senses—a crisp, intoxicating rush of wild grasslands.

"Holy shit," I whispered to myself, completely overwhelmed. "That is incredible. Who does that belong to?"

I followed my parents to our designated table, forcing myself to sit through the opening ceremonies, but my skin was practically buzzing. I kept shifting in my chair, desperate to track down the source of that heavy, grounding aroma.

Every second felt like an hour. I just wanted the formal speeches to end.

The instant the final Alpha finished his toast, I pushed away from the table, muttered a hasty excuse, and let my senses take the wheel.

He wasn't hard to locate; the scent trail was a physical tether dragging me across the floor. Up close, the smell was even more potent, sinking straight into my bones.

"Mate!" Lyra barked in my mind, doing joyful laps around my consciousness.

I could barely believe the man sitting at the bar was actually meant for me.

He looked like he had stepped out of a mythological textbook—a devastatingly handsome Alpha leaning casually against the counter, exchanging easy conversation with a she-wolf seated beside him.

I lingered a few steps back, taking in the sheer width of his shoulders, the commanding way he occupied space, and the deep, rumbling resonance of his laugh.

Lyra let out a rumbling purr of pure satisfaction.

"He has to be an Alpha," she insisted, pressing against my mind. "Stop stalling. Let's go meet him!"

A massive knot lodged itself in the back of my throat. A swarm of nervous energy flipped my stomach upside down as I forced myself to take a tentative step forward. I swallowed past the dryness in my mouth, trying to steady my breathing.

And then I stopped completely.

Without warning, the man leaned forward and captured the stunning brunette’s lips in a deep, familiar kiss.

My brain short-circuited. A low, territorial growl ripped its way out of my throat before I could physically stop it.

The sound sliced through the noise. The two of them broke apart instantly.

The she-wolf pressed a hand over her mouth, a sharp gasp escaping her lips.

"Oh," she breathed, her eyes going wide as she looked at me. "It looks like your fated mate just found you."

The blonde Alpha didn't look thrilled. He slid off his stool, gently assisted the brunette to her feet, and lifted her knuckles to his lips for a lingering kiss, offering her an easy grin.

"I would say she found me," he corrected, his tone laced with heavy annoyance. "Give me just a minute, darling."

Darling?

My world tilted on its axis. Did he already have someone else?

The brunette flushed a deep red, giggling softly as she nodded and slipped away into the crowd. Once she was out of earshot, my mate turned his full, towering attention onto me. The warmth vanished from his features, leaving behind a chilling mask.

"What is your name?" he demanded. The sheer lack of emotion in his voice sent a slab of ice sliding down my spine.

"Freya," I managed to stumble out, my confidence shattering on the floor.

"Freya," he repeated. For a fraction of a second, the sound of my name in his deep voice felt like an absolute triumph. "I have zero interest in being with you."

I squeezed my eyes shut for a second, my brain refusing to translate the words. Had he actually just said that?

Inside my head, Lyra unleashed a devastating howl of pure agony, retreating into the darkest corners of my mind to curl up in absolute misery.

When I failed to form a response, he simply kept talking.

"She is the mate I have chosen for myself," he stated bluntly, stripping away any room for misunderstanding. "And I happen to love her."

He tilted his head toward the distant table, a soft, genuine smile breaking through his stoic features as he watched the brunette walk away. It was the exact expression I had spent years dreaming my mate would reserve solely for me.

"I plan to officially mate her before the summer is over," he continued, slowly turning his hardened gaze back to mine. "I, Alpha Kaelen Blackwood of the Blood Roar Pack, reject you, Freya, as my mate and Luna."

A vicious, blinding agony detonated inside my chest. I gasped for air, clutching at my torso as the rejection physically tore through my system, leaving a hollow, freezing void where my heart had been beating seconds ago.

"You have to say the words," Kaelen instructed with chilling indifference. "Otherwise, the bond will physically torture you every time I take her to bed."

The mental image hit me like a physical blow. I absolutely refused to be subjected to the agonizing sensation of him touching another woman.

I dragged a ragged breath into my lungs, fighting past the suffocating restriction in my throat.

"Alpha Kaelen Blackwood," I choked out, forcing myself to stand tall despite the pain tearing me apart. "I, Freya Ironbark of the Ironbound Pack, accept your rejection."

A sharp gasp tore from Kaelen's lips. His eyes widened significantly, the calm facade finally fracturing, but before he could formulate a single word, I spun around and sprinted for the exit.

"Who needs a filthy, disloyal mate anyway?" Lyra had snarled in the aftermath, desperately trying to shield my fractured mind.

The vivid flashback finally receded, dumping me back into the present reality of the Zenith ballroom.

"Why?" I demanded, the memory fueling a fresh wave of hostility as I glared up at him. "Did she suddenly cross paths with her actual fated mate and throw you away, just like you threw me away?"

"No," he answered simply.

He gave a slow shake of his head and closed the distance between us with a single, deliberate stride.

My eyebrows pulled together in utter confusion.

What game was he playing? What was the actual point of him tracking me down here?

"Then explain the miraculous change of heart," I challenged him, locking my knees and squaring my posture to match his imposing height.

In any other circumstance, challenging an Alpha of his standing would result in immediate retaliation. Instead, a dark, dangerous curve claimed his lips. He stepped entirely past the boundaries of personal space, his massive frame trapping me in place. The heat rolling off his chest seeped into my dress, and when he lowered his head, his warm breath ghosted across the sensitive skin beneath my ear, sending an involuntary, electric shiver straight down my spine.

"I came to claim you, little mate."
