A Promise of Ruin
I shake my head. The movement is sharp, jagged, and driven by pure panic. The distant, muffled bass of the club music throbs through the floorboards, a jarring contrast to the heavy silence stretching between us in the VIP room. I squeeze my eyes shut until bright spots dance behind my eyelids, pleading and willing this waking nightmare to dissolve back into the shadows. But when I open my eyes again, the harsh reality remains unchanged. Dario just sits there. He leans back against the plush leather chair and watches me with a cold, calculated smile. He looks like a ruthless predator toying with his trapped prey. He is relishing the sight of my crumbling emotional state, absorbing every terrified tremor that shakes my frame. The chill of the air conditioning raises goosebumps on my bare arms, but it does nothing to cool the flush of terror burning my skin.
"But you are married. You have moved on. What are you saying?" I whisper, my vocal cords tight and strained. My voice is shaking so badly I can barely form the words.
His response is a low, cruel laugh. It is a dark, rumbling sound that slices straight through my chest and settles like a block of ice in the pit of my stomach.
"I never said I loved you. I never said I was going to marry you," he taunts, his tone dripping with venom that paralyzes my limbs. He leans forward, resting his forearms on his tailored thighs, his gaze pinning me in place. "What I did say is that you are my toy. I am going to use you until there is nothing left. I am going to have fun destroying every piece of you."
Desperation takes over, drowning out any rational thought. My hands clench into tight fists at my sides, my short fingernails biting into the callused skin of my palms as I try to ground myself. I cannot let this happen. I cannot let him drag me back into the dark, suffocating abyss of the mafia world. I have built a quiet, hidden life from the ashes of my past, and he is threatening to burn it all down again.
"Please, Dario, just forget I exist. I am so sorry for whatever happened in the past. Please, just let it go." The words spill from my mouth in a frantic rush.
But Dario Cassano is a man who never goes back on his word. The ruthless set of his sharp jaw and the dangerous glint in his dark eyes tell me my apologies are falling on deaf ears. He rises from his chair, a towering figure of power and lethal intent.
"Five years ago, you thought you could play with my feelings." He closes the distance between us with slow, measured steps. "You thought you could manipulate me and make a mockery of my pride. Now, the time has come, Serafina. I have returned to collect my debt."
His eyes drop from my face, raking over my cheap clothes in a slow, degrading sweep. He takes in the faded, stained fabric of my waitress uniform, the scuffed material of my worn-out shoes, and the deep exhaustion etched into my posture. A harsh sneer twists his handsome features as he mocks my pathetic state.
"Look at you. Princess Serafina, the girl who once had everything handed to her on a silver platter, reduced to living in rags. You have been struggling to survive off the meager tips of abusive men. It is quite the tragic fall from grace."
The humiliation breaks me. The sheer weight of his mockery crushes the fragile barrier holding my emotions in check. I have spent five years breaking my back scrubbing sticky floors to put food on the table, swallowing my pride every single day, only to have him drag my struggles through the mud. As hot, heavy tears spill over my eyelashes and track down my pale face, he steps close again. His towering presence blocks out the dim lighting of the room, casting a dark, oppressive shadow over my trembling body.
With a slow movement, he reaches out. His large hand hovers near my face. I flinch hard, bracing for a strike, but his thumb catches a single tear rolling down my cheek. He wipes it away, his rough skin burning my cold flesh. He pulls his hand back, places that wet thumb into his mouth, and swallows. The intimacy and madness of the gesture sends a shiver down my spine.
"I love the taste of your tears," he murmurs.
The underlying threat in his soft tone is the most terrifying thing I have ever heard.
"There is going to be a lot of crying for you in the future."
Panic swells inside my chest, rising up to choke me. The dark promise in his words threatens to shatter my sanity. My mind races away from this suffocating room and flies to my tiny son. Dante. My sweet, innocent boy is waiting for me in our cramped, rundown apartment. He relies on me for everything. If Dario destroys me, Dante will be left all alone in a city that eats orphans alive. I have to survive this encounter for my baby. I cannot let this dangerous man break me. Trying to project a false sense of strength, I force my spine straight and square my shoulders against his imposing figure.
"I left the Famiglia years ago. I was just a naive, stupid teenager back then. Please, show some mercy and let me go." I stare into his eyes, praying he sees a broken woman who is no longer worth his time or his vengeance.
In response to my plea, he steps back and gives me a sarcastic standing ovation. The loud claps echo off the walls of the empty room, mocking my desperate attempt at bravery. His hands drop, and his face falls into a rigid, emotionless mask.
"Now. Get on your knees."
The authoritative command hits me like a physical blow. My breath catches in my throat. Every instinct in my body screams to run, but his suffocating presence glues my feet to the floor. I stare at him in disbelief, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
"Are you going to execute me right here?" I ask in a trembling voice, terrified of what he plans to do.
He reaches out and lazily twists a stray strand of my hair around his long finger. A dark, sinister chuckle rumbles deep in his chest.
"Killing you publicly in a restaurant would be a massive hassle that you are simply not worth." He leans in closer, his lips brushing against the shell of my ear as he whispers the rest. "Though I could easily chop you up and feed you to my dogs without anyone in this city blinking an eye."
A cold sweat breaks out across my forehead. His expression turns detached and devoid of humanity, staring at me as if I am nothing more than a minor inconvenience waiting to be disposed of.
"On your knees. Little songbird."
My legs give out. I sink down to the carpet, the rough fibers biting into my bare knees. I look up at him from the floor, feeling desperate and drowning in the sheer power he radiates.
"What do you want, Dario? What will make you let me go?" The plea rips from my raw throat.
He reaches down, gripping my chin with brutal force. His fingers dig into my jawline as he tilts my head up, trapping my gaze. I am forced to stare directly into his lethal, unforgiving eyes.
"I want everything. And I am never letting you go," he declares, his gaze burning into mine, searing his ownership into my soul. "Because you belong to me."
A cruel smirk spreads across his handsome lips, highlighting the wicked satisfaction dancing in his eyes.
"You have just become one of the many whores at my disposal. So, congratulations. You just won the lottery."
Horrified by the degradation of his words, a fierce wave of anger cuts through my terror. I have scrubbed toilets, endured disgusting comments from drunk patrons, and starved myself just to keep a roof over my head. I have clawed my way through hell for the past five years, and I refuse to let him reduce me to a mere object for his twisted entertainment.
"I will never do that. I would never stoop so low after all the agonizing struggles I have suffered over the past five years. Never!" I vow out loud, my voice ringing with a fragile defiance.
But Dario just stares down at me. He is amused by my pathetic rebellion. He stands tall and immovable, radiating a powerful aura that suffocates the remaining fight out of my lungs. He releases my chin and lightly brushes his rough fingers across my trembling lips, tracing the shape of my mouth with a chilling gentleness.
"You have no choice," he says with a terrifying calmness. "From now on, you have no say."
He takes a slow step back, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. The silence stretches between us, heavy and dangerous, before he decides to dangle his devastating leverage directly over my head.
"I could always go to the Famiglia and tell them the truth. I could tell them you destroyed our family's house, staged your own death, and ran away like a traitor."
The blood drains from my face in a rush. The room spins around me, the memory of the fire and the choking smoke flashing behind my eyes. My heart stops beating for a solid second as the full weight of his threat crashes down on my shoulders. If the Famiglia finds out I am alive, they will hunt me down. A traitor's sentence is a guaranteed death. And worse, they will find Dante. They will rip my son away from me and throw him into the very nightmare I sacrificed everything to escape.
He studies my terror-stricken face. He drinks in the pure fear shining in my wide eyes, dissecting my reaction with precision. His voice drops into a mocking, investigative taunt as he questions the purpose of all that grand drama. He leans in closer, his imposing frame blocking out the light, his dark eyes narrowing on my face.
"What exactly have you been doing all these years, Serafina?"
I shake my head, the rapid motion dizzying. My breath catches in my tight throat, choking off any possible words. I clench my jaw so hard my teeth grind together. I cannot tell him. I will not tell him. I vow internally to take the existence of my son to the grave before I ever let this monster know about my sweet boy.
