Wasteland Harvester

Thalia stepped up to the front desk inside the primary earthen fortress and tapped her smartwatch against the scanner. A dull beep echoed through the low-ceilinged lobby as five hundred credits vanished from her balance, leaving her with barely twelve points to her name. In exchange, the clerk tossed an iron keycard onto the counter without looking up.

She took the card, followed a dim corridor lit by flickering fluorescent strips, and found the door marked with faded paint. Inside, the space was tiny and stripped of comfort—just raw concrete walls, a narrow metal cot with a thin mattress, and a vent humming faintly in the corner. She slid the heavy bolt into place, tossed her pack onto the cot, and took a long breath.

Out here, safety was an illusion bought with preparation. She emptied the contents of her pack across the mattress to sort her equipment. In the wasteland, mutant insects and venomous arachnids ruled the brush. A single puncture from an overgrown hornet or a burrowing tick could liquefy flesh within hours. Full coverage was not a matter of comfort; it was the line between walking back alive and rotting in the dirt.

Thalia pulled on her puncture-resistant undersuit, cinching the seals at her wrists and ankles. Next came her combat boots with reinforced soles, followed by a dual-filter respirator mask that locked over her nose and mouth. She secured a utility belt around her waist, slotting three canisters of heavy-duty bug repellent into the side loops alongside a handful of compressed nutrition bars. Finally, she strapped her alloy dagger to her right thigh. The blade had cost a thousand hard-earned credits back at the central settlement. Crafted from high-density composite steel, its edge could slice through sheet metal and pierce the scaled hide of Level 1 mutant beasts.

Leaving her spare clothing, water canteen, and sleeping mat locked inside the room, she carried only her harvest pouch and tools. She slipped out through the fort’s reinforced auxiliary gate, sliding past the mercenary sentries who stood watch behind sandbag emplacements.

Outside, the late afternoon sun hung low over the horizon, casting long shadows across the wasteland. Thalia ducked behind a granite boulder fifty yards beyond the perimeter fence and willed her status panel into view.

A pale blue screen flickered before her eyes:

Name: Thalia Vane

Age: 18

Race: Human

Physique: 10

Agility: 5

Strength: 7

Energy: 10/10

Ability: Level 1 Harvesting Ability (EXP: 3,450/5,000)

Two years of grueling scrap work had brought her from Level 0 to Level 1. The progress felt slow, but every point was earned with sweat. Her maximum Energy pool sat at ten points. Emptying that pool meant mental exhaustion or unconsciousness, meaning every single activation had to count.

She closed the interface and moved forward. The path sloped downward into the fringes of the mutant forest. Calling it a forest was generous; it was a wild sprawl of overgrown grass, towering stalks, and distorted flora that shot twenty to thirty feet into the sky. Century-old fallout had warped the local ecosystem, turning mundane weeds into predatory giants.

Thalia moved with light, deliberate steps. Ahead of her, two mammoth trunks supported a sticky, translucent web stretching six feet wide. In the center of the silk hung the dried carapace of an overgrown beetle, its chitinous leg dangling loose in the breeze. She circled wide around the web, keeping her boots clear of the adhesive strands, and cut through a patch of damp ferns.

Ten minutes into the brush, a cluster of massive plants caught her eye.

Thalia stopped behind a rotting log and peered through the leaves. Growing in a shallow ditch was a dense thicket of mutant shepherd's purses. Unlike the tiny greens that had grown in pre-disaster soil, these stalks reached over six feet tall, with ribbed stems as thick as bowls and clusters of pale seeds nodding at their crowns. What made them truly distinct, however, was the dark vapor curling off the leaves like slow smoke.

She raised her left wrist and aimed the scanner on her smartwatch at the nearest stem.

The screen flashed red: Contamination Value: 318.

Standard wasteland protocols were clear on contamination levels. Anything under ten was pure. Values between eleven and thirty were considered low grade. Thirty-one to seventy counted as moderate and could be eaten in small quantities without severe side effects. Seventy-one to a hundred carried heavy toxicity, enough to trigger fever and nausea. Anything crossing three hundred was considered lethal hazard territory, capable of corrupting human tissue through prolonged airborne contact alone.

Normally, harvesters turned back the moment their scanner crossed three hundred. But Thalia looked at the wide leaves and tightened her grip. The surrounding area had already been picked clean by other gatherers, and she could not afford to return to the camp with empty hands.

She stepped toward the ditch, raised her right hand, and touched the thick stalk of the nearest shepherd's purse.

"Harvest," she whispered.

A flare of pure white light erupted from her palm, spreading along the veins of the plant like glowing frost. The dark vapor hissed as the light scrubbed through the fibers.

A clear prompt chimed in her mind:

*Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +2. Obtained mutant shepherd's purse. Contamination Value: 55.*

Thalia pulled her hand back, her eyes wide beneath the visor. The stalk before her had softened into a vibrant, healthy green, its toxic haze gone. Even better, the prompt had awarded two experience points instead of the usual one. The dense toxicity of the plant had doubled her skill growth while purifying the vegetable into an edible grade.

"Double experience," she murmured, a grin tugging at the corners of her mouth.

Without hesitating, she grasped the next stalk and channeled her power again.

*Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +2. Obtained mutant shepherd's purse. Contamination Value: 54.*

*Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +2. Obtained mutant shepherd's purse. Contamination Value: 55.*

She moved down the row, working until her temples began to throb with a dull ache. She checked her energy reserve: 1/10.

Knowing better than to run herself dry in the field, Thalia immediately stopped. She bundled the purified stalks into her harvest pouch, slipped back into a cluster of thick shrubs, and crouched low against the damp soil. She cracked open her respirator seal just enough to slide in a synthetic nutrition bar, chewing the bland paste while keeping her eyes locked on the surroundings.

From the brush forty paces away, faint rustling broke the silence.

Three scavengers crept along the edge of the clearing. Their clothes were shredded rags patched with duct tape, and their faces carried the hollow, sun-scorched look of men who had spent weeks scavenging scrap for a meal. Their eyes drifted over the trampled clearing, quickly spotting the fresh cuts on the shepherd's purse patch before snapping directly toward Thalia’s hiding spot.

Greed flashed across their faces as they spotted her stuffed pack. They spread out, stepping through the weeds with makeshift pipe clubs and rusted rebar in hand.

Thalia did not scramble or shout. She swallowed the last bite of her bar, rose smoothly to her feet, and stepped into the open.

Her right hand dropped to her thigh. With a clean, metallic rasp, she drew the alloy dagger from its sheath. The polished blade caught the dying sunlight, throwing a cold glint across the clearing. She pulled a clean cloth from her belt, met the eyes of the lead scavenger, and slowly wiped the flat of the steel from hilt to tip.

The three men stopped dead in their tracks. They knew high-grade steel when they saw it. A weapon like that cost more than their combined gear, and solo harvesters who carried military-grade blades were rarely easy targets.

The man in the lead spat onto the dirt, held up an open palm to his companions, and backed away into the shadows. The other two followed without a sound, vanishing into the tall grass.

Thalia waited until their scent cleared, then sheathed her dagger. She checked her status. Rest had brought her Energy back up to three points.

"Time to push deeper," she said quietly.

Common greens were fine for filling an empty stomach, but medicinal herbs commanded real value back at the fort's trading posts. Hemostatic roots and anti-toxin stalks fetched enough points to buy ammunition and proper rations.

She kept off the main animal paths, cutting through thick groves of mutated bamboo and overgrown fiddlehead ferns. Ten minutes deeper into the woods, the light dimmed beneath a thick canopy of interwoven vines.

She parted a curtain of broad leaves and froze.

Rising from a mound of black loam was an enormous mutant thistle. The plant stood sixteen feet tall, rising into the shadows like a spiked pillar. Its central trunk measured three feet in diameter, covered in defensive thorns the size of hunting daggers. Giant purple flower heads drooped from the upper crown, weeping sticky, amber sap that sizzled where it dripped onto the moss.

Thalia brought her smartwatch forward to scan the base.

The screen flashed an urgent amber warning: Contamination Value: 500+.

The air around the trunk smelled of bitter sulfur. If the external leaves registered over five hundred, the sap inside was likely past a thousand. Ordinary skin contact would burn through protective fabric in seconds.

Thalia adjusted her respirator seals, stepped into range, and reached out toward a low-hanging leaf. She triggered her skill.

*Ding. Energy -1. Harvest failed.*

Thalia blinked in surprise.

Her Harvesting Ability had never failed on common vegetation. There was only one rule that triggered an outright failure: when the biological tier of the specimen sat three or more levels above the user's skill rank. Since her harvest ability was currently Level 1, this specimen had to be at least Level 4.

Her pulse kicked into a frantic beat.

A Level 4 medicinal herb was an extraordinary prize. High-grade hemostatic potions brewed from Level 4 thistles were traded by the gram in central trading hubs, bought up by elite hunting squads before they ever hit the general market.

Leaving the entire plant behind made her teeth ache with frustration, especially after burning a precious point of Energy. But attempting to harvest the whole sixteen-foot beast was impossible at her current level.

She rubbed her chin, eyes scanning the massive structure of the plant. A thick lateral branch jutted out five feet from the base, loaded with thorns and dense leaves.

"If I can't take the tree, I'll take the branch," she whispered.

She drew her alloy dagger, stepped close, and hacked into the base of the lateral shoot. The steel bit deep into the tough fiber. With three hard strikes, the three-foot branch tore free and hit the dirt. Thalia grabbed the clean end of the wood, dragged it twenty feet into a secluded fern thicket, and crouched over it.

She placed her gloved hand onto the severed branch.

"Harvest."

Pure white light erupted from her fingers, flooding the three-foot stem until every spine glowed with radiant energy.

*Ding. Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +10. Obtained Level 4 mutant thistle branch. Contamination Value: 68. Usable for brewing high-grade hemostatic potions.*

The light faded, leaving behind a pristine, jade-green branch that felt cool and firm beneath her gloves, its deadly toxins stripped down to a harmless baseline. Meanwhile, the cut stump left behind on the giant thistle withered into a shriveled pile of gray-black rot, collapsing into dust against the loam.

Thalia held the glowing green branch close, her chest heaving as giddy laughter bubbled up in her throat.
