The Elusive Mate

The Scarlet Maw ballroom choked on the stench of desperate ambition and heavy floral perfumes.

Magnus remained a frozen pillar of lethal indifference against the edge of the dance floor. The visiting monarch completely ignored the crystal chandeliers and the endless parade of dressed-up females thrust into his peripheral vision. Every local aristocrat instinctively kept a wide berth, repelled by the crushing weight of his restrained authority.

Only Luna Lorelai dared to bridge the gap.

She hovered just steps away, draped in shimmering fabric that barely qualified as clothing. The gown dipped scandalously low across her chest and featured a brazen slit running all the way up her thigh. She shifted her weight, intentionally angling her exposed skin to catch the firelight, practically begging for the King’s gaze.

*‘I cannot decide if she is attempting to seduce you or actively challenging your patience,’* Zevran’s dry voice slid through their private mental link.

Magnus kept his silver eyes locked on the swirling crowd, offering his General no outward reaction to the mockery.

*‘With that murderous expression on your face, no one else is brave enough to approach,’* Zevran continued, his telepathic tone laced with clear disgust. *‘Though how her own Alpha tolerates this public display is beyond my comprehension. The woman is virtually naked.’*

Magnus refused to even glance in the Luna's direction.

*‘My mate is not inside this hall,’* Magnus answered through the bond, his mental voice flat and absolute.

Zevran shifted his stance, the sudden tension visible in the line of his shoulders. *‘Not here? You were entirely convinced—’*

*‘I was,’* Magnus interrupted smoothly. *‘Her scent hit me the moment we crossed the pack borders. It was faint, but unmistakable. Now there is absolutely nothing. She is gone.’*

Deep within his chest, Garmr began to thrash.

*‘Not here,’* the massive wolf growled, throwing his tremendous weight against Magnus’s mental barriers in a sudden spike of panic. *‘You promised she would be here.’*

Magnus curled his fingers against his thighs, fighting to keep his physical posture relaxed as his beast spiraled into a frenzy.

*‘Let me out,’* Garmr demanded, the primal urgency bleeding rapidly into rage. *‘We have to track her. Protect her.’*

*‘Enough,’* Magnus snapped back internally, applying a crushing layer of logic over the animal's frantic instincts. *‘You will not lose your grip in the middle of a diplomatic event. Hold your ground.’*

*‘She is in danger!’* Garmr roared, his claws scraping violently against the inside of Magnus's mind. *‘Every second we stand in this perfumed cage is a second wasted!’*

Magnus dragged in a slow, controlled breath through his nose, focusing on the terrible music and the screeching laughter of the pack nobles to drown out his wolf. Lorelai took another deliberate step closer, her cloying, manufactured perfume washing over him and making Garmr snarl with revulsion.

Zevran observed the rigid set of his sovereign's jaw, fully aware of the internal war taking place. *‘Perhaps,’* the General suggested carefully, *‘we could interrogate the Luna. Cross-reference the guest list to see which eligible females failed to attend—’*

A deafening blast ripped through the estate.

The blaring wail of the alarm horn shattered the music, vibrating violently through the heavy stone floor beneath their boots.

The entire ballroom froze in collective shock.

Then the polished veneer broke, giving way to absolute pandemonium. Crystal goblets shattered against the tiles as terrified guests collided with one another. Pack guards shoved their way toward the heavy oak doors, barking overlapping orders that were entirely drowned out by the screaming crowd.

“Rogues!” a bleeding sentry shouted, stumbling through the main entrance. “Rogues have breached the line!”

Garmr stopped his frantic pacing instantly.

*‘Rogues,’* the beast snarled, a terrifying, possessive fury taking over his consciousness. *‘And our female is missing.’*

Magnus let his Alpha instincts slide to the forefront, his vision sharpening into a predator's lethal focus.

*‘Our mate!’* Garmr roared, his voice bouncing against the inside of Magnus's skull with deafening force. *‘We hunt for her right now!’*

The faint, panicked howls of defending warriors drifted in from the southern edge of the territory, carrying the distinct metallic tang of fresh blood on the night wind.

*‘No,’* Magnus replied with ironclad authority. *‘We neutralize the invaders first. Once the perimeter is secure, she will be safe from the fallout.’*

*‘You are a fool!’* Garmr slammed against his restraint, utterly feral and desperate. *‘The threat is already inside! She is vulnerable! We secure our female first, then we slaughter the rest!’*

Magnus planted his boots firmly, refusing to yield control to the beast's violent demands.

*‘Abandoning a pack during an active siege guarantees mass casualties,’* Magnus argued coldly. *‘Chaos draws more scavengers. We crush this attack immediately, and we save everyone. Including her.’*

*‘If they lay a single claw on her while you play politics—’*

*‘They will not,’* Magnus promised ruthlessly. *‘Not while I am breathing.’*

He turned his attention toward the open doors, watching the local warriors flood past in messy, undisciplined formations. Then his gaze snapped to Alpha Kaelen.

The Scarlet Maw leader was standing perfectly still near the head table.

He was not shouting orders.

He was not shifting into his wolf.

He was not running toward the bloodshed.

Magnus closed the distance in three long strides, his expression dropping into a mask of pure ice.

“Alpha Kaelen,” Magnus said, his tone dangerously quiet. “Which sector of your land is currently under siege?”

Kaelen flinched, straightening his posture in a pathetic attempt to look authoritative.

“The southern border,” Kaelen answered, gesturing vaguely toward the windows. “But there is absolutely no need for us to intervene.”

Magnus simply stared at him.

“My front-line warriors are already engaging them,” Kaelen rushed to explain, his voice pitching higher under the King's dead-eyed scrutiny. “If the rogues manage to push through that line, my Delta units are positioned to take over. We will only step onto the field if it becomes absolutely necessary.”

A suffocating silence descended over their immediate circle.

Magnus processed the words, a cold disgust replacing his initial disbelief.

This was a designated leader who refused to bleed with his own men. An Alpha who used his lower-ranking wolves as meat shields while he cowered behind his titles and a heavy wooden table.

*‘Spineless coward!’* Garmr howled, disgusted beyond measure. *‘He lets his people die while he hides! Our mate is stranded in a territory run by a weakling! Give me control. I will rip his throat out and carry her away from this pathetic pack!’*

Magnus slowly curled his fingers into tight fists.

The air pressure in the grand hall plummeted.

Magnus released his supreme aura, letting the ancient, crushing weight of his bloodline slam into the room like a physical shockwave. Moving warriors stumbled mid-step, groaning in sudden pain. Nearby Deltas collapsed onto one knee, gasping for air as their instincts forced them into immediate submission.

Kaelen’s knees buckled under the immense pressure, his breath hitching violently in his throat as the King's dominance forced him downward.

“That,” Magnus declared, his voice echoing with absolute judgment, “is not how this battle will be handled.”

Magnus stepped directly into Kaelen's personal space, towering over the trembling man.

“You will take me to the frontline,” Magnus ordered. “We will meet these rogues at the southern border, and we will wipe them out permanently.”

*‘Exactly as an Alpha should,’* Garmr rumbled, deeply satisfied by the display of pure dominance.

Magnus leaned down, locking his glowing silver eyes with the terrified pack leader.

“An Alpha does not cower behind his soldiers,” Magnus said, every word a lethal strike. “He does not gamble with the lives of his people. He stands on the bloody front line. He protects his borders. His pack. His future.”

Sweat dripped down Kaelen’s pale face as the King’s oppressive gravity threatened to crush his spine into the floor tiles.

“Yes,” Kaelen gasped out, his voice thin and reedy. “Yes, Alpha King.”

Kaelen dropped his chin to his chest, exposing his neck in total surrender.

“Yes, Alpha King!” Kaelen repeated, shouting it loud enough for the paralyzed onlookers to hear over the chaos.

Magnus turned his back on the pathetic display and marched toward the exit.

“Mobilize your guard,” Magnus ordered over his shoulder. “Right now.”

Inside him, Garmr pushed forward, his phantom teeth bared, ready for the slaughter.

*‘We track her the second this is over,’* Garmr demanded. *‘But if she has even a single scratch on her skin—’*

*‘They will never get the chance,’* Magnus replied grimly, striding out into the chaotic night as the roars of combat echoed through the trees.

No rogue would live long enough to threaten his Queen.

*‘I smell her!’* Garmr suddenly roared, the realization vibrating violently through Magnus’s bones. *‘She is out there! She is right in the middle of it!’*

Magnus broke into a dead sprint.

He let the beast flood his muscles with raw adrenaline, pushing their legs to move faster, harder, tearing up the manicured grass beneath his heavy boots. The metallic stench of torn flesh and the undeniable, magnetic pull in his chest dragged him straight toward the war zone.

Garmr snarled in anticipation as they blurred past the heavy tree trunks. The forest floor trembled as they moved like an unstoppable force of nature.

*‘Control your pace,’* Magnus warned internally, though his own heart was hammering with the exact same frantic urgency.

*‘No!’* Garmr snapped. *‘She is in combat! Our female is fighting a war without us!’*

The horrific sounds of the skirmish hit them before they cleared the tree line. Snapping jaws, agonized screams, and the wet crunch of shattering bones filled the air.

Magnus burst into the clearing.

He slammed to a complete halt.

Garmr went utterly silent in his mind.

The battlefield was completely covered in blood and torn bodies, but it was nothing like Magnus had anticipated.

A single woman stood in the exact epicenter of the massacre.

She was entirely human. There was no fur, no elongated claws, and no glowing predator eyes. She was simply a woman clutching a pair of steel swords, her feet planted firmly in the mud as if the gravity of the earth belonged solely to her. The dirt around her boots was soaked dark red with the blood of the massive rogue wolves lying dead in a circle around her.

Crouched behind her were a dozen injured Scarlet Maw warriors. They were bruised, bleeding, and alive solely because this unshifted woman was serving as their unbreakable shield.

Garmr’s breath caught.

*‘There,’* the great beast whispered, his voice dropping into a low, reverent rumble of pure devotion. *‘Mate.’*
