The Hidden Mate

Garmr ripped through Magnus's consciousness, a feral force of nature high on the sudden, electrifying strike of their mate's scent.

'She is here!' the massive wolf roared in their shared headspace, clawing violently at the mental cage. 'Let me out! I need to claim her!'

Magnus locked his knees, fighting the excruciating pull that threatened to drag his physical body straight into the unknown depths of the grounds.

'Hold your ground,' Magnus ordered, slamming his mental shields down like steel blast doors. 'Stand down, Garmr.'

'No!' The silver beast paced with murderous impatience. 'Our female is here. That eclipses everything. Give me control so I can see her.'

'This is not our land,' Magnus shot back, forcing his burning blood to steady. 'Did you forget the infiltration? We came to hunt down a traitor feeding intel to rogues, not to blindly chase a bond.'

'I do not care about their politics!' Garmr lashed out, throwing his weight against the barriers. 'Mate is the only priority. We track her, we take her, and we drag her back to our borders where she is safe.'

The magnetic drag of the bond spiked, dragging like iron hooks in Magnus's chest, yet he refused to yield a single inch of control.

'You will not blow this operation,' Magnus commanded with absolute authority. 'We hold our position.'

Footsteps crunched against the paved walkway, slicing through the internal war.

Alpha Kaelen strode out from the massive stone entryway of the packhouse, projecting a measured aura that immediately brushed against Magnus's shields in a silent gauge of power. A woman walked closely at his side.

The second the pair entered their line of sight, Garmr hurled himself at the mental restraints again.

“Alpha King Magnus,” Kaelen announced, halting at a respectful distance and bowing his head. “Welcome to the Scarlet Maw Pack. Please meet my Luna, Lorelai.”

The woman stepped ahead of her Alpha, wearing a carefully practiced, saccharine smile. Her gown was a deliberate provocation, cut dangerously low and slit high up the thigh, discarding every traditional rule of formal diplomatic modesty.

“Hello, Alpha King,” Lorelai purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. “It is an honor to have you on our lands.”

Her gaze dragged down the length of his chest, lingering with blatant, unfiltered hunger.

Garmr recoiled violently in disgust. 'She is not the one,' the wolf snarled, his focus violently jerking past her toward a faint, intoxicating trace drifting from deep within the compound. 'Ignore this female. Our mate is close.'

Magnus maintained a face of pure granite, offering a shallow nod that acknowledged their rank without yielding a sliver of dominance. “Alpha Kaelen. Luna Lorelai.”

Zevran shifted his weight just a fraction of an inch to the right.

'Are you seeing this?' Zevran transmitted through their private mind-link, sheer disbelief bleeding into the mental connection.

Magnus kept his eyes forward, though the physical heat of his Beta's irritation was palpable.

'She is actually throwing herself at you while her own Alpha watches,' Zevran noted.

Magnus quickly processed the spatial dynamics between the couple. 'Any Alpha who watches another male get propositioned by his own mate either has zero authority here, or zero actual bond to her,' Magnus linked back.

'A political arrangement,' Zevran concluded.

'Exactly.' A true fated mate would have torn the courtyard apart before allowing that kind of display.

Garmr clawed at the psychic walls again, entirely disinterested in the couple. 'Stop wasting time. The scent is driving me mad. I need to find her.'

Magnus squared his broad shoulders, the lethal reality of the situation clicking firmly into place.

Their true mate was somewhere on this compound.

With his beast already fracturing his control, navigating this treacherous political landscape had just escalated into a deadly powder keg.

“Let us head inside so we can discuss the grand mating ball,” Kaelen offered smoothly, gesturing toward the heavy oak doors. “We have gathered all available she-wolves for your consideration.”

The towering fortress behind Kaelen was draped in festive banners, reeking of forced pageantry.

Garmr erupted with bloodthirsty possessiveness.

'I will slaughter any female who dares breathe on us,' the beast vowed, his fangs bared in the shadows of Magnus's mind. 'I only want ours.'

Magnus clenched his jaw so hard his teeth ached. He noticed the Scarlet Maw perimeter guards stiffen, their instincts picking up the sudden, crushing weight of a predator's fury leaking into the air.

'Keep your teeth sheathed,' Magnus ordered his beast, tightly reining in his own aura. 'Zevran fed them the cover story about seeking a mate to get us through the gates. Do not blow it.'

'They are in my way,' Garmr growled.

Magnus locked his piercing blue eyes onto Kaelen, reading the slick, overly polished eagerness radiating from the local Alpha.

“The festivities can wait,” Magnus stated, his deep baritone carrying a concussive authority that immediately silenced the courtyard. “I am here to verify the structural integrity of your borders. I received intel regarding a severe rogue breach on your lands several months ago.”

He let the silence stretch, watching the atmospheric pressure plummet.

“Since I was traveling the continent in search of my fated mate, the severity of this incursion only reached my desk recently,” Magnus added smoothly.

The nearby warriors traded sharp, panicked glances. A flash of hidden unease crossed Kaelen’s face before he forcefully wrestled his expression back to neutral.

“We can address those historical matters privately in my office,” Kaelen managed, his welcoming smile turning brittle.

Before Magnus could take a step, a light, dismissive laugh broke the tense silence.

“Is all this grim business truly necessary right now?” Lorelai stepped directly into Magnus's personal space, radiating a cloying, heavy perfume that made his senses burn.

“Alpha Magnus, you traveled all this way to find a partner, not to dig up stale border reports. I poured my heart into organizing tonight’s ball for you.”

She tilted her head, her gaze sweeping over him with brazen intent. “And if destiny fails to deliver your fated one tonight, you might find a she-wolf perfectly willing to be chosen.”

'I am going to rip her throat out,' Garmr roared, violently revolted by the proximity of the foreign female.

Magnus stopped breathing for a beat, reining in the absolute violence humming in his veins.

“No,” Magnus said.

The single word hit the air like a physical strike.

Lorelai froze, her practiced smile cracking.

“My sole priority is the security of these territories,” Magnus continued, dropping his voice into a lethal, quiet register that forced every wolf in earshot to hold their breath. “The ball is irrelevant.”

He leveled a glacial stare directly at the Luna, refusing to yield a single inch. “What matters is how undocumented rogues bypassed your patrols. What matters is why Scarlet Maw wolves were slaughtered on their own soil without an alarm being raised.”

He stepped slightly closer to Kaelen, letting the full, suffocating weight of his Alpha King dominance flood the space.

“An infected border threatens my entire kingdom,” Magnus warned. “If your pack is bleeding, I will find out why.”

Kaelen quickly stepped between them, his face pale but determined as he turned on the woman.

“Luna Lorelai, step back immediately,” Kaelen ordered, his voice finally carrying a sharp whip of real authority.

Lorelai’s jaw tightened in blatant defiance, but she retreated a half-step, her calculating eyes still locked onto Magnus's face.

“We will have this discussion in my office,” Kaelen insisted, pivoting sharply toward the grand doors. “Right now.”

Garmr stopped thrashing, though the beast's low growl continued to vibrate against Magnus's ribs.

'That female reeks of deception,' Garmr observed coldly.

Magnus silently agreed.

As they moved toward the imposing stone entrance, Magnus felt the heavy, paranoid stares of the pack wolves tracking them from the shadows.

Something catastrophic had happened during that rogue strike, and Kaelen and Lorelai were actively burying the fallout.

The pack was rotting from the inside out, and with Garmr trapped in agonizing proximity to their undiscovered mate, this diplomatic mission was rapidly hurtling toward a bloodbath.
