The Final Slap

Miriam pushed the hospital door open, her initial unease vanishing in a flash. She masked her awkwardness with an ingratiating, desperate smile, her eyes darting between the two figures on the bed. Grabbing Valerie by the arm, she shoved her daughter forward into the sterile room, forcing her past the threshold. Dominic lifted his head from Chloe. His expression morphed from sickeningly sweet to an icy, piercing glare directed straight at Valerie. Valerie stood impassive, letting the chilling silence stretch as the smell of antiseptic hung heavy in the air. She observed the two of them with a flat, unchanging stare, her posture rigid.

"Dominic, Valerie has been out of line. I brought her here to apologize to you." Miriam's voice dripped with appeasement. She nudged her daughter closer to the pristine white hospital bed, her fingers digging into Valerie's arm.

Dominic crossed his arms and watched the scene with a cold detachment. He expected the usual routine. He waited for Valerie to cave to her mother's pressure, lower her head, and try to make peace. In the past, she always backed down and tried to smooth things over. He figured today would follow the exact same script. Waiting for her submission eased the tension in his shoulders just a fraction.

Miriam elbowed Valerie in the ribs, leaning in close, her voice a harsh whisper. "Valerie, apologize right now. Do not ruin this."

Instead of bowing her head, Valerie offered a faint, mocking smirk. She locked eyes with Dominic, refusing to break contact.

"Apologize for what? You are the one who bails on me time and again, Dominic, not the other way around. If you cannot let go of Chloe, then go ahead. I will step aside and let you two be together." Valerie met his fury without a flinch, her voice steady and clear.

Dominic's eyes narrowed, his jaw tight.

Valerie did not stop. She stared down his mounting anger and pressed on, her tone turning sharp. "Does juggling two women wear you out? It tires me just watching you do it. Why bother? If you cannot move on from her, just tell me straight. I am not the type to cling to a man who does not want me. I have done nothing wrong, so you will get no apology from me. Breaking up is a decision I thought through carefully."

She took a step closer, her voice slicing through the thick tension in the room. "Whatever twisted love story you two want to play out is on you. I am not desperate enough to be a pawn in your drama. And frankly? This entire situation disgusts me."

Dominic shot up from the edge of the bed, his face flushed with raw rage. His hands curled into tight fists at his sides. "Valerie, what Chloe and I have is aboveboard! It is not the sleazy nonsense you are implying! Even a temper tantrum has limits. You are a woman too. You know how vital a girl's reputation is. Throwing dirt on her name like this is unacceptable. I demand you apologize to her right now."

Right on cue, Chloe burst into dramatic, heaving tears. She clutched the crisp hospital sheets to her chest, her face turning a blotchy red. "Valerie, how can you slander me like that? Even if you do not believe me, can you not at least believe Dominic? We dated once, but that is old news! He is only helping me as a friend. If it upsets you, that does not give you the right to drag my reputation through the mud like it is nothing!"

Chloe sobbed louder, her shoulders shaking as she played the part of the fragile, broken victim. "What are you playing at? Are you trying to set me up and tarnish my name? Fine! I will stop bothering Dominic from now on. I will stay far away from both of you. Does that work? You spread vicious lies about me, and you owe me an apology! I... I..."

Her voice trailed off into a weak gasp. Chloe's face drained of color, her breathing turning shallow. She slumped back against the pillows, her hands going limp as she fainted dead away onto the mattress.

Dominic's expression shifted into raw panic. He slammed his hand onto the emergency call button above the bed.

Doctors and nurses rushed through the door within seconds. They crowded around the bed, checking her vitals, feeling her pulse, and shining small lights into her unresponsive eyes. After a tense minute, the lead doctor stepped back. He confirmed it was merely a faint from emotional exhaustion, nothing serious, and instructed her to rest. He then ushered the medical staff out of the room, leaving the four of them alone once more.

The moment the heavy door clicked shut, Dominic turned a dark, murderous scowl on Valerie. The air in the room grew thick with unspoken violence. He stepped forward, his right arm pulling back. He swung his hand in a wide, punishing arc aimed right at her face.

Valerie saw the strike coming. She quickly took a step back, her reflexes sharp enough to dodge the blow without breaking a sweat.

But Miriam stood directly behind her. Desperate to salvage the powerful connection between the Thorne family and the Vance family, Miriam planted her feet. She shoved her own daughter hard in the back, pushing Valerie straight into the path of the swinging hand.

A sharp, sickening slap echoed through the quiet hospital ward.

Regret flashed through Dominic in an instant. His hand froze in midair, trembling slightly. The anger drained from his features, replaced by a stunned disbelief at his own action. An apology formed on his tongue but died in his throat. A glaring, red handprint bloomed aggressively across Valerie's pale cheek, a stark contrast to her skin. The impact forced her head to turn sharply, her loose hair falling over her eyes.

The physical sting radiated across Valerie's skin, hot and painful. Yet, it was nothing compared to the razor-sharp betrayal tearing through her chest. Her own mother had offered her up as a sacrifice. Her mother had forced her to take the strike to appease a wealthy man's temper. The sheer, treacherous weight of that push left Valerie hollowed out, her heart turning to ice. The reality of it settled deep in Valerie's bones, erasing any lingering sense of familial duty she once harbored.

Miriam stood frozen, her fists clenched tight by her sides. Guilt flickered in her eyes for a mere second before she forced herself to look away, lips pressed into a thin line, choosing the family business over her daughter's well-being once again.

Dominic instinctively reached out, his fingers hovering inches from Valerie's bruised face, wanting to bridge the gap he just created.

Valerie sharply swatted his hand away, her palm connecting with the back of his knuckles with a loud smack. "Do not touch me."

The stinging rejection caused Dominic's fleeting guilt to evaporate. Annoyed pride took over his features. He pulled his hand back, rubbed his knuckles, and set his jaw. He gave her a frosty stare, masking his momentary lapse in composure with arrogant disdain.

"You had that coming for what you did to Chloe." Dominic snapped, standing tall and trying to reclaim his dominance in the room.

Valerie let out a dry, bitter laugh. The sound scraped against the sterile walls of the room, devoid of any humor. She matched his frosty stare, her eyes devoid of any lingering warmth or attachment. She saw him for exactly who he was.

"Dominic, one last time: we are through."

His face darkened dangerously. The veins in his neck popped. He loomed over her, wielding her family's impending financial ruin like a loaded weapon.

"Do not bite the hand that feeds you, Valerie. Think hard about this. What makes you think you can dump me? If you end things, do not expect the Vance family to keep bailing out the Thorne family. You are not some high-and-mighty princess anymore. Lose the spoiled routine. I can pamper you, or I can take it all away in a heartbeat."

Valerie sneered at the utter illusion of his care. Her voice dripped with raw contempt, stripping away his false narrative.

"Pamper me? Hand on your heart, Dominic, does saying that make you feel even a little guilty? You have done nothing but belittle me. You treat me like a joke in front of your friends. You prioritize Chloe at every turn. When have you ever pampered me?"

Dominic swallowed hard. Her words hit their mark, forcing him to briefly recognize his own cruelty. The memory of his casual dismissals and public snubs flashed through his mind. For a split second, a lump formed in his throat. Then, his massive ego kicked in, quickly reassuring him. The Thorne family depended on him. She needed him. She was just throwing a tantrum and would come crawling back to his side, begging for his help.

"Valerie, regarding this breakup, I do not..." Dominic started, preparing to reject her terms and maintain control over the relationship.

Valerie cut him off sharply. "I am telling you, Dominic. I am not asking."

Her unwavering resolve bruised his massive ego. Dominic ground his teeth together, the sound audible in the quiet room. He glared at her, his pride stung by her absolute refusal to bend.

"Fine! We are done. I cannot wait to see how you and the Thorne family manage without me." He mocked her, his voice lashing out with cruel satisfaction, trying to land one final blow.

Valerie remained unfazed. She looked at him with an unbreakable, steely resolve.

"Do not trouble yourself, Mr. Vance." Valerie replied calmly.

Miriam panicked. She lunged forward, her hands waving frantically. "Valerie! Have you lost your mind? Apologize right now! You cannot do this! The Thorne Group needs him!"

Valerie tuned out Miriam's frantic curses. The screaming faded into white noise, holding no power over her anymore. She spun on her heel, the rubber soles of her shoes squeaking against the linoleum floor. Her posture remained straight and unbroken, her head held high as she walked straight out the heavy hospital door. The hallway stretched before her, offering an escape from the suffocating presence of the two people who had ruined her life. She did not look back once, leaving the toxic room behind her.

Dominic stood frozen in the center of the room. He seethed, his chest heaving as he glared at her retreating figure. He could not fathom that she had actually walked away from him and the money.

Miriam dropped her head, stepping toward him with a pitiful, desperate expression. "Dominic, please do not be angry. She is just acting out! I will go home and whip her back into shape. I promise you, I will make her see reason. Please, do not pull your support!"

As Miriam groveled, blindly promising to force Valerie into submission, Dominic merely smirked sarcastically, wrapping himself in cold silence.
