The Unseen Fiance

Valerie shut the bedroom door behind her, sealing away the quiet, suffocating tension of the empty hallway. The firm click of the lock finalized her emotional closure regarding Dominic. She walked straight toward the bed, tossing her purse onto the mattress. Before she could even take a deep breath to steady her nerves, her phone lit up aggressively.

The screen flashed with a relentless barrage of notifications. A flood of desperate messages from Miriam poured in, stacking one on top of the other in rapid succession.

[Valerie, do you really have to be this stubborn? Are you seriously going to abandon the Thorne family? Generations of your father's blood, sweat, and tears, do you have the heart to watch our century-old foundation just collapse like this?]

[If you do this, how are your dad and I supposed to face the world?]

[I know you have been through hell with this. That Chloe is the one Dominic cannot forget, like a scar on his heart. Cannot you just suck it up and tough it out?]

[Men fool around all the time. If you cannot have the love, at least hold on tight to the money, right?]

[Valerie, please, I am begging you. Your dad is still in the hospital. If Thorne Group goes under for real, I do not know how I would face him or the rest of the family.]

Valerie stood frozen. She stared at the harsh glare of the screen, reading the wall of texts. She could feel the pathetic helplessness and toxic desperation laced through every single line. Each pleading word hit her like a physical knife to the chest, twisting deep into her ribs. Miriam was essentially begging her to swallow her pride and tolerate a blatant infidelity, just to keep the status quo intact. She was expected to smile, play the obedient wife, and turn a blind eye to her husband rushing off to comfort his mistress. The idea that she should endure a loveless, humiliating marriage just to act as a financial shield for her relatives was nauseating. It felt as though her own flesh and blood valued the company ledgers far more than her personal dignity.

She eyed the phone blankly for another long second. Her expression remained an unreadable mask, hiding the dull ache throbbing in her chest. She ruthlessly locked her screen, shutting off the frantic pleas. She refused to succumb to the emotional blackmail. She was not in the mood to dive into this toxic argument with Miriam right now.

The reality of the situation loomed over her. Tangled as the Thorne and Vance businesses were, stepping away was going to be a monumental task. Unraveling decades of shared assets, joint ventures, and intertwined supply chains would not be quick or easy. The Vance family had intentionally woven their capital into the very foundation of Thorne Group. Every major contract, every board decision, and every real estate acquisition seemed designed to keep the Thorne family firmly leashed to the Vance empire. However, she was firmly determined to neatly sever their joint dealings as fast as humanly possible. The best she could do right now was hustle to slice away the dead weight and protect what was left of her father's legacy.

With that firm resolution solidifying in her mind, Valerie unlocked her phone again. She scrolled straight past Miriam's ignored thread, found her assistant's contact, and prepared to draft the separation orders.

Just as her thumb hovered over the call button, the device vibrated fiercely in her palm.

A new caller ID flashed across the screen. It was a number she knew all too well now. Donovan Vaughan.

She had not bothered saving the contact yet, but after his previous calls, those digits had permanently stuck in her memory. She swiped to answer and lifted the phone to her ear.

"Valerie."

His low, resonant voice came through the speaker. For whatever reason, the specific cadence he used when saying her name carried a subtle, lingering intimacy. It sent a strange ripple through her otherwise numb state.

"Yeah, I am here." Valerie murmured, snapping out of her brief daze.

She knew a man like him did not call just to shoot the breeze. She waited in the brief quiet for him to reveal his hand.

Donovan bypassed the small talk and got straight to the point. "If you need a hand with anything, just say the word."

The raw magnitude of his offer did not register in her brain for a split second. When the meaning finally hit her, she let out a soft breath. He was currently away on some far-flung business trip, yet he remained sharper and more informed than anyone else in Alden. Donovan already knew about the massive financial fallout with Dominic. He knew the Thorne family was standing on the edge of a cliff, about to be pushed over by the Vance family's retaliatory wrath.

His intent was crystal clear. If she asked for help right in this exact moment, he would unleash the massive resources of the Vaughan Group to instantly save her family's empire. It would be a definitive lifesaver.

Valerie hesitated deeply. Her grip on the phone tightened.

She thought back to years ago, when the Thorne family stood on the ropes after a catastrophic market setback. The Vance family had stepped in to provide financial help. Back then, it felt like a sturdy raft in a raging storm. It got her family back onto solid ground. But the ugly truth revealed itself shortly after. The Vance family used that salvation to box them in. They weaponized the debt, utilizing it as leverage to control the Thorne businesses at every conceivable turn.

She had serious doubts about repeating history. Yes, Donovan's powerful involvement could instantly free them from the Vance family's suffocating grip while keeping the markets stable. But trading one corporate overlord for the powerhouse Vaughan family would just mean dancing to a brand new tune. It would be the exact same story playing out on a different stage. The Thorne family would still be leaning on outsiders to stay afloat, lacking a shred of true independence.

After finally breaking free from Dominic's golden cage, she refused to let her family survive by clinging to someone else's coattails again. Dominic’s brutal betrayal had been a severe wake-up call. The person you counted on could disappear or stab you in the back without warning. The only person she could truly rely on in this world was herself. She had to prop the company up with her own two hands, even if she still felt unsure about her own strength.

She gently turned him down, her voice steady and resolute. "Really, it is fine. I can take care of it. Thank you for the offer, Mr. Vaughan."

A low, amused chuckle drifted through the phone line. "Suit yourself. But I am right here whenever you change your mind."

Even after her firm refusal, Donovan left the door wide open. His calm assurance wove a strange, demanding new dynamic of protection around her, contrasting sharply with the heavy corporate pressure crushing her shoulders.

"Thank you." Valerie murmured after a long beat.

A pregnant silence settled between them. It stretched on, thick and heavy, until Donovan abruptly shifted the conversation.

"So, any thoughts on the wedding? Anything you want?" Donovan asked.

Valerie blinked, staring blankly at the far wall of her bedroom. The very idea of a wedding ceremony had never even crossed her mind. He had given her seven days to decide whether to register the marriage, but she had subconsciously assumed that meant a quick, sterile trip to the city hall.

Her thoughts drifted back to her engagement with Dominic. Even when they first discussed getting married, the Vance family had maliciously shot down the idea of a public ceremony from day one. Dominic had brushed the omission off with smooth excuses. He claimed elaborate weddings were exhausting, insisting he would rather just travel somewhere romantic with her instead.

Back then, she had bought the lie wholesale. She genuinely thought he simply hated the fuss and pageantry of high-society events. Now, the painful reality was glaringly obvious. The manipulation was deliberately designed to keep her hidden. He never wanted Chloe to find out about his wife, and perhaps he had never truly planned on treating her as a legitimate partner at all.

Stripped of any lingering romantic expectations, a bitter smile tugged at her lips. She shoved the pathetic memory aside.

"I do not really care. We do not have to have one." Valerie answered lightly.

Instantly, the atmosphere on the call shifted. Donovan’s voice cooled a few dangerous degrees, the low timber carrying a sharp, undeniable edge.

"Absolutely not. You are marrying me, Donovan. We are doing this with style, or not at all."

Valerie froze. She sensed his genuine, simmering annoyance radiating through the speaker. For a brief second, she considered pushing back. She almost reminded him that the seven-day deadline had not expired yet, and she had not officially agreed to the marriage in the first place. The defiant words hovered right on the tip of her tongue, but she quickly swallowed the urge. Provoking his temper right now seemed like a terrible strategic move.

Donovan forcefully filled the silence, refusing to let the issue drop. "Fine. I will plan it my way. Once I am back, we will sit down and go over the details together. And while I am gone, think about what you actually want. Because, Valerie, I do not do secret marriages, and I definitely do not shortchange my wife."

His stern declaration left no room for argument. The sharp contrast between Dominic's desperate need to hide her and Donovan's furious demand to showcase her publicly left her slightly dizzy. Eager to placate his sudden intensity, she backed down.

"Okay. Whatever you decide is fine." Valerie quickly answered.

That concession seemed to soothe the beast. His tone softened back to its usual confident hum. "Good. Talk soon."

He ended the call before she could offer another word.

Valerie lowered the phone, staring thoughtfully at the darkened screen. The sheer force of his personality lingered in the quiet room. Shortly after the tense call ended, her phone buzzed one more time.

It was a succinct text message from Donovan. It contained a screenshot of his private flight details. He would be back in Alden in exactly five days.

There was no accompanying message, but the unwritten translation staring back at her was blatantly obvious.

*Come pick me up.*

Valerie shook her head with a helpless, faint smile, typed a simple "Got it," and then immediately dialed her assistant.
