The VIP Room

I push through the heavy glass doors of the restaurant, my lungs burning as I try to catch my breath. The rapid thumping of my heart hammers a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I am late to work again. Having a four-year-old child is an uphill battle every single day, but leaving Dante this morning nearly broke my spirit. He woke up burning with a sick fever, his small body shivering under our thin blankets. I had no money for a doctor, so I had no choice but to carry him down the hall and drop him off with my elderly neighbor, Gemma. I promised to pay her tonight with whatever tips I managed to scrape together from this shift. I kissed his flushed forehead and ran out the door.

The minute my scuffed shoes hit the marble floor of the exclusive dining area, a thick, suffocating tension wraps tight around my throat. This high-end restaurant caters to the city's elite, usually filled with an elegant hum of clinking crystal and polite conversation. Today, the atmosphere is jagged. Staff members dart down the hallways with pale faces and rigid postures. I weave through the back corridors to change into my black uniform before anyone notices my tardiness. As a single mother who plummeted from a life of riches to possessing nothing, I desperately need this job to keep my son alive.

"Where have you been, Serafina?" Silas barks.

I flinch, halting in my tracks. My manager is a composed man who thrives under the chaotic pressure of the service industry. I got this lifeline of a job because I saved him on the street during a mugging last year, and he repaid my courage by handing me a steady paycheck. He never yells at me. But right now, his jaw is tight with an unfamiliar panic, and sweat beads at his temples.

"I am so sorry, Silas. Dante is sick today, and I had to find someone to sit with him." I try to keep my voice steady.

"Hurry up and change. I need you in my office." He turns on his heel and marches away.

I strip off my street clothes, pull on my crisp uniform, and scurry down the hall to his private office. When I step through the doorway, two intimidating men are standing over his desk. Their faces are blank slabs of granite, and the custom cut of their dark suits screams dangerous money. Silas gives them a tense nod, dismissing them. They turn and walk out, brushing past my shoulders without a single glance. I step inside and shut the door behind me.

Silas spins toward me, his chest heaving with an agitated breath.

"I need you to cover the upstairs VIP room. Cleo had a panic attack and locked herself in the supply closet. You are the only one left with enough nerve to do this."

I stare at him, my stomach twisting into painful knots. I have worked here for eight months, and ordinary staff members are banned from the second floor.

"Silas, you know my situation. I cannot afford any trouble. I need my tips tonight to pay my neighbor." I say the words in a rush.

"Listen to me very carefully, Serafina. When you go up there, you are a statue. A ghost. You do not listen to what they say. You do not make eye contact. You don’t see anyone. You don’t hear anything. You take orders. You serve. You leave. Do you understand?"

His eyes are wide with a fearful intensity, boring into my skull.

I nod my head, forcing my tightened throat to swallow.

"Yes, Silas. I understand." I step backward out of the office and head toward the winding staircase.

I climb the plush carpeted steps, my hands trembling by my sides. The heavy oak double doors to the VIP room loom ahead. I push them open and step inside.

The atmosphere hits me like a physical blow to the chest. The air is thick, choking me with the heavy scent of expensive cigar smoke and spilled dark liquor. Dozens of men sprawl across the luxurious velvet sofas, their suit jackets unbuttoned. They lean in close, whispering hushed, dangerous deals that dictate the criminal underworld. Hired women are draped heavily over their laps. Rough hands roam freely over their exposed skin, gripping bare waists and sliding up sheer thighs. Underneath the scent of leather and designer cologne, there is an underlying metallic tang of violence that I recognize instantly.

I know that scent. I know the ink peeking out from their cuffs. I know these men.

It is the Mafia.

This is the dark, ruthless world I once belonged to. The very same treacherous world I swore on my life I would never return to. Panic flares deep in my chest, screaming at me to turn around and run, but Dante’s feverish face flashes in my mind. I need the money to keep him alive. I have to survive this shift.

Remembering Silas’s strict instructions, I keep my head down, gluing my eyes to the patterned rug. I weave through the massive room, clearing empty whiskey glasses and wiping down the mahogany tables with a damp cloth. I pretend to be a shadow. I pretend I am invisible.

Then, a rough hand clamps hard onto my ass, squeezing my flesh through the thin fabric of my uniform skirt.

Instinct takes over before common sense can stop me. I whip around and slap his hand away.

The sharp smack of skin against skin echoes. A chorus of roaring, mocking laughter erupts from the dangerous men seated around the sprawling table. They howl at my sudden defiance, their predatory eyes stripping me bare. I try to retreat into the shadows, turning my body toward the exit.

Before I can take a single step, a giant man reaches out and grips my wrist with crushing force, yanking me to a dead halt. His thick fingers dig painfully into my bones. He reaches into his dark jacket with his free hand, peels off several crisp bills, and callously tosses them directly against my chest. The green money flutters to the floor, landing scattered around my plain black work shoes.

"This money could feed you for a year. So what do you say? Why don’t we take this to the bathroom and get it over with quickly?" He flashes a smirk, his greedy eyes raking over my chest and hips.

I swallow the rising panic in my throat, forcing my face to remain a blank, unreadable mask despite the terror coursing through my veins.

"Thank you, but I’m working right now." I try to tug my captured wrist free from his vice grip.

His hold only tightens, his smirk twisting into a cruel sneer. Another man, sitting right beside him, reaches out and grabs my other arm. He yanks me hard, attempting to forcefully haul me onto his lap. I thrash against their iron grips, digging the rubber heels of my shoes deep into the carpet to anchor myself. My heart races with a blind panic as the room buzzes with a humiliating, degrading amusement. They are enjoying my frantic struggle. They love watching a helpless waitress fight back.

"Stop!"

The single command cuts through the chaotic noise like a sharp blade. The voice is deep, lethal, and possessed an unquestionable authority that demands immediate obedience.

The laughter in the room dies instantly. A terrified, suffocating silence crashes down over the men, replacing their crude amusement with sheer dread.

For the very first time since entering this den of monsters, I lift my eyes and look toward the head of the long table.

Oh my God.

My blood runs cold. My breath abandons my lungs. My entire body becomes paralyzed, rooted to the floorboards.

My past has caught up to me.

It is him.

Dario.

He sits there in the center of the shadows, an undisputed king in a bespoke black suit. He is the man I used to love. The man I ran away from to protect myself.

Oblivious to the world-shattering turmoil ripping through my mind, the man holding me captive chuckles nervously, trying to break the heavy tension strangling the room.

"What is it, Don? I’m just having a little fun. Is she one of your whores or something?"

The silence that follows his question is deafening. Nobody moves. Nobody dares to breathe.

"As a matter of fact, she is." Dario speaks, his voice smooth and freezing cold.

Pure shock roots me in place. Dario leans forward slowly, resting his powerful forearms on the edge of the glass table. He locks his dark, bottomless eyes directly onto mine, pinning me down with an intense stare that makes my knees threaten to buckle.

"She is my little toy. And I don’t like other people playing with my toys." Every word drips with a lethal possessiveness.

The man holding my wrist releases me as if my skin burned him to the bone, stumbling back in his leather chair. He scrambles away, stammering out desperate, pathetic apologies to the Don.

My heart slams against my ribs, beating a frantic, agonizing rhythm in my chest.

He is the Don now?

How did this happen? What happened to his ruthless father? How did the boy I loved turn into the terrifying boss sitting at the head of a Mafia table?

As my mind races with a million terrified questions, spinning out of control, a low, mocking snicker slices through the heavy silence from across the table.

"Your pretty little Russian wife wouldn’t like that."
